Hello Keith,

KR I have tried clicking Yes and repairing the file, but it doesn't
KR help. Every few seconds, this message pops up, making it
KR impossible to work.

You'd better to find out which IMAP mailbox it is and in
disconnected state repair it through folder maintenance. Or you could
use 'Clear cache' button.

KR Can someone tell me the best way to deal with this? Since this is
KR IMAP, can I just delete the TBB file and let TB rebuild it?

Yes, it is another way, but you should delete both TBB and TBI
files (the way 'Clear cache' button works)

KR I'm still on version 3.0.9.13. One reason that I have never
KR upgraded this version and completely stopped using The Bat! some
KR time ago is that it is unusable due to a constantly recurring
KR error message.

Since 3.0.9.13 there was a lot of changes of how IMAP works with
message bases. It should be more reliable now, so if you'll fix
corrupted base, try the newer version.

Since you are a IMAP user I would strongly recommend to update to the newest
beta version. Really, you *must* do this. ;-)

An error occurred while reading the message base ...\Fastmail
(IMAP)\55DBCDFF.TBB. Do you want to repair the message base now?

This error message is a bit silly, perhaps we need to discuss these messages
in IMAP accounts in general with the developers. Everything is on the server

Annoying...

Yes, you can. You can do this on the file system with your favorite explorer
or just use TB!. That's what I would recommend.
Right-click on the folder where this file belongs to, navigate to Properties
and select Delete cache. I hope and think this option is given in your
version. Seeing your description the file we're are talking about has to be
in the inbox, right?

After the cache is deleted, TB! will fetch the whole message information from
the server and everything should be back to normal.

Nevertheless, please *do* thinking about to update to the newest version. IMAP
has made big efforts since the version you're using and you probably would be
sad having not updated earlier. ;-)

Hi,

MB Since you are a IMAP user I would strongly recommend to update to the newest
MB beta version. Really, you *must* do this. ;-)

Again, this must ly in the eye of the beholder. I'm running v3.0.1.33
on a production machine and v3.5.current on a test environment.
_Every_ version after v3.0.1.33 I've tried is worse on IMAP than this
one.

So as the exact opposite of your advice I'd suggest a downgrade
instead of the upgrade. I'm using the two versions almost next to each
other so I can very easily see the differences. My hope is in what Val
recently said about the redesign of IMAP from the ground - to me it
would already be a success getting v3.5.x as stable as v3.0.1.33.

I agree. It's sort of misleading to the user, unless the user is savvy.

A message like this would be:

'An error occurred while reading the cached message base for the mailbox
'mailbox name'. To attempt a repair, press cancel and after
disconnecting from the server, use the repair option in the folder
maintenance. To delete the cached base, then press the 'delete cache'
button.

After the cache is deleted, TB! will fetch the whole message
information from the server and everything should be back to normal.

It's the TBB file so that's the file that contains message bodies. The
message list index seems ok. So it will be cached copies of the
retrieved message bodies that would be lost.

Nevertheless, please *do* thinking about to update to the newest
version. IMAP has made big efforts since the version you're using and
you probably would be sad having not updated earlier.

I agree with this. I'm a FastMail user too and find these latter
versions useful with this IMAP service.

Bonjour Martin,

MS Hi list and Ritlabs

MS I worries me that it seems that TheBat came to a stage where it is
MS difficult to find bugs and hard to fix them. Old and very old bugs
MS are still present and any new version which claims to fix some bugs
MS has new ones - things which worked before are suddenly broken...

't might become difficult to browse through so many code lines...

In order to repair one bug introduced in 3.5.32, Ritlab came today
with 3.5.33... with a 500 Kb bigger exe-file!!! thebat.exe is now
weighting almost 12 Mb. Compare with a three month old version...

[OT] Re: It worries me...

2005-06-29 Thread Natasha V Pearce
Hi Francis

MS I worries me that it seems that TheBat came to a stage where it is
MS difficult to find bugs and hard to fix them. Old and very old bugs are
MS still present and any new version which claims to fix some bugs has new
MS ones - things which worked before are suddenly broken...

FS 't might become difficult to browse through so many code lines...

FS In order to repair one bug introduced in 3.5.32, Ritlab came today with
FS 3.5.33... with a 500 Kb bigger exe-file!!! thebat.exe is now weighting
FS almost 12 Mb. Compare with a three month old version...

Not wishing to put words into any RL (or any other) keyboards here. This is just
a general observation.

Many new features are being added at the moment. Often at this stage in a
program's development cycle things can get a little complicated. But those
growing pains tend to be followed by good consolidation and a stronger, sleeker
program at the end of the process.

It's a little like a bird emerging from its egg for the first time. When it was
an egg, all it had to concern itself with was keeping its yoke together and
whether the speckles on its shell were lookin' good today. But then, as it
grows, it gets a whole set of new stuff it needs to worry about: What should I
do with these enormous feet things?; Won't all this beak business just get in
the way?; What if I'm alergic to feathers?. The list, believe me, is endless!

And in the end, of course, the beak does get in the way and the cool-lookin'
shell gets broken and the feathers don't even work properly at first. And then
the bird trips over those enormous feet things and quite possibly falls right
out of its comfort zone - I mean nest. Now, what kinda smart design is that?

Well, I guess that'd be the kinda smart design where those feet things grow and
develop and become strong enough to power that swan across the largest lake it
can find and where the feathers turn out to be really snug in winter, cool in
summer and even more cool when you get bored with swimming and fancy a spot of
flying - not to mention, of course, prettier than a very pretty thing.

And the beak? Well, I think the beak speaks for itself. :)

I like the cute metaphor (well a long periphrasis actually) :-)

... But I hope that the nice little bird won't become an ugly ostrich or a
Windows-like vulture...

The point is that the continuous addition of fancy features appears
actually to prevent Ritlabs from eradicating prehistorical bugs or
brand new ones like the source viewer display problem
(https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4813), which obliges me to use
the 3.5.25 version instead of the actual 3.5.33.

Searching a faceplate for a Fujitsu MO drive MCG3064AP

Dear Fujitsu support team,

I have discovered 2 unused Fujistu MO drives (MCG3064AP) in our local
storage. Unlucky they are missing the faceplate. I'm now trying to get a
replacement faceplate for two of those drives. I allready contacted the
german Fujitsu support, but they hat no proper faceplates at their hands.
Perhaps you are able to help me with that little issue.

Just go here:
http://cgi.silverstones.com/library.php#private+messages

Put that in your folder template and change the 'THE LIST POST
ADDRESS' to the list address for that folder.

But, the better way is to just use an addressbook template.

1. Create a new contact called 'TB Lists'
2. Put the below addresses in the e-mail address area
   tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com
   tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com
   tbdev@thebat.dutaint.com
   tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com

4. Remove the folder level templates.
5. You're done.

2005-06-29 Thread Lars Sölter

In theory the folder templates are really great. But while implementing they
missed two importan points.

1. Defining a deault context when an email address is supplied through an
external source. Or ask in that case for the context to use.

2. When creating a new email by double-clicking on an email address in an email
within The Bat!, the context in which the source email resides should be used.

You'd better to find out which IMAP mailbox it is and in
disconnected state repair it through folder maintenance. Or you could
use 'Clear cache' button.

How do I find out which mailbox it is? And how do I get it to
disconnect (especially with all the popup messages)?

By the way, it's not a single mailbox. After I posted, I tried to
exit TB and started getting error messages for another mailbox.
When this happens, it's almost impossible to exit TB.

KR Can someone tell me the best way to deal with this? Since this is
KR IMAP, can I just delete the TBB file and let TB rebuild it?

Yes, it is another way, but you should delete both TBB and TBI
files (the way 'Clear cache' button works)

Thanks. That might be the easiest way.

I'm glad to hear that. I would REALLY like to be able to use The

I fully agree. The true purpose of what it is supposed to be capable of has
been forgotten in favour of smileys, rogue faces, pretty little icons,
Birthday reminders, notepads, themes, html, etc. The list of non essential
bloat is getting longer.

The fact it's supposed to be able to send and receive email seems to have
been totally forgotten. And what really P's me off is, if you send a bug
report about it's inability to collect and display email you get totally
ignored. Send in a spelling mistake or missing icon and either Max or 9val
reply straight away the very next post with We'll fix that right now...
Which fully corroborates your statement above.

All I want is a decent client that handles email *properly* and has good
filters. TB has good filters but it's now a really crap unusable email
client, at least for IMAP users it is.

I don't think that follows. They said they were adding unicode support, and
that it involves some changes in program architecture. It is to be
expected that

the program would become unstable until it all gets integrated again, and it
has. TB has started disappearing from my screen without warning, getting
tangled up and sending the same message over and over. I sure hope they
get it back to where it was in a few weeks.

Unicode support is necessary for languages like Chinese that have more than
255 possible characters.

Re: 3.5.31 folder maintenance

2005-06-29 Thread MAU
Hello Charlene,

It's not a bug. You must have a folder (any) selected. Maintenance is in
 _Folder_ menu, isn't it?
So why can I run the whole bunch of folders to clean when just one is
selected? I can anyway do clean up _all_ later on. One click on
maintenance shows that all are marked to be cleaned. Makes no sense. I
can see no reason why I should have marked one to be allowed to enter
menu just to see that I can have it all one click later.

You may be right. Maybe I should not have said It's not a bug but that
I would have never considered this behaviour as a bug. What I mean is
that, for options that I use only once or twice a day, I don't care at
all if selecting the option is 1, 2 or 3 clicks away as long as I can
access it and it works.

We've seen a lot of releases where strange odd things are broken, and
it seems that a lot of unit tests usually done by the developer are
either skipped or somehow successful where for so many of us it fails.

Im losing faith in TB, when my friend who lurks here told me of it, I

first arrived Ive needed nothing new, but, I upgraded, I regret
upgrading as things I used, no longer do, and more things Im not after

As a developer I do know how hard it is to write something to suit
everyone, however, if you broke something that used to work, rather
than add new stuff, its much better for the confidence of your
userbase to fix the broke stuff, before adding new. We all understand

I did not want to add to this already rather thick soup, but... my
fingers itched :-)

There is a detail here that we must not forget. RL indicated that they
were doing a major code re-write (which sounds very much like a
re-design: you only re-write major parts of your product if you decide
you reached a limit, and a re-design is warranted).

Usually, when a product reaches a milestone -- like a new version,
re-design, whatever -- you branch on your source management tool. This
means you create a new subtree, separate from the currently-available
source code base. At this point in time work will then go on two
radically different fronts: maintenance and support on the production
(soon to be old) source code base, and development action on the new
source code branch.

As such, issues that have been discovered on the current support version
*may* *not* be seen on the development version. Even more, if the
development process gets to re-write major portions of the code, then
the issue found on production code may not even be reproducible on
development code.

Also, usually development is left alone until a point in time when new
(since the code branch) product issues are verified against the
development, and the code bases are then synchronised. Obviously, as I
pointed out earlier, sometimes you just cannot do it. And, of course,
there are those that say development people live in a different world...
having been on both sides of the fence (development and support), I have
to say I agree with it.

Also, every product issue is given a priority, and high-priority issues
are worked on first. One way to give an issue higher priority is by
showing the issue impacts negatively a large portion of the customer
base. Issues that do not impact many customers, or that do not cause
catastrophic failure of the product are, by consequence, left for later
work. Take your own conclusions on how you can influence, folks.

I am not saying, or even implying, this is what RL did, or does. I am
just pointing out how this usually works on large development shops. I
personally guess this is the *only* way this type of work can be done,
in general...

This is a confirmation of what's been reported by Vili and others: I
can't send a message, either. It remains in the Outbox forever as it
seems. I can send a message with a different account where I simply
entered our Exchange server as smtp server, so it must be a problem
 with the MAPI communication.
Seems to be sorted in .33 - I could send a message with that version
today.

Not at me. As at Zygmunt: MAPI connection, same error message as
with v31.

non-existent. Well, precluding this list ;-)

As a developer I do know how hard it is to write something to suit
everyone, however, if you broke something that used to work, rather
than add new stuff, its much better for the confidence of your
userbase to fix the broke stuff, before adding new. We all understand
breakages, stuff happens, but when it remains broken, and ignored..
quite often people report bugs because they used that feature, and
 now their usage is hampered.

Another concern of mine is the actual development strategy. Now, I
know agile and XP methods are the new fad in development and are not
suitable for everything, but it would benefit RL to adopt some of
these practices. For example, saying the next beta series is going to
address IMAP is unreasonable. IMAP is a big component and it's
currently broken in a lot of ways. If instead RL broke things down
into user stories, e.g., The user clicks the delete button and the
message is removed immediately and worked on getting some of those
accomplished in short, iterative cycles, they'd probably see much
better results. As it is, when we see things such as IMAP fixes, the
fixes are so disjoint from one another that it's not even clear what
the focus was.

Now, feel free to replace IMAP with any particular feature you'd like
to see working.

The grapes are growing in that region, yes. That region once was under
English governance, which had an indelible influence on the language. It
was at the time of the Maid of Orleans (Jeanne d'Arc) when all started.

That's unfortunate. The customer should always formulate the path.
Engineers operate in a closed world. I've run into it many times
myself, so this isn't an RL-specific thing. Engineers will spend
loads of time developing features that users don't want and never will
use, while ignoring things that users actually want.

There should be constant communication between the customer and the
developer. The customer should say this is what we want and the
developer should say okay, this is how long it will take to get there
by taking such and such steps.

As for beta testing, it's getting a bit old without any real
regression testing going on. Every other beta, old fixed bugs creep
back in, so we just end up reporting the same thing over and over
again.

1.
could it be that the .33 version is not deleting postings on the
server after picking up the newest ones?

I have the option delete post after downloading it for all my pop3
accounts activated. But i noticed when getting new postings that i get
something like:
15 posts on server 5 new - and then only 5 posts are downloaded.
Looking at the pop3 account via webmail shows all old posts still
there.

2.
Template are not being used?
I have set up a template for new messages for my TB folder in order to
easily post here. But when clicking on my TB folder and then choosing
new message it does not use this!!

anybody confirm?

hhed new message it does not use this!!

SH That'd be a new feature. I've often wanted to do the same thing except
SH to mark as read rather than delete.

I'd second that... no wait third that i guess.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Stunt man Lucky Hinterman died while attempting to
go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Brother and equipment manager Brent
Hinterman took full responsibility for the tragedy. I was in charge
of getting the barrel all cushioned and reinforced. But my son had a
soccer game, and in my book, family comes first. When asked if he
considered his brother to be a member of the family, Brent said,
Well, I suppose that's one way to look at it.attachment: invalid.jpg

hhed could it be that the .33 version is not deleting postings on the

hhed I have the option delete post after downloading it for all my pop3
hhed accounts activated. But i noticed when getting new postings that i get
hhed something like:
hhed 15 posts on server 5 new - and then only 5 posts are downloaded.
hhed Looking at the pop3 account via webmail shows all old posts still
hhed there.

I don't know about the current version, but I just downloaded (on a
second computer) about 25 messages that should have been deleted from
the server when they were read on another machine. Oddly enough most
of these messages were from Maxim, but not all. It may also have
something to do with messages that do not seem to filter into the bat
folder when I initially download them. It may be that these messages
are not filtered nor marked for deletion.

What if you hold the shift key down while selecting the first and last
messages you want to delete and then select delete.
