Hi David I've run NAV 2003 on W2k/XP Home/XP Pro with a variety of email clients while I was looking for a replacement to my much loved Forte Agent. It has always worked 'out of the box' and shows an indicator when scanning out going mail and a much smaller indicator in the task bar (in the form of a small envelope, easy to miss) when scanning incoming mail. I have found it very effective in picking up problems. I don't change any settings when installing it except for the silly scheduling and automatic updates it sets up (it's my PC, I decide when it does what!). I also have Hotmail Popper installed since I use a Hotmail address in news groups. Hotmail Popper also uses Localhost (127.0.0.1) and they work fine together. Do you have anything else running that may affect NAV? Is it set up to check mail (sorry, silly question)? If you have been trying different email apps is it possible that one of them is interfering? It my be worth un-installing any you have tried and don't want to keep (and I found lots in that category!). Have you carried out a system scan with up to date virus signatures just in case it's a virus causing the problem? Otherwise it may just be necessary to work through the settings again although that can be soul destroying. Re: One filter in a group triggering
Hello Ian, M I think it should work Ian. Are you sure you set up this structure? M Parent Filter (*) (**) M Sub F. 1: If A Set Colour Group 1 (***) M Sub F. 2: If B Set Colour Group 2 (***) M Sub F. 3: If C Set Colour Group 3 (***) M Where: M (*) With a condition that will _always_ trigger (so that subfilters will M be executed) and with _no_ action. M (**) Set to 'Continue processing with other filters' M (***) _NOT_ set to 'Continue processing with other filters' I think that one problem is that the conditions for the sub-filters can see one message trigger two or more filters. Setting them to continue sees it continue with the remaining sub-filters. What I would like is something like an exit command so that as soon as one condition is met in a group of sub-filters, the remaining sub-filters are ignored even if they might match. The sub-filters should _not_ be set to continue processing... and that achieves the 'exit' that you want. As soon as a subfilter has a match, the rest of subfilters will be skipped. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: One filter in a group triggering
Hello Ian, RA Which I think is why Miguel suggested the subfilters should NOT be set RA to continue processing. This is then the exit command from the group of RA subfilters. RA Doesn't that work for you? When I told the filter not to continue processing, then all filters would stop, not just the sub-filters. If your parent filter has a condition that will _always_ trigger (needed so the sub-filters will be processed) and you don't set it to continue processing then no other filter below will be processed. That is why this parent filter has to be set to continue..., so the rest of filters will be processed. The subfilters will be processed if the parent filter has a match, independently of how continue processing is set in the parent filter. Basically, I have a number of folders I filter my mail to depending on the source. I also flag messages either directly to me or those sent by me and set a colour group appropriately. Messages from me are coloured blue and have italic font, while those to me are coloured green and have normal font. The filter to apply the colour groups are common filters (I monitor some 6 e-mail accounts for myself and others) which then need to pass control over to the account filters to move the messages to the appropriate folders. I'm doing something similar and it works, although I don't use common filters. So for the moment I have worked something out, but it would be good if an action to exit the sub-filter group was added as it would make filters a little more flexible. The exit action is not needed. It is implicit when you do_not_ set the _sub-filters_ to continue processing. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: [Query] Norton AntiVirus and The Bat!
Hello, everyone. I thank each one of you who responded to my query. Before I provide additional information that some of you requested, I will note that the following Web page from RITLabs' Knowledge Base indicates that modern versions of NAV work transparently with The Bat!: http://www.ritlabs.com/kb/idx/8/003/article/ Using Norton Antivirus Old Versions of Norton Antivirus can work as POP-proxy, and can be used with The Bat without plugin. POP3-server in The Bat will became localhost, username must be changed according to NAV documentation and include username and real POP3-server name. Last version of NAV works transparently and doesn't require any changes from user's side. I currently have Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional installed on my system running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2), but I was given Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier as a gift. With NAV 2003, I have the progress bar enabled for outgoing e-mail, but it simply does not appear when I use The Bat!, although it does appear with every other e-mail client that I have tried. I do have automatic e-mail scanning enabled in NAV. I check for new virus definitions every single *day* (and have the feature to download the definitions automatically enabled, too). I am paranoid, and I run NAV once or twice per day, usually during lunch and before shutting down (or the first thing the next morning). I think that Symantec normally releases updates in the United States on Thursdays, unless a severe threat arises. One can download each day's build of the virus definitions, however, from Symantec's Web site. (You just cannot use LiveUpdate.) Regarding conflicts with other e-mail clients, The Bat! was the first client that I installed, in addition to my existing client, Outlook XP/2002. The progress bar for NAV failed to appear at that point. I have been evaluating other clients and the progress bar appeared (appears) with all of them. I have deleted all clients that I decided against, because they do not support Cyrillic messages, except for The Bat! and for PocoMail 3.2. I think the problem is that my operating system is corrupted. One day, Windows XP Professional suddenly took a very, very long time to shut down. When I filed an issue with Microsoft Support, the suggestions of the representative that I implemented, including a hot fix that was to be a part of SP 2, made matters worse. I am going to have to do a clean installation of Windows XP Pro, which may clear up the problem with The Bat! and NAV. (At that point, I will install SystemWorks 2005 Premier.) Another indication of a problem with Windows, and possibly SystemWorks Pro 2003, is that automatic updating in SystemWorks Pro stopped working a few months ago. Not too long ago, the feature started working again; perhaps SP 2 fixed the problem (which was with Windows and not SystemWorks...maybe). I want to decide upon a replacement for Outlook before I reinstall Windows XP Pro from scratch. BayesIt! Configuration with Russian and English E-Mail
Hello, everyone! I have just read Alexey Vinogradov's Web page on The Bat!'s BayesIt! anti-spam plug-in, at the following URL: http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesiteng.htm (The Russian version is at the following URL.) http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesit.htm ASIDE: For those of you who have not found the BayesIt! plug-in for The Bat! (now that it is installed with TB!), the path is as follows: '\Program Files\The Bat!\BayesIt\bayesit.tbp' You can find information about BayesIt! on RITLabs Web site at the following URL: http://www.ritlabs.com/kb/idx/41/0/ Alexey warns, on his Web page, that is a deprecated document which is actual for the plugin up to version 0.4gm. Since the add-on BayesIt was included into official distribution of the last versions of The Bat!, the information page about installing and setting up the plugin (ver. 0.5.x and newer) is now placed at RitLabs website (see at section 'Solution' on official RitLabs site I installed the plug-in today, and I also found Alexey's Web site about his plug-in. I receive e-mail in English and in Russian. Some messages are in English only, some are in Russian only (including some spam), and some are in Russian and English. I have not yet run the configuration wizard for BayesIt!, but based upon the information about the wizard on Alexey's Web page, you must set up BayesIt! for a single language, such as Russian or English. Actually, you skip a configuration step if all of your e-mail is in English. Otherwise, you have to enter a locale for non-English e-mail, such as 'Russian_Russia'. The options are, Yes, all my mail is in English, or No, I receive mail in my native language (not English). Alexey warns, Also note that this technology has no sense for English-speaking mail. Well, English is my native language, but all of my e- mail is not in English. :-) Has anyone faced a similar situation and how did you resolve the problem? I can see the possibility of selecting the Russian locale and then entering all of the Latin/English characters in the alphabet of my locale (US). I would then, however, have a problem with the transliteration table. It is easy enough to do the transliteration from Russian/Cyrillic letters to English letters, but I wonder if all of the Latin/English characters that I would have added to the Russian locale would end up creating a huge mess with transliteration. I could send e-mail to Alexey; I assume that he is still developing BayesIt! for RITLabs. The alternative might be to use an external program, such as SpamPal or K9, but won't an external program that uses Bayesian filtering also have a problem of all of my e- mail not being in English? So you would just have to change this OS setting to show system (or all) files and TC will be able to apply all actions on them it can, including copying. If by OS settings you mean TC's settings, it was sett to show hidden/system files and I can see them. I can't remember which file wasn't copying when I tried to copy the entire C drive before. But I am on the WinXP-Home computer now, and I can't even open the C:\System Volume Information directory/folder to see what files are in there. And when I tried to copy that directory, it doesn't nothing. When I do a Shift+Alt+Enter to calculate the disk space occupied by each directory, it shows the result for each directory EXCEPT the system Volume Information directory. Do I need some specific settings in WinXP? [I am the only user on that computer; so I don't have to log in or anything.] -- Thanks in advance JM Using The Bat! 1.62r Under Windows 98 4.10 Build A Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Total Commander
Hello z5worg, If by OS settings you mean TC's settings, it was sett to show hidden/system files and I can see them. snipped TC tell you that this option is for experts only. And, forgive me if I'm mistaken, you don't seem to be too expert if you don't know that the C:\System Volume Information directory/folder is a _very_ _special_ System folder that contains what its name says and that is only accessible by the System. This is why you can't open, copy or do anything with it. You should not fiddle with hidden or systems folders and files unless you know very well what you are doing. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: One filter in a group triggering
Hello Ian, M The exit action is not needed. It is implicit when you do_not_ set the M _sub-filters_ to continue processing. Well, I created the various common filters to set the colour group, set one to be the parent,... snipped quite a bit In my mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I said I'll test it as soon as I can, but it _should_ work. Well, I did test it and it works. And I'll insist that no exit action is needed. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Re: Auto Backup
Hi, Tony. I use something like following batch-file: ==start-backup.bat=== rem backup registry regedit /e c:\Backup\TheBat.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat! rem backup program and mail folder c:\APack\WinRAR\Rar.exe a c:\Backup\mail.rar c:\_aff_\TheBat rem create folder for current backup md c:\Backup\%Date% rem place files into folder move c:\Backup\*.* c:\Backup\%Date% ==start-backup.bat=== So i use WinRAR to pack my mail folder. Very simple. One of the tricks is creation folder with name as current date (md c:\Backup\%Date%) -- Ivan Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
