Most of your post has been responded to. I think there are few things to keep in mind. 1. Mulberry isn't toast. At least, not yet. It is still a very robust IMAP client. Until such time that new functionality (e.g. security) renders it useless, it will continued to be utilized by many, including myself. 2. Unlike Mulberry that was built from the ground-up with IMAP in mind, TB added IMAP functionality to what basically was and has been a POP client. Consequently, the IMAP functionality of TB has always been less than robust (I am trying to be nice), IMO. Whether this continues, remains to be seen although I have been waiting for over 2 years for a reliable and speedy client from them. Right now, what you see is what you get. But why do ALL other IMAP clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Mulberry, and even Outlook!) have almost zero problems with at least the basic operations, such as retrieving mail, browsing folders, etc? Same problem here. Frozen IMAP connections. BTW, IMAP IS NOT hard stuff. The RFC is clear and concise and that is the reason clients such as Thunderbird and Mulberry (and even Outlook) are pretty flawless at implementation. That is how it has been for the last 10 minutes (another issue is I cannot delete the SetFlag request which I've no idea what it is doing, but that's another post). Notice the multiple items in the queue. It'd appear that TB hands out items to be queued to each connection, and then each connection processes its own queue. This can lead to issues like I have in my situation now where I have several items queued on one connection, and the other 3 connections sitting idle. I have the exact same problem here. To my surprise, it appears to be significantly more robust that any previous release with IMAP. My configuration consists of TB connected to our MDaemon mail server via 1GB Ethernet (no bandwidth issues). I can offer the following replies. - I avoid working with large mailboxes, i.e., no more than 4000 messages per mailbox. This may be even less if I end up having say 5 or more folders with a large amount of messages. Totally agree. TB seems to lose its mind with large mailboxes and freezes. - I currently don't subscribe to my junk mail or other mailboxes that I check infrequently. I check those via webmail. I do this because they interfere with smooth reading of unread mail while jumping from mailbox to mailbox automatically. I wish I could be subscribed to a mailbox but not have its counts updated unless I explicitly request it. Totally agree - I don't use a server side Outbox. It's just troublesome and often leads to multiple messages being sent and multiple messages being in the outbox when using the intermittent save option while composing. I do and have not had any problems with the latest TB build and have never had multiple messages being sent - I don't filter much with TB! I filter when MDaemon doesn't provide what I need. I have not had any filtering problems with the latest build. - I avoid opening large attachments in my lower bandwidth environment. I save them for when I get home. I may get multiple attachments in a single message, with a few being appropriate for viewing in a low bandwidth setting. However, TB! is all or none with attachment retrieval. Can't comment. I have a very fast connection so this is a non issue with me - I don't use any of the synchronise settings for any of my mailboxes. I disable synchronization for all mailboxes. Agreed - I no longer use the ticker. I may revisit this since I haven't tried it in a long time. I use it. It works fine - I don't manage my mailboxes using TB!. I do it server side, i.e., mailbox creations and deletions or making a folder a sub-folder or another. LOL. I certainly agree with this one. So with all these 'workarounds'/avoiding or steering clear of behaviours may be creating an impression of tranquility. However, it's artificial in that I really shouldn't have to be avoiding features. No you shouldn't but you have some challenges with bandwidth on occassion that might certainly manage your system so that it suits your purposes However, with all that, I still somewhat prefer what it's doing now to Mulberry. I'm getting hooked again on the templates and MicroEd so I may be getting swooned into tolerating some 'gyrations' to get things working Ok. :) I like the new version of Mulberry but I too am hooked on TB's templates and other features. At least leave a version 2 that will not drive the IMAP user crazy while trying to simply read their mail. Exporting/Importing IMAP messages problem
Hi Everyone: I need verification that our problem is indeed a problem with TB. We have an IMAP mailserver on our internal LAN. We had a user that attempted to use the TB Tools/Export Messages and Tools/Import Messages with rather interesting results. WARNING: If you are going to try this, use messages you do not care if you lose (perhaps forever). Our user went to an IMAP folder and selected several messages. He then exported these messages using the Tools/Export Messages function to a local directory. He then deleted the messages from the IMAP folder (marked for deletion and then expunged). He then changed his mind and decided to import the same messages that were exported earlier. He highlighted the folder and then executed the Tools/Import Messages folder, highlighted the messages he wanted imported from the local directory and did the import. The new imported messages showed up in the IMAP directory for about 5 seconds and then disappeared. When I looked at Browse deleted messages in the appropriate folder, I found all the messages that were imported. I tried to undelete and nothing happened. They remained marked for deletion. Interestingly enough, even after a sync, these messages were not physically present on the IMAP server which among other things means the data contained in the Browse deleted messages view is somewhat suspect as it appears as though it does not coincide with the IMAP message store on the server. One of two things happened. More times than not but not all the time, the message transport fails. That is to say the connection with the server apparently hangs and not all messages in all folders can be viewed without a complete restart of TB. I'm pretty sure that we have not tried this operation hasn't been tried before 2.12.04 so I don't know if it is a problem with this release or not. We have successfully replicated this problem on three systems with the same results. Again, if you are going to try this, use a message or messages that you don't care of ever seeing again. Re: Some questions
Hi Allie Martin - On Sun, 11 Jul 2004, at 16:27:02 [GMT -0500] (which was 2:27 PM where I live) you wrote: Removing messages marked for deletion in an IMAP folder is expunging or in TB! *compressing*. Even for a POP account, deleting a message in TB! just marks it for deletion and removes it from the message list. A compression has to be done there as well to actually remove the messages from the message base. Purging is different and involves more than just compression. Purging can be made to remove messages older than a defined age or to remove old messages until the total message count is at a defined value. I see that there are no purge options for IMAP and wonder if compression and purging do the same for an IMAP folder in TB!. Upon reviewing the folder options anyway, I see that there's no purge only option and instead purge+compress. I know we are talking about the same thing here and semantics are getting in the way. Speaking to IMAP only, convention defines the act of deletion as flagging a message for deletion on the server. The message still physically exists on the server but it has a flag attribute. Purging is the act of physically deleting the flagged message from the server (one can define server-side rules for this action. TB uses the term compress to refer to this physical deletion on the server which is actually an incorrect term to use. The term Compress typically refers to the recovery of disk space that is fragmented. IMO, the command TB should be using is delete+purge rather than purge+compress. -- Best Regards, Kevin Using The Bat! v2.12 RC/3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 pgpHqEajg1pYx.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is v2.12 RC/1 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

So does it happens on every folder? How often it happens? Does it happen only after new message appearing? BTW, you can delete test account, thanks. Here are my observations: 1. I have Account/Properties/Options/Mark Message as read when it is being read for 2 seconds (I mention this because it may make a difference) set. 2. Yes, it happens on every folder (all IMAP) every time there is a new message and I have focus in that folder. I bring up point #1 because if I change the Mark Message as read when it is being read [for 2 seconds] to Mark Message as read only when it is open in a separate window I get a totally different indication. That being when a new message is received, the message list pane and the message pane (below) refresh very slowly, the panes go blank for a split second and then refresh and return where I was before. Either way, it is annoying and inconvenient. I did not have this problem with Beta/1 BTW. With that release, the message list pane refreshed but the message pane remained static. I hope this makes sense. It is a little difficult to articulate. BTW, thanks for testing and getting the trash delete to work. If you need access again, just let me know. It just now happened again with Mark Message as read only when it is open in a separate window so this apparently isn't the cause. A new message comes in (to an IMAP folder), the highlight in the message list window goes to the top of the list and the message pane shows No Message Loaded. -- Best Regards, Kevin Using The Bat! v2.12 RC/1 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 pgpeMxIniAj5j.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is v2.12 RC/1 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

IMAP: Drafts in Outbox?
To All: After playing around with TB for several weeks, I would like to offer the following observation. In all the server-side IMAP mail systems I have worked on, when an IMAP user account is created, certain IMAP folders are created automatically. These are the obvious sent and trash folders but also a draft folder. I have not reviewed the RFC specification for IMAP in a long time so I don't know if this is part of the standard or merely convention. However, it seem counter-intuitive that draft messages should be saved in the outbox (rather than the IMAP draft folder) without at least providing an option for a redirect (much like what can be done in Account Properties/Mail Management/Pre-defined folders). In my opinion, this is just one thing that makes it very difficult to roll-out a product like TB in a corporate setting. All of our users are used to saving drafts in IMAP draft folders and are not expecting to see drafts in the outbox. Again, by convention, when our users see messages in the outbox, they think something is wrong (failure to connect to server, software problem, etc.). Is there any way to have drafts go to the IMAP draft folder by default? -- Best Regards, Kevin Using The Bat! v2.12 Beta/1 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current beta is 2.12 Beta/1 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

IMAP Problems
Hello Everyone: First the good news. The Bat v2.12 Beta/1 is far superior to v2.11.02 with regards to handling IMAP. However, we still exhibit problems with: 1. Blank message content screens. No matter what we do (refresh folders, re-synchronize, re-boot, etc.) some message screens are blank. We have found that if we move a message from one IMAP folder to another and then move it back, the content appears. (not a problem from Outlook) 2. We still get the dreaded no message loaded indication with messages in IMAP folders. This only seems to go away when the client is restarted (unacceptable). (not a problem from outlook) 3. The Bat does not empty and IMAP trash folder on exit. We have the IMAP trash folder defined in Account/Properties/Mail Management, In Account/Properties/Options the check box Empty Trash Folder on Exit is checked. A bit more work needs to be done on the IMAP component, IMO. It certainly is not yet sufficiently reliable for production use. -- Best Regards, Kevin Using The Bat! v2.12 Beta/1 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 MDaemon v7.0.1 Current beta is 2.12 Beta/1 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/
