Slower than 5 seconds or slower 1 minute 40 seconds in your case? I am
quite sure it is IMAP related, since excluding the search in my single
IMAP account increases speed and especially the reaction on "stop"
command enormously. My IMAP account has only a few text mails, I use it
mainly for testing TB, I can't imagine that it is the size that matters
here, plowing through such a tiny folder shouldn't slow down TB. Yet it
does.

It is IMAP related. I did another search through all mails except my

I installed it as a beta tester on both my machines. No problems up to
now with or without OTFE, but this is not what you want to hear, I
know.

This coming weekend I may have the opportunity to test this RC on my
girlfriend's notebook. I upgraded her home version from 3.0.? to
3.71.03 only recently. It is an old and slow notebook, running
Win98SE, but she has agreed to letting me try, so I will. You may
guess that she isn't exactly an email freak... ;-)

I'll post the outcome here.

Mary, I didn't mean to suggest you were making demands on my time. I
meant to convey why I hadn't waited a long time before I decided it
wasn't doing what it should. I guess I'm expressing myself about as
well as when I tried to suggest to Mica the other day that even native
English speakers may know some big words.

Anyhow, I ran the same search, and stopped it, then went to an unread
message and waited for it to load (IMAP). Instead of instant response
I waited 1 minute 40 seconds for it to appear, which I assume was the
time it took for the stop to happen. My search was on text in an IMAP
folder (only one IMAP folder) which contained about 2600 messages.

I have to admit to a certain impatience. I don't know if I here for
two or three minutes before I assumed that it was time to exit. There
were at least tens of messages in this folder alone to plow through.

When I have a little time instead of phones and intercoms chirping and
incoming messages causing my computer to ding and people sticking
their heads in my office I'll try it again, and make sure I give it
about 150 seconds before I decide it's not working.

On the special menu I had moved the 'Mark as Junk' up to the top so that I
could use the following key combo to mark junk.

Alt+s enter

The 'Mark as Junk' has now moved to under the first bar.

Indeed and exactly! Stop is stop--and whatever is keeping it from
happening immediately needs to be fixed.

It's up to the development team, now.

Whenever the search "hangs" TB seems to be kind of blind: I have no idea
where TB is looking at this moment, usually I see the folder names that were
processed and returned positive results. I think things could be a

Well done!

Sorry I wasn't timely in answering your earlier message. I was running
another test on all folders (about 178,000 messages) to see if I could
duplicate the problem. But I could not. Stop button still worked
immediately for me.

I suspect either OTFE or IMAP or both as being the source of the
problem.

Might as well. But, if I were you, I would emphasize the main
points--the possibility that OTFE is part of the problem's mix and the
need, at a minimum, for a meaningful wording in the Alert and a way
that the user will be informed that the search was ended before all
messages were found, when that happens if you do not push Stop.

I don't use OTFE. But I do have some encrypted messages in my folders,
and those are searched as rapidly as any of the others.

I just ran a further test, "beta" in text, with all folders selected.
I pushed stop after about 60 seconds, and the search stopped
immediately.

Dwight confirmed your problem in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and he uses IMAP, so perhaps it's IMAP-related. You might also mention
that.

You're right. If I set the process priority on "low" TB still doesn't
react faster. I wondered how I could figure out if the search was
terminated the regular way or the forced one, since there is no such
hint. All I get is a message saying "1 messages found". But I searched
for "beta" and there should have been much more. So I suppose that the
command was delayed for some reason. Maybe because TB had to decrypt my
mails?

> It does stop before the end of the search though?
Yes I think so. The only 1 message gave me the hint.

> I suspect if the CPU load is high it's merely a delay with the 'stop'

A delay of about two minutes that ends with no message like "search
aborted on user request" is a little annoying. I think it would be
better that TB shows a hint.

When I select only some folders (tested with 3) and exclude all the rest
of my folder and account structures, I have no problem with putting the
brakes on the search. It happens if I clicked on "select all" before
starting my search.

It was fixed several betas ago but the bug reoccurred here some time
ago. I tried it with a randomly chosen word and I have selected all
folders. "Stop" doesn't stop the search immediately. The CPU load is
rather high, memory consumption went up to 44.240 kB. Nothing serious,

by the quoted words i meant that the typical crowd of this list do go through *betas*, and i just stressed that installing over a beta is not as interesting as installing over the latest GA.

hence, if you installed a release some time ago, then went through betas, they could incrementally fix some settings of your env (customizations, window/controls positions etc), which is NOT supposed to be the case of a typical non-betatester.

this is not specifically addressed to you in particular, nor it is supposed to apply in your case. consider it just a yet-another reminder of what's the point of RCs.

Previous release will be long gone for most of us. It installed flawlessly
here over the structure created by the last installer, modified by many betas.

So many useful unique functions work so well. Tabbed message index. Virtual
