I am using WinXP, I hope this helps on Windows 2000.

If you are advanced user and know about registry you may try setting
permissions for these registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.vcf

Right click on the key, click permissions, click advanced. Here you
may select an user (e.g. users) and select the deny "Set Value"
checkbox. You may need to revert it back later, if you want to change
association.

It's funny. Today you send a message about LDAP and TB and today I
started testing LDAP under Win2K AD for another project I'm working
on concerning whether I can update the directory through TB. Just
WAGging it, I'm guessing that any changes I try to make will be added
to the local addressbook associated with the LDAP directory I'm
connecting to. I'll let you know how it works out though.

While this may not help you, here's what I had to do (I figured all
this out using a packet sniffer to see what the query and response
stuff was.)

- Connecting to a Win2K AD DC LDAP
- I did have to use a search base of: dc=doh,dc=nmdoh,dc=nmsg
- I did have to authenticate with my domain account.

Hope this helps.

Just doing the obvious.
On the 'genaral' tab of the AB properties
  Gave the AB a name
On the 'LDAP' tab
  check 'this AB is associated'
enter the server address and port number
  use '*' as search base
I used an LDAP server I had to log on, so I entered authentication

On consulting the LDAP AB I had to enter a search condition. My
favorite search string was @ in the address. TB stores the search
results in the LDAP AB until the next search (exiting TB doesn't
matter)

Mind you, I didn't use Exchange, but that shouldn't matter, LDAP is
LDAP.

Exactly. This is the reason I had so much trouble. TB only gave me the
status "connecting..." in the status bar.

As it turns out, I did not need a user name and password for connecting
so when I deleted it, it all went fine.

Now I use the LDAP address but without any problems. Actually, it runs
pretty well.

I have submitted requests at Mantis for:

   * Making the quick search also match on handle.

problem when you are on a local connection).

The moment some macros are interpreted has been changed in v2.
Your observations point out the possibility that the %ABToName macro

Yes, Winrar is installed, but no, it is not just TB! that I'm concerned
with.

I realize that Winrar can be used for the purpose, but I was curious
about experiences with such apps as SecondCopy and Handy Backup, which
seem to offer a quick and dirty 'lite-weight' backup which could be used
on 'hot' data, perhaps every hour or so. This in addition to the full
system backup which is done nightly.

But the immediate problem is that a backup with TB!'s facilities revealed a
corrupted file. The particular folder may have been corrupt for a long
time, since it is mostly archived stuff about a particular issue which
has been inactive. I guess the bottom line is that I'll have to keep the
regular system backups much longer than I have been keeping them.

Thanks for your thought, and best to your daughter...

I don't know what happened here, but I do receive HTML messages

Mind explaining how you did it? The only thing I'm missing to run TB

Is that going to work? Isn't ^ meaning beginning of line? He said
the word "Read" appears in the subject, so that would fail on:

Yes. I use the Lotus Notes LDAP here at work. I did have to

Thanks, Allie. I had figured that would be the case, but I thought maybe
someone might know of one those neat little TB! tricks. :)

I agree that TB!'s backup is not very suitable as a routine, periodic
backup operation. In this case, I was doing the backup to move TB! to a
new machine. Since the problem only shows up with TB!'s own backup
facility, and the last such was probably done months ago, the question
is whether I still have have 'regular' backups that go back far enough
to recover a good file.

Actually we do nightly backups using NovaStor+, but I've been thinking
of installing SecondCopy or HandyBackup to do lite-weight backups of
hot data several times a day. Have you, by any chance, compared these
two, or other similar apps? Any thoughts appreciated!

Off to start digging. Thanks for your comments...

That's probably because I've cropped the middle of the PGP to make
it more readable, and because I'm super sensitive about leaving even
encrypted sensitive data on archived newsgroups.

The filter string is

^Read:

and don't forget to turn on the Regular Expression proccessing:

Sorting Office -> Some Rule -> Options -> [x] Regular expressions

No. Just default I guess. I don't even know the diferences!

No. Have tried this.

MP> I suppose that depends on how many (and from what sources) you get.

Yes. I had over 12,000 attachments prior to doing the upgrade. I
receive one news group by digest, among other requisites. The
attached messages accumulate very rapidly. The files are renamed with
an illogical to read name and consequently the attachment folder is
becoming a *super sized* trash can. Unfortunately still holding some
required files.

Please, if someone else could test this. I shouldn't be hard. Send
yourself an email with attachment. Have attachments go to a special
custom folder (if stored with the email body, I guess you would never
know whether or not the attachment is being deleted when you delete the
email). Delete and check for attachment. ??
So far there is only;

- Rich

I upgraded very recently (2.01.3). Rich has the same Ver. Mark you
have Ver 2.01.56 (how come?) Could this be it?

Thanks mate. I did manage to work it out shortly after I sent the
original post. It is, as pointed out by yourself, remarkably simple

> The moment you open OE for whatever reason, it will associate itself
> with these file types without asking. Send a bugreport to the makers

That makes sense and if I thought I would get any joy from sending a
bug report to Microsoft I may do just that (but I may end up sending a
lot of reports), but The Bat! losing its file association happens without
opening OE. As I mentioned, because I don't use OE but have a couple of colleagues
who do (and sometimes have questions) I will probably only open the application
once every couple of weeks but TB will still lose its file associations more
often than that. Is there anything else anyone can think of that may
be causing this?

Many thanks

Steve
