For "special" items you could also state that you won't accept bidders with less than, for example, 100 feedback.

I like the idea of requiring delivery confirmation and insurance for paypal

Thanks to everyone for the advice, BTW. You're all very helpful. Believe me,
after collecting for nearly two decades, it is NOT easy to start letting this
stuff go! (Of course, in the end, I will never sell my truly priceless stuff,

the ONLY safe method I know for overseas. Of course most of the time you

deliver a physical trackable item along with the virtual item.

Agreed, BidPay is very safe (Western Union owns it
and they've been around for decades so they know what they're doing).  It's
also convenient since it allows overseas buyers to pay with a credit
card.

Nope, it is just paypal does not have any seller protection for sellers who accept overseas payments (must have US verified address to qualify for paypals so called "protection"). So any overseas transaction could be reversed against the seller and there is nothing they can do about it. A few bad apples

I'm not sure eBay would let you get away with stating this, but it
might be worth making a note in the auction description that anyone
using PayPal must adhere to the terms of Paypal's (Seller) Protection
Policy. I don't know quite how to phrase such a statement or even if
it would be any help, but it might be worth considering.

Less trustworthy? Of course not. But there's zero recourse if
anything goes awry with an overseas transaction, even if its simply
damaged in shipping. He's referring to the policies, not the people.
Personally I've sent things to the UK, Israel, Portugal and Australia
with zero problems.

Hehe, you weren't paying attention to my ranting and ravings about paypal? Make sure you insure and have deilvery and/or signature confirm. I don't THINK you need sig confirm with insured items over $50 as they have to sign anyway but you do need delivery confirm. This procedure is the only way to go if you accept paypal. They must also have verified address (ie no overseas sale is safe).

Oh yeah, Tom will probably say this too, but you're safer if you DON'T take
PayPal for something this expensive. It's just too darn easy (and tempting)
for a scammer to pull a chargeback.

Re: [SWCollect] How to protect against theft of big-money items?

2003-11-29 Thread C.E. Forman
I would recommend signature confimation with insurance. The confirmation
will act as proof that it was delivered, the insurance will give you some
protection if it's damaged en route. And it's not too expensive. For items
like this you may want to call the buyer on the phone before you ship, just
to validate that the info isn't fake. You can request the contact info thru
eBay. Maybe reverse lookup the number on WhitePages, too, to verify it
matches the name and address.

(Yeah, I don't trust anyone anymore... 'cept you guys of course! B-)

Escrow is another viable option, but it's more expensive, means longer
turnaround, and you still have to ship with a tracking number for the escrow
service. (They recommend insurance too.) I've never used any personally,
as I got turned off by the limited options they'd accept as "valid" tracking
numbers. That was years ago, maybe they've changed practices since?

P.S. If you're shipping overseas you're probably vulnerable no matter what
you do.

P.P.S. If you do get ripped, you know who to tell about it. B-)
