I know this is OT, but there's a wealth of knowledge on this list: I'm seeing strange incoming email for about 3 weeks now, at the rate of one every 3 or 4 days; the [From] header usually includes 4 numbers + my user name, the return address includes my email address, the message is addressed to my email account, and the subject header includes what appears to be Japanese or Chinese characters and English text. The message also appears to have been sent from a hinet.net server. The A message also appears to have been sent from a hinet.net server. hinet.net is really hinet.net.tw which is from Taiwan. The 4 numbers, plus your return address, ... well, it is probably spam to begin with. A The oddest part is that the email contains the text of a just received A message... yet when you re-read it the text changes to the text of ANOTHER A message in the same folder. It is probably from a spam program which is not RFC 2821(SMTP) or RFC 1652 (8-bit MIMEtransport) compliant, and your ISP's SMTP does not recognize it and mangles it during receipt, as they (ISP) may not have an 8-bit clean extended character MTA. It could also contain java script which is not a good thing.. Personally I would filter it to go to the bit bucket (trash), so you never see it, using something like reg ex on kludges using ^.*@hinet.net*, or something more exotic such as (^(To|Cc|From):.*@hinet.net*) I filter this junk from DNS and my MTA before it hits my box. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Try to relax and enjoy the crisis. Re: OT: Strange emails
Hi Thomas, On Saturday, October 5, 2002, 12:39 PM, you mentioned about OT: Strange emails: T It is the biggest ISP in Taiwan, and it is hinet.net (.net as the TLD, T without .tw). www.hinet.net They used to be my main ISP when I lived in T Taiwan, so the recommendation to filter out everything from them is not T a good idea, if another user in Taiwan joins this list. True, this is subjective depending on where you live, and what mail you are accustomed to receiving. I don't know the full capabilities of using reg ex in TB!, but I do know them in Unix/Linux... It would be interesting to see if TB! would filter on the IP address of the sender, or a block of addresses. That would work, providing that remains constant from a few emails that Art was receiving. That way, hinet.net could be left intact. G The 4 numbers, plus your return address, ... well, it is probably G spam to begin with. T ACK. A The oddest part is that the email contains the text of a just received A message... yet when you re-read it the text changes to the text of ANOTHER A message in the same folder. G It is probably from a spam program which is not RFC 2821(SMTP) or RFC 1652 G (8-bit MIMEtransport) compliant, and your ISP's SMTP does not recognize it G and mangles it during receipt, T I would like to see that. Once a message is in the TB folder, it T cannot be mangled any more. Of course, I was referring to the ISP's MTA, whether it be Sendmail, Postfix, qmail, or 100s of others.. Once the mail is received and stored by the ISP, and is pop'd or IMAP'd mail into TB!, it can be already mangled from the ISP's MTA. The above 3 MTAs are fully compliant, but I have seen this many times with non-compliant MTAs. G as they (ISP) may not have an 8-bit clean extended character MTA. G It could also contain java script which is not a good thing.. T But the script wouldn't execute under TB. Of course. The damage was initially done from the MTA either from hinet.net on sending, or from Art's ISP in receiving, or the spammer's software itself. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. In many mailers, if the headers are really fouled up, the message contents will not read correctly, or partially, and demonstrate symptoms as you described. I don't know specifically if this is true with TB! It is just a logical possibility, as I have seen this happen many times (not with TB!). You can view the headers in TB! by hitting Ctl+Shift K. TB! for my Mum - several questions
After recently cleaning out all the viruses from my mother's computer, I've decided it's time she changed from Outlook Express to TB! I've set up her account in TB!, and set up AVG. I'm now trying to anticipate her problems in adjusting. She can just manage to use Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Word. Anything else is too hard (I'm still not sure if she's understood how to use folders yet). 1. I know lots of people have problems with the editor when they first use it. What options should I have turned on? For my own use, I normally have Autoformat off and Autowrap on. My feeling is it's probably better to have Autoformat on for my mother, as she's unlikely to be able to reformat a block when she edits a line. 2. How do you make TB! ask for confirmation before going online? If the connection option is set to LAN or Manual, then it seems TB! will not do anything if there's no connection. If it's set to dial-up, then it connects without confirmation. That's what I've set it to at present, but I'd prefer for my mother to know with no doubt when she is going online. 3. HTML mail. I don't think my mother has any reason to send HTML mail, so that part's not a problem. Most of the HTML mail she receives is really just text sent as HTML. She also receives a few store catalogues and specials offers, which all display perfectly. However, each month she receives a report related to her breeding program. The report comes as an HTML mail. It should show six graphs, four tables, and some text. The figures are attached to the email. In TB!, these emails do not display correctly. The left edge (about 1 cm) of the first figure appears. Where the remainder of the figures should be is all blank. The tables and text appear correctly below the blank area of figures. If I double-click to open the html attachment in Internet Explorer, the figures do not appear. The space where each should appear is clearly marked, and there is a little picture icon in the top left corner of each rectangle, but I can't make the pictures appear. If I save all the attachments to a folder and open the message.htm attachment, I get the same as if I double-clicked in TB! Similarly if I export the email as .eml and open it in Outlook Express. The email received in Outlook Express displays perfectly. Unless someone can tell me how to make these emails display correctly in TB! (no complicated workarounds), I will have to uninstall TB! and go back to Outlook Express (unless someone can suggest another mailer that would be more secure and work perfectly for my mother). My mother returns tomorrow, and I leave tomorrow night. So this has to be solved quickly. -- Tim [EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v1.61 on Windows 98 4.10 Build 1998 Current version is 1.61 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: TB! for my Mum - several questions
Hi Tim, On Sunday, October 6, 2002 08:51 your local time, (04:36 my local time), you [T] wrote: T If I double-click to open the html attachment in Internet Explorer, T the figures do not appear. AFAIK, TB! doesn't download pictures with HTML mail. This is not a bug or a limitation but a security feature. The spammers frequently use pictures to confirm your mail address - which obviously results in more spam. T The email received in Outlook Express displays perfectly. Needless to say a perfect environment for spammers to exploit. T Unless someone can tell me how to make these emails display T correctly in TB! (no complicated workarounds), I will have to T uninstall TB! and go back to Outlook Express No need to revert back to OE T (unless someone can suggest another mailer that would be more T secure and work perfectly for my mother). Yes: Pocomail (www.pocomail.com). Fantastic mail client with HTML support both ways. Has an option to toggle picture(s) download on/off. IMO, the best client after TB! Re: Filter that strikes out messages that have been replied to
Hello Thomas, On Sun, 06 Oct 2002 at 09:19:53 [GMT +0700], you wrote: TF Please advise how you can change the font of a message in the TF message list by filter. First create a Color Group by clicking Options - Message List and Color Groups. Make sure you check the Strikethrough option. Next open your filters, create a new filter in Replied. Next put the symbol as the string text for sender and presence is Yes. On the Actions tab, put a check in Set the Message Color Group to, and choose the strikethrough color group you made. The only issue is trying to keep the messages in the same folder. I still haven't figured out why there isn't a checkbox to disable the Move Message to Folder option. Other than that it works fine.
