Re: [OSM-talk-be] import AGIV CRAB-data
Re: [OSM-talk-be] import AGIV CRAB-data
Little by little, the OSM map is getting as and more attractive than Google. What is a pity is that out of a tennis court, a mini-golf and a kayak boarding place, this map shows only the tennis. I made a RENDER suggestion to solve this globally and the general opinion was against it. Some call getting mini-golf and kayak visible "tagging for the renderer" and I call it "tagging for the tourist". Google translated: These are our "districts". Those terms are unfortunately translated from English, and are not dependent on the country. Thus in our admin_level = 9th district, but it is displayed as "village" (and "village Kortrijk" sees kinda weird out). For admin_level = 7, there is apparently no translation (or even no English original), and it would be difficult to translate, because the term in the Netherlands is probably different. Well, on the Belgian mailing list you will reach anyone who could change something about the functionality you have to probably implement. higher, and the self When I made some corrections to Brussels, I had pinpointed "village Brussels" which is the former municipality. In fact, I have a theory that boundaries should be much more simply defined by nesting subareas (UK = England + Wales + Scotland), which would make the set of borderlines easily automatically computable, but still continued to be tagged in the boundary relations as a cache. In that framework, admin_level=X would be totally superfluous because the nesting determines which boundary relation is higher or lower in the tree and it could be replaced with sort of admin_level=municipality, admin_level:fr=commune, admin_level:nl=gemeente, admin_level:ge=gemeinde, admin_level:ru=город. This would put two relations of the tree at the same level when in-between levels are missing, such as between Belgium and Brussels capital. But

Re: [Talk-br] MapRoulette, era Re: Novidades
Hi Arlindo, very good idea! I am one of those 'armchair' mappers mentioned. When using the IBGE data, I found out - all names are printed in capitals, which results in a problem for me not knowing the correct spelling rules when typing e.g. „RUA VINTE E CINCO DE ABRIL - there are many possibilities to write „vinte“, „e“, „cinco“, „de“ and „abril“ in capitals or not. - diacretics are not present in the capitalized words. So I don't know whether it means e.g. „rua do cimeterio“ or „rua do cimetério“ (well, in this case, I learned 'cimetério' should be correct) - there are a number of 'street names' that are not names actually, but are descriptive, e.g. „RUA SEM DENOMINACAO“ (street with no name) or „RUA PROJETADA 02“ or „RODOVIA PARA CAJUITA“ (I guess the latter name means just 'road to Cajuita') So it would be very helpful to have a web site where one can lookup - rules how to type Brazil words correctly - a list of descriptive names which are not actually names and should not be used as street names in OSM kind regards Andreas (Germany) By the way, just now the IBGE layers are not working in JOSM Am 08.11.2014 um 07:25 schrieb Arlindo Pereira: Pessoal, mandei o email a seguir para a lista maproule...@openstreetmap.org mailto:maproule...@openstreetmap.org para ver o que o pessoal de lá (desenvolvedores do sistema e criadores de challenges) acha da tarefa de nomear ruas a partir do mapa do IBGE. Hello everyone, my name is Arlindo Pereira and I'm a fellow mapper from Brazil. First of all, I'd like to thank Martjin for writing the tutorial for writing a Map Roulette challenge. And of course, all the developers of the system. I'd like to share the idea I had to write a challenge (specific only to Brazil) and would like your critic about it. Here in Brazil we have a government office, IBGE, that releases maps in public domain. We already imported some of their files (federal roads, states and cities borders, to name a few). One of their maps has the street names. It'd be very dificult to import and specially make conflation of this data - it wouldn't be a good idea to make a direct import because its shapes have low resolution, the ways drawn by satellite imagery are way better - but it has the street names. So in many areas of our country with no or few mappers, we have an armchair mapping system of drawing the streets via Bing images and inserting their names via this map. This diary page describes the process to add this layer on iD and in JOSM: http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Eitz/diary/24082 (in portugues, but you can catch the idea). So, I was thinking of a challenge that detects highway=residential|tertiary|unclassified roads and open up the editor with this layer already activated on the background, so the user could insert the street name, by reading the name and inserting the name=* tag. My question is: do you think it is feasible? It seems to be an atomic task (name a street based on this other map) and everyone could help (even if not being brazilian). Grüße Joachim ___ Talk-de mailing list Talk-de@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-de

I was dissapointed by the auto routing .. so I looked at the OSM source to find that quite a few roads were not correctly connected. So I've been doing some 'editorials' or 'housekeeping' as I call it. Basicly connecting roads together, adding bridges (using bing to check them first of course). For 'error' checking/indication I use http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?lon=75lat=28zoom=6 .. you have to use the left side box to check various things .. it comes up in default as 'geometry' .. 'routing' is what I use .. it is not infallable but a good indication. 'Highways' is also usefull. I use JOSM as my editor and use its validator to obtain the places where things are not connected or crossing. - I also looked at the Red Fort in Agra .. one contributor has used one offset in their mapping, while another has used a different offset (comparing using bing). I do realise that there is a shadow effect due to the side ways look of bing there. But even so they don't match up. I'm thinking of trying to tide it up. Unfortunatly neither contributor has detailed the source of their information so I cannot judge which is better. Thus I'm inclinde to simple go with Bing .. with no offset. I've made few additions in places of interest to me. One road I have deleted -- it was not conneted on eitehr end and went through some tall buildings .. an obvious error. But mostly connectinmg roads and adding brigdges. Oh .. and a few railway crossings.
Merci beaucoup, Charles Hi all, We had a meeting of the starting openstreetmap Québec provincial group yesterday. One of the points we discussed was the possibility of raising the cohesion of the different local/provincial osm groups in Canada on our respective websites. We were thinking this could serve to create a sort of virtual confederation of openstreetmap canada. Our first goal with this idea is to redirect users who land on our page to other canadian groups if they're wondering about the extent of osm enthusiasm in Canada. Hopefully, we can also share some resources in the future if need be. One good example is the osm ottawa initiative to start a task manager. We'll also be using a task manager that we started recently for a massive import of Montreal data, but we should (or could) probably have a wider discussion about the benefits of having a communal/canada-wide task manager for more everyday mapping projects. In other words, we're trying to compile a list of all the local/provincial osm communities in Canada to link to those on our own websites. Our current partial list is below. Which are the ones we're not aware of? Cheers, Charles Les communautés nous connaissons jusqu'à maintenant sont: The communities we know of now are: Provincial(es): Osm Québec (en démarrage), @osmqc, osmqc.ca (à venir) Local(es): Osm Capitale Nationale, @osmqccapnat Osm Montréal, @osmmtl, openstreetmap-montreal.org Osm Ottawa, www.osmottawa.ca/, http://www.meetup.com/openstreetmap-ottawa/ Osm Toronto, @MappyHourTO (@MatpimeTO ?), http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Toronto/ Osm Vancouver, http://vancouver.wikispot.org/Openstreetmap (?), http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Vancouver/ Il y en a d'autres? Re: [OSM-talk-fr] Manque d'attribution OSM
Re: [Talk-GB] Mapping turn lanes on major roads
I'd always assumed that the correct way to map turn lanes is via: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:turn:lanes . This is what I started using after first using OsmAnd and seeing lane hints on some roads, and wondering how it knew. I started adding them elsewhere (not many so far). As per Andrew's reply, I also tend to reserve separate ways for some physical separation greater than a white line (so a turn lane which becomes a slip road would become a separate way where they fork and the number of lanes on the main carriageway would be reduced accordingly). Re: [Talk-GB] Mapping turn lanes on major roads
The example you give has not been well mapped and the mapper needs to be contacted to explain about lanes. There is not an extra physical road between the carriageways so it should not be added as such. So - should we map a dual carriageway as two parallel roads and a single carriageway as one (with appropriate turn lanes) or is it equally valid (or even perhaps better) to map each turn lane as a separate parallel road, even if there's nothing but a broken line of paint between them? I'm trying to get some idea of concensus here because obviously it'd be wrong for me to go back to another mapper and say you're not doing it correctly if there isn't a concensus about the best way to do it, or the concensus is that what they're doing is at least equally valid. [Talk-GB] Railway edits in the UK that could perhaps benefit from a bit of checking.
An anonymous note adder (http://www.openstreetmap.org/note/267719) and someone on IRC noticed some problematical railway edits near Sutton-in-Ashfield: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/311380489#map=15/53.1247/-1.2346layers=N It looks like an attempt to dual the Robin Hood line went a bit wrong and ended up slicing through an industrial estate and some areas of housing (though I'm sure it was cock-up rather than conspiracy as Sir Bernard Ingham would have said). Looking at some other edits in the same changeset, there are some other, less obvious, issues too, which I've added to the changeset discussion: http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/26590071 The most obvious problem seems to be tracing the railway in but not joining properly to other features (such as crossings). Some information (e.g. cutting=yes) has also been lost. Another local changeset: http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/26587435 has some similar issues. There have been a number of other edits, some with rather a lot of deletions in them, including: http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/26613977 All of these changesets could probably also benefit from a review from local mappers to identify potential issues. Re: [Talk-us] New I.D Feature
I believe that the is_in tag has what you may be looking for and it appears to have a well thought out structure.[1] You can still use addr:city to reflect the correct postal city.[2]. The tag has the same concern as addr:state When a region has a well developed set of boundary polygons the information that could be placed in the is_in tag on an object can usually be derived from the boundaries that contain it. In this case, the information in the tag is redundant. Some contributors even go as far as to delete this tag when they see it as equivalent to the boundary information.[2] Add the debate goes on: it is redundant and removed but uses for offline non-GIS use are overlooked. more importantly when searching by street name, e.g. for 'High Street', it can tell you which of the many results you get back is likely to be the one you want, by saying 'High Street;Fulbourn;Cambridgeshire' and 'High Street;Chapel-en-le-Frith;Derbyshire'. Assume Nominatim would handle addr:city correctly. That would alow you to find '6001 Stony Brook Drive, Manhattan'. But what about 'Stone Brook Drive, Manhattan'. I expect you would want to be able to find that too? That would only work if you added addr:city to the road as well or Nominatim added some means to infer from the addresses that the road is postal code-wise in Manhattan. It gets even more difficult for the addresses that have not yet been mapped. I agree with SteveA Greg on the points they made. I would also like to add the following suggestions and opinions. 1.) We the U.S osm group need to make decisions on address problems that remain unresolved. 2.) Document the changes if any are made/agreed upon in the wiki. 3.) I disagree that adding state data in addresses in the U.S is of little value. Either abbreviated or not. This now seems to point to a much larger problem overall that the osm community has had. Not just in the U.S but in the osm community as a whole. The need for us to come to agreement on address issues that have come to light continue to grow. It seems to me if we want addresses to be apart of the map and done right these issues need to be resolved soon. Other wise we will continue to be held back in any further progress we can make. I am wondering what can done to provide travelers planning information via OSM. You have to rely on local news while you are in a foreign area. How can a gated road be tagged so that travelers know to plan an alternate road or think about hotel reservations for the night? I am not happy with my Skunk Creek gates but at least they are there. More minuta below. Regards, Greg Yep. I put them to the side of the road because a gate on the road implies the wrong message. The Arizona method of road construction is you scrape out a dirt road. The ground is hard enough that we can get away with it. Later on you throw some tar down when you have more money. More money means a cement plug through the river bed so that the road survives flooding. Pray and wait for the funding for a bridge. As long as we have clever mappings like this (two-letter codes to whatever, especially if/as/when they are ISO standards), I am OK with data remaining as two-letter codes. (I am not thrilled, but if there is a way to explain how the dots are connected and how to connect other dots given clever mappings, great). I am glad we are having this discussion. I'm not sure whether pedantic, but it is an interesting and distinct boundary. (One I made off list to Richard Weait and Elliott Plack). Still, for things that need their state address entered in Arizona, I'll do that, instead of AZ. Just me? No. Seriously, understanding a more total semantic (instead of a single or vague concept) as represented by a syntax unit, like a two letter abbreviation, is something we should wave various colored flags about. Careful that as many as possible both discuss and understand larger issues. (Talk-us is a larger stage). It seems to me that OSM remains resilient, talking to itself (ourselves) well.
