But why was this changed? And will it be fixed (put back to the way it has

1.63 Beta/6 Scheduler: Some Thoughts

2003-02-07 Thread Kevin J. Menard, Jr.
Hey guys,

Here are some thoughts I have on the new scheduler. First, I think
this is a great feature, something I've been longing for for quite
some time, and something that would help me sell my Outlook using
friends on the bat! just a little bit more (getting IMAP to work
would be the final clincher ;-)).

Anyway, here is a list of criticisms (good and bad):

o SmartBat and Scheduler on the same pane, why not have a single
menu item? Presumably any future add-ons could go in this pane, so
why keep creating new menu items for it?

o Make these items optionally installable, so those concerned about
bloatware, or who simply don't use these options won't need to have
  them.

o Have a button or something for adding a task. It's a bit awkward
to have to right-click or press the Ins key.

o Choosing This Week - Important whites out the current week on
  the calendar on my system.

o Allow the tasks to be viewed by time of day (a la Outlook and
  other PIMs)

o What do the copy and paste keys do? What does it even to copy and
paste something like that (if a recurring option is already
  available)?

o Make it so when you double-click on a task, it brings up the
  properties window.

o Make it so you can minimize within the bat! -- it's kind of a pain
to have to keep reopening it if you're switching between reading
messages and the scheduler (or perhaps add a transparency option or
  something).

o I like the actions methods that can be performed when an event
  occurs.

o Very good effort. I'm quite happy with it thus far, even it
doesn't seem like it. I'd be interested in hearing what other
  people's feelings about it.

I have had a problem with hidden text in HTML messages before. This
might be a poor example, but you can generate the problem yourself by
forwarding an HTML message to yourself and not removing the
message.htm attachment. Type some text at the top. Send it. Now go
back and look at the message in HTML format and your text will not be
seen. If you switch over to text mode you can see your text. I have

I won't ask where you got that statistic, but even if it were correct to
within 1%, it still doesn't change the fact that a disproportionate
amount of the _money_ spent on Internet software comes from that 15%
:) Stop looking at access in terms of geography and look at the pool of
people already online. The majority of the net's most hard-core users
come from that 15%.

Target the source of the money. Simple HTML in TB in no way will affect
your usage of the program. Why would you give up on TB if you started
receiving more HTML mail? What has this ecent addition to the program
got to do with how much HTML mail you'll receive? Are you telling me
that the majority of mail you receive comes from other Bat users? Even
if so, those users are the most likely to not start using HTML. If on
the other hand, the majority of mail comes from users of Outlook, Outlook
Express and other HTML mailers... Then I suggest that nothing will
change.

I don't plan on using HTML, but there are plenty of other things I can
tell people to cut down on bandwidth. First is your sig. Which takes up
enough bytes to cover a number of HTML tags (it's obscenely long and
quite ironic when trying to champion against HTML mail). How often do
you use it? How about mailers that create enormous numbers of X-
headers? How about the elimination of useless text? Teaching people to
better express their thoughts. Maybe you can look into receiving your
mail pre-compressed in binary form. One quick download and the process
offline.

HTML mail may go away. But its replacement is going to be an even
richer multimedia alternative. I'm just playing devil's advocate here I
suppose. But at the same time I know a little bit about market trends
and what sells certain types of products. I've also been through quite
a number of mail pckages in the past few weeks doing research. :)
