Are you sure it wasn't 3-Fingers? That's the Meador Pincher I remember. You had
to go down through that to get to the Hall of the Fiery Cave God as I recall.
Andy would know. I don't recall if Tom was ever in the Guadalupe Room. The
"pincher" just off the main commercial trail was Matlock's Pinch.

Jim,
Thanks for remembering Tom!

I must say that I have always been disappointed that no one has named a cave
or portion of a cave after Tom.

Perhaps it might be appropriate to name some feature of Ft. Stanton's Snowy
River after Tom. It may be Snowy River but it is also a river of milk ...
and where else would you expect to see Tom.

Joel Tom Meador would often chug-a-lug a whole gallon of milk (his
favorite beverage) at camp.

He was quite a historian, too, and spent many an hour researching
cave history in courthouses and library archives.

He loved the Guads, pushing his 4wd vehicle to the limits (once
overturned it when he hit a cow out on Hwy 137),

and was a delight to be around.

Mighty Tom was way too young when he left us.

Known to some of us as "Tommy Door", we'll always keep him in our

I remember having a meal with Tom, and asking him some details about
his ranch in Eldorado. When I asked him about the size of his ranch,
he told me had seven square Sections.

2013-04-03 Thread Michael Lorimer
One cold winter's evening in 1975 or was it 1976,
the Las Cruces crowd from the Mesilla Valley
Grotto were hanging out in my 1973 gas guzzling
Dodge Tradesman van drinking beer. Tom asked to
join us. Of course, he was welcomed and he climbed
in and sat down behind the driver's seat. As
host, I asked him if he would like a beer. Sadly,
he shook his large head and said, "No." Then I
had an inspiration, "Tom, would you like a milk?"
His eyes lit up and his mouth grew wide in a broad
smile of anticipation and he gratefully replied,
"Yes. I would like a milk." I went out into the
cold and rustled around in the cooler until I
found it. I had remembered that we had brought
with us a 4 ounce carton of milk. As I made my
way to return to the van, I remembered that Tom
used to down a whole gallon of milk for breakfast
and I was afraid that my meager offering wouldn't
be enough to satisfy him. When I returned to the
warmth of the van, I placed that tiny vessel of
milk in Tom's large outstretched hands. He was as
pleased as if I had given him a whole gallon and
he nursed that Lilliputian carton of milk for the
rest of the evening as we laughed, talked about
caving and our wonderful underground adventures.
I do miss him.

Memories of Tom Meador

I remember racing up Three Mile Hill,
Wondering if Tom's Jeep would fall apart
Before we reached the top.
Then, on the ride back down,
The brakes went out, and I wondered
If the Jeep would ever stop.

I remember, too, his giant form
Around an evening campfire,
Drinking milk from a half-gallon jug,
The peculiar laugh of a gentle man
Who loved the mountain caves
Just as much as I do.

He was different from the rest of us,
But maybe that wasn't so odd
Among a group of folks
Who all seem to thrive on being different.
But he was more different than most,
A foil, perhaps, of nature's practical jokes.

And if you happen to be on High Lonesome
In the early morning mist,
And you see a giant shadow with an old slouch hat
And Jesus boots, shuffling along the ridge,
You'll know who it is. It's Tom, wandering again,
Searching through the mountains, free at last.

[Texascavers] New Pope

2013-04-03 Thread BMorgan994
Someone recently sent out a request for cave jokes, but this is not a joke.

The Weazel just celebrated his 65th which was coincident with the ascension
of Pope Weazelicus LXV to the throne of St. Peter.

The rites lasted for four days and included not only the issuance of a
papal bull, but also the ravishing of the nuns, the burning of the witches, the
sacrifice of a naked goddess whose abdomen was ripped open by owls, and
the crushing defeat of the Man of Science by the Forces of Darkness. Needless
to say there were caves with nubile maidens. All of this has been
lavishly documented, though the identities of the nuns and police officers
have
been redacted.

The Weazel did not invite his many friends from either TAG or Texas, nor
did he submit the final report entitled Habemas Papam. This was not for lack
of love for his children but simply that this primitive list does not allow
the posting of material that might be considered questionable by those who
are not of the faith.

Therefore be it known that those who wish to be appraised of the secret
rites of the Holy See may submit their request to the Pope either on this
list or privately and their wish will be granted. Much but not all will be
revealed.

The brakes went out, and I wondered
If the Jeep would ever stop.

I remember, too, his giant form
Around an evening campfire,
Drinking milk from a half-gallon jug,
The peculiar laugh of a gentle man
Who loved the mountain caves
Just as much as I do.

He was different from the rest of us,
But maybe that wasn't so odd
Among a group of folks
Who all seem the thrive on being different.
But was more different than most,
A foil, perhaps, of nature's practical jokes.

And if you happen to be on High Lonesome
In the early morning mist,
And you see a giant shadow with an old slouch hat
And Jesus boots, shuffling along the ridge,
You'll know who it is. It's Tom, wandering again,
Searching through the mountains, free at last.

Those of you who remember Tom Meador, he would have been 70 today.

Those of you who did not know him, you missed a special friend.

Those of you who remember Tom Meador, he would have been 70 today.

Those of you who did not know him, you missed a special friend.
