Re: [talk-au] What data is useful - request for ideas

2019-05-07 Thread David Dean
Hi Bob,

You're doing some great work with collecting imagery data with Mapillary.
We really appreciate that sort of data available for armchair mapping.

I'd love to meet up for a coffee when you are back up in Armidale, and talk
about your data collection process. I've been meaning to try and get some
comprehensive coverage of Armidale in Mapillary, but haven't really made
any proper moves in that direction just yet.

[talk-au] Registration now open for FOSS4G SotM Oceania Community Day

2018-10-24 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

With less that a month to go until the exciting inaugural FOSS4G SotM
Oceania conference, we have now opened registration for our Community Day,
which will be on Friday 23rd November at the Old Arts Building at the
University of Melbourne.

Everyone in the open-source and open-data geospatial community is welcome,
attendance will be free, with catering provided, and you absolutely don't
need to be registered for the conference itself to attend.

Please feel free to turn up for the whole day (9am-5pm) or for any part of
the day that suits you. We will be hosting mapathons, geospatial software
codesprints, how-to workshops and many other exciting events run by you,
our great open-source and open-data community members.

I look forward to seeing you there, so please head to
https://foss4g-oceania.org/program/community-day to get more information,
or directly to http://communityday.foss4g-oceania.org/ to register to let
us know you are coming!

Please pass this email or send the above links to anyone you think might be
interested, and happy mapping!

David Dean,
Community Day Organiser,

[talk-au] Open geospatial projects wanted for FOSS4G SotM Oceania Community Day

2018-09-05 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

FOSS4G SotM Oceania is hosting a contribution-sprint Community Day on the
final day of the conference, Friday 23rd of November, in the Old Arts
Building at the University of Melbourne. Participation in the Community Day
will be free-of-charge and all participants will be welcome, regardless of
their involvement with the large conference or not.

Projects wanted!

With less than 3 months until Community Day, we are looking for people to
lead open-source and open-data geospatial events that could help open GIS
projects to benefit from concentrated contribution-sprints from members of
the geospatial community.

If you know of any projects that might be interested in receiving
contributions, please let us know by filling out the form at
https://foss4g-oceania.org/attend/community-day/community-day-proposal.

All projects will be publicised on our Community Day page within a few days
of submission, and participants will be able to register for your project
closer to the Community Day. We will keep in touch with you, as a project
organiser, right up until the Community Day itself to ensure a successful
outcome for your project.

Any questions?

We are looking forward to an exciting Community Day as part of FOSS4G SotM
Oceania, and please do not hesitate to reach out and ask if you have any
questions about how our Community Day can help an open-source or open-data
geospatial project important to you.

Thanks,

[talk-au] Beaudesert Mapping Party Next Weekend (10th Feb)

2018-02-03 Thread David Dean
Hi fellow mappers!

Only one week to go to our Beaudesert Mapping Party! Don't forget that I
would be happy to give you a lift from basically anywhere in Brisbane if
you are a bit daunted by the distance [1].

I also have a few more free car phone mounts (with thanks to Mapillary!) to
help with Photo Mapping if you are into that sort of thing.

The mapping party will be starting at 9am on Saturday 10th Feb, and we will
be meeting in the morning for coffee, then surveying, and enjoying a free
lunch in the Scenic Rim Council building while we help each other with our
iDing and JOSMing, etc.

More details on the event are at
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/beaudesert-mapping-party-tickets-41303789747
and please use that link to RSVP so we can plan appropriate amounts of food.

If you can't make it to Beaudesert, please turn up for the monthly
Geospatial Network in Brisbane City on Wed 7 Feb (
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/brisbane-geospatial-network-wed-7-feb-2018-tickets-42339610916)
and keep representing OSM to the local GIS community (I won't be able to be
there myself, unfortunately though).

Re: [talk-au] How do I map left only turning lanes on a motorway?

2018-01-28 Thread David Dean
Hi Joel,

I believe that that example is not mapped correctly, as the turning lane
should only become a separate way when it reaches an actually, physical
separation. While it is just a turning lane, it should just be indicated by
lane tagging on the main way.

I'd move the separation up to the physical separation, and map the turning
lane information on the main way.

We have a few of those in the Brisbane area where intersections are overly
complicated because an early (no longer active) mapper really liked mapping
turning lanes as separate ways, and not all have been fixed.

Re: [talk-au] Mapping Indigenous Place Names

2018-01-26 Thread David Dean
Oh,

And one more thing: At its best OpenStreetMap is about local mappers
mapping what is of interest to them, so we should be attempting to engage
with out local indigenous community and asking them what their local
language is and what features in OSM (or that we can add to OSM) are
important to them.

Some of this might stretch the 'verifiable on the ground' rule a little,
but I think if there is significant local knowledge, it is fair game for
the map.

Re: [talk-au] Mapping Indigenous Place Names

2018-01-26 Thread David Dean
Hey everyone,

Thanks for the great responses. I'm glad I kicked off this thread.

I don't think there is a problem with indicating a name:aus tag if the
local aboriginal name for an area/feature is known, but you haven't done
further research to find the actual language code applicable.

However, it should be a goal to update all name:aus tags to move them to
the appropriate real tags based on the iso639-3 tags. I'm not sure at that
stage whether the name:aus tags would be useful to stay or not. Any ideas?

I am pushing this myself, as I want to build a rendering of OSM that is
focused on the local indigenous knowledge across the country, but I guess
this means I'm going to need to do a bit more work to find out the iso639-3
tags for all indigenous languages in Australia, and maybe even some idea of
what tags are local to what areas.

This is clearly not going to be trivial, but what that's worth doing is? :)

Re: [talk-au] Mapping Indigenous Place Names

2018-01-26 Thread David Dean
Andy,

Absolutely. If the more specific language code is known, it should be used.

Do you know where a list of these language codes for Australian Indigenous
languages might be found? It took me long enough to find the aus code on
https://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php, and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-2_codes. 'nys' isn't listed
on either of them.

I'm no expert (I'm trying to learn more), but
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Aboriginal_languages seems to
suggest that most of Australia can be considered to belong to the
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pama%E2%80%93Nyungan_languages, but I can't
seem to find any sort of language code for that group.

[talk-au] Mapping Indigenous Place Names

2018-01-26 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

I've done a little research, and added the following section to the
Australian Tagging Guidelines at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Australian_Tagging_Guidelines#Places,
and the Multilingual names page at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_names:

Please use the name:aus (aus is the general ISO639-2 code for Australian
Aboriginal Languages) to indicate the indigenous names of places. It would
be useful to do this even when the generally used name is indigenous, to
allow for a potential indigenous rendering of our maps.

I hope we can all agree that this is an excellent idea, and starting adding
these everywhere we can. Here's my first go:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/55769062.

So far we currently have about 4 name:aus tags in the whole country (see
https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/voW). We can do better that that!

Agreed. Very interested in keeping momentum here. I have relationships with
QUT, UQ and Griffith in Brisbane if that helps (although organising smaller
OSM events through any of them has not been successful yet).

Also, we have been discussing some of this on the MaptimeAU slack, in the
#sotm channel, and if anyone would be interested in joining, they would be
welcome. Ask for an invite at https://bit.ly/maptimeau.

I know that people on the Spatial Community Slack would also be interested:
you can get to them at http://thespatialcommunity.org/. Join the

Re: [talk-au] [Aust-NZ] FOSS4G-ANZ?

2017-11-19 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

I definitely want to get involved, particularly if we can incorporate a
local OpenStreetMap State Of The Map (OSM SOTM) conference/track to go
alongside/in partnership with F4G-AUNZ. There is some strong interest in
the AU OSM community in getting something like this off the ground.

If we can incorporate an OSM SOTM track, I would be happy to take point on
that, as well as any assistance need for the wider F4G-AUNZ conference.

I've CC'd this to the OSM Australia Mailing List, so if anyone is coming
from there, the email thread is below.

(I've also sent this to the QGIS mailing list, but I'm not subscribed yet,
so I'm not sure if it will go through)

[talk-au] Would anyone like to kick-start Missing Maps in WA with SSSI?

2017-11-16 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

I've had an enquiry (below) from Lesley Arnold, chair of SSSI WA, who'd
like to get some MIssing Maps action happening over in their part of the
world.

If anyone is interested in helping, please feel free to get in touch with
them.

Arnold
To:

Lesley Arnold (arno...@iinet.net.au) has a question for you about your
event Brisbane's First Ever Missing Maps Mapathon.

Hi David, I am Chair of Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute in WA. We
are enlarging our volunteer program and I am interested in your Missing
Maps Program. Do you run them in other States and is there an opportunity
to partner with SSSI. Lesley

Re: [talk-au] Tag physical business location with their PO Box number

2017-10-09 Thread David Dean
nwastra, Great question!

I'm not sure about the best answer though, as it doesn't seem to be an
issue that has come up before on the wiki or on
http://help.openstreetmap.org.

I would suggest you have two options:

1) Ask on http://help.openstreetmap.org, and see if you get anything
useful. It would be a great question to ask, as I'm sure other people come
across similar circumstances, and getting an answer somewhere public would
be good.
2) Make up a tag so that the information is in the database, and if someone
comes up with a better tagging scheme, they can change it later.
3) Do both.

For (2), I reckon contact:postal='PO Box 2323, Blahtown' would make sense
in the context of the other contact:* tags. According to
https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/contact%3Apostal, it's been used at
least 175 times before, although maybe not quite in that way.

[talk-au] Reminder: West End Mapping Party Is this weekend!

2017-09-25 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone. Don't forget that our West End Mapping Party is on Saturday! I
hope to see you there!

** Reminder: West End Mapping party is this weekend!

Hi OSM,

I hope you are excited about our Mapping Event that is coming up this weekend.
We will be mapping West End on Saturday afternoon, and it'll be a moderate
amount of fun.

Details below, please register at
http://openstreetmap.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f9d4c3db0d039ad4bed7a1489=a27c637dac=a657d4157e.

I hope to see you there, and please pass this message onto anyone who you think
might be interested. Everyone is welcome!

** Where:

Hope St Cafe, 170 Boundary St, West End
(http://openstreetmap.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f9d4c3db0d039ad4bed7a1489=274034071b=a657d4157e)

** The Plan:

Saturday 30th September 2017

13:30 - 14:30: Meet up over coffee, chat about maps

14:30 - 17:00: Split up and map West End

Please feel free to call David on 0407 151 912 on the day if you can't find us.

** About OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is a collaboratively built free map of the world, with simple
wiki-like editing; think ‘Wikipedia’, but for maps. The result is highly
detailed digital maps, created and edited by local communities, that are free
to reproduce without the normal commercial restrictions. It's a fun project to
get involved with; you'll discover how maps are made and uncover the
geographical secrets of your neighbourhood.

Volunteers from all around Brisbane have already begun mapping the roads,
footpaths and cycleways across the city, but now we need your help to improve
our map by adding street and building details and amenities such as
restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops.

** The Event

Participants will be welcome to map however and wherever they want, but here
are a few suggestions for things that other mappers like to collect:

Missing streets, footpaths and cycleways Missing street names Missing building
details Missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, speed
bumps, etc.) Missing reserves, parks, schools and child-care centres Missing
amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats, shelters, etc.)
Details of shops/restaurants/pubs

However, if you aren't sure what you can do, we'll be happy to provide ideas
and help get you started. If you have a GPS device, including a GPS-enabled
phone, bring it along, but you don’t need anything special to map - just a pen
and paper will do. Blank maps for note-taking can easily be made available if
prior notice is provided.

[talk-au] Upcoming RGSG/OpenStreetMap mapping event

2017-07-13 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

(If you don't want me to send these emails to you, please let me know and
I'll stop)

As a follow up to our earlier successful RGSQ Mapping Days event (
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane/Mapping_Parties/2017-06_RGSQ_Mapping_Days),
we are having a short, casual, one-day follow up event at Nundah in
associate with the RGSQ's Nundah Map Group.

This will be on Friday 4th August from around 10-16:30, and further details
are available on the OSM wiki at https://wiki.openstreetmap.
org/wiki/Brisbane/Events/2017-08-04_Nundah_Mapping_Party.

Please feel free to follow that link for more details, and please let me
know within the next two weeks if you wish to attend. The location is still
TBA, but will be in the Nundah area, probably at the BCC Nundah Library.

I apologise for this event being on a weekday. If you cannot attend, please
wait for the next one, which will hopefully be at a slightly more
work-friendly time!

Thanks, and Happy Mapping!

[talk-au] OSM/RGSQ Mapping Days - Call for OSM Mentors

2017-06-06 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

I am looking for mentors and/or participants for a pair of 'Mapping Days'
in two weeks (Wed/Thu Jun 21/22) in Milton, Brisbane with the Royal
Geographic Society of Queensland (http://www.rgsq.org.au/). I am particular
interested in finding another person or two who is familiar with
OpenStreetMap to help me run the show and act as mentors for the 9 or so
RGSQ members who will be new to OSM.

I am planning on conducting a day of armchair mapping and a day of survey
mapping around the Milton Area. More details are available on the OSM wiki
pages at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane/Mapping_Parties/2017-07_RGSQ_Mapping_Days
.

If anyone is interested in helping out as a mentor (at no cost to you), or
wish to attend as a participant (cost is $20 to cover RGSQ admin costs),
please let me know as soon as you can.

Sorry for the short notice!

- David Dean

Hi everyone,

I've had to cancel Monday's mapping meetup due to a lack of interest.
I'll send details about the next event in the near future.

Calling all map-lovers, amateur cartographers, surveyors and
cartophiles! There’s a friendly meetup of OpenStreetMappers in
Brisbane soon, and we hope to have a few interested newbies thrown
 into the mix.

 When: Monday 18th October 2010 18:30 - 22:00
Where: Grange Library - 79 Evelyn Street, The Grange, Qld, 4051
 Web: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane_Mapping_Meetups

OpenStreetMap is a collaboratively built free map of the world, with
simple wiki-like editing;  think ‘Wikipedia’, but for maps. The result
is highly detailed digital maps, created and edited by local
communities, that are free to reproduce without the normal commercial
restrictions.  It's a fun project to get involved with; you'll
discover how maps are made and uncover the geographical secrets of
 your neighbourhood.

Volunteers from all around Brisbane have already begun mapping the
roads, footpaths and cycleways across the city, but now we need your
help to improve your local area by adding street details and amenities
such as restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops.

If you have a laptop, bring it along and we'll show you how easy it is
to use OpenStreetMap on your own computer. Internet access will be
available through shared mobile broadband and library Wi-Fi (Brisbane
 Libraries membership required).

You are welcome to map however and wherever you want, but here are a
 few ideas for the evening:

    * Fix OpenStreetMap errors in your local area
    * Help add roads and other features using aerial imagery
    * Put your house (and your neighbour’s) on the map
    * Improve suburb boundaries
    * Share your local knowledge to add points of interest (POIs)
    * Experiment with OpenStreetMap map-making and editing tools
    * Swap tips on using OpenStreetMaps to navigate on your mobile
 phone or GPS device

However, if you aren't sure what you can do, we'll be happy to provide
ideas and help get you started.

We have the meeting room booked from 18:30 to 22:00, but feel free to
turn up within those times whenever you like. We’re trying to organise
some alcoholic (and otherwise) drinks for the meetup, and we'll
probably order a few pizzas on the night. If you are coming, please
bring $10 to help pay for this.

If you can come, please let David Dean know before the event, so we
can have some idea of how many drinks to take on the night.

Contact David Dean on 0407 151 912 to RSVP or for more information.

Ordnance Survey's OpenData license specifically allows sub-licensing,

the 'free and open licence' when section 4 (attribution) is taken into
 account.

Section 4 only ensures that OSM provide attribution, not that the end
user of the OpenData data in OSM has to.

For example, hypothetically a 2/3 majority of OSMers could vote for
CC0 under the CTs, but this would not be compatible for OpenData as
the end-user publishers of the CC0 OSM data would not be obliged to
attribute either OSM or OpenData.

map however and wherever you want, but here are a few suggestions for
things that other mappers like to collect:

   * Missing streets, footpaths and cycleways
   * Missing street names
   * Missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings,
 speed bumps, etc.)
   * Missing reserves, parks, schools and child-care centres
   * Missing amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats,

[talk-au] Looking for a Central NSW OpenStreetMapper for Spatial Interest Group Presentation

2010-08-10 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

I've had some interest from the Illawarra Geospatial User Group for
someone to give them a presentation about OSM and answer questions
afterwards. I was hoping someone subscribing to this list may be able
to help.

I *think* the presentation will be on the 31st August, but I'm not
sure at the moment. I have already given a similar presentation myself
to the equivalent Queensland group, details of which are available at
http://groups.google.com.au/group/sitsig. I also have a number of
slides available at http://www.slideshare.net/dbdean that you can feel
free to use or crib from to make your own presentation.

Please feel free to ask any more questions here, or if you are
interested please reply to me and I'll pass your details on.

- David

one or more OSM contacts in the Wollongong area (Illawarra region)
that'd be great. I'll pass your email onto Peter.

Calling all map-lovers, amateur cartographers, surveyors and
cartophiles! There’s a friendly meetup of OpenStreetMappers in
Brisbane soon, and we hope to have a few interested newbies thrown
 into the mix.

 When: Monday 16th August 2010 18:30 - 22:00
Where: Grange Library - 79 Evelyn Street, The Grange, Qld, 4051
 Web: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane_Mapping_Meetups

OpenStreetMap is a collaboratively built free map of the world, with

help to improve your local area by adding street details and amenities
such as restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops.

    * Improve suburb boundaries

If you can come, please let David Dean know by Friday 13th August, so we
can have some idea of how many drinks to take on the night.

Contact David Dean on 0407 151 912 to RSVP or for more information.

[talk-au] Fwd: OSM Mapping Party - Bell 31 Oct?

2010-07-14 Thread David Dean
Hi talk-au,

I've gotten an interesting request from Chris McAlister and Alex
Webster for OSM to get involved in a MapMyTown event at Bell, Qld. It
would tentatively be scheduled for 31 October.

I will be collaborating with Chris and Alex in getting OSM involved in
this event, and having access to the data afterwards. If anyone else
is interested, please let us know.

I've attached a brief overview of the event to this email, but if
talk-au doesn't work with attachments let me know and I'll send the
text in a future email.

Chris, Alex,

Answering Alex's first question, the next OSM meetup will be at Grange
library on Monday 16th August. Details of all past and future events
are available at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Brisbane_Mapping_Party.

I think that the local OSM community would be very interested in
taking part in the MapMyTown event. It looks like a few local mappers
(mostly cybercrypt and Roscoe - see http://imgur.com/ivJMd.png) have
already gotten most of the streets in the town:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-26.93368lon=151.45209zoom=16layers=B000FTF,
but I'm sure there's still plenty of detail left for inclusion in
http://osm.org. We would also be very interested in using the final
surveys from your project to improve the data in OSM, assuming that
the data will be made available under a suitable license.

We do have a mapping meetup at the Grange library (see
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Brisbane_Mapping_Party)
planned for October 18th, but I'm sure we can get interested OSMers to
both events. Please keep me in the loop and let me know if you need
any help organising the event.

With your permission, I'd like to forward this email to a interested
people in the local OSM community to get feedback from a wider
audience.

Thanks for the email, and happy mapping,

- David Dean

Re: [talk-au] OSM Mapping Party - Bell 31 Oct?

2010-07-14 Thread David Dean
The Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute, Queensland Young
Professionals Committee (SSSIQ YPs) are running their MapMyTown
project for the first time in 2010.

The project:

The MapMyTown project aims to use as many available spatial
surveying technologies and methods as possible to build spatial
resources and a spatial model of a small Queensland town.

Some of the anticipated outcomes include:

3D building models derived from laser scanner survey,
GIS network models of town utilities such as water mains and road networks,
Location of Permanent Survey Marks observation of networks,
GNSS capture of important features, including culturally important items,
Google earth fly through and layers,
Satellite imagery aerial photography products, and
GIS generated mapping products, including attributing photographs.

The project will run onsite over a weekend, with time allocated for
data development after the site component has been completed.

The aims:

There are 4 main aims for this project:

1.Work with a regional council town to develop spatial resources
that can be used for personal purposes,

2.Improve the understanding of spatial professions and technologies
within the community,

3.Provide an opportunity for spatial professionals to develop new
skills and use new technologies,

4.Provide an opportunity for spatial companies to demonstrate their
products to an audience of spatial professionals and the community.

5.Help promote the spatial industry within Universities and regional areas

The place:

At this stage, the Town of Bell in the Western Downs Regional Council
(WDRC) area has been identified as the preferred location.

The players:

The key players in the MapMyTown project are:

The SSSI Queensland Young Professionals – They will be responsible for
the project development, management and organisation for the entire
project. This includes confirming a location, engaging sponsors,
involving the local council marketing the project to spatial
professionals.

Western Downs Regional Council – The council will be involved as much
as they wish. Any spatial products developed as an outcome of this
project will be provided to council.

The town community – The town community, and progress society will be
a key player in this project, as their support is paramount to a
successful outcome. It is envisaged that the project will also provide
some level of spatial training to interested parties.

The spatial professionals – This group will be responsible for the
majority of the spatial information and products developed through
this project. It is envisaged that this group will consist of three
major streams, the teachers, the students and the professionals:

The teachers will be those spatial professionals who are willing to
teach other spatial professionals about how to use specific
technologies or methods and techniques.

The students are those spatial professionals who are wishing to learn
about specific technologies, or methods and techniques.

The professionals are those people who want to participate, but just
wish to collect spatial information for the project.

It must be emphasised that an individual could participate in all 3
streams over the course of the project, depending on their
preferences.

The sponsors:

Sponsors will be a critical component in the provision of new
technologies and infrastructure required to complete this project.
Spatial Industry companies have previously been very generous with
their support of the spatial industry, and we hope that this project
will give them the opportunity to showcase their products to a broad
section of spatial professionals as well as the community.

Some of the sponsorship opportunities we are hoping to secure are:

Technology – laser scanners, total stations, GNSS technology, mobile
mapping, imagery: you name it we can use it for this project! It’s a
great opportunity to showcase both your latest and greatest, as well
as those historical technologies.

Financial – Obviously this kind of project requires a fair amount of
organisation, and we’re hoping for some financial support to make the
job of administration, marketing outcomes easier.

For more information:

If you would like to be involved with the MapMyTown project as a
participant, sponsor or just have general questions or comments,
please contact the SSSIQ YPs Chair, Chris McAlister @
madamefishfigh...@rocketmail.com or on 0407668512

Hi everyone,

Less than one week to go to the Bribie Island Mapping Party!

If you are coming please let me know (if you haven't already) by
Wednesday so that I can ensure I have enough breakfast supplies, and
that there are enough seats for Lunch.

For the BBQ breakfast in the park, please let me know if you have any
special dietary requirements that won't be met by bacon, sausages and
eggs, and I'll make sure there's something there for you too.

See you soon!

Calling all map-lovers, amateur cartographers, surveyors and
cartophiles! Local OpenStreetMappers are having a mapping party soon,
 and we want your help.

 When:     Saturday 17th July 2010
 Agenda:
09:00 - 09:30    BBQ Breakfast at Quota Park, Welsby Parade
    09:30 - 13:00    Mapping
13:00 - 14:00    Lunch at Bribie Island Hotel, 29 Sylvan Beach Esplanade
 Details:
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bribie_Island_Mapping_Party_July_2010

OpenStreetMap is a collaboratively built free map of the world, with
simple wiki-like editing;  think ‘Wikipedia’, but for maps. The result
is highly detailed digital maps, created and edited by local
communities, that are free to reproduce without the normal commercial
restrictions.  It's a fun project to get involved with; you'll
discover how maps are made and uncover the geographical secrets of
 your neighbourhood.

Volunteers from all around Brisbane have already begun mapping the
roads, footpaths and cycleways across the city, but now we need your
help to improve our map by adding street details and amenities such as
 restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops.

For July, we will be mapping Bribie Island. After beginning with a
delicious BBQ breakfast at Quota Park, we will split up and spread out
over Bribie Island to collect information for inclusion in
OpenStreetMap. You are welcome to map however and wherever you want,
but here are a few suggestions for things that other mappers like to
 collect:

    * Missing streets, footpaths and cycleways
    * Missing street names
    * Missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings,
 speed bumps, etc.)
    * Missing reserves, parks, schools and child-care centres
    * Missing amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats,
 shelters, etc.)
    * Details of shops/restaurants/pubs

However, if you aren't sure what you can do, we'll be happy to provide
ideas and help get you started. If you have a GPS device, including a
GPS-enabled phone, bring it along, but you don’t need anything special
to map - just a pen and paper will do. Blank maps for note-taking can
easily be made available if prior notice is provided.

After spending a couple of hours surveying we will rejoin at the
Bribie Island Hotel at 13:00 for lunch and to debrief. If you have a
laptop, bring it along and we'll show you how easy it is to use
OpenStreetMap on your own computer. Internet access will be made
available through shared mobile broadband (or bring your own).

If you can’t or don’t feel like helping in the physical survey, or you
just want to be social, please feel free to turn up at the Bribie
Island Hotel anyway. We’ll be there between 13:00 and 14:00 and we’ll
be happy to introduce you to OpenStreetMap, and maybe get you set up
 to map your local area.

If you can come, please let David Dean know by Wednesday the 14th of
June, so we can have some idea of how will be turning up on the day.

Contact David Dean on 0407 151 912 to RSVP or for more information.

    * Missing street names
    * Missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings,
 speed bumps, etc.)
    * Missing reserves, parks, schools and child-care centres
    * Missing amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats,
 shelters, etc.)
    * Details of shops/restaurants/pubs

(please let me know if you don't want these emails in future)

[talk-au] Logan City Mapping Party is soon (09:00 20 Mar @ Logan Gardens)

2010-03-07 Thread David Dean
Hi everyone,

Just a quick email to let you all know that the March's mapping party
for Logan City is all organised and ready for people to start telling
me that they are coming.

We are going to start with a BBQ breakfast in Logan Gardens park in
Logan Central, followed by a few hours of mapping, and then lunch at
the Logan City Tavern around 13:00.

I had hoped to get some online mapping done as a group activity after
lunch, but I finding it difficult to get internet access sorted out.
If anyone can donate some mobile internet bandwidth and can shared it
wirelessly using their laptop or smartphone, that would be awesome.
Otherwise, I'll see if I can sort out something like that myself. No
guarantees at this stage obviously.

Full details on the event are at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Logan_Mapping_Party_March_2010, and
it would be greatly appreciated if you can let me know if you are
coming and maybe pick a slice of the Mapping Cake. If the wiki
editing is too daunting to do so, just email me and I'll edit it for
you.

Hope to see you all there, and happy mapping!

Michael,

Can you please submit your patches to the slippymap plugin for NearMap to
the JOSM trac at josm.openstreetmap.de (if you haven't already) so that the
mainline slippymap plugin can handle NearMap without us having to download
patched versions.

[talk-au] Macleay Island Mapping party is soon! (Sat 21st Nov)

2009-11-09 Thread David Dean

Hi everyone. Just a quick note to let any Brisbane or nearby mappers know
that the Macleay Island mapping party is fast approaching.

We will be attempting to map as much of Macleay Island as we possibly can on
Saturday the 21st of November, so the more people the merrier. Details are
on the OSM wiki at:

Please claim your slice of mapping pie so we can coordinate easily, and
please pass this invitation on to anyone you think might be interested.

http://map-data.bigtincan.com/wms/nearmap.php?bbox=153.0113011,-27.4445217,153.0115373,-27.4443121srs=EPSG:4326width=500height=500

returns the right region, but is not 500*500 pixels in width. It seems that
the zoom level is not getting any closer than z18, while I think NearMap can
support a fair way past that.

[talk-au] Brisbane Mapping Partys: October + Date Claim for November

2009-09-20 Thread David Dean

Brisbane mappers (and other interested parties),

I have arranged two more OpenStreetMap meetups for October and November
respectively.

The October will be a social pub meet at the Breakfast Creek Hotel on Friday
9th October to try and get together to discuss boring mapping stuff and
maybe collect some street numbers or something equally fun in a relatively
well mapped area. Details here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane/Mapping_Parties/2009-10

However, the November event should be awesome-fun, and I'm getting it out
their nice and early to make sure that no-one bothers to sign up until a
couple of days before it starts.

We are going to do catch a ferry across from Redland Bay to Macleay Island
and see how much of an entire island we can map in a single day. I haven't
completely organised everything at this stage, but I have put up the page
nice and early so everyone who is interested can hopefully clear out the day
on their calendar to come along. (Some) details are
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane/Mapping_Parties/2009-11 .

So, if you feel like some steak and beers and chatting about boring mapping,
I'll see you in 3 weeks. And if you want to get out there and complete a
nice definite mapping goal in one day, I'll see you in two months.

Have fun everyone, and please pass this message onto anyone you think might
be interested.

Re: [talk-au] Junctions (to name or not to name)

2009-06-29 Thread David Dean

In my experience gosmore doesn't care at all about the names of the streets
except for displaying them and searching for them. I've certainly never had
a problem with gosmore routing not recognising a roundabout because it was
unnamed.

If someone can show me an example (a osm map link will do - preferably in
QLD as I already have the gosmore file) of a roundabout that causes this
problem, and I'll look into fixing the bug in gosmore.

- David

Stephen Hope wrote:

This is most definitely a problem with Gosmore. The fact is, most
roundabouts do not have names, and artificially giving them one to
make a renderer (or routing program) happy is tagging for the
renderer. Even if a roundabout did have a name, I'd be happier if the
routing software just said turn onto roundabout, take second exit on
Smith Highway than if it said turn onto Great Circle, turn onto
Smith Highway. Names on roundabouts are so uncommon that I'd be
looking for a road called Great Circle.

Or are you saying that if the entry and exit roads and roundabout all
have the same name it ignores the roundabout entirely, and this
behaviour is what is broken? That's not too hard a fix to do in a
program. Anything marked as a junction or roundabout should be getting
special treatment anyway. It shouldn't matter if the roundabout has no
name, the name of the street you're on, or the name of a different
crossing street, as long as it is marked as a roundabout. It's still
a bug if it causes a problem.

 2009/6/28 Ross Scanlon i...@4x4falcon.com:
This is not a problem with gosmore, the problem occurs where you have a
street going through a roundabout without ANY name on the roundabout with
the street named on both sides of the roundabout.  It does not recognise
the street continues through the roundabout and then out the other side.
If there's no name on the streets or roundabout then it work's
correctly.  Likewise if the streets are named and the roundabout is named
 then there's not a problem.

Yes, but long term I can see people using openstreetmap data just for
navigation, and having their traces would be very useful for traffic
modelling purposes to improve the routing algorithms. In this case the only
real information OSM has on these people are their traces, so we would need
some sort of protection in place if they are worried about this sort of
thing.

One solution might be to always drop the last and first N minutes,
kilometres, turns, etc. from every journey, where N is a random number
chosen uniformly from a fairly wide range (between 5 and 10 minutes).

This would ensure that most of the travelling information is kept, but no
information about start points and destinations are. These end points would
be less likely to be useful for road-speed modelling anyway.

Also, does everyone here realise that private traces still show up for
everyone in JOSM/Potlatch/etc. (without any timestamp or user information)?
It just means that the files are not visible in your traces area on the
website. Ie. the gps points themselves are still publically accessible
through the API, you just can't tell who made them or at what time they were
made.

[OSM-talk] Automatic generation of 3D environments from OSM data

2008-11-22 Thread David Dean

Has anybody else here heard of Procedural? They put out a commercial
application called CityEngine that can procedurally generate a 3D city from
a imported OSM street network. Details here:
http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=57701 and there's an interesting
video on using OSM data here:
http://www.procedural.com/cityengine/import-export/layer-import.html .

What I'm wondering is what impact does OSM's CC license have on this sort of
stuff? I guess the entire 3D model would then have to be delivered under CC
as well right (if it was published)? So if a person used open street map to
help film a CG movie scene then what has to be released CC? The 3D models,
the textured models, those video scenes from the movie or the entire movie?

[talk-au] Brisbane Mapping Party Marathon

Inspired by the London Mapping Party Marathons, I thought it might be fun to
get some of the Brisbane area mappers together for a quick (1-2 hrs +
drinks) little midweek evening mapping party sometime in October. I think
New Farm might be a good place to start as it has some roads missing, but
others fairly well mapped that could do with a POI injection.

I have tentatively scheduled it for the evening of Wednesday 10th October.
Details are here:

(Uh, maybe this is awkward for the renderer implementation. Could be
better to prefix the *value* instead: highway=left:bus_stop?)

It seems to me that you could define the two sides of a way independent of the
direction (if any) of the way. I'm just not sure what you would call the two
sides.

For example, lets start with north and south. This would unambiguously
define the two sides for all ways that are not running directly (or close to)
north-south. East and west would work for those of course, but we want the
same name no matter what the angle of the road.

Maybe you could use clockwise and anticlockwise to define the side of that
portion of the road you would get if you rotated it in that direction.

So what I am basically getting at is that you don't need to define the side of
the road based on the way direction, as it can be defined by the compass points,
I'm just not sure what the two labels would be. Maybe north-or-east and
south-or-west shortened to noe and sow could work if everything was
clearly defined on the wiki.

I'm glad we can ignore it, but how do I turn it off. Every time I use
Ctrl+T to open another firefox tab, the debug info comes up and I
cannot use Potlatch properly without reloading the whole page.

Also, whilst I am in mood for constructive criticism :) is it possible
to make it so the autocomplete works more like excel in that if there
is only one autocomplete option valid it actually fills out the
remainder of the text box but is highlighted so it can be typed over.
This way you can just tab to the next field once you have entered
'hig' instead of them having to hit up arrow before leaving the field.

If you aren't sure what I'm on about, have a play with excel or any
other GUI offering similar autocomplete functionality.

Thanks heaps for the new update though, it truly is getting better all
