RE: Taking the Plunge: Installing JFW18

2017-07-29 Thread Barbara via Talk
That is essentially what I did. However the control-alt-w hot key to start
Window-Eyes will still work once you have JAWS as your primary screen
reader at start up. I just close JAWS and then start up WE whenI wish to
use it.

I am ready to do my first install of JFW18 on a test pc which now has the
latest and last version of WE.
I realize that both screen readers cannot be run simultaneously, but it's
ok to have both WE and JFW installed as long as only one is talking.
Am I correct on that?

Secondly, I believe that I need to readjust WE's start-up settings so that
the program never comes up talking.
Once I do this and make certain that the setting change has taken place, I
presume I can go, with WE talking to the run dialogue,
type in the path to the program (saved as c:\jfw64.exe", shut down WE
before hitting the return key, and the installation will begin with me
receiving some form of speech when it's ready for me to do something.

Is my interpretation correct, or is there something that I have missed in
what I need to do?

Thanks!

And, yes, I have read the opening installment of
Raul's tutorial but he doesn't mention any of what I have written but
presume is the proper way to proceed.

RE: Jaws 18 And Table Mode

2017-07-08 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hello,

I had a somewhat similar issue just this week.

I called up VFO and got some answers for this. I am guessing if it is the
same information as my situation it is caused by smart navigation. You can
toggle this off if you want. While in Internet Explorer or whatever browser
you are using, press insert-v. This gives you many settings related to the
corresponding program. In the search box type smart for the first word that
you are searching for. I had two matches. I cannot recall, but I think you
tab to the two results. You can up/down arrow to the choices. You can make
changes and tab to save or close or something. Sorry I am not familiar to
recall the exact details, but I am sure you can follow those OK. Smile.

That fixed my issue. I asked the general purpose of smart navaigation. I
was told that when JAWS recognized a table, it allows you to use the arrow
keys to move around. It is to simplify tables. It is on by default.

I hope this helps.

Changing the launching of Window-Eyes

2017-07-05 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hello Everyone,

I have mostly, but not entirely, migrated to JAWS. I want to keep WE on my
system, but just not start at boot up. I want to be able to use the WE hot
key to launch the program. I looked at the choices in the WE control panel,
and I am unclear. Which setting do I now select to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

RE: can gw-micro do us a faviour?

2017-01-10 Thread Barbara via Talk
Just a few thoughts. Smile. All of us would like some answers, but we will
have to wait. It is not uncommon for either legal or business reasons that
public announcements get delayed when there is a business reorganization.

Your comments about selling shares of stock is not likely to be a good
business choice for a company of this size. Any size company can become a
corporation, but there is a great deal more administration, expenses, and
taxes for a business when it becomes a corporation. Also some business
decisions may be made to keep shareholders happy which may also have effects
which may not be otherwise made. Since none of us have the information on
this business, and should not have it, just waiting is all a customer can
realistically do. Remember this is a private business and not a government
agency, public organization, or a nonprofit organization which have more
requirements for public disclosure.

All the best,

Selecting Options for a Credit Card

2016-12-16 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

I have a credit card that I must select choices quarterly for a reward
bonus. Until now, I have made a telephone call to make my choices.

There is a web site to perform these steps. All seems fine and blind
friendly except selecting the merchants for the bonus. The instructions for
selecting say:

Double-click or drag and drop your desired categories into the percentage
squares below. You'll be able to review your selections before confirming.

This web site of course requires a log in so I cannot provide a direct link
to the web page. I have used the space bar, the enter key and the
Window-Eyes left mouse key attempting to make my selections without success.
Is there a way to do so?

I have Internet Explorer 11 and Window-Eyes 9.5.3.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Interesting idea. I attempted printing labels many, many years ago and the
results were not good. Addresses did not appear where they were supposed

struggled to keep track of which label location was the designated location
on the sheet of labels. So. If you can point me to where I can do this

Barbara, like you, I have a Canon printer. It is a rather high-end one
though used primarily at work. I don't have a printer at home, although I
am in dire need of one that's portable enough to stick in a laptop bag since
I am always running after myself ! And I want to stay away from
inkjets, I am tired and sick of having to buy inks every other day.

I use Word 2007 still and I don't have problems printing envelopes. I did
have difficulties getting it inserted correctly, but, I called Canon Tech
Support, explained the situation and, right on, they were extremely helpful!
Patiently, they explained to me how to lay the envelope inside the printer.
It was as if the support tech was standing next to me. I'd therefore
suggest you call Canon Tech Support at:

800-652-2666 and follow the prompts.

On another list I frequent, I don't recall which one now amongst many,
someone posted info about an envelope printing program which I downloaded.
It's a ZIP file, hopefully not too big a file to send your way. Sorry, I'm
not into DropBox, else I'd have placed it there.

If you send me a private note, I'd be glad to search for this program file
and send it your way to play with.

Printing Envelopes

2016-10-16 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling printing envelopes for a while. I do not need to
perform this task often, maybe 15-20 times a year.

I have Windows 7, Office 2013, and Window-Eyes 9.5.3.

When I use the mail tab inWord, it is hard to get the envelopes dialogue to
appear. Once it does appear, the mailing address field does not work right.
I can paste an address, but cannot review it. I had called AI Squared in
the past on this and they said it was an issue with Office, they could not
fix. Sometimes I get it to work and other times I do not.

Here is my question, is there a free or very inexpensive program which will
allow me to print envelopes? I want to be able to print different size
envelopes. My Canon printer has an envelope slot and can accommodate
different size envelopes.

RE: Finding Errors When Filling in an Online Form

2016-09-30 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Chris,

I can understand how this tip may help with the issue. I know there is a
long list of things which the development staff has to work on, but I hope
this is on that list for a future release of WE.

Sometimes a required field or an error is denoted by a star character (not
always).
If you turn on math punctuation this may help in some situations.

All I can say, is that I wish there was a way to do this. I too, have found
myself in the situation you describe. Good thing for you, you could trace
down which field it was. Sometimes, you get a form with numerous fields, and
just an error saying "something is wrong", and will you please correct the
red fields. Sure, just tell me which field it is! :)

Far as I know, there is no good way to do this in WE. And you are not the
first one asking for the feature. Let's hope the staff will take this on,
when developing the next upgrade.

Finding Errors When Filling in an Online Form

2016-09-29 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

I am hoping someone may have an idea on how to find errors when filling out
an online form. I have Windows 7, WE 9.5.3 and use internet explorer.

Example I had today. I was filling an online form and entered on submit.
The form came back on screen and said I had an error highlighted in red. I
know WE can identify the color of any character that the cursor is on, but
is there a way for me to find the red? I am told by a sighted person that
the red may be words or a symbol like a star. Note I did eventually find
the error since the only other clue I was given was that it was a required
field, so I reviewed those fields and on my second review I made the change.
Whew!

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Java Update

2016-09-15 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

I have windows 7 and I am using WE 9.51.

I am getting at random times a pop up advising me that a new version of Java
is available. I am told to click here. I have used the hot key
control-insert-t which I understand is the tool tip hot key. It just
repeats the message. How do I click and install the update?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Browse Mode not Available

2016-08-16 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

I have Windows 7, IE 11, and WE 9.51.

>From time to time, I will go to a web site and get the message browse mode
not available. It is different sites and it occurs in a haphazard pattern.
I have tried the F5 refresh key and this does not help. Nor does toggling
browse mode off/on using shift/control/a. So I close IE and reopen it and
go to the same web site and all works fine.

Any ideas what is going on and how to prevent this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In Depth Help with Linked IN

2016-07-27 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hi Everyone,

This inquiry is for a friend of mine. I am not personally subscribed to
Linked IN.

If you are willing to have your identifying information shared with her, let
me know. You can contact me off list.

She needs to use Linked In. From what I can tell, she uses it in depth.
She says there is an older tutorial that she has found, but there have been
changes at Linked In since that tutorial was produced and this is where her
questions are.

She would either like to have a blind friendly tutorial, blind friendly
podcast or someone who is very familiar with the Linked In site to give her
some assistance.

Thank you in advance for any help or ideas you may provide.

RE: betrayal

2016-06-17 Thread Barbara via Talk
I was out-of-town when all this came out, so I am catching up now. OK I want
to comment on this below. I do not think the comparison is really
appropriate mostly because we are talking about screen readers which has a
very small market. I agree at some future time this company will have only
1 screen reader since it is unlikely that profits will be enough to maintain
both. Remember unlike the company mentioned below these companies are
operating with a lot less margin for error Unlike those fast food companies,
there is a very limited market which does not allow for much expansion. So
time will tell and we can look back at today and see how accurate each of us
was. Smile.

Pam,

You might think so and it's what I thought too.

However, think of this one for a moment. Yum Brands is a big holding company
in the fast-food industry. They own brands such as KFC, Taco Bell and, I
believe, Pizza Hut. I believe there are others in that brand holding
company but don't know them off-hand. A google search would get you all of
them, I'm sure.

My point in bringing them up is that there are several brands under that
name and all are indepednet. Even though the same holding company owns all
of them, they each put out their own type of food and are distinct chains.

I'm wondering if VFO now becomes a major holding company in the AT world
with each brand allowed to be independent but there is some sharing of
resources. We will have to see what happens.

BTW I don't know why I didn't think of the comparison last night but time
allows one to think.

As others have said, and they're probably right, the Dept. of Justice
probably wont touch this one due to size. Concerns can be expressed though
even if they're not likely to go any further than that.

RE: Adobe 11 in new window

Hi Marc,

OK I did what this reference says, but I do not really understand. When I
go into Tools, then manage add ons, I have the toolbar and extensions
checked. The next tab has 4 choices. I have tried all 4 choices with the
same results. There are 6 items listed in the following field. Only the
first one says produced by Adobe. However it is saying shockwave flash by
Adobe. It does not say Adobe reader. This is enabled. This does not sound
like the same as in the article on your link below. Also I find it
interesting that the article does not mention Internet explorer 11. OK
maybe the steps have not changed, maybe they have. What do you think?

RE: Question about opening PDF File

Usually control pagedown will take you to the next page. Control pageup
will take you to the previous page.

I realize circumstances and personal preferences are different. Dealing
with a 67 page PDF document would drive me nuts. I just go ahead and save
it to text and read it in word. I can start and stop easier and create a
bookmark to use so I do not need to either read the entire document or go
through a big task of finding my previous spot. I know you can note the PDF
page number and go directly to it. Like I said this is just an idea if it
fits for you.

RE: ie 11 windows 10 context menu key

2016-01-14 Thread Barbara via Talk
I am having a similar issue using the context key for anything in IE11. I
am using Windows 7 however. I had been given a tip if I turned off my
braille display, then it works. It does, but it is crazy to have to turn my
braille display off/on all the time. Let us hope this gets resolved soon.

it will work for a bit but after a few times we will crash. If you right

RE: Seeking Information on Braille Displays

2015-12-01 Thread Barbara via Talk
I know someone else gave a comprehensive response. I do have a 40 cell
Braille Edge acquired early this year. It meets all your criteria with one
small exception. Keep in mind I do not have a comprehensive knowledge of
what other models can do, so this may not be unusual. I can input using
braille into my i-phone. I cannot input directly using braille to the
computer. I do not know if this is because of the technology of the Braille
Edge or Window-Eyes. The Braille Edge has a built-in Note Pad. For the
Note Pad, you can write in braille. The Note Pad uses a SD card for storing
all your files etc. So what I do is take the SD card out and insert it into
my computer where I can transfer files both to and from the SD card. So in
that sense you can write in braille and get it to your computer. I am happy
with it.

Subject: Seeking Information on Braille Displays

Hello All:

I am looking to replace my current Braille display and would like some
information on potential replacements that are available. While I won't be
putting any money down right away, I'm in a position where I'm able to put
funds aside with the idea of purchasing sometime in early Spring, 2016.

The main criteria required in a Braille display for me are:
1. that it have Bluetooth Connectivity along with USB connectivity. That
way, I can connect the display using Bluetooth to work with my MacBook Pro,
iPhone and via USB to my Windows 8.1 machine which I'll be upgrading to
Windows 10 early in 2016.
2. That it work with Window-Eyes. While I have JAWS on my PC and of
course, use VoiceOver on the Mac and the iPhone, Window-Eyes is the primary
screen reader I use on the PC.
3. That the display offer Braille input capability to the computer and the
phone. While it's something I wouldn't use as often as other features,
having the ability to do input using Grade II Braille would be an important
nice to have feature. Also, while I'm not looking for a full-fledged
notetaker, if the display have the capability where I can use it to take
some toes then transfer these to the computer, that would be nice.
4. the display needs to have at least 20 cells. I will be using this unit
for, among other things, reading information during ACB Board meetings and
in other settings. I'd be looking for a unit with at least 20 cells, 32
would be preferred.

Two displays which have been suggested to me are the Brailliant by HumanWare
and the Braille Edge. I'll be prepared to spend up to about $2,500. I'd
like to know if people have other display ideas that you think would meet my
needs. Please try and let me know who makes a given display; I have access
to some distributors nearby so want to be able to see demonstrations of
displays before I put my money down if possible. If you would prefer to
communicate about this via phone, please email me privately with a phone
number and best times to call and I'll reach out to you; I'm in the U.S.
Central time zone. Thanks in advance everyone for any help.

Greetings,

A new Window-Eyes tutorial has been created to help you learn how to use the
new optical character recognition (OCR) feature available in VirtualView.
One of the best use cases for this new features is gaining access to the
text found in those pesky image based PDF files. The tutorial is available
for download in a variety of formats including video, audio and text. For
your convenience, here are the tutorial download links:

RE: Accessibility Credits And Small Business

2015-10-18 Thread Barbara via Talk
What is available at the Federal level can be found at:

https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Tax-Benefits
-for-Businesses-Who-Have-Employees-with-Disabilities

A lot of these benefits are limited for various reasons, so each business
needs to consult their tax advisor since all small businesses may not get a
benefit. Also these benefits may have calendar deadlines for them.
Otherwise the expense is just a business deduction for them like the general
business expenses.

You would need to consult with each state for any benefits at that level.

Hope this helps.

Prompts in Web Pages

2015-09-16 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hello Everyone,

I am using IE 11 and Window-Eyes 9.2.

When I go to some web pages, I get prompts. An example might be a prompt to
ask if I want IE to save a password. I would hear press alt-y for yes and
alt-n for no. I do not seem to be able to access this correctly. I know if
there is a notification bar, I can press alt-n to access it. However
pressing alt-n in this situation gets me nothing. The web site ignores
whatever I press and goes on to the web page. I will get the same prompt
the next time I visit the same page.

Another similar situation is a prompt for unsecure sections of a web page.
I will hear press alt-a to allow and I think it says alt-n for not. Same
issue here.

I think both of these situations have more options, but I think you get what
I am trying to ask here.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Another list member has given you an answer, but I wanted to echo his reply.
I could not resolve this on my own with my level of knowledge, but my tech
person did go and change a setting to make the default setting for all function
keys the standard windows function keys. If I use the FN, I could get the
results for the other function options. I do suggest you get a list of what
these options are. I have accidently pressed the function key on my laptop and
triggered unwanted results. It helps to reverse such results. Smile.

I wasn’t sure how to word the subjectline. I have asked this question before
and not gotten an answer, so I hope somebody can help me. People talk about
getting computers and having the function keys do different things. One person
said the function keys act right away, so that when you go to use our commands
with them, they do other things. I think it was said that you have to either
use a function key with the function keys on a laptop, or you have to go into
the registry or the bios and change it so that the keys do what we want.
Rather than have to do that, what question should I ask when buying the laptop
so that I get one with function keys that act properly? I need to know, since
I am going shopping for a replacement. Thanks. Pam.

after trying several times I can log on, but other times I can't. I have
mostly been trying with the stand alone player. Thanks for any help and
suggestions.

 Hi,

I know I've written only a couple of days ago, but I would still
 appreciate
it if someone on the list could send me an invitation code so that I can
 register for a Webvisum account.

I've submitted a invitation request to the Webvisum server and still have
 gotten no reply.

I was wondering if the Webvisum service itself is still active, or are
 they
simply not ansering invitation requests from new users.

 Thanks most sincerely,

 Rod Hutton

Using alt-O, D then F and answering yes to the question will also do the
trick. Make sure you are in the folder first.

I recall in previous versions of office word, accessibility was improved by

Are there settings in word options to be changed to deliver better access

Thanks.

RE: WE cursors help

2015-06-02 Thread Barbara via Talk
Petro,

The WE cursor is very similar to the JAWS cursor. You use the same num pad
keys for moving around with the WE cursor like you can with the mouse cursor.
Keep in mind the WE cursor is only a review cursor and does not actually affect
the program. The mouse cursor is like a mouse and can affect the program.
You use the latter to left and right click using the num pad if needed.

Brief testing. New user here. Less that6 hours of usage.
WE cursor Pressing numpad minus is this the same as the JAWS cursor?
If yes, when the WE cursor is active which keys do you use to navigate the
screen. I will definitely listen to the audio tutorials later again to review.
I know there were options for screen, active window and the like but do not
remember how to bring up this list. May be referrring to the wrong cursor at
the moment but all of this will sink in.
I know insert+minus maybe something like route cursor to focus?
When testing insert+numpad 7 or insert+numpad 8 and insert+numpad 9 for the
clips ‘graphics / objects’ how do you route the WE cursor to the graphic
element? I used insert+numpad / then numpad / and it worked within the
application I was testing WE with. Is there a better way?
I find the ctrl+numpad 5 helpful.

Handling Check boxes in program Replay media Catcher 6

2015-05-31 Thread Barbara via Talk
Hello Everyone,

I have been using Replay media catcher 5 for a while and version 6 came out
and has been revised quite a bit. Right now I am working with a trial
version. In some of the settings, there are items which read as check
boxes. I press the space bar to check it. I usually have to press the
space bar twice to hear the word checked. However when I look at the item
in question it still is saying unchecked. I do not know if the item is not
getting checked or WE is not reading the item correctly. It occurs on
several of the similar fields in this program.

I was hoping someone might have had a similar experience with a program or
on the internet and has an idea how to correctly deal with these fields with
check boxes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am using Windows 7 and WE 9.1.

RE: Seeking Your Input

My 3 choices in no specific order are:

Be able to read CAPTCHA Verification

More stability with Office and internet explorer. I have had more issues
since version 9 of WE than I have in more than 20 years

Most far fetched is a way for window-eyes to work with off the shelf
products without a tech type creating special apps or set files etc.
