[OSM-legal-talk] Maxspeed tags in Australia
Hi Would it be possible to have a version of the OSM licence change inspector which completely ignored tags of maxspeed source:maxspeed maxspeed:source whether for addition deletion or modification. This could be just for Australia. The reason is that in Australia an anonymous user has used a bot to add the maxspeed values for residential roads that did not already have them (the vast majority). This user used its own account to do this and has declined the CT. The values are often wrong anyway and it will be benificial for the data quality when these are finally purged. Another (non anonymous) user has used his own account to run another bot to fix some maxspeed:source tags to source:maxspeed. This user is also a decliner. These values are also not usefull in the database. Howevewr while they are there the OSM inspoector is recording them as modifications that will degrade the data at licence change time and painting them yellow. With so many yelow lines on the Australia map due to these 3 tags it is impossible to tell which ways really need to be remapped to avoid unnecessary and damagining way revrsion. Once I have remapped all the red ways in areas that I have personally completely surveyed I would very much like to reclaim as much as possible clean mappers work from the real yellow roads before we lose that work. Nick PS -If a decliner has actually gone out and observerd the speed limit sign for an existing way edited by an acceptor, (very unlikely), then we would not be alerted to this. I don't see this as a problem. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

E.g. if people would trace flight-routes into OSM, they would add lots of confusion, as they are not on the ground. Flight routes or historic AND not existing on ground anymore objects is simply confusing. Flight routes I tend to agree - also sea routes THESE are another working example of the need for secondary data layers. or historic AND not existing on ground anymore objects is simply confusing. Adding tags to a current street/way that states that it was once a Roman street on the other hand is of course okay (as long as it was important and is currently in a broader sense touristically important), because it is still on the ground. From my point of view that is just a matter of rendering. There are two areas here and they are getting merged which is part of the confusion. Adding data on when an object APPEARED on the ground is something that the main database should be retaining, so a specialist rendering stage could create a map at any time in the past. For the large majority of existing objects that is all that is required. So tidying up 'start_date' is all that is required, and should be encouraged. NEW objects appearing now can have the correct start_date which may well be in the future. This just leaves the problem of objects which no longer exist ... If they cease to exist in the future, then the data has already be captured, and worse case, the edit history will always retain that material. Some features will still be present, but their original use may have changed at some point - railway track beds that are currently being used as footpaths - the date at which that change occurred would be useful to retain - somewhere. And again edit history may actually have that information. Although around here, the track is being relaid, so the change is from footpath back to railway. This just leaves the mater of how to handle all this newly created 'history', and I would be quite happy if that was a secondary data layer, so that rather than deleting data is simply gets archived. This layer would also then allow those of us who have the data to expand on it to fill in the gaps. The only thing that I find irritating is that all of the 'new history' will also be present in the edit history of the main database, and THAT edit history is just as important as the actual appearance and disappearance of an object. So that should also be duplicated on the 'historic' archive. Which doubles the amount of data stored. Simply providing mechanisms to view, add and hide this 'live history' makes a lot more sense to me, and filling in the gaps on that history is what we are actually discussing, so how does one decided what data stays in the main database and what is archived? Just retaining all where it is currently stored just seems the logical way forward to me ... although if a mechanism can be added for secondary layers ... -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk// Firebird - http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Making dealing with license problem objects easier
Now that we have Frederik's very helpful license vulnerability tool, I've been doing some pre-emptive work in my area. Without re-opening old wounds about the merit or otherwise of the forthcoming data loss, I'd like to make some suggestions arising out of the patterns I've noticed that mean we don't shoot ourselves in the foot quite so much. It's really time consuming making these changes and there are a lot of them. There is a fairly small number of people (about 20) in my area who have not accepted (and two who have explicitly declined). I imagine most of the non-accepters are just no longer receiving email - I have had only one reply to my messages. While there are a few places I can't deal with, e.g. because I can't see from Bing what's going on, or I don't personally know the name of something, in the majority of cases I can verify something from satellite, OSSV, local knowledge or my own previous surveys. However, to fix these I have to not only remove e.g. the offending way but also carefully check or replace all the nodes for connecting features because those are often independently contaminated. This process also loses the continuous history of the feature. It's particularly fiddly (and easy to miss) when objects are part of a number of relations. Suggestion 1 I'd like to suggest we invent a tag which says I have checked this object for changes by non-accepters and personally verified it against sources independent of the changes of those non-accepters who made changes, so that when that tag is added, the changes the non-accepter made become my responsibility. e.g. verifylicense=bing (I checked it against bing) or verifylicense=bing;local_knowledge (I checked the route on Bing and I personally know the name) This way we don't have to do lots of unnecessary deleting and replacing, and we keep the history. Frederik's tool could take account of this tag in what it displays as vulnerable. Suggestion 2 A very common pattern is * non-accepter adds a feature F which is joined to one or more ways W at node new N; this contaminates the whole of W even though all they've done is inserted a node into it. * lots of other people make changes to W in other respects, whose edits would be lost In this case, I think it would be reasonable to say that if N is inserted between two other nodes such that the three form a straight line (to within some fairly generous tolerance) that the way is not affected and the node can be removed from it along with the genuinely offending way without affecting the one involved as a side effect, and needn't be marked as such in the inspector. Suggestion 3 There is a particularly pernicious pattern where user 'ulfl' (others too, but by far the most prolific) went round some years ago changing lots of tag names without changing anything else, and he has now explicitly declined the CT, so there are now lots of real changes on top which will be lost because of these purely mechanical changes. I think we should not count these as significant edits for the purposes of the license change. If someone changes shop=barbers to shop=hairdressers etc, these are admin changes not geographical ones. If ulfl is still on this list, would you agree or object? David ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

This is what has been done with the TIGER name expansion edits in the US. The user has declined but explicitly allowed all of his changesets tagged with bot=yes to be relicensed and Frederik's map takes this into account as documented here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Quick_History_Service Of course we can't just go rampaging through all changesets and marking them as clean... but it is a mechanism that is available. Of course all this is assuming that the final process will honor these same rules. Toby ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

It is a bit questionable to use it on stuff that I could have mapped myself. I suggest that odbl=clean only be added if you have indeed modified the object in a way that you believe obliterates any previously held copyright by a non-agreer. If this has resulted in a situation where the object is now, again, in the same state it was before a non-agreer toched it, then you *can* place odbl=clean for quick results but after the next weekly planet dump the OSMI will (should!) pick up the situation and say the disagreer's contribution is now irrelevant because none of it is present in the final object, so it's clean, i.e. odbl=clean is not even strictly necessary. I think we should not count these as significant edits for the purposes of the license change. Yes. I think there is a consensus that such an edit does not give you (enough) copyright to demand that the object is now yours. Some people making such mechanical edits have been cooperative in identifying those of their changesets which have been mechanically created (e.g. balrog-kun), and we have started to compile a list of such changesets on http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WTFE (under changeset overrides). I have contacted ulfl a while ago asking for similar help but have not received a response. I reckon it is going to be down to us, then, to compile the list by inspecting his past changesets, or at least the larger ones. I have a facility where I can enter the changeset IDs collected on the wiki page into OSMI, and changes from those changesets will then not be highlighted there or in the editors any more. This is a manual process and doesn't happen daily but I try to monitor the page. Feel free to add ulfl changesets to the list if you are confident that they have been created mechanically. Or I have an equivalent that uses the Leaflet library instead ( http://brewmap.maps3.org.uk/client/brewmap.html - source at https://github.com/jones139/BrewMap). The best way to provide the data will depend on how much data you have to display - the two examples above are for very modest amounts of data - as you get more and more you will need a way of providing just the data for the area of map being displayed. While this specific datasets has only aggregations of buildings. Another example is streetname labels: http://mirror.openstreetmap.nl/kadaster/nwb-top10-labels.gif TOP10 = Cadastre NWB = National Road File So it seems that Government offices are not integrated theirself. And no, there are no shared attributesid's. Thus I am contacting both offices if we could integrate the data with eachother, forming: linked open data. I can't yet imagine what it will mean for the OSM project in Finland. I'm hoping that something could spin out of this kind of massive data availability where 'fix errors' is the new 'Share Alike'. No need for database rights etc., because it is obvious: everyone can make the map better, and it is backed by the government that you already paid for to do so. I'm a little tired of people like that and I hope that by drastically reducing the amount of map on our front page we will get rid of them. We are here to make good map data; we're not here to indulge those who would like a map portal with all the bells and whistles (and who, as someone else professed, cannot be bothered to fix data in OSM when there are problems). In my eyes, we are not aimed at map consumers. We are, to borrow business terms, a producer or maybe a distributor, but we're not a retailer. Our product needs a bit of pretty packaging and customer service added before it can compete with the consumer friendliness of something like Google Maps; such pretty packaging and customer service can be provided by enthusiastic individuals, or nonprofits, or commercial entities - maybe even by other open projects. But I don't see this on our plate. Well, IMHO, this is a fundamental mistake. The best way to attract contributors is to provide a good product that they want even more of. I have friends who would probably contribute to OSM, but first they would need to *use* OSM, and it's not quite good enough for their needs. Why do people contribute to Google Maps? Because they use Google Maps. If the broader goal here is maximum possible uptake of free data, then we need to do everything possible to encourage that. Having artificial boundaries like oh, we're just a map data project; tools and map servers are someone else's problem is just wrong.

Re: [Talk-it] Elenco strade italiane per comune
Ciao Pietro! The generated maps are vector graphics images, including a street index and city grid. [...] By default, the maps are generated in PDF format with the street index at the bottom, with an additional CSV containing the street index. To see the available options to change this behavior, please run: ./ocitysmap2-render --help IMPOSM http://imposm.org/ Si tratta di una libreria python che ti permette di importare file .osm o .pdf dentro postgis (lo sviluppatore dice che e' possibile estendere anche a spatialite ed altro, ma, per ora, nessuno lo ha fatto). Il tutorial e' molto esplicativo http://imposm.org/docs/imposm/latest/tutorial.html Puoi decidere di personalizzare cosa importare andando a creare un oggetto dichiarando tag e geometrie che ti interessano - http://imposm.org/docs/imposm/latest/mapping.html Per le performance faccio un altro copia/incolla You can import 1 GB .osm.bz2 (~Germany) on a system with 2 GB RAM and Europe (~5 GB PBF) works fine on a system with 8 GB RAM. Larger imports (planet.osm) are still possible but will take longer if you don’t have 16 GB or more (about 20h with 8GB). Quindi che ben venga la tua idea :) A presto ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

2012/1/4 Pietro peter.z...@gmail.com Ciao a tutti!
Hi list Sorry for writing in English again as my Estonian is still too weak. I noticed that a lot of abbreviations such as mnt and pst have appeared on the map where maantee and puiestee used to be. Vitalts had made this change, motivated by information on the Estonian OSM wiki page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Et:Key:addr My worry is that this approach is exactly opposed to the consensus that has been reached internationally: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Abbreviation_.28don.27t_do_it.29 Abbreviations in name tags should always be fully expanded. A renderer can contract them if it so wishes but the OSM data should be complete and unambiguous. There is a short_name tag that could be used for a shortened form of the name if there is a desire to store it. What do you think of changing the policy in Estonia to using expanded name tags and optionally short_name tags? - Bartosz ___ Talk-ee mailing list Talk-ee@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ee

Re: [Talk-ee] Abbreviations in names
I don't see that the main renderers (mapnik) and search engines (nominatim) will handle Estonian street name abbreviations properly any time soon. Actually, nominatim has an abbreviation database that it automatically consults. But this mechanism assumes that the full long is in OSM and the user enters an abbreviation, not the other way around. So the current Estonian policy breaks it :(. No abbreviations for other cases, e.g. person names This is actually an interesting question in itself: A. Laikmaa as it is now or better Ants Laikmaa without abbreviation? But this is just my opinion, always subject to re-open the discussion. I would definitely like to keep this discussion going. I still think there is a strong case for no abbreviations, internationally, including Estonia. - Bartosz ___ Talk-ee mailing list Talk-ee@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ee
