Re: [tw5] Re: How do I use GitHub Saver?

It worked.
I didn't provide access to 'create gist' with creating my Github PAT.
Now it's working fine, and I am using something called
https://kebifurai.github.io/TiddlyResearch/
The only issue is it keeps giving XMLHttpRequest error code: 409, as
autosave happens too frequently (i think)

2020-10-30 Thread Tiddly Novice
TiddlyDesktop seems to be working, though I had a brief moment of panic
when it didn't seem able to save. Turned out that it can't save if I use
the wiki html files generated by twexe. I guess because they're for older
versions? I haven't tested if the Json editor works on the newer version of
TW I'm using, but since it isn't getting updated I guess there wouldn't be
much point. But I'm not sure I've found examples for how to use the json
mangler like I was hoping to use the json editor. Should I start a new
conversation to ask for guidance on that?

[tw5] Re: Clipper within tiddlywiki to create streams tiddlers

2020-10-30 Thread TW Tones
arun,

If you are using the standard editor you can create a button to copy a
selection to the clipboard and or a tiddler. However unless there is a way
to make such a copy function available on top of say viewing a PDF that is
another story and beyond my skills, however it will copy to the clipboard.

Perhaps what you need here is a way to paste from the clipboard into a
Stream, perhaps even a selected stream?

This would then work for inserting content from anywhere.

[tw5] Re: Autoclose feature. Max 10 recent open tiddlers.

2020-10-30 Thread TW Tones
Shareda,

I tend not to need what you are asking for because I close unwanted
tiddlers, use close others or close all as needed.

However I can see how this may be useful. I have also made a tools to track
the current sessions history.

In this case you are asking that on opening one tiddler it closes another.
For this reason I suggest creating a button to do the opening and use that
to open tiddlers and simultaneously close the "excess tiddler". You can use
the link catcher to capture the name of the tiddler to open, then use its
actions parameter to trigger open tiddler and the close.

Lets assume you are happy to use the story list this solution works, but
since it will itself be closed I have put it in the sidebar

Tag with $:/tags/SideBar
\define close-tiddler-action(tiddlername)
<$set name=tiddlername value="$(currentTiddler)$" emptyValue=<<
currentTiddler>> >
<$action-sendmessage $message="tm-close-tiddler" $param="SampleWizard"/>

\end
\define open-close-behind()
<$list filter="[enlist{$:/StoryList!!list}nth[3]]">
<$action-sendmessage $message="tm-close-tiddler" $param=<>/>

<$action-navigate $to=<>/>
\end

$:/temp/last-opened=<$link to={{$:/temp/last-opened}}/>

<$linkcatcher to="$:/temp/last-opened" actions=<> >
{{TableOfContents}}

Note:

   - for testing this closes the third, alter nth(3] to nth[10]
   - The close-tiddler-action definition is not in use

Tones

[tw5] Clipper within tiddlywiki to create streams tiddlers

2020-10-30 Thread arun babu
I have embedded pdf/web versions of various articles within tiddlers of my
tiddlywiki file. I was thinking of making notes from these articles within
my tiddlywiki file itself.

Is there any way to clip sentences which i find interesting from these
articles and directly make them into streams tiddlers. For example a small
pop up called "add to tiddler" come up when ever I select a text to create
a streams tiddler using that text. Is there any way to do this.

I have used tiddlyclip plug in, but its not working with streams plug in (I
mean clipped sentences form a regular tiddler, not a stream tiddler). Its
too much time consuming to make streams tiddlers by "cut pasting".from that
regular tiddler which has the clipped content. Is there anyway to make the
tiddlyclip plug in work with streams.

In my GitHub Saver setup, I used the following:

Username = myusername
Personal Access Token = long alpha-numeric sequence
Target Repository = myusername/myusername.github.com
Target branch for saving = master
Path to target file = foldername
Filename of target file = index.html
Server API URL = https://api.github.com

Note that the Path to target file does NOT include leading or trailing

If you are still using TWClassic, then the "create a link, right click,

Don't use the "Save Page As..." command! This saves the currently loaded
file which, because of the dynamic nature of TiddlyWiki, can be *different*
from the file stored on the server. Use the steps I outlined, where you
create a *link* with the URL for the current HTML file, and then use RIGHT
CLICK on that link to get a popup menu. Then select "Save LINK as..." to
download that URL, without loading it into the browser.

The "Save Page As..." option in the Firefox "File" pull-down menu not only

2020-10-30 Thread Sean Boyle
Hi Victor,
Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I tried out PlantUML (nice sequence diagram, btw). I don't know if it
is still that way, but it used to be that the drawing was pushed to an
internet server for processing. I'm more interested in something which is
self-contained, especially since some of my diagrams could be considered
sensitive, but in general I like self-contained solutions. Some others
which I have tried out are:
* Mermaid
* Graphviz
* Railroad
* Tidgraph
* edit in an external tool, render, and import the SVG (usually yEd)

You have a very nice service with TiddlySpot and I would not mind to pay a
reasonable fee to help maintaining and developing it.

André de Carvalho

PS: Continuing the "not a lawyer..." before I got hooked on software I did
studied Law up to the 4th year in a 5 year course in Coimbra University ;)
The facts are :
- that if DreamHost didn't provide Simon and Daniel access to the
DreamObject they would become "Controllers" of the information
- the information contains personal data of mine (name, e-mail, personal
thoughts, opinions and facts)
- Article 15 (

transnational facts, ...) Preamble (23) extends controller obligations to
non EU entities

I would not say this is the worst case I saw but in fact I didn't
studied it properly...

Just saying... not trying to start any flame here especially with guys from

2020-10-30 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
This is just a guess, but I would try loading index.html or any file via
the Github interface to your target directory (either / or /wiki/) . It
might be that until you make the first entry in github there is no there

 Ciao Sean

I agree that Mermaid for TiddlyWiki is good. Its simple plain text
syntax is excellent and fits TW editing style very well.

Regarding the non-printability. That is a known issue with that type of
graphic rendering. I'm not sure that its easily fixable. The way I get
round it if I need to print a Mermaid diagram is to take a screen capture
save as a file and link to that image in the TW. Its too laborious a
 method
for other than occasional use, but a work-around for limited cases.

You are right: looks like its been basically abandoned. Part of the
issue is I think the author probably concluded that no one was interested.
He has other good graphic tools that equally haven't got much notice.

As far as I can see it needs a bit of tweeking -- one issue I sometimes
encountered was getting the text to fit properly. But the core is there
 and
 functional.

As far as getting the plugin revised. I dunno. I don't have skill for
that. Its a good tool so maybe in time interest to revisit it will grow?

 Best wishes
 Josiah

[tw5] Re: so: personal DreamHost for TW users?

2020-10-30 Thread Jed Carty
It isn't ready yet, but my plan is to get the secure server version of Bob
set up as something like an alternative to tiddlyspot.
There is a lot of work to do before it is ready for public use. My brother
and I have been using it for Ooktech work for over a year, but we are able
to set everything up manually.

The main problem is that I need to update the login part and that there
isn't any UI for adding new accounts or setting up access controls to
individual wikis.

Another problem is that I have no desire to manage a system like that. I
think that it would work best as a community project that takes donations
to cover server costs and maybe paying a person/some people to spend a few
hours a month doing maintenance.

I don't know if it would fill exactly the same need as tiddlyspot, but it
could help if there is interest.

[tw5] Re: Concerns from a non-tech newbie

2020-10-30 Thread Keelan Cook
Ivan,

It sounds like we're in a very similar boat. I work in academics, and I've
recently started using TiddlyWiki for its strengths in networked thought
and open source nature. I know very little about coding, so I've had many
of the same questions you're asking. Currently, I'm using a single-file
wiki (not a node version with individual files), and it's working very well
for me at this point.

My primary use case is academic research. In specific collecting notes on
research and then connecting and compiling those notes in a way that allows
me to outline, draft, and eventually write up new scholarship. That means
tons of notes and specifically a mountain of PDFs. I have found TiddlyWiki
to be excellent at connecting, compiling, outlining, and even drafting. I
then export my finished articles to another tool for printing or publishing.

I believe your notes are more future-proof in a TiddlyWiki than they are in
most other note-taking tools. It's been mentioned in other comments so far,
but an HTML file is essentially a text file than can be human readable even
if the unthinkable happened and there was a wholesale shift away from
browsers reading HTML to render websites. Futhermore, it really seems
unthinkable for HTML and browsers that read it to go away. From my limited
understanding they appear to be the backbone of the (frontend of the)
internet. I use a Chromebook personally and more and more it seems
computers are really just gateways to connect us to the internet to do
everything. So, I think we're safe with HTML documents for a very long time.

As for PDFs, this is a real concern you need to consider. It's been said
above already, but you don't want to store the PDFs in the wiki itself. I
have several thousand notes in my single-file wiki currently, and it runs
just fine. But, none of those notes are embedded images and files, and I
did that on purpose based on the wise counsel of this group. Instead, I've
chosen to use a reference manager to house my PDF files and link to them or
reference them by citation. It works well for me, and it keeps the wiki
running smooth. I use Paperpile as my reference
manager. It indexes all of my PDF articles and any books or other sources I
use in my research. It also has it's own PDF annotation tools, so I read
and annotate my PDFs in Paperpile and then export any notes I want to make
more "permanent" in my research to TiddlyWiki. I upload the PDF to
Paperpile and it stores it in my Google Drive, so I still maintain control
of the actual file. This also creates a shareable link to the PDF itself.
You can link to the file that way in TiddlyWiki.

In addition, I use two plugins that facilitate this process. The first is
the bibtex plugin you can find in the main plugin library for TiddlyWiki.
It allows you to export a bibtex (bibliography file) from your reference
manager and upload it to TiddlyWiki in a way that parses out all of the
sources and creates a reference tiddler for every book or article. Then, I
use the refnotes plugin to easily cite
these sources in my other notes. The refnotes plugin works in the
background to compile a works cited for projects I'm drafting and allows me
to easily cite references on my notes so I know where they originated.

Paperpile is not the only reference manager out there. Zotero
 and Mendeley are
probably the two most popular, and they share most of this functionality I
just mentioned. But I really like the combined ability of using a good
reference manager with the power of TiddlyWiki.

Hope that helps you think through options some. I've spent the better part
of this year thinking through all of this myself, and this is where I
landed.

Good luck!

[tw5] Autoclose feature. Max 10 recent open tiddlers.

2020-10-30 Thread Shareda
Hello! Maybe someone knows some plugin doing something like this. If there
are 10 tiddlers already open then the first one is closed automatically
when navigating to the 11th one.

As I understand there should be navigate history and the navigate event to
do that.
Now I found the LinkCatcherWidget. But I'm not sure where I can get the
list of recent navigations. Does anyone know that? Or how i can get that
list from

If I get it then I plan to
1. Place the LinkCatcherWidget to the PageTemplate with
2. Filter [rest[10]] tiddlers
3. Apply WidgetMessage: tm-close-tiddler.

Is this a good plan?

That would be super great to forget about finding and closing old tiddlers.

Prior to the recent TiddlySpot crisis, the normal way to download a copy of
your TiddlySpot
was to go to http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com/download

However, the download link is not currently available.

As a work-around:

1) open your TiddlySpot (e.g., http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com)
2) create a new tiddler containing:
[[click me|http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com]]
3) *right click* on the "click me" link that is displayed
4) Choose "Save link as..."
5) If your browser is set to "always ask where to save", then you can
choose a local folder and enter a destination filename

Note that "save link as..." is not the same function as "save as..."

[tw5] What is the science of thinking?

2020-10-30 Thread bimlas
I apologize for writing to the group lately on philosophical topics, but a
note-taking software isn’t worth much if the notes in it aren’t effective
enough. I try to understand the process of thinking and adapt the workflow
to it as needed, either by writing new plugins or by making more useful use
of existing options.

With Zettelkasten, I understood why it is important to create a second
brain, and the book Sonke Ahrens: How to Take Smart Notes highlighted that
it is not only important but essential because we are thinking through
writing. He talked a lot about how the brain works, how we can regulate
ourselves, why rules and consistency are important.

Bret Victor’s almost every performance, but most of all Inventing on
Principle , made me understand that in order to
create something radically new, you have to completely forget what you
currently know about the world (it is a must-see for any philosophical
person, even if the basic topic is software development). Dare to think
freely, as this was done by all those who ultimately changed the world
(e.g., Einstein kicked Newton in the ass).

These encouraged me to think about the process of thinking itself. Is there
a science of thoughts? Would that be the philosophy?

Can similar rules be drawn on thoughts as well, e.g. mathematical formulas,
or program design patterns. Is it possible to standardize the way of
thinking even with formulas? Is it possible to refactor thoughts? Can they
be grouped (as integers, irrational numbers, etc.)?

Can thoughts be measurable, can they be quantified? Do thoughts have
properties (such as time, importance of tasks)? If so, mathematical
formulas can be used on them, they can be represented with a UML diagram,
they can be arranged in a row, set theory can be applied on them.

I don’t think I’m the first to come up with these thoughts, so I’m asking
you scientists what the name of this science is?

2020-10-30 Thread Hiran Venugopalan

In fact I tried adding things to some TWs, (like the official one) to know
it works and got this idea !
This is gold! The more I read and do testing of TW, I undertand how
stunning this product is!

By default, when your TiddlyWiki document is posted on-line anyone can read
it, and they can edit it, and download it (with any changes they've made),
but they can't *save* it on-line unless you've installed specific scripts
on the server or are using hosting such as GitHub Pages... and even then,
they'd need your ID and Password / OAuth / AccessToken, which is only
stored in *your* browser (using Local Storage), which permits *you* to save
changes online without re-entering your ID and PW, but won't let anyone
else save online.

For example, "Inside TiddlyWiki" (http://TiddlyTools.com/InsideTW/) can be
viewed by anyone, but only I can change the online version.

Note: Inside TiddlyWiki also has a custom-built "locked/unlock" toggle
that, by default, hides the admin/editing functions to give a simplified
"read-only" experience; however, even when "unlocked", visitors cannot
*save* back to the online copy.
