turning off automatic copyright symbol with (c)
HI, As an attorney, I am frequently needing to cite statute and regulation subsections in e-mails. Often, I need to type a "c" within parentheses in order to indicate a particular section's subsection, such as SSA § 202(c). However, in normal typing, "(c)" automatically changes to "©" unless I use a work-around by typing a space between the "c" and one of the parentheses, and then, later, using the backspace key to close up the space. This is tedious! How can I turn off this "feature?" I see nothing in the "Preferences" window that addresses this. Thanks. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! Gmail and two-step verification and The Bat
Hi I am resending this e-mail because I forgot to add an important point. See, below. Starting, yesterday, Google turned on two-step verification for one of my 16 gmail accounts. Thus, when I attempt to use The Bat to download mail from that gmail account, nothing downloads. The log file shows that an application-specific password is required and directs me to this webpage: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833#zippy=%2Cyou-still-cant-sign-in However, the instructions there direct me to access the "app passwords" feature and generate a password to use with the app. So, I selected "mail"and generated the password. However, where do I enter this information in The Bat so that TB can freely access the gmail account. Any ideas as to what I need to do other than to turn off two-factor identification? I have no difficulty accessing this account with my cell phone. It is important to note that, of course, I already have a regular password for the gmail account, which is entered in the appropriate box in account properties: (Account - properties - transport - receive mail.) stopping automatic copyright symbol with a "c" enclosed in parentheses
Once again, The Bat seems to have automatic operations that cannot be turned off. This time, it is the creation of a copyright symbol when trying to a "c" within a parenthesis: I frequently type legal references to all sorts of rules, statutes, etc., and the text, "(c)" is not infrequent. Currently, the only way I can accomplish this is by leaving a space between the "c" and the close parenthesis, and then later deleting the space. There must be a better way. Changing default colorformat for replies
My recent upgrade to ver 9.4.4 has caused a change in the appearance of reply messages that I don't like and am hoping someone can explain to me how I can change the appearance back to what it was. Prior to the upgrade, in an HTML reply, the quoted text from previous messages would appear in black with a blue line running alongside the left margin of the text. However, both the text and the line appear in a putrid lime color. In a text reply, that same lime green color appears not only in the text of the prior message that is quoted, it is also part of the initials or carrots in the left-hand margins. I tried changing the color under "Options" / Preferences / "Viewer/Editor" / "Profile Layout" / This works for changing the color of the quoted text in a text document, but not for the initials in the left-hand margin, and, it has no impact on the text color in HTML documents. sending e-mail to a group with only group name appearing in recipient's "to" field
Hi, everyone, I am on a committee of about 90 people. I wanted to send an email to everyone in the group without everyone's e-mail address displaying in the "to" field when the message is received by the group members. Downloading "old" gmail
HI, How does one get The Bat to download "old" gmail from the gmail server? Specifically, I have a number of different gmail accounts through which I access various list servs including TBUDL! In some cases, I have had these accounts for a longer period than for which the gmail messages have been downloaded on to my hard drive. Usually this is because I had set up the accounts when I was an employee and the e-mail was downloaded to a work computer.I am running out of the 15GB space that Google allows one to have for free. 100% of it is due to gmail. How to do I force The Bat e-mail client to download the mail that is stored by Google, but is not on my computer? In one case, for example, I need to download all mail from 2005 - 2011. I have on my hard drive, all mail from 2011 to 9/22/2020. So, I want The Bat to download all mail from 2005 - 2011 for a particular account. For another account, it might be mail from 2012 - 2015. etc. Thanks. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! Re: Re[2]: TLS Handshake and Certificate problems
I would like to return to the main subject. Is there yet a confirmed fix for the error message and the failure of The Bat to send e-mail from a gmail domain? If so, what is it? There has been a lot of technical jargon about changing command line parameters or adding certain text to a shortcut. But, subsequent e-mails suggest that this does not always work. So, at this point, is there a definitive resolution? Re: TLS Handshake and Certificate problems
I am coming late to this "party," having been offline since April 8. I use The Bat for 18 e-mail accounts: 5 private domains, a dormant Yahoo account, and 12 Gmail accounts. Beginning April 7 I have been unable to send mail from any of the Gmail accounts. The error message is "The server has aborted the connection." and, like everyone else, the log file shows "TLS handshake failure. Invalid server certificate (The certificate cannot be used for this purpose." I have never used Avast. I use Bitdefender and have done so for nearly 6 years and I use The Bat ver. 7.4.16. Not version 8 and not version 9. My wife has a separate installation of The Bat on her computer (ver 5.8.8), with the same 12 Gmail accounts.Curiously, she doesn't seem to have any problem sending e-mail from at least two of the 12 Gmail accounts. We haven't checked the other 10 accounts.Because I access this forum from a gmail account, I am only able to send this e-mail because I have accessed my gmail account online. Reading through this thread it appears that a definitive solution has yet to be found and it seems that updating to the latest version has its own problems.Maxim may have fixed the problem for ver 9.1.10, but it sounds like ver 9 has other problems. So, can this problem be fixed from those of us with earlier versions? I would not object to upgrading to ver 9, but it seems that there are other problems with ver. 9. Backing up in general
HI, For some time, I had been living "dangerously" by not doing proper backups. Thas changed now: I have greatly increased by hard drive size, and also now have a cloud backup solution. Shortly, I will also have an additional local backup. Although, I had occasionally saved all of my Bat files to an external hard drive, this was not something that was regularly scheduled.I thus discovered, that there was no .tbk file on my computer's hard drive. I have fixed that. I just ran my first backup to that file and have scheduled daily backups.Reading through the documentation, about backups, however, it is clear to me that if that daily backup is stored to the "cloud," one is still at risk for losing up to a day's worth of correspondence. While it is true that, in the event of a catastrophic hard drive failure, I could download to a restored hard drive all maill that was received in the previous 24 hours, since that mail will still be on the servers - both the gmail acount mail as well as mail run through the server that handles my private domain name, any sent mail, which is only resident on my hard drive, would be lost. I could set up a routine that always sends mail to myself, such that sent mail is run through the gmail and private domain servers, but I see that is merely clogging up my system and duplicates. Merely backing up the .tbk file to the cloud does not solve the issue of having real time backups of messages generated bewteen the daily backups. Would a better solution be to set my cloud back to do continuous backups and then to include the The Bat! folder and all subfolders as part of the regular backup. That way all the .TBB files, which hold the messages, would also be backed up? Does this make sense, or is there a better solution. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! spontaneous restart of The Bat when executing
The Bat has been acting strangely for the past - approximately - four months. It will, usually, but not always, automatically stop, shut down, and then re-start, if I attempt to copy text into an e-mail. The text could be a URL from a website, or a portion of a Power Point slide. It doesn't matter. Unfortunately, when this happens, none of the open e-mails will re-open. If I have 10 e-mails open, I either have to recall which ones among any one of a dozen e-mail accounts, or forego having them open, again, on my desktop. E-mails that are being edited for sending will be in the outbox. However, open e-mail from the in-box, will be back among the thousands (tens of thousands!!) of e-mails and there is no way to recall all that were open. This constant re-starting of The Bat is annoying. It never did this before. I am using the same laptop that I have always used.No hardware has been added or changed. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix this? This happens about 95% of the time. Re: restoring sorting office filters for one account
This follows my prior post in which I asked how to restore lost filters. After searching the forums at the Ritlabs website, I discovered that I could restore the filters by highlighting the account for which I wished to restore filers, clicking on "account" and then "sorting office/filters." In the window that opened, I then could click on "file" and "restore filters." That, in turn, opened up a dialogue box asking if I wanted to restore, I clicked yes and another folder with "orphan filters" opened up. However, I then had to manually copy, one by one, each of the dozen filters that I had into the inbox. If I tried to delete or cut the filter in the orphan filters directory, an error exception window would pop up and everything would freeze in the filters window. I then had to close that window and reopen the sorting filters/office window and do another restore. This raises several questions: 1. Why did this happen in the first place? It occurred, I am guessing, following my computer's forced shut down for a windows update. But why? What can be done to avoid this? 2. I didn't know that there were additional forums in addition to the two list serv e-mail groups for The Bat: this one and the beta forum . Does the online forum also have an e-mail list? 3. restoring sorting office filters for one account
Hi, Everyone, I have 20 mail accounts and most of them have filters. The filters for one of these accounts, which has one of the largest set of filters - 20 of them - have all disappeared. This happened overnight, when my laptop was taken over by an unannounced Windows updates (grrr). (As a separate issue, I had a dozen e-mail messages - at least - all open, and I now have to try and remember all that I was working on at the time. It would be nice if The Bat would automatically restore all open messages when there is an unexpected shutdown, in much the same way that Word or Excel will restore any open file.) I don't need to restore anything else other than the filters for this one account, and, I have downloaded and sent a number of messages from multiple accounts since the filters went missing. So, is it possible to restore the missing filters for this one account without having to recreate all of them or restoring my entire database? Thanks. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! He wrote on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, 5:32:02 AM: M> - On the MAIL directory, locate the folder/directory with the name M> of your account. M> - In this folder, locate a file named ACCOUNT.SRB This is the file M> that contains all filters for that account. M> This ACCOUNT.SRB file is the one that you have to copy OVER the M> corresponding one in computer B. It worked fine on the second computer. However, I have just noticed that the filters for this same account have stopped working, as of yesterday, on this account on the first computer. The srb file is still in the account. So, what is going on? If I click on "file" in the filters window, ther is a restore filters command. Clicking on that asks if I want a "per filter" restore? How do I proceed at this point? The srb file is 69 kb, which is much larger than the 9 kb of some other accounts, suggesting that the filters are all there, but that the srb file is, somehow not being recognized. Any ideas on how to fix this? While I could just go and copy from computer B the srb file and bring it back to computer A, I added a couple of filters to the file on computer A and would like to keep them, since I don't exactly remember what I did. Thanks for any advice you might have. As an aside, I sent this note to the list on Friday, and received what I perceive is an automatically generated message from the list server that stated, somewhat cryptically: "The message's content type was not explicitly allowed." I am guessing that this is because I sent the message as html, rather than as pure text.If so, (1) why does the list server not support messages in html format?, and (2) may I suggest it might be more helpful to just state that the message failed to post because messages sent to the list must be in text format? That way, it is clear as to what a sender needs to do in order to ensure that the message is accepted. -- Avram Sacks, Skokie, IL using The Bat ver 7.1.1.8 on Win 7 Pro Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
copying filter rules from computer A to computer B
Hi, I run The Bat, separately, on two computers, both of which are connected via a local network. Each installation of the The Bat receives the same mail. I have a number of mail accounts running on The Bat. One account, which I use for all third party vendors, internet requests for an e-mail address, etc, filters all of its inbox mail into one of 25 different folders, some of which have dozens of rules. One has as many as 99! I don't want to have to laboriously copy each one, one by one to the other machine. Is there a way I can replace the filters rules for that account on computer B with the rules that are on computer A?Note that computer B is running Win 7 Home and The Bat ver 6.0.99. When I tried to upgrade it to ver 7, I nearly lost the database, the restore from a backup was only partially successful, so I am loathe to try upgrading a second time on that computer. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! Replying to messages with embedded jpeg files
Occasionally I wish to reply to a message that has, as its entire message, a jpeg file. Usually it is a flyer or announcement of some sort. However, when I hit reply, the body of the reply does not include the previously embedded jpeg file. This is a problem when the entire message to which I am replying is only a jpeg file. The Bat does not allow me to copy and paste an image. Instead, I have to save the image to a jpeg file, and then insert the jpeg file into the reply. Is there a way I can force The Bat to automatically include embedded jpeg files into any reply? Note that my reply template is in html, so there should be no issue with it being a text-only file. -- Avi Avram Sacks Using The Bat Prof. Ed. ver 5.3.8 on Win XP Pro sp3 Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

mass mailing using group name
Earlier this year I requested help in sending mass mailings that were customized with only the recipient's e-mail address appearing in the to field. Now, I wish to send a mass mailing in which only the group name appears in the to field. How is that done? I have the group, but when I put the group name in the to field, every recipient's e-mail address is placed in that field for the recipient to see. -- Avi Avram Sacks using TB ver 4.2.44.2 on Win XP pro sp3 Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Virtual Folders
I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how virtual folders work in The Bat. 1. For example, is it possible to set up a rule that copies every incoming message in a mail account to two folders: one folder based on some criteria, such as subject, mailing list, etc, and one folder that receives all messages. The latter folder would allow all messages that come in at one time to be more easily viewed that hunting for them among a couple dozen folders. 2. Is it possible to enable messages from many different mail accounts to be copied into the virtual folder? Of course, I could accomplish no. 1 by leaving them in the inbox and copying them as well into whatever folder I want to place them. But, this takes up double the disk space for each message. With a virtual folder, the message is stored only once, but is also seen by the virtual folder. Lotus Notes allows for this. How does it work in The Bat? I don't see a way to filter messages into a virtual folder. -- Avi Avram Sacks Using The Bat ver 4.2.44.2 on Win XP Pro SP3 Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
occasional filter failures + missing data
Hi, all, I use The Bat to manage 14 separate e-mail accounts that come, collectively, from three separate domain servers. Of those accounts, three--all of which are G-mail accounts--use filters to distribute mail into a number of subfolders. I have used these filters for years without incident. However, within the past 5-6 months, I have observed that a small number of messages for those accounts do not get filtered with each mail download and remain in an account's inbox until I use the re-filter tool to properly distribute those messages. In each case, the non-filtered messages belong in the last active folder (or folders) in the list of that account's folders. Clearly, there is nothing wrong with the filter: use of the re-filter tool ultimately results in proper distribution of the messages. Could the problem possibly be related to there only being 1.25 GB of useable free space remaining on the hard drive, or, is some other issue causing this problem? While the mail folder has a total of 10GB of data, the three mail accounts in question only have 677 MB, 710 MB, and 1.67 GB of data. Perhaps related to this problem is a secondary issue: the same folders into which some of the mail is not being filtered, display zero messages on the second computer on our home network. That computer is a 2-yr old laptop with lots of free space. Mail folders on that computer point to the mail folders on the primary computer for mail downloads. How can I fix this? -- Avram Sacks Using The Bat Ver. 4.2.44.2 on Win XP Pro SP3. Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Embedding jpeg image into mass mailing template
Hello Rick, I previously asked as to how I may insert a jpeg into the body of a mass mailing template and on Sunday, July 15, 2012, 12:47:08 PM, you wrote: R I JUST sent out a mass mailing - I dragged and dropped the JPG into R the template that was going out and it worked perfectly (Insert an R image will do it just as well. This is not happening for me. Here is what I do to send out a mass mailing: 1. open address book and highlight group to receive mass mailing 2. Click on file/mass mailing using template/[specific template file that has previously been created, let's call it X] 3. The Create Mass Mailing dialogue box opens up 4. With X highlighted in the drop down window, I click on Edit... 5. The Edit Template box for X opens up. At this point I tried to both drag and drop my jpeg into the Edit Template box as well as copy and paste. Neither works. When I try to drag and drop, the mouse icon turns into the international stop sign (circle with a line). What I CAN do is click on OK after the Create Mass Mailing dialogue box opens up which will automatically put all outgoing e-mails into the outbox and insert, one by one, the jpegs into these outgoing messages. But there will be about 150 and inserting the jpegs one by one will be very tedious. Could it be that what you are doing is only possible with the newer version of the The Bat? Embedding jpeg image into mass mailing template
Hi, I recently posted this query, but it was buried inside another thread and may have escaped notice, so I am re-posting to a new thread: I need to send an email that has an embedded jpeg to everyone in an address group. It is an invitation, that I created in MS Publisher and saved as a jpeg file. In a prior thread it was established that in order to send a mass mailing to an address book group so that individual recipients see only their own address in the to field and have individualized salutations, I needed to create a mass mailing template. However, I want that template to have as its body the salutation, followed by an image that is the jpeg file. In a regular message, I can just copy and paste the image, so long as I have the regular message set to HTML and not plain text. But, the mass mailing template appears to be text-only. How do I insert my jpeg invitation into the body of the mass mailing, so that when the message is opened by the recipient, the recipient sees the image of the invitation? Note, I do NOT wish to send the jpeg as an attachment. I understand how to do that. I want the message itself to display the jpeg image as part of the message. Can this be done with a mass mailing template? If so, how? -- Avi Avram Sacks Using TB ver 4.0.18 on Win XP Pro sp3 and Win7 home sp1 Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Once you explained that I could not use the template macro in a regular message and only within a template, it was easier for me to get this to work. This may be elementary, but if one doesn't regularly use macros and templates Now, I have another related problem: You wrote that I need to create the entire message as a Mass Mailing Template. Formatting margins when composing message
Is it possible to format a message in such a way as to prevent lines of text from extending the entire width of a wide screen? When composing a message as a text message, this is not an issue. The line is apparently limited to a certain number of characters. However, then composing in HTML or HTML/text, the line, on the screen, will extend the entire 24 inch width of the screen, which makes it difficult for the one writing the message to read. Is there a way, when composing in HTML or HTML/text, to limit the width of a line during composition? By the way, reducing the size of the window doesn't work, as it then necessitates use of the scroll bar at the bottom to see the entire line. Re: what are bat*.tmp files?
Hi, again. It seems like each answer prompts another question. This time, Jonathan Angliss [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Using a virus plugin will allow you to quarantine the mail withing TB! and actually look at the mail, but not execute/open any attachments. This is an advantage if you are after the actual email itself, and want to alert the real sender of infection (note that Klez and others spoof from headers, and if you set the virus scanner to auto-alert the person, you'll probably get a few upset replies). I thought I was already able to look at the mail because whenever I get the warning from the AV program, it says ...real-time protection has found that [filename] was infected with HTML.MimeExploit virus and has *restored the file.* (emphasis added), AND, I am able to find an e-mail in my in-box that has all the earmarks of it having carried a virus (unexpected attachments from unknown senders). I open these e-mails to add the sender's ISP to my filter list if the ISP looks bogus, such as where it's a random alphanumeric combination followed by .com, or some cutsy nomenclature like just4u.com but I don't open the attachments, which almost all invariably have the .exe extension. (I really like it that The Bat does NOT automatically open attachments.) Aren't these e-mails the ones that my AV software found infected, particularly since it has told me that it has restored the file? If so, then there really is no advantage to using plug-ins. No? Of course, if you're not too worried about seeing the content of these 'infected' files, and trust your virus scanner to make a valued judgement about the email (knowing that it only matches signatures, and doesn't care about content), then you can just stick with using an external virus scanner. How is eZTrust-AV matching signatures? What signatures is it matching, and with what? I don't use an address book, although I do have filters in The Bat for trash. But why should the AV software care about what filters I am using? Also, if I what I said above about the file being restored is correct, then it seems to me that the AV software is letting me make the decision about whether to dump the message or not.
