I saw Peter's suggestion about getting drivers arguing, but thought I'd add that while out checking stops at the weekend I noticed that during the recent programme of raising kerbs at bus stops in this area they seem to have raised them for a number of the CUS stops too, making those easier to verify than I had been expecting. Still quite a few that aren't though. Ed I have just started to check the stops in East Yorkshire, where there are 130+ CUS stops. I deliberately went to check the nearest CUS stop to see what clues there were, only to find it had a sign like any other stop. I guess it has been converted. EY stops have a number of paired stops with only one sign labelled 'and opposite' for the other stop and nearly 50% so far don't display the AtcoCode at the stop. Their positions seem very accurate. Welcome! I will answer from my perspective (note that I haven't opened your OSM file as I lack the skills to deal with it) Ways can be added to the relation in any order. Ways that are only used in one direction should be added with a role of 'forwards' or 'backwards' as appropriate in relation to the way on which vehicles run along the way. Note that the correct terms (or at least the ones specified in the wiki, and those I use) are forward and backward. No s. If vehicles run in both directions for the route then leave the role blank. If they only run in the same direction that the way is oriented then the role should be 'forwards'. If it goes the other way it should be backwards. Personally I normally turn ways around if possible so that the buses go 'forwards' where possible for convenience - As you say, you have to be careful about doing this and should avoid turning ways round it if there are any orientation-specific tags on the way such as one-way and that it when you use backwards. There is a proposal for contraflow bus lanes somewhere that helps here. I think it's that the tagging for the way should include bus=opposite_lane (like for some ways, we have bicycle=opposite_lane). Even without using this, you can still indicate that buses go both ways along a one-way street by adding the bus route relation without a role specified. Unfortunately, some editors have added route relations and assumed that if a street is one-way, and buses/trams/whatever only travel the same way as normal traffic, then forward is not required. It is! I have not been adding bus stops to the routes, however it is not really possibly to add the stops 'in order' since there are likely to be a number of different variants for the route (in both directions, short running and deviations off the main route for special reasons - market days, end of school day etc). I suggest that they can be added in any order. I personally prefer to add stops in the order that they are served for the majority of services on that route. For example: I am trying (with anyone who wants to help) to get all the public transport on the Isle of Wight correctly mapped out, and keeping track of progress on this wiki pagehttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Public_transport_on_the_Isle_of_Wight. Now bus route 7 is a bit complex, effectively it's 3 different routes cobbled together, so I created 3 relations (1 for each version). To these I added the ways in no particular order, then the stops from origin to destination, and then the stops on the opposite side of the road going back the other way. Adding stops like this keeps them in order when displayed in a list (eg: 7 via Brighstone on öpnvkartehttp://%C3%B6pnvkarte.de/route.php?name=7%20via%20Brighstoneid=311757, on relation browser http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/311757, whole route on öpnvkartehttp://%C3%B6pnvkarte.de/?zoom=12lat=50.66932lon=-1.43099layers=BT). There are sporadic proposals to make this more logical, such as by adding an increasing count to each stop for any particular route, but nothing concrete at the moment. Note that nodes which are not part of a way (eg:most bus stops) need the forward_stop/backward_stop to refer to the bus direction, not the direction of the associated way. öpnvkarte seems to think nodes that *are*part of ways (eg: rail stations) also have to be tagged like this. The wiki says this is incorrect, but I'm unclear how authoritative that is. Thankfully the problem doesn't

One important thing here is that food is strictly divided into vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The law mandates that all food items should have either a green circle or a red one to show food type. There are areas in the country where it is very difficult to find a non-veg restaurant (and often considered impolite to enquire where one is). Since this is not specific to restaurants - it covers all shops that deal in food, I made a new tag called food=veg and food=nveg with either a green or red circle. Check whether your planet_osm_points table in the PostGIS database actually contains a food column. (You say the data is there in the database but I'm not sure what step you are referring to there.) Simply try a select count(*) from planet_osm_point where food='nveg'; to see if that returns anything. If not you will have to add the food column in osm2pgsql's style file. I would expect a higher zoom would be the best way to go. I have set numZoomLevels: 25, but the tool only shows the max as 18. How do I change this? I am using openlayers with mod_tile. You will have to patch mod_tile/renderd to allow higher zoom levels than 18, the limit is hard coded somewhere in there! The tiger import has done more than anything else to ensure that OSM in the US will be years and years behind what it could otherwise be. The way to get back up to speed, build communities and build the best map of the world is to move on from the failed approach of imports, and to open your eyes to what is done day in day out in Europe - without making excuses that the US is somehow different. But that won't happen. Despite all evidence to the contrary, many people will continue with the idea that if only there were *enough* imports, OSM in the US will stop being lame and start being awesome. It won't. So please, turn away from imports and work on getting mappers in charge, especially out pounding the streets. The outcome will be much, much better in the end, and that end will come much, much quicker. The 'Quicker' part will always be debatable; I put in many hours on fixups and the end result of the number of miles of properly routable interstate, state, and county highway is much much greater than what I could have produced from scratch with only aerial images. There is an issue of community in the US and how to get it going in general across the US. There are areas in the US with more active communities, but I can count the number of active mappers in my state on one hand. I doubt TIGER has anything to do with this. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Well in the Netherlands the AND import surely killed off most mapping activity. When the import happened there was no usable aerial imaging available. So fixing all those crooked urban streets that were really straight was a problem. Even now only about a quarter of the country has usable aerial imaging available. Fixing the non-road data from the import (forests and water) which was really low quality data is completely impossible without aerial imaging. The most read comment after the import was: But now the map is finished. This resulted in two years of mostly stagnation. (Except for some isolated spots.) It's now 2 years after the import and cycleways and pedestrian ways are still completely missing in most of the country. I work for NearMap (as does Alex K), and I'm happy to respond to enquiries on the list. There are actually a few of us on various OSM forums and lists, but being a public company we're sometimes a little bit constrained in what we can say. The best way to interact with us is via the forum on the NearMap site (http://www.production.nearmap.com/community/contribute.aspx and click on Forum), but I get the emails on this list and will read those that refer to us :) Anyway, in answer to a few of the questions that have come up: * We use different aircraft in different locations; the comments by James Andrewartha about the HyperPod are pretty much on the button. * The need for authentication to access the website has been fully removed now, so JOSM should be able to query our servers directly. * We added the licensing about tracing for OSM specifically to allow use of our images to boost the OSM data. If you read more on our website (for example, http://www.production.nearmap.com/help/faq.aspx#Gq4) you'll see that we generate our StreetMap tiles from the OSM data, so it's very much to our mutual benefit to get that data as up-to-date as we can. In fact, since we all live in Perth, there are quite a few updates to the data that we've contributed, using the Potlatch custom URL format. * Load balancing: all the externally available hostnames resolve to balanced IPs, so you could use any of the web0-web7 or www hostnames. However, to make sure that you get the best service, including using the nearest web servers to you (in net-connectivity terms), use www.nearmap.com. * Accuracy: this is important to us! The initial surveys of some cities suffered some teething troubles with hardware and the accuracy suffered. You can generally expect the accuracy to be as good as the recent Perth surveys, and when we reprocess the older surveys they will get more accurate. If you are assessing accuracy and find somewhere that we appear to be way out (preferably against a known reference point), then please let us know, via the forum. * Caching tiles: if you can, please do. They're served with strong etags and suitable Cache-Control and Max-Age headers. If your system honours those, you'll get updated images in a reasonable time frame and avoid hitting our servers too hard. Incidentally, if you do try and suck down tiles at a very high rate, you may well get throttled and start getting 509 responses.

___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

-- -S ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it
