TB! Error messages - access violation

2001-06-24 Thread Carren Stuart

Hello TBUDL,

Twice today I have had error messages from TB! Once when trying to
do a mailto from within another programe, and once just now when I
  tried to close TB!
The first error message I got was: access violation at address
00683B1E. Read of address . The second error message was the
same except the first lot of numbers was different - sorry, I
clicked OK before I wrote them down :-(
What do these errors mean? What do I do about them? These are the
first errors I have had from TB! and I don't like them!

No. It actually uses the account you specify, with all settings
(including From, Reply-To, Network settings, and SMTP Server).

If you just want to change From and Reply-To addresses, you can use
the macros %From= and %Reply-To= .

Is that correct? I do not use either of the above two macros. I post from

The list is actually this list, and some others.

I did thefollowing once, as people on this list reported it helped
also them:

Back up the TB subdirectories (and for good measure also the TB main
directory), and uninstall completely.

Make a fresh install, do not use any backed-up regsitry key. You will
lose a lot of settings, and you will also lose your regustration.

Type your registration into Help / Registration. I hope you kept the
mail with the alphanumeric key when you registred.

Copy the subdirectories back into the TB directory to have access to
your mailbase. Create accounts with the same names as the originals,
and TB will find the settings (POP and SMTP servers etc etc). Hit
shft-crtl-alt-L to make TB find the folders.

This worked here. The reason was a currupt registry (or registry key).

HM I did this. I backed up my accounts, uninstalled but kept the
HM Registry entries. Installed the 1.53d again. Started without any
HM other app running, it crashed. I uninstalled with the old
HM uninstaller ( 1.53d comes without any, right ? ),

1.53d was the emergency update which *added back in the uninstaller*
which had been accidentally left out of the previous 1.53 releases.

HM now with the option of deleting everything.

HM The new installation ( after importing the backup ) lasted for
HM about 10 minutes. It crashes while reading mail, while trying to
HM write a new mail, by just clicking around and changing accounts

Does the timing of the crash coincide with the Periodical mail
checking cycle? Is there some kind of weird IPC file in the TB folder?

HM I really don't know what to do.

HM I've tried to narrow the cause but what now ?

I don't think (from what you're saying) that you *deleted* the old
data. One of my contentions was that it was the data that was
corrupted and was causing TB to crash. Try a *completely* virgin
install with no pre-configuration and no old messages. The backup was
to ensure that your data remained safe in case it's nothing to do with
the data and that you can get it back after trying. Perhaps importing
the data from backup rather than using corrupt data files will cure
the problem.

HM _And_ I'm having the problem with registering the new installation
HM because the Pasword key wouldn't be accepted. I've used the info
HM I've got from the Ritlabs when registering/paying for my
HM educational copy - Wed, 26 Jan 2000 04:46:43 GMT.

I don't know about why this would be. If you have a backup / copy of
the registry data, you may be able to restore the registration key
from there.

HM Thanks very much for any further help with this :-)

HM BTW, could somebody send me ( or link me to ) some earlier version, like the

Peter Palmreuther wrote to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and made these
points:

MDP We have deliberately removed this from TBTECH and TBBETA, but it is
MDP still supposed to be on TBUDL

PP It's gone from TBUDL too, only the Archive, Moderators, etc. lines are
PP present.

Correct.

PP BTW: wasn't it the You're subscribed was removed (at least in
PP one reason) for not corrupting S/MIME signs?

Yes.

PP Well, the above mentioned lines to the same :-(

No, they don't. The footer lines go outside the main message envelope
and do not corrupt S/MIME signatures. The message digest of an S/MIME
signed message remains intact. In the case of TBUDL, *no* attachments
are permitted anyway - they are stripped by the server. Thus any
S/MIME signatures are removed and can't be used on TBUDL.

PP So is it possible to add that lines as X-Headers to the mail?

They used to be but until TB add mailing list header support, they
can't be seen without using F9 or Ctrl-Shift-K. The footers need to be
seen (as moderators / administrators we already get plenty of how do
you unsubscribe - if we lost the instructions from the footer it
would be much worse, and we'd get such messages on the list).

PP Sorry I'm going OT, but maybe I'm the only one not getting the
PP You're subscribed line on TBUDL :-)

No, we've all lost it. I know that because Syafril has told me that
the routing server is preventing it from being added.

The problem occurs when the message is resent from the server to the
list members. The To header is changed and the real name is stripped
from it. This is different to how it used to work.

OK, now I understand, when I get your message, you are in the FROM
header. When I now hit Reply, your name is chosen from this field
(FROM) and inserted into the TO header, so my template can use it.

But, since the sender's name nonetheless reaches me and can be used,
where exactly is the problem with it disappearing on the server? Or
may I don't understand it, because I tend to read all messages, not

When I read your message I saw who wrote it (you), but not to whose

because a mailing list is inherently public (well, closed public to be
precise). So everybody is addressed by a message, as you make clear
through your template, which uses even for replies the addressing
Hello Listers. Mine on the other hand uses the original senders
first name, so everybody can identify to whose mail my answer is
written. Which is actually often wrong since I sometimes reply to a
posting deep in a thread even if I answer the original question - comes
from the old Usenet habit to read all postings before making a fool of

In that, where people don't use detailed attribution (like I have

initial quoting, there's no other way of seeing to whom they are
replying.

For instance, look at your message (to which this is a reply). The
only way an onlooker can see that it is a reply to me is that you have
said Hello Marck at the top. The 'To' real name munging that many
of us like to engage in has a real point when an answer is *to* an
individual within a public list.

As you pointed out to Peter, his replies have even less attribution
:-).

Re[2]: Disappearing 'Cool hints'

2001-06-24 Thread JOANNE VIRANT

Hello Melissa,
I have never used them, but have turned them on to test, and
 it is working ok.
I am frustrated about the address book, tho.

MR I don't use them, but I just checked, and they're still working here using
MR v1.53d (upgraded from 1.52f/1.53/1.53bis/1.53bis the sequel).

Re: Address book

2001-06-24 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hello JOANNE,

Historians believe that Sun, 24 Jun 2001 at 11:00 GMT -0700 was when,
JOANNE VIRANT [JV] typed the following:

JV I just upgraded to BAT1.53, and now when I compose, then try to
JV access the address book for multiple entries, it is empty.

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but when you are in the Address
picker, are you sure it is your main address book showing? The way to
check is, there is a drop-down list near the top-left corner of the
picker.

JV I can
JV access my original address book several different ways,

You do have entries in your address book, correct? If so, what do you
mean when you say you can access your address book? Can you go
through one of the ways you *can* access your address book?

JV The auto-complete only inserts 1 addesss, not
JV multiple.

Could you explain this one a little more please?

Re[2]: Address book

2001-06-24 Thread JOANNE VIRANT

Hello Januk,
yes. i only have one address book. when i get to the
  newer version's address selector page...where I
would normally just highlight names I chose, there
are no names there. I right click, I left click, on
everything I see...the header on the address book is
left blank. I see no options to IMPORT or EXPORT my
  address book.

OK, I CREATE NEW MESSAGE. Where it says TO, at the
right are 3 little options. The 1st is a VIEW
HISTORY LIST. I can start an email from there. The
2nd ia a blue arrow and says 'add to address book. Add what? If I
right
click, I get the list, but can only select one name
at a time, what a hassle. The 3rd brings up an empty
  address book.

Yet I can open my address book from 3 or 4 other
places, and all the names are in there, just where I
  put them.

  Thank you for helping.
