Re[2]: Start minimized and new messages in Inbox bugs (was 1.54 Beta/17)

2001-12-21 Thread Rudy Willis

Hello Marck,

Similar happens to me. The Bat! shows 3 new messages in the inbox but
when I click on the inbox, the message count jumps to 8 and there are
actually 8 new ones. (of course numbers are examples and not actual
number of messages). This happens a lot, but can't pin down any
particular thing that causes it. I do not start TB minimized, so that
is not the problem.

This one is annoying indeed. Actually this is I think the same bug as
I applied on December 1 (while using Beta 14).
The bug is still there (in beta 18).
Again my bug-description (to check if this is
the same bug we're talking about):

  The bug description:

Miscellaneous problems (properly related) with starting The Bat
directly in minimised mode.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

With this new beta the following happens (my last beta was 10):

- When I startup Windows I always start the Bat automatically (via
programs/startup). I always start it minimised. My settings are set to
only display systemtray icon (so not on the taskbar).
- I have a shortcut to check all mail (ctrl+up-arrowkey). When i use
this shortcut (after the Bat has loaded and sits in the systemtray)
nothing happens. The Bat does not respond (shows no connection
centre).
- When i click on the Bat icon in the system tray, the Bat comes and
starts to load the mailfolders (counting the mails in it like it
always does). Before this beta the mailfolders where counted and
loaded while minimised, so bringing up the Bat showed the bat ready for
use. When clicking on the Bat systemtray icon, the Bat also does not
come up maximised like it was before. Closing the Bat while maximised
and reproducing above steps still shows the Bat still *not* maximised.
- When using my check-all-mail shortcut now, after the Bat has come up
and has made itself ready for use, the connections centre comes up,
but the Bat mainwindow shows itself also in the taskbar (the Bat is minimised),
so now I have two items in the taskbar related to the Bat (CC and the
Bat mainwindow). When finishing the
mailcheck, minimising The Bat shows it again in the systemtray (like
it should be). While checking mail now for the second time everything
looks ok.

I guess I can't even imagine what is about to happen. Are we talking
about releasing a version 1.54? If this is true it's crazy. 1.54 is
not yet ready for prime time!

Are you talking about releasing this as 2.0? If that is true, TheBat!
is about to self destruct.

The 1.54 Beta has great promise. I see lots of good things starting to
fall into place. BUT it still has too many incomplete additions and
rough edges. Common folders are going to be good, but right now they
are not there yet. The same is true of lots of things happening here.

People who don't like betas until they are pretty solid would do well
to move to 1.54 by now. People who resist all betas will be very
unhappy with 1.54, because it will be clear that it is really just a
beta not a perfected thing.

Don't do it. Please.

I almost never have this problem (using Win2k SP2). The only time I
see it, is if I have a (low priority) task in the background which
takes up almost all CPU time, such as compressing a DivX, and the mail
server is responding very slowly at the same time. It seems as if The
Bat is then starved for CPU, and responds quite badly to events (but
it doesn't hang up totally, however).

I'm not sure how The Bat processes WinSock events, but if it is via
the (old-fashioned) system of processing windows messages in the main
WindowProc, then this could be the problem. However, switching to a
fully asynchronous WinSock event model is not an easy task... Not to
mention incompatible with older versions of Windows.

Do other people with the "pause" problem have CPU-consuming tasks
running in the background?

Sorry, I have no understading for this policy. Should I warn the poor
folks on the German lists that the new version contains known bugs but
has been released nevertheless (if you do deicde to make this fatal
marketing mistake)? Please fix the bugs first, and then release. I can
with no good conscience recommend a buggy program. It is against all I

I wish you all good health. If the release of a new version is delayed
because of poor health, everybody will understand this, and I will be
the first one to defend you, should anybody critisise the delay. If a
buggy version is released just to keep a deadline, you will lose
customer confidence. Your competitors are not sleeping either, and

Don't take this the wrong way, but my help in this case is in warning

1.54 Beta/17

2001-12-19 Thread Stefan Tanurkov

Hi All,

New Beta is available from http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/beta.html

  The direct download URL is
  http://www.ritlabs.com/ftp/pub/the_bat/beta/tb154b17.rar

Basically, it only adds a new virus checking window for folders plus
a couple of issues is solved...

We have to release a new version in a couple of days, so please do
not blame us if there will be unfixed (long-standing) bugs in the
release version - I have a strong suspicion we will be making
post-releases soon :-) I am sorry about such a mess, but there were
some difficulties in the past several months making it tough to
develop the program intensively. Most of them were connected with
health issues, but I hope the life will get better in the next year
  :-)

Please report "hot bugs" in reply to this message and hopefully
they'll get fixed in the release. By "hot" I mean urgent and major
  ones.

Thank you for your help and understanding!

[1.42 beta/17] message list colors bug

2000-04-15 Thread Jast

> Can anyone confirm this?

I noticed a bug with this too, so I further investigated it's behaviour.

Result: The handling of the underlying data file (colors.ini in mail
 subdir) is very sloppy.

 - Color display always uses the index value in the colors.ini index
instead of the unique handle. When this index value points to a wrong
 handle, wrong colors are displayed.

 - groups deleted in color group editor aren't deleted from the file. Nor
is their index entry. Instead the index just sets a variable "count" lower
 and changes the appropriate entries.

This needs to be changed obviously. It seems that the handling of the
other ini files is similarly sloppy BTW, even if it doesn't result in such
 noticable bugs.

Side note about color group handles: Is there a reason the user has to
care about this? Unless one wanted to introduce a feature that makes it
possible to assign a color group to a message per keyboard by entering its
 handle...

Otherwise, I very much appreciate this exciting new feature! ;-)

cool, very cool :-)
I wish me a second little shortcut to appear the memo: double
click on the memo column in the specific row. Thanx.

Not for my purposes, but I may be alone in that. The "delete after XX
days" would be sufficient for me if, when I park a message in my inbox
and later move it to a sub-folder, it *retained* its parked (i.e.,
undeletable) status ... maybe that's changed recently, but last I
looked it still removed it when moving the message.

For me, if I get a message that says, say, "Respond by June 1, 2000"
or "Offer valid through May 31, 2000" I'd like to be able to assign
that specific message an expiration date. Some of my folders have the
mass deletion occur according to the current "after xx days" plan, and
some are more permanent, but I'd like to have some messages go away
after a specific date ... it's not a big thing, but it would be
helpful.

Thomas> The current date should be communicated from your Windows. The
Thomas> action could be performed like the other "delete" actions: "on

I'll have to experiment ... like I said, I'm not up on a lot of the
more advanced filtering ... it would be great if I were, considering
the volume of mail I receive, but I'm currently in the Catch-22
position of not having time to set up the rules (or experiment with
them, actually) to help me deal more efficiently with the time I *do*
have. :-)

Thanks.

That's technically possible, but what is the purpose? Aren't the
functions we have (delete messages after xx days) sufficient? Just
curious.

The current date should be communicated from your Windows. The action
could be performed like the other "delete" actions: "on exit", or by
hitting "purge&compress".

Specifying deletion date for specific messages (WAS: Re[2]: 1.42 beta 17 available)

2000-04-14 Thread Chuck Mattsen

Hmmm ... a possible way to achieve something that I've been wanting
just occurred to me (though I don't know exactly how to implement it,
and perhaps it would best wait for version 2.x ...)

With the new memo field, would it not be possible, provided one
followed a consistent system, to specify a date in the memo field on
which you wished TB! to delete the message from the message base? (As
opposed to the general deletion capabilities in place.) In other
words, I could put, say, 060100 in the message field, meaning that
that should be the deletion date.

That begs the next question, however, of how to have TB! perform the
deletion on a daily basis without manually having to go in and enter
the current date ...

Oh, heck ... I confess I don't know enough of the inner workings of
filtering and strings, etc. ... but do you see what I'm getting at?
And, if so, can you suggest a way to implement?

TIA,

Chuck

Is it probably better to place this 2 icons from the memo window on
the main TB toolbar? (Or just to create one more toolbar). Would be
great to make that memo window "plugged in" TB and not flowing as
now...

ST> [+] Message colour groups added

Works pretty buggy... :-( After a minute of playing TheBAT! doesn't
set the correct colors.

ST> [*] Ctrl+G now changes the flagged state of a message

Works only if the messages list is focused (not the body of the
message).

ST> [*] Ctrl+P in message list view should print messages

... same problem

ST> [-] Icons should be displayed in PGP key manager

?? Don't see anything. Is it probably because I don't have any key
generated?

I second this 100%. The memo column with an abbreviated part of the
memotext doesn't make real sense. The best is an icon (we should really
consider saving space) and a menu item in the local menu to open the
associated memo. Nothing more, nothing less :-)

Anyway, the enhancements of b17 are great. Big hands for the
programmers.
