Welcome back.

Try Workspace / Windows Split Mode in the main menu. It gives you several
options. Is that what you mean?

Oops! Not a good idea!

Firstly, since TB has built-in *integration* with PGP v8.x, there's no
need for a plug-in. :-)

Secondly, PGP v6.5.8 does not have some of the vulnerability fixes
that are included in v8.x, so unless there's a really good reason why
you can't use v8.x, it's usually best to use the latest version.

With a program like PGP, deciding whether or not to use the latest
version is not just about features...it's often about having the
latest security fixes as well.

 can't get it to work.

That is peculiar, as it does work as expected here.

 Encrypting/signing/decryption all work.
When I decrypt PGP wants to save to file.
Real integration would be that it replaces the encrypted text with
the plain text. Without loosing quotes/formatting etc.

As I just said above, PGP v8 integration does work as expected here.
I have no idea why it's asking you to save to file. Are you trying
to use the PGP options from PGPtray when you're using TB!? Or are
you actually using the integration? There is a difference in how
these work.

BTW as long as it works and handles modern ciphers it doesn't matter
 if it's PGP/OpenPGP/GPG/...

I use both PGP and GnuPG on my computer. Let's get one thing sorted
out here. *Both* PGP and GnuPG are based on the standard called
OpenPGP (and so is Hushmail...with Phil Zimmermann's help).
OpenPGP is not any sort of separate application beyond PGP and
GnuPG...it's merely the standard both are based upon.

I wrote:

MR With a program like PGP, deciding whether or not to use the latest
MR version is not just about features...it's often about having the
MR latest security fixes as well.

Then you replied:

 Tell that on alt.security.pgp :-)
Many there will not agree with you.

And many others there will agree with me. :-) I haven't had much time
lately to visit alt.security.pgp, but I've been a regular there for
several years. There are indeed those who will continue to prefer the
old 2.x versions, and again, those who mistrust any version after Phil
Zimmermann left NAI (then NAI subsequently sold PGP to PGP
Corporation), but I feel differently about these issues; as do
several other experienced PGP/GnuPG users (including many regular
participants at alt.security.pgp).

Most end-users of PGP are not capable of evaluating the source code of
PGP, so they still have to trust someone...or at least trust the idea
that if the source code is available for peer review, someone is out
there pouring over it, and will let the rest of us know if/when they
find any problems (vulnerabilities, backdoors, etc.). The people who
formed the new PGP Corporation are actually the more trustworthy of
the former NAI employees who worked on PGP. I've corresponded over the
years with Phil Zimmermann and a few of the current PGP Corporation
people (while they were at NAI, and also after they formed PGP
Corporation) enough to feel I can trust in their intentions with
regards to PGP's trustworthiness.

For someone like myself, who couldn't tell the difference between a
backdoor and a bathtub if I were to look at the source code, I
need to find other ways to trust the code; and I feel I've done all
I can to assure myself that it's okay for me to use.

If we want to continue this aspect of the discussion, perhaps we
should move it to TBOT before the fish start flying. :-)

Allie's suggestion is, of course, the first essential setting to
enable. After that, you can either use the PGP related macros in
templates (for customizing how PGP deals with certain recipients by
default), and/or use the Privacy menu options on-the-fly from the

Aside from these basic options and settings, I couldn't find any

Early versions of The Bat! acted just like this -- during decryption,
decrypted version of message was created. Then user could choose
either delete encrypted message and keep decrypted or read decrypted
message and delete it leaving encrypted message.

Unfortunately now The Bat! just shows decrypted message in a window
and when you close the window -- decrypted message is done. That's
very inconvenient in my point of view, especially because The Bat! does
not automatically decrypt messages in preview pane and it's not
possible to perform search on encrypted messages...

I really liked that old behaviour It would be grate that it would be
re-introduced in future versions.

You can reply to the decrypted version that shows in another tab upon

However, you cannot save the decrypted version. An unfortunate loss of

I'm overlooking ways to filter on any part of the full header. I
 hope :P

It would seem that you're using only the fast creation of filters
feature. If you open the filters panel by hitting Shift+CTRL+S, you'll
now have the full-blown panel with all filtering features at your
disposal. It's indeed very powerful.

In an old FAQ (pdf file) there is an interview with one of the TB!
programmers. A Newsgroup plug in is mentioned in that interview. But
on the site no info can be found about it. Please enlight me! :D

I don't know if they have this planned for anytime soon, but then
there's then, as Thomas says, there's MyGate.

 --- Misc ---
Are there any newbie sites with things like:
 - plug ins

There's no formal collection that I know of.

 - scripts
 - templates

There's the template repository.

Using automatic periodical checking, nothing happens *unless* you

best setting for opportunistic mail fetch.

Using manual checking, TB connects, checks mail and (if enabled to

Here are some of *my* concerns...

I have a cable (ethernet) connection, and by default, it's always
on...24/7/365.

If, for any reason, I want to work offline with TB!, I have three
choices (plus a fourth not-by-choice situation):

1) Go to each account (10 of them), one at a time, and manually
disable periodic mail polling (then, when I want to go back to
online mode, I have to go back and reverse the the process for
   all 10 accounts individually.

2) Stop *all* traffic with my firewall (including live chess servers,
web browser, news client, etc. This can be inconvenient if TB! is
the only application I want to deal with offline for the moment.

3) Unplug the cable (same effect/inconvenience of the firewall
   solution.

4) This last one is more frequent here in Winter, but can happen at
any time. My ISP may have a problem, and my connection(s) are cut
off for a period of time (I also have a backup dial-up, in case
something happens with the cable, and at times, both of these will
not work). Here again, I'm faced with either frequent annoying
beeps, or I have to go through each account and disable/enable
   periodic checking.

Solution 1 is not very elegant, nor are 2 and 3 for their own reasons.
Finally, since I don't really want to disable entirely the error
beep sound system wide, every five minutes or so I'm treated to a
staggered series of 10 such annoying error beeps.

The primary reasons I may want to work offline with TB! for a bit is
either when I'm making a TB! backup or if I'm playing with/changing
some settings that might be affected by connection issues. Since I
don't know exactly what to expect if new email is downloading while
the backup is in progress, I prefer to simply be offline during this
procedure. This way, I know exactly where the cut-off line is
between the backup and when I begin to receive new mail again.

It seems to me a perfectly reasonable solution - for both DUN users
who might pay for their connections by the hour or for ethernet users
with a particular reason for wanting an offline option, to have a
simple on/off toggle switch for the periodic mail polling.

If David does not use DUN, then that is a way to disable or set

periodical mail checking already selected. Then, to go back on-line,
change from DUN back to LAN.

I haven't tested it but should work.

MR That seems a rather flippant remark considering that some of us may
MR find a use for working *with* TB! while in an offline mode.

Well it wasn't meant to be. I just find it strange that someone with
an Always on connection would want to turn it off. I've had an
always on connection for over a year, TB! is always running and wether
I'm reading, writing or just browsing through my mail, auto mail
collection doesn't get in that way. All that happens is the ticker
appears top of the screen.

If it does get in the way of other activities I just close TB! down.
For example if I'm grabbing digital video, auto mail collection can
cause lost frames for the split second it takes to collect the mail.

MR In any event, why not offer us a simple toggle switch?

Maybe they're thinking the way I am. I see no reason whatsoever to
suspend auto mail collection unless it gets in the way of another
application. There is no cost issue with BB. If you have no programs
at all running it is still on If it does get in the way, just close
it. If your working with TB! then auto mail polling can be made
completely transparent other than new unread mail appearing every now
and again. It needn't interrupt what your doing at the time.

I believe you mentioned making backups? How hard is it to make your
backup in between mail collection times? I personally don't use the in
built backup facility. I use Januks .bat file to back the registry up
and Winrar to zip the whole folder up... And I have to shut TB! down
to do that. Takes a minute at most and my auto times are 5 minutes
apart. TB! doesn't even know it's been done :)

With a dial up you pay by the minute and so the ability to auto
disconnect makes financial sense. With BB, you pay a fixed price per
month wether you use it or not.

JBL Maybe NTL's mail servers are more reliable than Pipex's

I can honestly say in the past year I've had no trouble at all with
NTL for any reason. It used to take about 10 to 15 minutes to obtain a
an IP via DHCP first thing in the morning. Chap on the phone said
don't unplug the modem at bed time. I've had no trouble since.

JBL It is very irritating when TB! dings (or whatever your error sound is)
JBL every few minutes when there is a problem with mail collection.

Just turn the sounds off. As far as I know, no error boxes pop up
(I've never seen one but I don't use Pipex :) just the odd entry in
the log.

Like I said before, I carry on using TB! regardless. The most that
happens here is I get new unread mail appearing. It's just happened
while I'm writing this but it's in the background and didn't interfere
with what I was doing in any way.

Maybe a change of ISP with a more reliable mail server would help in
cutting down on the errors. I personally don't think it's a Bat issue
but then, maybe I use mine different to you.

firewall or unplug the cable (with these though, TB! still tries to
check...giving me those annoying unsuccessful beeps). I've not found
a convenient way to pause all TB! polling, but a one-click (and/or
keyboard shortcut) solution would be really nice for this.

I would especially appreciate something like this for when I'm
performing a backup (Tools/Backup...). By the way...what *does* happen
if new mail is downloading while I'm making a backup?

 Hello TBUDL,

I, too, cannot think of a solution to this problem, however I would
recommend that you have all your accounts checked within the same time
interval. This should at least prevent the connection center from
popping up every now and then, but only after the amount of time you
specified. Then you could maybe specify a rather large interval
for each account, say an hour or so, and you will know exactly how
much time you have got for reading your messages in peace. If you
want to check for new messages before the hour has passed, you can
still press Alt-F2, right?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but this is how I handled it in the
past when I didn't have DSL cable yet.

But, there are still some flaw. To see the attachment, TB still dont
display some character well. And I use the Plain Tex(windows) editor,
it's unable to auto-wrap chinese characters. What's more, TB cannot
 handle korean characters.

I don't know about Korean characters, but TB's lack of being able to
wrap/reflow Chinese characters is a major drawback. Yuki also reports
problems with Japanese. Full DBCS support has been promised for the
near future.

In html mode, TB add some square in the mail. Apparently, TB's html
viewer isn't compatible with asian charset

Squares usually appear over here when the font type does not support
the character used. Try changing the font for the HTML viewer in
Options / Preferences / Viewer / Viewer. The latter should say HTML
Viewer instead of just Viewer, BTW.

I haven't experienced problems, but that may be because I haven't
experienced a power failure for a long time. Where are you located?

Top posting is actually against list rules.

We encourage nested posting, i.e., put your comments below each part of

the TB! version you're using does not offer to create.
And even _if_ you'd send a HTML formatted you still could not
_enforce_ a special font being used, only recommend.
So as HTML is bloat when used in e-mail and the result is,
technically, unpredictable there is no need for you to change the
  font :-)
- Font used in your editor when creating the mail, only for you
wanting to look the text nicer? Options / Editor Preferences /
  Display - Font.
But you can only choose from a list of fixed fonts, that's how
  TB! works (yet).

S 3. I'm assuming you can't use stationary w/The Bat!

If you think about 'stationary' as 'HTML template used for new mail'
than: yes, you can't.
If you think about 'stationary' as 'template in general, even without
HTML crap', than: no, you're wrong. The template system in TB! is one
of the best.

S 4. I am clueless to Macro's. so I could use some help in making one for a
S signature line please!

You can't make a 'macro', they're fixed. Macros are the commands
that let you access several fixed and variable values and therefore
build dynamic templates.

Open Account / Properties / Templates / New.

Delete everything in the text field on the right, click OK.
Reopen the New template, the default template should be shown.
%Cursor is where the cursor is placed when creating a new message,
%TOFName is replaces by the recipients first name automatically;
%FromFName by your first name (as given in account information) and so
on.
Click the 'Macro' button at bottom to see a list of (some) available
macros and a short description about they meaning beneath the macro
names.
Change the template to fit your need, I'd suggest small steps and
'Trial and Error' to see results of your changes.

If you have any concrete questions, e.g. I want a new message to look
this and this and the recipients shoe size automatically entered
here simply ask back here, describing your problem as much detailed
and specific as possible.

Not likely! That is a Eudora proprietary feature and us TB readers
won't see it that way...

Oh yes, and please reread the list rules about trimming replies.

I hit the reply button on the little tool bar, the icon that says
reply, but it doesn't quote the e-mail at all, just comes up
 blank.

This would be because at some point your default reply template has
become blank instead of containing the standard reply template. The
only way to restore these is to create a new account (dummy out the
details) and pinch the correct contents for the account default
reply template from there... unless you are using folder templates
or address book templates (for the specific address to which you are
replying) and that's where it has become blank.

A typical reply template will at least invoke the macro %QUOTES to
include the quoted original message text.

Put it into a Quick Template and give it a simple handle. Add the

You need to spend some time reading this page:

The new message, reply and forward templates offer you the ability to
put text in your messages before you actually type anything. You can put
anything you like, for example a signature or the previous messages text
quoted. The real power in templates lies with it's macros. Macros may be
used to extract information that varies from message to message, such as
the message dates, sender information etc.

Read the article to see the scope of what templates will do for you and
then you'll start understanding what we're trying to show you.

I use filters posted by Marcus Ohlström, you can find them in the
archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg36630.html

BTW You started your question as an answer to another thread. That's
not the best thing to do for the following reason.

The Bat is able to thread messages properly, in order to see what I
mean, just select the folder where you're storing the messages from
this list. Go to the menu: view - view threads by - references. Now
you'll see that all messages are lined up after the message to which
they're first, second (or whatever) level replies to.

You started what's essentially a new thread by replying to another
message. That means it shows up as listed in another thread. Since
people sometimes skip messages in threads they don't consider
interesting (for lack of time). They might skip your message too,
since they're not aware of the newly started thread. So next time
you'd do yourself a favor by sending a new message in stead of a
reply, because you're reaching a larger audience and one of those
might have the answer you've been waiting for.

This is not not meant to criticize you, but only to help you
appreciate the options TB offers and to be able to get more effect out

Not in TB. TB uses the file associations you've defined for Windows.
In order to associate a file type, you try open a file in the explorer
when there's no association, you get to choose a program and the
possibility to use that program always for this type (check-box).
After you've done that TB will use that program to open that file
type. It might be possible that you need to close and restart TB
before it figures that you've associated the file type.
On my system *.log is associated with notepad and that's what TB uses.

UZ On my system TheBat! does not open any external viewer when I try
UZ to double click on attached .log files, instead I first get the
UZ warning that these files can contain viruses

You can disable this warning in:
Options - Preferences - Warnings - Add *.LOG to 'Enable opening of these file
without any alert'

UZ (it's pure ASCII and a non-macro text editor is associated with the files in
UZ Windows) and when I insist on opening the file I get the error message
UZ that the application for these files was not found...

That's the part I mentioned about Windows file associations.

If the text file has a .txt extension then TB! will display it via
tabbed separate window unless the .txt file is very large. I don't
know the size limit. It just displayed a 100KB text file for me in
its own tab. But I had tested a 6.8MB text file the other day and it
didn't display it in its own tabbed window.

If the text file has other extensions then you'll have to open it
with the associated application by double clicking on the

TB! uses the systems associated application. Therefore, if the log
file is not being opened, it's because there's something wrong with
.log file associations on your system. Do you have .log files
associated with your text editor?

Also for text file extensions, you can disable the antivirus popup
warning by going into Options/Preferences/Warnings. Add .log
extension to the list of extensions that are opened without warning.

I do get a tabbed window (as you call it) for *.txt attachments but
not for *.log. I don't think there is any way of telling TB to use a
tabbed window for *.log attachments.

If you don't want to get the warning for *.log, go to Options -
Preferences - Warnings and include *.log in the Enable opening of these
files without any alert window.

In my system (Win2000) I have *.txt and *.log files associated with
TexPad (my preferred text editor) and it opens just fine when I double
click on a *.txt or *.log attachment.

ACM TB! uses the systems associated application. Therefore, if the log

ACM .log file associations on your system. Do you have .log files
ACM associated with your text editor?

LOG-files have always been associated with my text editor WinEDT. This works nicely
in Windows Explorer, the LOG file shows the corresponding icon and if
WinEDT is running, the file is opened within the running instance of
the program, when WinEDT is not running, the program is launched and
the LOG file displayed.
However in TheBat! I get the Windows flag as icon for LOG files and
the above mentioned error message persists.

Thanks for showing me how to disable the warning, now it's only the
error message which is left.

Hmmm. Interesting.

I have TextPad associated with .log files and don't get this error.
TB! doesn't really have any control over which application opens
attachment filetypes that aren't supported by it's internal viewer.

It usually just uses the system associated application.

I have WinEdt installed here and am trying to get it to associate it
with .log files. I can't seem to. Notepad opens the file instead,
even though I manually created the association in the Windows
filetypes.

I then switched the association back to textpad ... textpad opens

I agree that in this case the problem is either WinEdt or Windows

where one could tell TB! for certain MIME attachments to handle them
in a certain way by default. For a program as configurable as TB! this
would IMHO fit into the concept of the program.

It also/alternatively would be nice to (optionally) have a tabbed page
for the full header and/or message source. I know how to access these
now, but again, I think this would make a nice addition to the
program.

Is there by any chance a possibility to switch the language of the
predefined macros, such as %odate on the fly or on an account basis?
Since I use the program for messages in at least three languages, this
really would be nice
Switching the spell checking with the
%language macro is a very nice feature in this respect...

I don't think so. Complex macros have been created to do this

they aren't. Someone on the list should have an example. Hopefully

Yes I have, but as a newbie to TB! I first want to make sure that
a feature is not already there and I'm just too damn stupid to find
it. And then I personally prefer to hear others' ideas/considerations
before going to ask for new features.
That's the way things are handled for ThumbsPlus, where suggestions
are directly placed into an open discussion group

UZ Is there by any chance a possibility to switch the language of
UZ the predefined macros, such as %odate on the fly or on an
UZ account basis?

ACM I don't think so. Complex macros have been created to do this
ACM translation. I thought they would be in the macro repository but
ACM they aren't. Someone on the list should have an example. Hopefully
ACM one will chip in. If not, you could post this to TBTECH where regex
ACM macros are often discussed.

I found a way around it: the ISO date should do for all my
purposes ;-}
However, the fact that the output of the %odate macro can be
influenced by a command string is not directly described in the
help nor in the FAQs

The feature request site is actually pretty interesting. It lists
all the requests that have been made. It's actually the same site
that you submit bug reports. You also have to subscribe to it to get
posting privileges.

When you log-on, just select 'The Bat Wishes' from the switch list in
the right upper corner of the page.

Yes. We do this here as well, so making your suggestion to the list

at all, so I was pointing you to where your suggestion would be read
by them, as well as where you can browse other suggestions made. :)

There's a lot about this program that isn't directly documented.

As a small point, although it is kind of you to notify the infected person of
the virus, in more recent cases, the sender (From field) is not who they claim
to be. Take Klez for example, it spoofs the from field based on addresses in
the infected users address book, along with things it finds in the internet

 2. Can The Bat! compose HTML emails and if so where is the option because I

No, although there are rumours of it being put into version 2.

You can do an export of your Palm AB to vCard, then import it to TBab.

Hmm, thanks for the answer. However, I'd prefer not to step backwards

However, perhaps this leans towards a solution where I can synchronise

I will need to continue using Outlook for Calendar and tasks anyway

Erm... when composing a message, Spell Checker - Language - Select the
