Two of my ISPs have now started using Interscan VirusWall (I am sure

My POP3/smtp provider (not my ISP0 puts email through 3 virus checkers, and I

V2 Some observations

2003-09-24 Thread Gerard
Hi Bat Users,

I have installed V2 last week and I have noticed some differences in
behavior from previous versions, which I would like all of you to have
a look at.

1) V2 creates more duplicate email msg¦s
I now have 200 duplicates every now and then in 1 day in 1 folder.
That is much more then I had before. I use SMTP/POP3 on all but 1
account and this is not the one.

2) Restore from backup not complete
I made a back up and reinstalled that on my laptop but not all the
msg were restored. I had to do a restore, for the same file, at least
twice to get all the email in all the folders.
I had all option marked when doing the backup and restore.

3) The TB! folder on my drive was filled with 92 tmp files
I have thrown them all out now, but I think it is sloppy programming.

4) V2 seems slightly slower then the previous version on some actions.
I regularly mark folder read with 80 msg. This is visibly slower in V2

5) A file that is saved to the virtual folder my documents is save to
the real folder AND PATH of the user on win2K.
This becomes a problem if you switch users and do a save because it
gets save in the file structure of the original user and not the
current one. I just noticed this and this might have been pre-V2
   behaviour to.

Are you guy¦s and girls seeing this to?

Re: Adding a memo to message

2003-09-24 Thread zParticle
Are we talking about taking the time (an extra step) to put an
exclamation at the beginning of every memo, just so that the column
width can be set to 7?

It's most likely just to accommodate the fact that the message list
typically uses proportional fonts, and to provide a consistent visual
cue.

For example, at a column width of 7, you'll only see a single PIXEL
for some characters, such as a capital T, which might be missed in a
quick visual scan. And if you widen it, you'll end up with a variable
number of characters appearing in that column, which is kinda messy.

I'm pretty sure ! was selected because it's a single pixel wide and
effectively provides a consistent visual icon, not unlike the park/flag
symbols.

Yep, that's exactly what it needs to make the memo feature useful on a
regular basis.

Or if the programmers want to get fancy, make the entire memo appear

allow in-place editing of the memo from the column list (like renaming

Strange and very annoying: I now often get prompted for username/pwd - what can I do? (TB! 1.62)

2003-09-24 Thread gd_news
Hello list,

I've been using TB! for a few years now... but now I got a real
problem I can't seem to figure out. Perhaps someone on the list
can give me a hint with my problem.

I'm using The Bat! 1.62, there are multiple mail accounts set up.
These accounts use different providers. The PC is connected to a LAN
all the time.
Now, sometimes when the automatic mailbox check is done or when I
press check mail for all, I get prompted with a window to confirm
username and password and a checkbox named Update account's data.
This shouldn't happen - the accounts have not changed in any way.

When I press OK, The Bat! reports an error... (mostly: connection to
host broken). When I then press get new mail for this mailaccount,
it works without error - so the settings were still correct!

I have experimented a little with authentication settings, no luck.
The only indicator I have is that it might be related to the number of
different mailproviders... sounds stupid, huh? But it happened only
sometimes when I had my mailaccounts at only two providers; now that
they are distributed over three, it happens every few minutes!

Has anybody seen this? Or, better yet: does anybody know a fix?

TIA for any answer!

Georg

Viewing message in Dispatcher

2003-09-24 Thread ken green
If I invoke Mail Dispatcher to see all messages on the server and try to
view a message nothing happens unless I check the message to be
received.

Is this normal behavior? I can understand the logic behind this
behavior, but is there a UI reason behind it? This behavior seems very
awkward/inefficient for reading mail on the server remotely.

Why the extra step?

I understand that new messages will automatically be checked to Receive,
but if I have a machine at work that is frequently downloading mail but
leaving a copy on the server, that message is marked Read, so the
Receive box is unchecked when checking through Dispatcher.

Note that I'm not asking for messages to all be marked Received - that
would defeat the purpose of using Dispatcher and Selective Download.

I'm just wondering why I can't select a message in Dispatcher, hit Enter
and view that message, regardless of flags set for that message.

It sometimes doesn't work for the very first message though, but navigating

For those using newest at top, this is a really great set up for reading
threaded mailing lists. Maybe everyone knows this already (it took me

such large Swen.A messages, that mail was being bounced and the TB
forum listservers disabled my mail. I have now created some filters

Replying to messages to post new

2003-09-24 Thread ken green
I've noticed the well-done moderator templates used for things like
reminding us to quote at bottom, configure signatures correctly, etc.

But I haven't seen anything for people who want to post a new thread,
and select a message, hit Reply, strip everything out, insert new
subject and body, then send.

When viewing threads by reference, things get screwed up this way. I am
constantly switching between view by reference and view by subject.
Neither view seems to be perfect (and that may be because of humans and
not TB). Online archives (which view by ref) get messed up, and you
can't switch that view!

Since this is an account-level option (view by Thread setting affects
all folders in that account), I'd consider this issue to be pretty low
priority. (I can just see me trying to convince 20+ lists to post a
certain way - perhaps this is why no moderator intervention?)

Multiple Responses re. Selective Download Filter Syntax

2003-09-24 Thread Joseph N.
Thanks to all those who replied to my query about selective download
filter syntax. Ironically, I received none of the replies, because
TBUDL blocked my mail due to excessive bounces from my ISP, which in
turn was due to my mailbox constantly becoming full from Swen.A
messages.

I have now fixed that problem and am back in the flow. So here, a tad
late, are a few responses:

* To Roelof:

Because of the single quotation marks

But the TB! help file specifically says to use single quotation marks:

---Begin Text---
...
Pipe character | can be used when the signal string contains
two alternatives. For example, string John|Jack means that the
filter will search for John OR Jack in the specified location.
If either is present, the search is successful. If neither are
present, the search fails.
...
Any text containing the special characters mentioned above
must be enclosed in single quotes
---End Text---

* To Ken:

You've probably already fixed your situation, but the signal string I
was using for selective downloads is the one I posted with my initial
query. It was only about 65% effective, so I have switched
strategies. I am now filtering at the ISP level for all messages over
a certain size. Since I only use this address for newsgroups and
mailing lists, it should work fine; at least, it has been working so
far today

* To zParticle:

Thanks for the helpful cross-ref to the Agent NG.

Palm Connection

2003-09-24 Thread Freddie Freeloader
Hello All,

I know this subject has come up several times in the past, but I
was wondering, if a full fledged conduit for the Palm operating
system is not likely, and not being a programmer myself, if it is
possible to just write a script that will cull all of the addresses
from the Palm desktop and update the address book in TB?

I ran across something like this some time ago for Eudora and it
works well. It is a one way update, but better than doing it
manually through a vcf extraction and import.

   What do you-all think?

Hello Andrew,

JP MyGate came back with error message (similar to) Posting failed -

MyGate creates logs in /log/ subdir (if you turned this option on).
Look through it yourself or send it to me directly.

Today, for the first time, I started to get this error when trying to
send a reply to a newsgroup. I logged several sessions and the error
actually reported by the news server is:

news.fu-berlin.de:119 441 Duplicate Mime-Version header

And it is true, this is a transcript of part of the session:

It looks like MyGate is adding the first MIME-Version line. I have
sent other messages with no problem, but this specific one causes always
the same error if I try to send it.

Heh, v2.5 will be a bit more specific in messages ;) Patience, please.
It will be ready tomorrow or after tomorrow 100%.

PGP/Mime and extra line feed on TBOT

2003-09-24 Thread Mary Bull
Hello Everyone!

Is there an expression like %NOUSEPGP that I can put into the address
book for TBOT such that I won't have to turn PGP/Mime off in the
Privacy menu of the Edit Mail Message window and, in addition, uncheck
the boxes related to PGP in Account/Properties/Options?

When I don't do both of these things, I get a double-spaced post on
TBOT. I know, it is an old Yahoo! problem, and PGP/Mime may not always
be the cause. But it seems to be, in my case. No post of mine was ever
double-spaced before I got V. 2.00.6 of The Bat! and enabled PGP/Mime.
And %NOUSEPGP, for the Bat lists, kept my signature delimiter out of
trouble.

It's a minor thing to have to remember to do, but with all the
conveniences The Bat! offers, I would really rather not be having to
run back and forth to Account/Properties when I do actually want to
sign a message with PGP, and it would also be more comfortable to me
not to have to remember to change the Privacy menu, depending on my
recipient.

%NOUSEPGP is working just fine in the AB templates for friends and
family to whom I write privately--it keeps the potentially confusing
little ? button off those mails.

And I thought it was doing okay for the lists, also. But just having
the PGP/Mime options exist apparently throws Yahoo!'s wheels into a
skid.

Anyway, if anyone knows an easier way for me to keep the extra line
feed out of my posts to TBOT, I would be forever grateful if you would
tell it to me! :)

Mary

Faulty editor action in subject line

2003-09-24 Thread rich gregory
Open an Edit mail message window.
Enter a subject at least 4 or 5 words in length.
Place the cursor at the beginning of the 2nd word from the left.
Hold down SHIFT + CTRL while pressing the right arrow (words right of the cursor
become highlited).
Once several words are highlited (and still holding the SHIFT + CTRL keys now press
the left arrow key.
See the incorrect action of the editor? It doews not un-highlite what you just
highlited, it instead now highlites the first word of the subject w/o undoing the
highlighting you would normally be undoing with this action.

It works fine in the message itself, but editing the subject is not working right.

QUESTION: Will having posted this message here (as opposed to at RITs' site) do
anything at all toward alerting them (RitLabs) that such a problem exists? I
find that I get better responses to my queries here than there and I'd hate like
 h*ll to have
 to post everything twice!!

1) The Bat! should be written as such. It is not the Bat, TheBat,

2) When The Bat! ends a sentence, no period is needed. For example:

(Just like when your question ends with a quotation.). For example:

I had the 100% CPU usage thing on a client's win2k server for quite a
while. I went back and forth uninstalling and reinstalling among
several TB versions but never could quite figure out what was going
on. Pausing the antivirus software (Symantec Corporate) got things
going a bit better. Sometimes.

I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled Win2k over the existing
installation and everything's been fine since. It turns out that TB
was exhibiting the most symptoms because it gets used the most, but
the real problem was the OS.

As much as I like The Bat, as an editor I abhor this advice from the

the exclamation point, but others need not do this. It is sufficient
in general use, and particularly in running text, to simply capitalize
the name.

The same is true of things like eBay and dBASE. There is no need to
follow goofy capitalization in running text. Ebay and Dbase are just
fine.

I hope someone will disagree with me on this and provide a good PIM

support--which provides the functional connection between the mail
client and the PIM--does not work very well. I've tried it with the
same results with a few different programs. The best I could get was
to use Lotus Organizer and to periodically transfer Org's contacts
into the TB! address book (unless they were in the AB, they didn't
populate a mail message correctly). Frankly, it's a far cry from the
great interoperability that, say, Eudora has with other programs
(including Lotus Organizer, which can even feed groups to Eudora). On
the other hand, TB! is so much the superior mail client that I've put
up with inconveniences like that in order to use it as the mailer.
