Breaking News: windows 10 are you willing to give up your privacy?

2015-08-03 Thread LB via Talk
Hi!

Yes, the way of the future is all your privacy is lost. Everyone is
spying on everyone.

My Breaking News keeps the spying away until you go to the web site.
So, Breaking News 3.1 is now posted and has several changes in it.
You now have 7 items to enter on the alert for your web page.
Added are the Block check box and the End Block search phrase, to mark
the end of the block you want read.
Note:
If you do not check the check box, or the first phrase is not found, the
End block phrase will be your second search phrase.
So, now you have 3 searches done, the first phrase, then the end block
phrase, and a search for the Heading 1 font search.

I have added a menu for the downloaded web page text read for handy
hotkey functions. A File, Edit, View, and Help menu is added.
The file menu also has a download for downloading and saving files.
The view menu has the 3 options for viewing a web page, text, link, and
go to the page.
The edit features are Find phrase, Reverse search, and go to a line
number.
The help menu is the simple standard help.

In the future I will make all dialog menus have the same features but
the edit menu which are obviously different when using an edit box.

I will change the help menu in the future to list the hotkeys and an
explanation of each, along with them being functional.

So, it is now ready for download.

I don't like how much information windows 10 tries to get. I'll be sticking
to windows7 as long as possible.

one thing everyone should do when they install windows 10 is do not use the
quick setup. use custom. then you will see 13 pages of privacy options you
can opt out of.
if you use the quick setup all of these options will be turned on by
default. i got this from the leo leport web page.

Windows 10 and the new Browser supposedly gives Microsoft much more feed
back as to how you use the computer, where you go on the web, what you do
when you are there, and what you buy. I imagine anything written in MS
Office, whether it be a Spread Sheet, or a Document, is probably available
to those who wish to view the contents of these files.

If you own a Small business, you might wish to keep some things of your
business privet. do you really want a flood of Bankruptcy lawyers
sending you their Electronic Business Cards, letting you know, their
Services are available? All because someone was able to peek at your
Quick Book files?

or maybe you were stupid enough to buy some Sex Toy On Line, and now an ad
pops up when your best friend, who is a bad Gossiper, is borrowing your lap
top to do some work of his own.

Or maybe your friend writes a fiery letter off to a Politician, but because
it was written on your machine, those watchers think you are the one who
wrote the nasty letter, and not your friend.

We are edging more and more into a culture where everyone has to be careful
about what they say, and to who you say it. Even though some much is said
about being Tolerant, I find today there is less and less tolerance.

when using your computer, always, and I do mean, always have the
understanding, that nothing on it, and anything you do on it, could be seen
by someone else. big Brother is watching, and has been watching, and
probably lots of Little Brothers too.

If you want real privacy, but still want to use the computer, guess you will
need to have two systems. One that is hooked up to the internet, and
another that is not, and never will be.

Reading with the physical mouse in WE 9.2

2015-08-03 Thread James Roberts via Talk
The 9.2 readme says that reading with the physical mouse in IE 11
has been improved. Does this mean that reading with the physical
mouse with 9.2 in IE 11 is about as good as reading with the physical
mouse in IE 8 has been?

I do a lot of web page reading with the physical mouse and don't want
to upgrade to IE 11 until I have reason to believe mouse reading will
work pretty well. I don't know if I could revert to IE 8 once I go to IE 11.

Thanks
Jim Roberts

Windows Explorer in Windows 7

2015-08-03 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
At one time, I thought I could hear the size, or at least an approximate size,
of a folder spoken. Now, I get no size information even wqhen Size is checked
under the View menu. Have I remembered wrong or just forgotten something? I do
hear file sizes. I checked Folder Ooptions in Control Panel and didn’t see
anything that would directly relate to this.

Okay, the place where I said there were a list of things to choose from is
where it said choose details. That's below the checkbox for details. But
anyway, I figured that out, but I still can't figure out how to get it to
show me the file type and size. I had this somehow get turned off when my

And one other work around that I just found. If I clicked the Detail view and
arrow to the file I want, I can then route my pointer to that line with Insert
numpad + then hit the Control numpad 5 to read the current line and it will
read everything. But again, the size isn't' showing for me on folders, just
files, so I still think the folder properties is what you need.

no matter which view options I pick, it's not reading the size. I can see
enough to see the file size is listed for files, but not for folders. Neither
read when I arrow up and down. If you don't find an easy option, maybe doing a

2015-08-03 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
It has been my experience that size is not listed for folders in Windows
Explorer. Is it possible you used another program for a while, say
something like Xplorer? You can get folder info by opening the
properties with the shortcut key of alt plus enter. The total size is
listed along with the number of files and folders inside the folder in
question.

just checking details will not always show the file size and date. you have to
open a windows pull down, folder options then details i think and check the
columns you want to show.
the first is name and can not be hidden.
you can if you open the w e control panel/apps. then arrow to windows enhanced
and check show all colums.

Yes, I remember punch cards. I did RPG and COBOL, and I remember the flow
charts and everything. You had to write the stuff up in braille, and then
make the punch cards, then run the punch cards and print it out. I used to
be able to read the punch cards. I know there were those key punch things
that looked like electric typewriters, but does anybody ever remember those
manual keypunches? They had I think something like twelve keys on them, so
you had to press the right combinations in order to make the letter you
wanted to write. Like writing braille, sort-of. Pam.

Hi!

Yes, memory lane. Remember those nasty punch cards? You certainly hoped
that no one tripped you up, or you spilled soda on them, for that nasty
picking up the cards and sorting them out...boy those were the days.

I had used basic, self taught for work and re-wrote a Cornel University
experts software he had written for the NCR production line. It did little,
so I did it.
I wrote all 3 points, Data Entry, Data processing, and Data printing of
the charts. All were for quality control all through the production line for
all printers and terminals produced at the Ithaca plant...
Remember, cassette tapes were used back then for data processing, along
with 10 inch disks, that had only about 2K of memory/space on them.
All the data entered by the secretary was processed one at a time and by
noon the data was sorted and processed. I used the 2K disks and limited
memory to do al this stuff...
Talk about the stone age, you certainly learned to use limited space for
everything, for you had no choice.
But it worked, in fact, was all done 6 months before I went blind, a car
accident, and it was my perfect transition over to a new job at the same
company; I was there resident expert and saved the company, so I was told.

Then, after loosing the eye sight I was given a Braille machine, which
was like having a file cabinet next to you. It was made out of Oak wood, for
the printing punches had to be kept quiet and strong enough to be kept from
bouncing around, thus the solid wood cabinet was used and a tray under it
for the perforated Braille paper that came up through a slot as the tractor
pulled it up.

Yes, TriFormations produced that Brailler...

The good old days, or Stone Age as most people would say now. You
know, like the slide rule, our hand held computer back in prehistoric
times...

Wow! This is bringing back some fun memories!

Around 1983 or 84 i started taking some BASIC programming language
classes at my local Radio Shack.they had several Model 4's that ran
Trsdos and CPM. the instructor had rigged up the systems to speak. it
was quite crude and was not a Screen Reader at all. No way to repeat
anything. but it was a start, I knew right there and then, I wanted a
Computer. I begged, borrowed and stole enough to finally get one of
those Model 4 systems. Bought some actual Screen Reader for about $300
and I wa son my way. Loved playing Zork, and many other Infocomm games.

I was in a Relationship that went bad. The woman gave me back my
engagement ring, and I traded it to a guy that had several IBM XT
machines. And once I had my first MS Dos system, there was no looking
back. This may have been around 1986 or 87.I am so glad that
woman broke up with me! Because she did, I had a Career in Computers.
Too funny.

Bought a screen reader out of Ohio, think it was called Enhanced PC.
then bought the one done by Arctic. finally came on to Vocal Eyes around
1991 or 92.
When Windows 3.1 came along, I did purchase some windows Screen Reader
out of Canada. It sucked, but I needed it for work.

i bought the Window eyes program when it came along. And it was a bit
limited, but it worked well enough for me to keep my job. Been with
Window eyes to this day. have yet to buy JAWS, although I've helped others
who have it.

thanks for the walk down memory lane.

edline! Now that makes me laugh.i once had to use that very limited
editor to write COBOL and JCL. Was using a PC hooked up to a huge
mainframe at Boeing.

I kept wanting to use Word Star to write my code, but was told to use
Edline or else!

Crazy times back then.

Hi Pam,

Try this:
While in Windows Explorer,
Press alt-v for view menu
then press o for sort order
up arrow to more
type s for size.
If it is not checked, check size.
Tab to OK and press enter.
Now, when you want to see size, simply right arrow tothe box which shows
each of the selected items,

like name, size, bit rate, date modified.
Remember, if you check something that does not report a particular item,
it will just say

read only, - item.
Folders do not show size.

Re: windows 10

2015-08-03 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Actually, while it will not share your password with anyone it will
allow anyone in your Outlook or Skype contacts to connect to your wifi,
e.g. a friend comes to your home with their phone, tablet, etc. they
will automatically be connected to your wifi. But this is only for
internet use. They will have no access to your computer or network. And
of course you can disable all of these things if you wish.

So the real question is do I trust those who are in my contacts and
close enough to connect to my internet connection, be it with or without
my knowledge, not to be performing nefarious tasks that will point to my
IP address?

It has been my experience that size is not listed for folders in Windows
Explorer. Is it possible you used another program for a while, say
something like Xplorer? You can get folder info by opening the
properties with the shortcut key of alt plus enter. The total size is
listed along with the number of files and folders inside the folder in
question.

RE: Screen Reader History

2015-08-03 Thread Vic Pereira via Talk
Like many here, I began with a Tri-Formations Free Scan Speech Terminal,
FSST. As well as using it to connect me to main frame computers I also used
it to connect to a CP/M microcomputer to run Word Star and program in Dbase.
I didn't have the honour of using punch cards.

When we moved to PCDOS, which changed to MSDOS, my screen reader on that
platform was something simple like Talk. The IBM microcomputers only had ten
function keys and this screen reader used them to read line and perform the
other functions. The external synthesizer was awful, I think it was a Type
n' Speak.

People were pushing ASAP, Artic and JAWS. I ended up getting Vocal-Eyes with
the Sounding Board which was a huge step up for me. I continue to use it
until we brought in Windows for work groups. I didn't worry about a Windows
screen reader, because I could run Vocal-Eyes in all the windows for each
application I needed to use. These were still more or less DOS based;
examples are Word Perfect, Dbase, terminal emulation etc.

When Lotus Notes came into our environment I had to shop for something that
would then be Windows happy. Artic kept crashing, ASAW was not quite there
and JAWS couldn't see the Notes screens, but Window-Eyes could. Also back
then the Jaws cursor didn't show mouse movements on the screen. I had to
train people and do demonstrations. Sighted people like their mouse pointers
and Window-Eyes allowed me to use the mouse navigation keys to work in those
situations.

It seems like those of us who started using synthesizers, like the FFST
terminals that were built out of a Heath Kit box are mostly OK with
synthesizers that don't quite sound like human speech. Heck even those FFST
devices would change a couple of words by replacing them with sugar or
fudge. Even the tech sector had a paternalistic view toward providing us
with products.

Hi!

Yes, memory lane. Remember those nasty punch cards? You certainly hoped
that no one tripped you up, or you spilled soda on them, for that nasty
picking up the cards and sorting them out...boy those were the days.

I had used basic, self-taught for work and re-wrote a Cornel University
experts software he had written for the NCR production line.

You
know, like the slide rule, our hand held computer back in prehistoric
times...

file. I do have a9.0 cd. Is there any way of getting ahold of a 9.1
upgrade file? I can certainly uninstall and re-install Window-eyes, but
I'd like to go back to 9.1. You'll have to forgive me if this seems
obvious but I've never had to do this sort of thing before. This is the
first time i've ever had an issue like this.

Thanks, guys.

I think I downloaded that upgrade file from the GW Micro site, but it
may no longer be available now that 9.2 is here.

I doubt if you could even by a replacement disc for $25, and have it be
9.1. You might try, but if they have 9.2 discs, they won't sell you an
older version.

I attempted to go back to 6.1, a few years ago, when I think it was
version 7 was rather buggy, or was that 8?And GW Micro would not
sell me a replacement for the older 6.1.

I take it 9.2 is not working well for you? Worse than 9.1?I was
just considering ordering a 9.2 disc, or at least buying the upgrade.
Are you suggesting that I should wait a bit further, maybe for a 9.3?

I am not rushing into downloading Win 10, so no need to be forced to use
9.2.

Been with
Window eyes to this day. have yet to buy JAWS, although I've helped

Hi, Everytime since I can remember anyway when a new version of windows
comes out there's a lot of hype either way. I got my first pc in 95 and of
course it had win 95 on it. I had not used win 3.1. I heard all the guys
that had been using 3.1 complaining about 95 and I couldn't figure out why
because 95 just blew 3.1 away. People just don't ;like change I guess, but
Window eyes, windows, and so much other stuff on the net and job field is so
much more accessible than back in those days of dos and win 3.1 and the

RE: WE 9.2 and Factory Settings

2015-08-03 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Guys: This can be handled by having the root set file and not allowing a
user to modify it directly.
A user could override or extend it in another file but the root content
always remains the same.
When an update comes in it replaces the root file but if the design is good
anything in the user file will remain intact.
This is accomplished via what Microsoft calls partial classes for working in
some DataBase projects using strongly typed data sets.
To change a setting in the root file you would override that setting in your
partial file and when WindowEyes engine fires up it loads both into one file
that it uses during the runtime environment.
The only requirements are that any changes to the root file like brand new
settings or deprecated settings are handled in the users file but that is
still allot easier than ReCreating the file by modifying the AI2 version
from scratch and if you don't like your user file rename or delete it and
the factory settings in the AI2 version are loaded and used as usual.
You could even have several versions of your user files each handling a
single feature if you wanted to go that route or one for particular
operating systems or hardware configurations.
This may be able to be done now, don't know since I havent looked into it,
but it could be done for sure if AI2 implemented it.
Perhaps it could even be scripted.
If the root set file variables and names don't change often this would be a
way to maintain the custom user settings without limiting set file updates.
The other option would be to allow the user to pick which set files to use
and when a root file is updated that file might change but the user file
would be intact and the one used at runtime, perhaps that is how it now
works.
But this is a good question and one that has been addressed for many years
as distributed programs and data bases have been the norm to avoid stepping
on allowed user changes to configuration or settings files. There may be
others but I am aware of and used both of the above in other projects and
platforms.

Thanks Peter for passing on this tip to all of us.

I think that's a good suggestion (to automatically at least notify you that
a .set file is out of date, if not allow you to have it automatically
updated).

The reason it isn't just done is that someone might have spent a lot of
time modifying the settings (say for Word), so that very specific items are
read, and others aren't. Maybe they defined a lot of hotkeys as having a
program scope, then changed them to be something else so they don't
conflict with something in Word. If so, all of this is lost when the later
.set file is updated (replaced) on top of the out of date one; not to
mention the issue of defined graphics, colors, exceptions, etc. They all
could be lost, and people might not be happy. So, perhaps just notifying
you is the best that can be done.

Hello

I reported that, after the installation of WE 9.2, Word 2010 began to act
crazily. For instance, paragraph styles were spoken at odd times, before
reading a paragraph (as usual) or after reading a paragraph, or not at all.
It took me several days to track down the cause of this anomaly.

Finally, I went, for lack of other options, to the Factory Settings list
under the File menu of Window-Eyes. I was told that the factory settings
for Word 2010, Window-Eyes Global UI, and so on, were out of date. I
install the latest factory settings for those programs I frequently use. My
problems with Word 2010 went away, and Word 2010 behaved as before and even
better in many ways.

Question: Why didn't the WE Installer install the latest factory settings
automatically?

Over the weekend, I created a virtual machine with an evaluation of Vmware

was able to do the reset and it was successful! It even took under half an
hour to complete! Googling Windows 10 recovery suggests that the feature
no longer requires any sort of recovery image and instead loads the
required system files to complete the reset at runtime. You can, however,
still create a recovery drive in Windows 10 by going to Control Panel

But yes, Windows 10 just keeps getting better! I love it! Hope you do too

Re: Screen Reader History

2015-08-03 Thread LB via Talk

2015-08-03 Thread Baracco, Andrew W via Talk
I do not believe that Window Eyes existed in 1993. As I recall, the
first screen reader that could access Windows was Window Bridge, in 1993
followed shortly after by JFW. Window Eyes came late to the party, I
believe in 1995.

Hi paulette.

If you're familiar with Apple devices, Cortana is like Siri. You can ask it
different questions, and it will either answer them with its female voice,
which sounds quite good, or it will open a web page in your default browser
so you can read the information. One thing you can ask Cortana is Tell me
a joke. Her humor is right up my alley. You can ask the time,
temperature, weather, and many other things. Some of these are just for
fun, but some of what Cortana can do is pretty impressive.

To activate Cortana in Windows 10, hit the WINDOWS key to activate the start
menu, then TAB once to get to the microphone button. Hit SPACE on it, and
you should hear a tone from Cortana, indicating you can speak to her.
Another tone will sound to indicate the information is being processed, and
you will either get an audio answer from her, or a web site will open.

If you don't see a microphone button, then it means you have to set up
Cortana. I called up Microsoft accessibility to do this, so I don't know
what all is needed to be done. Contrary to what the consultant told me at
Microsoft, you don't need a logon password to get it to work. You do,
however, need a Microsoft account, and if you have an Outlook.com account
you're good to go.

One thing I almost forgot. You can have Cortana automaticly activate when
you say Hey Cortana. I personally don't use this, because anything in the
vicinity of the microphone can activate it.

That's about all I can think of to mention. Hope this is useful.

Have a great day, and don't work too hard.

Hi Again,

The Block search feature for Breaking News is ready. The upload will be
by the end of the day, but review takes a day, so probably you will not see
it until Tuesday.
The new feature of Breaking News is the ability to set each web page on
the Main Tree view settings list with a search phrase and the number of
lines after finding that phrase and it all gets read.
Also, you can block off a section of a page by copying an end phrase and

inserting it as the End Block Search Phrase inside the Tree View Item list
and checking the Block Search checkbox.
Now, if you do not find the first search phrase, or do not check the
Block Search check box, it will use the End Block phrase as a second search
item, just in case you do not find the first search phrase.

In other words you will have 3 different items to search for when
downloading a page to read. Where the third item is a heading 1 tag marker.

Also, I have checked for errors and eliminated some errors which pop-up
when any of your dialogs are not displayed any more, so there should be less

errors cropping up in this version if you escape from a dialog or it
disappears.

Remember, this Breaking News does save files by using the Control-S key
combination and you can do a path search where to save the file as well.

Today I will be working on a menu for the text read of the web page to
give more options than hotkeys.

So tonight it will be uploaded for review.

Bruce

Subject: Breaking News App

Hi Everyone,

By the end of this weekend I will have an update for my Breaking News
App. It will be version 3.1 when ready for upload.

I have fixed the HTML off-line page and inserted the full link path that
web pages use only as a reference. It works as far as I can tell now, but
have not tested it on all web sites. So the link on the HTML page will in
fact work and not say Page Not Found.
The HTML page almost duplicates the reading of a web page but does strip
out some stuff, such as all Java Script and such to speed up the loading and
reading. It does preserve the text on the page.

The second addition will be the search phrase, at the moment it reads
only the line on and will add the next line for all. The font size heading
search, like H1 to H5 the next line is read since I have placed the text
version of the tag on a line of it's own.

In addition I will also allow you to add how many lines you want to read
after the search phrase line, for that will be needed for a block read, I
will also add it as a manual input to allow you based on the page you have
saved can be independent of any other web page; since all searches are
unique.

I will also add the menu for the editbox since I have no menu, thus not
allowing you to make selections, such as reading an off-line HTML version of
the file. At the moment all options are hotkeys only when reading a text
version of a web page.

I hope to achieve the ability to do almost everything that is on a web
page that is possible, including running programs. But at the moment I am
doing this when I am not outside rebuilding my house; yes, I am totally
sightless in case someone asks.

I do have an update on the Sea Battle game with some more added sounds,
including a missile launch, but that to has not been uploaded yet and it
will
be version 1.1 for the Sea Battle game when uploaded.

I am taking a break and will spend more time on the computer.

Sincerely
Bruce Babcock

I would say circumstances more than Microsoft will impell people to upgrade
as time goes by. Older operating systems are only supported for so long
after all, after which they become security risks.

Re: Screen Reader History

2015-08-03 Thread Pamela Dominguez via Talk

You
know, like the slide rule, our hand held computer back in prehistoric
times...

turned

on

by default called Do not track.

It's not perfect, but they are actually trying to improve the security

of Windows not make it worse.

Now, can we please get back to talking about Window-eyes?

RE: does eloquence come with wineyes for office

2015-08-03 Thread Chip Orange via Talk
Great idea Keith, thanks.

I want to point out to any current owner of a paid version of 9.1, that you can
get a paid version of 9.2 for $50, which is virtually the same price as just
buying Eloquence, and that way you'd have both Eloquence and support from AI
Squared (and one of the high quality synthesizers as well). It's a much better
idea I think than paying for Eloquence if you already own 9.1.

I know the original poster was asking about just Eloqeunce, but I
think it would be advised that you read over this FAQ (Frequently
Asked Questions) document Bush.
This will help you know the main differences between the paid and
Window-Eyes for Office offer.

I hope this document helps everybody on this list.

No all you get is Microsoft sapi 5 which is much better than eloquence.
 Also
you get e spak .thee are the two free ones. If you want eloquence it will
cost you $39. If you have a copy of Kurzweil, then you can rrun the speech
work version of eloquence and from my pint of view that's a much better
 then
any eloquence out there. Also ther isa sapi 5 version by code factory as
 well.

Re: you will upgrade!!lol

2015-08-03 Thread tchild via Talk
Hi, Everytime since I can remember anyway when a new version of windows
comes out there's a lot of hype either way. I got my first pc in 95 and of
course it had win 95 on it. I had not used win 3.1. I heard all the guys
that had been using 3.1 complaining about 95 and I couldn't figure out why
because 95 just blew 3.1 away. People just don't ;like change I guess, but
Window eyes, windows, and so much other stuff on the net and job field is so
much more accessible than back in those days of dos and win 3.1 and the
such..

Windows 10 ready notification SCAM article from Kim Komando

2015-08-03 Thread Loy via Talk

There's a very serious ransomware scam targeting Windows users trying to
upgrade to Windows 10. If you click the link in this email, it will
download a virus that locks your computer and holds it hostage until you
pay up.

This one is particularly dangerous because it's so timely. Right now you
might be waiting for your upgrade to Windows 10 as Microsoft gradually
rolls out the new version. It's easy to imagine how somebody could fall
for this scam if they're not paying attention.

Remember, Microsoft is NOT emailing Windows 10 upgrades. But on top of
that, there are some other red flags in the email. First, the IP address
of the sender is actually in Thailand, not the US. Second, there will
probably be some parsing problems with the email text. Third, it tries to
trick you by telling you it was scanned for virus MailScanner. This is a
classic trick to make you think the email is safe. It's all part of the
disguise.

Your best insurance against this sort of scam, especially if you're at
risk of someone less informed installing the ransomware on your machine,
is to ensure that you back up all of your data and store it offline. We at
Komando.com never recommend paying the ransom to the hackers.

This tricky email appears as if it's from Microsoft. It even uses the
address upd...@microsoft.com, and the body of the email encourages you
to download an attached .zip file to install Windows 10. Do NOT download
and install this file.

Microsoft is not emailing customers with the Windows 10 upgrade. That
should be your very first clue. Your current Windows operating system will
notify you when your upgrade is available. There will be a notification in
your toolbar. You won't get any email.

If you do make the mistake of downloading and installing the ransomware,
all your files and documents will be locked by unbreakable encryption.
You'll have to pay the hackers if you want them back.
