I used similar arrangements on my machines for several years, either out of the necessity to have two systems available or as a intermediate state when upgrading. Just be careful not to delete those critical XP system files on C (in the root directory) when removing Win98. IOW, don't boot from a DOS floppy and reformat drive C (I believe you can't do that when in XP, so you're safe there). That's the only thing I don't like about this approach: WinXP (NT, 2K) needs to put some system files on drive C. It makes backing up the system a little more tricky. Are you on TBOT? I'm not a pro in this field, but from my user's perspective, it is best to boot a Windows machine from the C: drive. That is what the OS expects, so that is where it looks for drivers, etc. I'm no expert either, but my experience (and as I told David, I did this all the time) shows that Win NT/2k/XP don't don't foolishly assume its system to be on drive C. Especially after Win2k, it handles dual-boot system pretty well. Some APPs do make foolish assumptions, but they're getting rarer by the day, I believe. I think you'd contain your risk now and into the future, and comply with the various programmers' expectations, by doing the following: Purchase a disk ghosting/imaging software (like Norton Ghost or the main competitor, whose name I cannot recall right now); DriveImage, I believe. And there's shareware/freeware. install and format a new D: drive; defrag and scandisk your c: drive; ghost the image of the entire c: drive to the d: drive; then format the c: drive and install XP. This is good if you don't really need to go back and forth between two systems during the transition. You see, leaving Win98 as it is may be more than just keeping a safe backup plan (in case WinXP fails). The transition could take weeks, or even months, that keeping the old system as it is provides many advantages. Of course, it all depends on how you like to proceed with the upgrade. Note, this occurs when OL is not running. My SMTP server is mail.cix.co.uk which I know is a bit overloaded these days, is there anything further that I can do to try and see where this problem actually lies? Yes I _am_ running Norton AV 2003, and it _is_ configured to scan outgoing mail, and I do know how redundant this is, and I _do_ want to keep using it ;-) -- Nick Using The Bat! v1.61 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.61 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I get these quite regularly during peak times (business hours), although I use Pipex. The underlying problem is a slow response from the mail server, so it is not really a TB! problem. What is a Bat! problem is the fact that you cannot increase the timeout period - the timeout in TB! is set to a shorter period than OL, and therefore timeouts more often. I also use NAV2003, but I am not aware of this contributing to the problem, because it only scans once the connection to the server has been established. Query re use of generic email addresses
I hope some-one can tell me if this is possible. I have now been searching for a couple of weeks for an answer with no luck. Also I find understanding Macros rather difficult. I run a mailing list for a group of about 100 people which I set up about a year ago and mastered this using the examples provided in TheBat! What I would like to do now is to provide generic email addresses to about 400 contacts on a web page. I do not want their own email addresses to show on the web page. What I need is (say) for an email like [EMAIL PROTECTED] where 'thiscontact' could be 1 of about 400 and when the email is received in TB for it to be sent out 'as is' to the real recipient. I can see how to do this one at a time with a filter, but I am wondering if there is a way to avoid having to have 400 filters, so the 'thiscontact' can be looked up in the contacts address book and insert the appropriate recipient's address in the To: Any help (in simple language) would be very much appreciated. Do I need a customized macro for this?
Hello tbudl, I collect information using forms on the web. Through CGI the users information is mailed back to me. I would like to auto-respond to them using The Bat! but heres the dilemma. My problem is the CGI script and not the actual sender is sending me the mail. I cannot auto-respond to the CGI script (No-Reply) because it would simply bounce back. I do get the users e-mail address but it is in the body of the message. Is there a macro that can scan the body of a message locate an e-mail address on a *certain line* and then direct an instant reply to that address? The reason why I wish to emphasize *certain line* is because I sometimes get more than one address per form and would not wish to violate the privacy of my users. Thank you -- Best regards, Victor B. There are numerous ways to achieve automated signing and encrypting. One way would be to enable in PGP preferences both options (Always sign ... and Always encrypt ...). To not sign/encrypt every message you then put the %NOUSEPGP macro into your templates. that's how I avoid signing on these mailing lists. You could also do it the other way round and use %SIGNCOMPLETE or %ENCRYPTCOMPLETE in templates - a much more tedious way. BTW, as for encryption the addressee needs to have his PGP key, it would just be an annoyance if you enable Always encrypt ...; messages to folks without a key wouldn't be encrypted but you would be asked to choose the key from the list or a server. -- Dierk Haasis The Bat 1.62 Christmas Edition on Windows XP 5.1 2600Service Pack 1 Assumptions are the mother of all screw ups. Too many messages to reply to about my headers
Hello tbudl, I apologize for any mix-ups but I check my from and to twice before I send mail. Two times I tried sending personal messages but they've somehow made there way into the UDL. I too do not know what's wrong and after double checking everything I can not see what's wrong. I never replied sooner because I was out and when I got back, noticed everyone was talking about me. Is anything wrong with this message? If not theres got to be something wrong only (so far) when I try personally replying to someone. Thank you all for your patience and understanding. -- Best regards, Victor B. The greatest most annoying problem halts my PC
Hello tbudl, I am on my 4th days trial with The Bat! and everything about it is amazing except for this. The Bat! slows my entire PC down from out of no where. It doesn't freeze exactly, it *slows* it down incredibly but from here on I will refer to it as a freeze. For example in the last 4 days I would leave my PC only to come back and have to shut it down hard. The Bat! makes the entire system practically unresponsive. At first I had The Bat! in Workstation with TCP/IP mode and trying to hide the Display Connection Centre would *freeze* the system (hard boot). The fix for the above was not to hide the Display Connection Centre. The problem then would be it somehow would *freeze* up again (hard boot) leaving me no choice but to fetch my mail using another client because trying to fetch mail with The Bat! again would *freeze* it up again. I tried putting The Bat! into TCP/IP or Dial-out Server mode and now I can hide the Display Connection Centre without *freezing* the entire system. The problem is the entire system *freezes* up again (I do not know why or how) leaving me no choice but to fetch my mail using another client. Then I can use The Bat! again. I think theres something wrong with The Bat! in fetching my mail. At some point it *freezes* leaving me no choice but to hard boot. Once back up again I can launch The Bat! but can not fetch mail without *freezing* the system. If once I boot back up I fetch mail with my other mail client then and only then can I get back into using The Bat! Does anyone have an idea? I would be greatly appreciative to any idea or solution that doesn't hinder it's performance. Thank you -- Best regards, Victor B. In reply to Victor's message 'The greatest most annoying problem halts my PC' on Sat, 7 Dec 2002 00:31:36 -0500 from [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Victor, VBG Does anyone have an idea? I would be greatly appreciative to any VBG idea or solution that doesn't hinder it's performance. The only thing I could think of - admittedly not really like what you describe, but the only thing that comes to mind - is the animated bat icon in the taskbar when you have un-read mail. It has, at times, had bad habits of causing Explorer to use 90% of the processor, the solution was to disable the animated icon (first page of Options - Preferences). I'm not sure TB! still has this abnormality, as I disabled the animation, and prefer it that way. But its worth trying... I'm sure its something simple. :) -- dan. e [EMAIL PROTECTED] w http://www.danhirning.com Current version is 1.61 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
