[total-madness] Especially for Q............

2000-11-06 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

It's not Madness but a lot of you out there will be
interested. In this month's Q magazine, in the opening
pages, Jerry Dammers writes an open letter to the
magazine as a result of their review of
"Stereotypical", the recent Specials' compilation.
Basically, he is setting the record straight about a
few of the songs he wrote such as "War Crimes" and
"Niteklub". As he is not well known for doing too many
interviews, any insight into Mr. 2-TONE is definitely
worth a read

[total-madness] Phil Jupitus.........You're Wonderful

2000-10-22 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Ladies and airheads hee-hee,

Friday night, I went to see Phil Jupitus live at the
Olympia in Dublin. Not only is he totally hilarious
and well recommended but he played a barrel load of
Ian Dury tracks before he came on. I was delighted
because I was able to slip a copy of my fanzine
backstage which has Ian Dury on the front page.

Completely unrelated but has anybody who has the
bootleg (don't mention those, Vince!!) of Madstock 3
noticed that Carl sings the verses of "You're
Wonderful" to a different key than the recorded
version and the Euro '96 version. It's totally cool
and draped in emotion.

Bye, bye, get lost,
xxx

1. For those subscribed to my fanzine, I'll be posting
issue 5 to you during the week. It's a 48 page special
including a fab article that Lee has written on Ian
Dury especially for you. For anybody going to the gig,
I'll bring it along on saturday. Hope that's okay. If
anybody would like a copy for the first time, please
mail me off-list.

2. Now I know that I'm almost three weeks out of date
with this but I've been on th net very little lately
to get my chance to say what I thought about Young
Guns, so I just thought I'd like to add in a few
things:

 - Anybody notice Lee's reference to Madness becoming
like a "Runawa train" which was one of the rumoured
titles for "Wonderful"?
 - If Dave Robinson thinks that he wasn't pushing the
band too far, then what does he think about bands
releasing studio albums only every two to three years
these days. Surely that's proof.
 - I liked Carl's comment about "you don't need lots
of stuff, just the 7 of us on stage". I personally
can't stand the way bands like U2 spend horrfic
amounts of money on special affects to try make their
own performance more memorable.
 - Yes, Carl had too little to say but I've always
felt that Chris is much better putting his thoughts to
pen.
 - Suggs had far too much to say with his same old
stories. That one about the Melody Maker advert for a
new band is wearing thin. And as for that story about
sitting on the floor of Lee's flat on the Caledonian
Road..he has spent so much time on that floor that
he must have the sorest arse in Camden. Must explain
some of his funny dancing in the early days!! The only
overtold anecdote was why the band split up"Health
reasons, we got sick of each other"or each other's
stories Suggs!!
 - Nice to hear Mike talking about life in general /
his move to Buddhism. Hadn't heard that at all.
 - Woody's points about The Madness wre interesting.
When do we ever hear anything controversial about the
band? No wonder there has never been a proper
biography about them.
 - I was really happy about the emphasis put on
Madness lyrics. Always good to hear them get
recognition for that as well as Mike for his unique
piano playing which I can only really remember Jools
Holland doing before.
 - I didn't like Suggs' comment that they should have
broken up when Mike left. Just because the singles and
albums afterwards were not commercially successful is
not a reason to regret them. Does that make
'Wonderful' regrettable. I hope not, big man.
 - Although it was good to see Madness have a
documentary of their own it's unfortunate that they
were lumbered in with those other groups. Soft Cell
only had one successful album.

Bye bye, get lost..

[total-madness] Lyrical wizards

2000-10-08 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

As I said in my e-mail i think that Madness wrote
some cracking lyrics. Anyway, I hate pointless polls
as much as the next person, but why don't people mail
me off-list with their favourite line from a Madness
song. It's not a poll as few will have the same lyric
in common. I'll just send one e-mail with the person's
name and favourite lyric at the end of the week.

In the meantime, here are some of my favourites:

 - The feeling of arriving when you've nothing left to
lose. That classic line from "One Better Day" gets me
in places where I didn't even know I had places!!
 - "He said goodbye to his wife and child". What other
band in the world would put such a lyric in a song and
come to think of it, what other band has dedicated two
songs to the homeless???
 - "If you don't fit in, you'll fit in here". The
classic line which almost sums up madmeets! Tee -
hee!!
When Suggs puts his mind to it, he can write a good
lyric. This one of course is from the "Three Pyramids
Club" title track. I just wish he'd put his mind to it
more often.
 - "Plucking up the courage to speak". Taken from the
demo of "Listen To Your Father", this is a line which
sums up the awkward father-son relationship where you
find it difficult to say what's on your mind.
 - "When your race is run and you already know".
Almost an ambiguous line from "Yesterday's Men" for a
band who knew their time was soon to be up.
 - "Just shut your mouth for 5 minutes and lay back on
your bed". Taken from the Crunch! unreleased gem
"Going Solo". Only Lee Thompson, Eminem or The Prodigy
could get away with this lyric. Smack my Kix up!!

Blah-blah,
The Carden

[total-madness] The Name Of The Debut Velvet Ghost Album Is......

2000-09-17 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Ladies and gentlewomen,

I thought I'd send a non - contraversial e-mail for a
change ("about time too, Vince")!!

Anyway, the great news is that Mr. Cathal Joseph
Patrick Smyth has decided that the winning entry for
the "name the album" competition is

"The Father, The Son And The Velvet Ghost"

Not only that, but as was not originally the plan,
Carl has decided to use this as the actual name for
the album, which is an added bonus!!!

The lucky winners are Stevie boy Chapman who gets the
Madness vinyl clock, which is made from the dutch 12"
version of Complete Madness and a 4 issue subscription
to Madness Unsugged (that second part is really sad
Vince!!) and some bloke called Vince Foley who gets
the handwritten lyrics for a newly written Velvet
Ghost song. I suppose that the main thing is boasting
to your friends that you've named the album. Steve,
can you mail me off-list.

The other entries were

In the beginning The Communicator
Reflections of tomorrow Goosebumps grooves
Walk with the ghost Chips and gravy
Whenever Today is a gift
Holiday in Holloway The first shout
The ghostly geezers Diary of a madman
Quietman The velvet mafia
Magic in the air The church of.
A Lil' Smash Vaporous
Good to see you Sweet soul brother
Forget the madness Phantom fantastic
Time out Path with a heart
The iron fist in the velvet glove
Velvetghost.com The spirit of Ireland
(Waiting for the) ve;lvet ghost train
When pieces of rind get lodged in the mind
The weak and the strong Welcome to the darkside
The first ghost Smooth manifestations
Insights to my soul Drunken whispers
On to the ground Paranormal activities
The man who haunted himself

Hopefully, we can do the same again one day, hoping
that the Velvet Ghost album will not be a one - off.
Not only thanks to Cathal for letting me run the
competition but also for letting me be the first to
announce the name of his debut album. I am
unworthy

[total-madness] Don't Quote Me On That.......

2000-09-13 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Hello boys and girls,

Now I know how Carl felt back in 1980..

First of all, let me apologise for the following
e-mail. I don't want this to carry on as a long
running childish argument, but I will take exception
with anybody misquoting me. Saying that the band won't
give a damn about us being ripped off by Virgin
compilations is not the same as saying that the band
don't care about their fans full stop!! Lee, Carl and
Chris in particular have been very good to me in the
past and I know that they all care about the fans.
That's why three of the band receive the weekly M.I.S.
bulletin every week.
However, it is clear that what I was saying
(below) was that the band won't lose any sleep over
yet another Virgin compilation. Who can blame them,
they have more important things on their mind. If we
are going to be over-the-top about this, I can always
reproduce the interview from Record Collector last
year where Carl defended all the greatest hits cds.
This is not a criticism of Carl, it must be stated.
In response to my "BOOTLEGS ARE GREAT!" line, it
was stated that bootlegs should not be sold for
profit. Where did I say they should be sold for
profit I spoke out against this in my previous
e-mail. Am I missing something??? Don't quote me on
that!
Also, in your e-mail on monday, Jenny, you stated
that the list does not endorse the sale of bootlegs
and "I'm sure most of us would agree". I'm afraid
Jenny that you'll find yourself in a tiny minority
there. Most of the people on this list would possess a
bootleg cd amongst their collection which is proof of
that person's own endorsement.
Finally, the list has been on a slippery slope in
recent months with nothing happening with the band.
Chris Mountain quite correctly pointed out at and
after the Rhythmstock weekend that the list needs
fresh ideas. Exactly, and I reckon a very interesting
thing would be if people listed their own bootlegs, so
the rest of us would know what is missing in their
collection. For example, somebody recently offered me
a French gig from 1986 on cd. Never knew it existed
actually. But you won't know if you don't discuss.
It's one of the reasons why people get the MIS
bulletin instead of being a member of the list.

Vince Carden...Don't mix music and politics!

 What the hell is this?
Portraying Madness as a band that doesn't care about

is just totally unbelievable... especially after all
 the things they have
 done for us.

Bootlegs, in my opinion, should not be sold for

money goes to the band. It's one thing to have a
 copy of a concert you
paid to go see, it's entirely another to make X
 amount of copies and
 profit from a band's performance.

[total-madness] Bootleg Bull***t

2000-09-11 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

I just thought I'd put an e-mail out on the bootleg
topic seeing as my name has been bandied about a bit
and also some of this politically correct waffle is
getting right on my nerves!!

I sent an e-mail a few months back on justifying my
own sale of bootleg cds. To summarise, I do three
issues a year of my fanzine Madness Unsugged. Each
costs £500. Subscriptions and sales bring me in about
£230. Without the sale of these cds, I'd be losing
£800 a year. In fact the next issue has an extra 16
pages which between extra postage and photocopying
costs will cost me an extra £100. I didn't need to do
that, it's just misguided devotion and some socialist
zarjazz silliness on my part. Selling these cds is my
only way of recouping some of the cost. I also did it
to take it out of the hands of somebody who was making
ridiculous money and conning people and me.

Point nuimber 1: "You're depriving the band of
revenue"No, no. The likes of Suggs singing
"I'm only sleeping" on the Danny Baker show and
Madness doing "lovestruck" on TFI Friday, as appear on
the Nutty Sounds cds that I sell, are hardly going to
be on your shelf in HMV and Virgin next Monday.

Point Number 2: We as fans were badly ripped off with
"The Business", forking out about £23 for nothing new,
not to mention the other joke compilations. So Virgin
and Madness losing money is hardly goinmg to make me
cry. If Virgin had any intention of doing anything
with the kind of material that appears on "First Step
Behind", they'd have done it on "The Business". If
somebody was selling bootleg compilations of
"Wonderful", that would have been a different story.

Point Number 3: With the various compilations,
Madstocks and short tours to large audiences, Madness
have mastered the idea of Profit Maximisation with
Effort Minimisation since 1992. The compilations since
then have seen them take money unfairly from fans
although I do know that it is the decision of Virgin
to do these (mind you, have you ever heard any of the
boys returning royalties???). Again no tears shed for
the boys.

Oh by the way, do you think Madness give a damn about
you when you get ripped of by Virgin's compilations
and digitally remastered rubbish?!?! What's that
phrase about "getting a taste of your own medicine".

BOOTLEGS ARE GREAT! BOOTLEGS ARE GREAT! BOOTLEGS ARE
GREAT! BOOTLEGS ARE GREAT! BOOTLEGS ARE GREAT!

"First Step Beyond"..20 plus tracks of ordinary
magic. It's definitely worth a listen..

2. That so called Live at the BBC cd is not available

three weeks on, they tell me it's deleted. Did it even
exist?

3. Very soon, I'll have news of the Velvet Ghost album
competition winner(s). Just waiting for the big man to
give me formal confirmation.

4. Madness Unsugged issue 5 will be out at the end of
the month. Usually 32 pages long, this one will be a

2000-08-07 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Ladies and gentlewomen

My apologies. I've done a Graham Hewson..oh well
at least it wasn't slanderous, hee-hee. Anyway, I was
supposed to be writing an e-mail to the list about
Suggs doing 'Hit me with your rhythm stick' which was
shown on Irish tv last night.
Starting off with a big hug for Marti Pello and
wearing the blue pin - striped suit from Abbamania and
'I am', he sang a shortened version of the song with
two backing singers helping him with the lyrics 'Hit
me, hit me' to give the song more kick. He even added
in the lyrics 'Hit me baby one more time'!!!
He also sported a rather tight haircut which
didn't match his fat face!!
Anyway, BIG SLOPPY KISSES TO ALL YE ON THE
MADLIST!!
Sloppy apologies to you all again!!
 Lots of love

[total-madness] Crunchstock awards............

2000-07-17 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Ladies and assassins,

It gives me great pressure and great pleasure to
announce the Crunchstock! awards:

 - Best new phrase for being drunk: "Scat-arsed"do
you really need me to elaborate
 - Best song on the night: "Here he comes" and "Saints
and Sinners"
 - Best cure for post Crunchstock depression:
Believing the rumours circulating on friday night that
there would be two Velvetstocks in september
 - Best thrill: Talking to John Hasler
 - Biggest mistake: Apparently (the Ayatollah Foley
tells me)I said something to John Hasler like "Hey, I
need this plastering job done, are you still in that
line of business?"
 - Biggest surprise: Finding that Cheryl's friends'
gig turned into a secret party for two blokes from
Blur afterwards. Drummer is sound, guitarist is a
tosser.
 - Best geezer: Swanny (sorry Scat but you'll have to
relinquish your award for one weekend!)
 - Biggest regret: I had this plan to jump on stage
afterwards and shout on the microphone "Please leave
in a noisy fashion and could the last one out turn the
lights off please", but somebody was spitting in my
face so I had to wait around.
 - Worst Irish accent: Simesy..and nobody in
Ireland says "To be sure, to be sure". Spank you!
 - Best anecdote: I met Vince Foley in Oxford Street
and told him he had to bring me up to the MTV studios
in Camden to meet Kelly Brook, who I'm a slight fan
of, ahem!! Anyway, he says "you can't, she's on
holidays this week". I had to head off to Croydon for
a bit,so on his way to Camden on the tube, who is
sitting completely opposite him?.Kelly Brook. Who
is sitting right beside him? Ska music's most famous
insomniac and ex-d singer of The Specials Terry Hall!

I'm going to bed, I hate you trainspotters.

Boys and babes,

Carl has given me permission to run a velvet ghost
competition. It is a competition to see who can come
up with the best name for the Velvet Ghost's album. Of
course, I have to state that it does not necessarily
mean that the best one chosen will, in the end, be
the name on the album but Carl himself will be the
sole judge of the competition and the prize for the
winner is a Madness vinyl clock and if it's really
good, maybe it will be the name of the album.
Two suggested names are allowed per person. Please
e - mail me OFF - LIST. The competition is open to:
 - Members of the tmml
 - Subscribers to the M.I.S. bulletin
 - Readers of "Madness Unsugged".

Funny you should ask that Steve. The night after
the Dury gig I was in a bar in Camden at Dingwalls and
was talking to the Canadian barmaid. I was explaining
why I was over here but she hadn't heard of Madness.
"You know 'Our House', 'House Of Fun'" was my reply.
"That was the mini - pops who sang those songs, wasn't
it?" was her reply. Suddenly I was no longer on the
pull!
A band called "Splodgenessbounds" (no that's not a
mispelling!) did a b - side called "One Sock Beyond",
a slightly altered version of Madness's second
single...

Have fun.

[total-madness] Suggs' vocals

2000-07-06 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Ladies and layabouts,

Hope you're well (eight days till Crunchstock!)
I think some people have lost the plot on the Suggs
debate. Marti Pellow may be able to reach the high
notes, but his voice is very one - dimensional. Suggs
can sing catchy fast songs and also melancholic
numbers. This argument about Suggs singing in a
cockney accent the whole time is a bit misguided and
outdated. What about 4a.m. / If I Didn't Care /
Elysium / Dreaming Man / I Was The One / Green Eyes /
So Tired and the masterpieces of the Keep Moving and
MNM albums such as Yesterday's Men and Prospects. I
don't think he shows limited singing ability
there.hardly singing in an Ian Dury manner. Can't
you just imagine Marti pellow doing an awful
predictable cover version of Yesterday's Men. I truly
belive that when it comes to singing sad songs, Suggs'
voice can't b beaten.
Some of the points put forward made it sound
like the writer's hadn't listened to a Madness album
since Absolutely where I'd be the first to admit that
he was limited nad talked the lyrics. Where Suggs
messes up is on the live scene, but I think his
singing on 'Wonderful' is both varied and better than
anything from any Madness album.
Marti Pellow is a choir boy who got lucky and
there are plenty of prototypes of him in boybands.
Suggs is distinct, cockney accent or not.
Quality singing is not about singing the high
notes. It's about having an interesting voice and no
Marti you haven't got that.

   Till next time,
   Vince Carden.

Re: [total-madness] Suggs Demoes/b - sides

2000-07-01 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Boys and babes,
I've never heard of any Suggs demos really apart
from the white label Three Pyramids Club promo where
some of the songs have little differences. The only
one I've heard is the "Straight Banana" demo where the
chorus is slightly different. As well as that, there
are shouts of "Nuclear Weapon" instead of the title
track, almost reminding you of the Specials
masterpiece "Man at C A". If you can get your hands
on that promo cd, you'll hear slight differences on
tracks such as "Our Man". Maybe, Simon Roberts will
know if there are any demos about.
Can I also say that it used to really annoy me
when Suggs used to say that he enjoyed the half of the
"Lone Ranger" that Sly and Robbie produced whereas the
Barson / McPherson produced tracks were a nightmare
experience. Bullshit!! "Green Eyes", "4a.m." and
"She's Gone" were miles better than the crap that Sly
and Slyer produced such as "Off on holiday", "Cecelia"
and "Haunted". He said in one or two interviews about
Sly and Robbie that "I really liked that stuff they
were doing with Chaka Demus and the pliers". I won't
even respond to that McPherson..
   Best Suggs b - sides:
1. Animal
2. When you came
3. It really would be nice (great song when you're
feeling down)
4. Same again

I also reckon there might be one or two songs never
heard from his solo career that he would have been
keeping for a second and third single from the Three
Pyramids Club

[total-madness] Wait till you read this............

2000-06-25 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Hello Rhythmstockers, Crunchstockers and
Smashstockers,

Recently I sent a warning to the list telling
everybody to avoid a certain Andy Gleaves. Well, I'd
like to add a few names to the list...Jury (well
you knew that already), Muscat, Madame Barso and Caz
Smash (cross the street immediately if you see this
one).
I am of course about to share with you the
worst and scariest of the mad filled dreams.
I really hope that Caz Smash does not take the
lyrics "In my dreams I have a plan" to heart because
if she is looking for any of this to come true, I for
one will not be turning up on the 14th of July for
fear of bumping into her.
Caz Smash No. 1.Woody comes along with a
John Major mask on and sets light to Suggs' house.
Scared??? She has had this one three times!!
Caz Smash No. 2.Mike comes to her house,
knocks on the door and then brings her to a gig on a
kids tricycle, but instead of playing a gig, all the
band were just smoking hash. Bedders kept having a go
at her for only buying one copy of "Drip Fed Fred".
(MR.C - So Bedders knew they released the song...now
now Mr. Carden, stop slagging off his part time
involvement!)
Caz Smash No. 3.At the DFF video shoot,
Chas picks her up and starts swinging her around by
the legs. Disaster strikes when he falls over a
lighting thingy and smashes all the bulbs! So Adele
gets really angry and orders five of them to go to "Do
it all" and buy some new light bulbs. So off they go
walking from Camden to Wycombe (MR. C - You wouldn't
even cycle that distance Caz!!) and got there but
there were no light bulbs. So Carl started crying but
Caz wasn't very sympathetic and Suggs told Carl to
"Fuck off!". Suggs then dragged her down the paint
aisle and proceeded to paint her face like in the
"Grey Day" video.
Jury No. 1.She dreams about turning up at
the school graduation with all her classmates dressed
up as Woody and Lee from the "It Must Be Love" video.
(MR.C - I thought they taught you about the birds and
bees at an earlier age!!)
Muscat No. 1.Madness are touring Malta,
Italy and Sicily when on the night of the opening
concert, Suggs comes down with a bout of the flu and
Carl pushes Mr. Muscat up to be frontman. Suggs'
health improves and he comes on stage halfway through.
As the Muscat is doing so well, Suggs keeps him with
him ( MR. C - maybe it's because of Suggs' habit of
forgetting lyrics!). Included in the set is a weird
version of "Razor Blade Alley" with himself, Suggs,
Lee and Carl exchanging verses!!
Whereas in that dream Mr. Muscat was the 8th
member of Madness, Wee Stoo seems to think Anna
Kournikova is the eighth member. That can be the only
explanation for him e - mailing me with the details of
his little rendez-vous in an elevator with the Russian
pin up tennis star. I've already forwarded his e -
mail to FHM and the perv police!! Thanks Stoo, I
really need those kind of e - mails. You should get
"American Pie" on DVD
Madame Barso No. 1.This one starts off on
the Christmas tour with the venue being a small pub
(MR.C - ha!ha! so you're dreaming of Madness 10 years
down the line...) Mike sees her and gets her up on
stage. She spends the rest of the gig with him by the
keyboard (MR.C - Did you teach him how to play "Drip
Fed Fred" properly!!) It then moves on to the Royal
Bank Of Scotland in Camden. She's sitting with the
band having a drink but it's just her and Mike. She
tries to get up but Mike takes her hand to shake it
and won't let go. On her way out the band tease Mike
about her.
Well there you have it. "The maddest fans in all
the world, how could you do this to me?"
Till next time,
Vince Carden

Primrose Hill would be a good venue. As for the TMML

getting the friday off work so that we can meet at the
Spreadeagle for 12.
What can we do to make it a Crunch! day rather than
just another madmeet? If we did something special, Lee

So, how about it then chaps (And indeed, lassies,
 should you be into that

 the Crunch gig, the

 soundly beaten by a Scots

will be downed the day before, natch...

Having looked at the e - mails so far, here is what I
have as an idea for the next meet up:

 - Friday afternoon meet at spreadeagle.
 - Friday night.great gig
 - After gig???
 - Saturday afternoon.Scotland v England /
Celtic v Rangers
 - Saturday evening.go to see Cheryl's mate's band
in Kentish Town
 - Sunday morning..hangover

Scatty also has an idea of having a little trip to see
the Hope and Anchor / Topsfield Road (Mikey Boy's old
house)and other areas of interest.

By the way, I had to give up my football career when I
broke both ankles within a year, so keep your 50/50's

lose on Madness Unsugged!!! Yes, I know..
£230!!Subscriptions don't even add up to the cost of
my fanzine's front cover which is £265. The ironic
thing about it losing me lots of money is that I was
originally going to call it Zarjazz!! But yes, I agree
with your point and it brings me onto another point
which I covered in the latest issue of my fanzine:

There is a low life scumbag who goes by the name of
Andy Gleaves and lives in Bolton. The self titled
'Madness specialist' only specialises in one
thing...theft. I sent him almost a three figure
some for collectors items. I got nothing despite
constant reminder letters. In 1992 he was investigated
by police after complaints to Record Collector
magazine where he advertised. He's still doing the
rounds though and I've heard about five stories from
other fans who have had dodgy dealings with him. I bet
this tale will bring back bad memories for others. For
the lucky ones who haven't had dealings with him,
avoid him like the plague.

Spank you very much!!

[total-madness] A load of poll - ocks!!

2000-06-08 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Hello all,

Some time ago, Jenny asked me to put the results of
three polls I had in my fanzine whenever I had the
results. Here goes:

Asked to name their top 5 tracks from the new album in
order of preference, the results were as follows:

1. Lovestruck
2. The Communicator
3. Drip Fed Fred
4. Johnny The Horse
5. Elysium
6. Saturday night, sunday morning
7. The Wizard
8. 4 A.M.
9. No Money
10.If I didn't care
11.Going To The Top

The Communicator easily got the most number one
preferences whereas 'Lovestruck' featured in 90% of
everyone's top 5. Confirming my own belief that most
fans who like 'Elysium' think it's the best song on
the album, this track had the second highest amount of
first preferences with most people who voted for it
having it as their favourite.. Going To The Top was
not even in 10% of the top 5's. I'm sure 4a.m. would
have finished higher if we all didn't hear and love it
before.
And now to a hypothetical poll. If there was a
fourth single, what would you like it to be? 'If I
didn't care' was the only track not deemed single
friendly. 'Saturday night, sunday morning' marginally
pipped the forgotten a - side 'Elysium' for second
spot. 'Going to the top' and '4 a.m.' easily finished
joint last:
 1. The Communicator
 2. Saturday night, sunday morning
 3. Elysium
 4. The Wizard
 5. No Money

Finally, in the poll to see which Suggs album did
readers prefer, 70% voted for The Three Pyramids Club.

See ya on the 16th.

[total-madness] Divine waste of time!!!

2000-06-04 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Hello there,

1. Got Divine Madness yesterday. What can I say?
Digitally remastered my arse!! I still can't
believe I wasted £17. Basically, none of the tracks
sound any different. It's only good for one thing.
It'll probably win the band a few more young fans
again. It has certainly received more shelf space than
'Wonderful' and was one of six albums that HMV were
playing all day yesterday. I reckon subscribers should
check its chart position next sunday night. It might
go top 20 or 30.
The back of the cd box is different, the mini -
booklet is different, the album of course has
'Lovestruck' and 'JTH' and the cd itself is sort of a
brownish red colour very like the recent cds. Just
don't rush to the shops tomorrow to buy it.

2. That was definitely Chalky in the headbutting
scene.

3. I think 'My Guy' got to number 30. I'd like to
think Bedders regrets his involvement in it. I still
have him on video saying Culture Club were a favourite
of his. Yuk!

4. Quite the opposite to what was said earlier, I
applaud Chas for picking the 'Velvet Ghost'. Anybody
doing something outside of Madness should not pick a
name that is trying to borrow from the band's legacy.
It will also be very interesting as his music will be
so different from Madness than that of any other
related act. Calling bands 'The Madness' and 'The
Nutty Boys' were two very sad regrettable decisions.

5. Suggs' wife was also in a band once called 'The
Rubber Biscuits'.

6. For those interested (and that certainly doesn't
include me), why don't you set up the 'Total Madness
Ageing List'! Ha!Ha! One last jibe.

Blah, blah,

[total-madness] Le Madness / Nice guy Woody

2000-06-01 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

1. Yes, there was a band called the Wasp Factory who
themselves were named after a book of the same name.
Apparently Elysium is named after a book too, "The
Elysium Treatment". In the end they opted for The
Madness because when they used to go to France, the
French used to call them "Le Madness" (apologies if
the last anorak fact provokes more french e - mails
like we've had recently!!)

2. Daniel Woodgate is one of the nicest guys I've ever
met. He hates people being in awe of him and he loves
talking to fans. I accept the point that he and the
graphic designer aren't the most nutty in the band,
but when he pens a song he tends to write masterpieces
only - "Elysium", "Michael Caine", "Los Palmas" etc.
He really looked after two mates of mine in a big way
recently and if you ever met him you'd take to him

Before they were called the Specials, they were called
the Special AKA and then on their final album when
Golding, Hall and Staples formed Fun Boy Three,
Dammers went back to having them called their original

Re: [total-madness] 7 Singles????

1. Yes, the third single from Wonderful is not
available on vinyl unfortunately. 'We are Love' and 'I
was the one' are the b - sides for the first two
vinyls. Anybody out there able to make covers for
vinyls??
2. The may issue of Record Collector has an excellent
four page interview from late last year with Ian Dury
and a lovely A4 sized picture of him on the back
holding his stick.
3. There is an album out at the moment by Van
Morrisson, Lonnie Donergan and Chris Barber that has
been getting a lot of media attention. Is this the
same Chris Barber who played all that vintage 1920's
music on Suggs' track 'Our Man'?

[total-madness] Telly tubbies

2000-04-30 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

1. The vinyl clock is the 12" vinyl of Complete
Madness not a picture disk but the tick tocks are
.."definitely worth a listen".

Some recent tv stuff:

a)BBC Ceefax page where viewers can send in their
opinion have recently let fans discuss their favourite
Madness single. You can e - mail yours to them at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
b)Seamas 'Mad Not Mad' Beaghan was on Later on Jools
Holland last week playing the keyboards for "Death In
Vegas".
c)I didn't see it myself but some tv station showed
Suggs presenting Ian Dury with his award at the 'Q'
awards within the last week. Luckily a mate has it for
me on video. Did anybody else catch it?
d)Everybody seemed to enjoy 'This is your life' simply
because it was Suggs, but that shouldn't blind our
judgment. John Hasler, Chalky and Toks, Dave Robinson
(are the band still on talking terms with him?) and
Elvis Costello should have been on it rather than the
braindead 'Porky Spice'!! Also, the Chelsea link got
more coverage than Madness!!!
e)Two weeks ago Channel 4 teletext reviewed my
fanzine. Of course my stupid cousin who didn't even
know of my musical interests before then told me when
it was too late. Did anybody else see it? What did it
say?

Just to answer Graham Hewson's question. I for one
will most definitely be at Carl's Fleadh set. How
could anybody not go? It'll be great to hear "You're
Wonderful" make a welcome return to the live set.

Finally, two mates told me that Liam "John Lennon rip
off merchant" Gallagher slagged off Suggs' version of
"I'm only sleeping" in 1995. Does this ring a bell
with anybody? As a fan of the Beatles, I find Oasis
version of "I am the walrus" offensive. Also, none of
the remaining Beatles have anything good to say about
Oasis whereas John Lennon had good things to say about
the Maddies. Anybody remember what Gallagher said?
I don't know if any of your mums or sisters get
Hello magazine but they had some great glossy photos
from Ian Dury's funeral about two or three weeks ago.

[total-madness] Time, he may change his time, he'll outage his time.......

2000-04-25 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Time. so important that the Velvet Ghost once
wrote a song about it. Well, today I received a
Madness clock from www.vinylclock.co.uk only three
days after ordering it. It's basically vinyl turned
into a clock (i.e. just the LP with some clockhands
added on). You can get them on 7", 12" and LP and they
make a great piece of memorabilia. Mine is the
Complete Madness album and cost me £14.99.
Yeah, I think the Velvet Ghost project is
something serious to look forward too. Being the most
motivated and least lethargic member of the band (not
that achieving the latter is difficult), he'll release
new material quicker than you can say "You're
Wonderful". Also, from "JTH" to "The Communicator" and
from "We are love" to "Michael Caine", he has easily
the most diverse songwriting skills in the band.
Rather patronisingly, the NME reviewed the "Electric
Ballroom" gig and said it was like going to see your
mates play. That's what it will be like with Carl as
more than any of the 7, he treats the fans like mates
and so deserves our support. Speaking of 7, am I write
in saying that somebody listed 7 as their least
favourite sleeve. I know we're all entitled to our
opinions, but ..okay okay we're all entitled to
our opinions so I'll leave it at that!!
Finally, I now know why we Maddies wear
sunglasses. Fear that Suggs will wear bright green
clothing like he did on last saturday's edition of
"Question Of Pop". Yuk!

[total-madness] Commisserations, Cancellations and self adulations!!

2000-04-09 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Today's "sunday people" reports that Robbie Williams
is organising a tribute album to Ian Dury, with the
proceeds going to cancer.

On a different note, can I just point out one thing
I'm getting sick of about the Madness comeback...the
amount of cancellations:

 - Hackney Empire 20th Anniversary gig
 - Dublin leg of the Maddest Show On Earth
 - Promotional Day for Drip Fed Fred
 - Madstock 5
 - U.S. Tour

and plenty more. It's all getting a bit tiring and
makes you think twice before booking anything. Most of
it is down to bad organisation. Who was stupid enough
to think that the Hackney Empire was big enough?
Surely permission from the local council would have
been the first thing to organise for the promo day.
With the last single being launched three months
before its release at the greyhound track, why did the
band only give two days notice to fans to turn up for
the video shoot?
"But don't ask me, I'm lost too".
And now on a slightly jollier note, Record Collector
have reviewed my fanzine!! Yippee..

[total-madness] Spellbinding offer - JTH Vinyl / Irish Mad Meet

2000-03-19 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Gentlemen and Virgin records haters (!),

1.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the first
Irish mad meet was a terrific success. All four of us
had a great time!
The Vince Foley titled O' Meet took place in Bruxelles
bar with the juke box that contained 'Complete
Madness', Various Ska compilations and the original
versions of Under My Thumb, Apeman and Goodbye
Blackberry Way. I also have a new nickname from a guy
who overheard our chat."The bloke who hates
boybands". As I speak Vince is at a Sting gig probably
listening to some waffle like "Save the trees" or
"Yoga's great" or "My accountant stole millions from
me", so our most sincere condolescenses, VJF.

2.
Spellbound Records (Tel:0181-6880419) have two or
three copies of Johnny The Horse on 7". It costs £10
or so. As they are made for jukeboxes in Japan, they
only have a white ordinary sleeve, but will be major
collectors items in years to come.

[total-madness] Remembering all so unclearly!!

2000-03-15 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

To answer Gary Saunders query:

You won't get Remembering Oh so clear or Ghost
of Reverend Greene anywhere unless some of Chas
Smash's demos go missing again!! The other unreleased
songs from 1986 which you can get are only available
as live bootlegs, because they played them in
Birmingham and Australia and other places.
Also, I think "Remembering oh so clear" is the
greatest Madness notion. I'm convinced it is not a
song, only a poem that Lee wrote for the M.I.S
fanzine. I actually asked him about it recently and he
couldn't remember any song from 1986 called that.
Also, the words look more like poetry than lyrics.
Lots of verses yet no chorus. It could be that people
are getting the track mixed up with "Remember the
day", which was the original demo for "Nightmare
Nightmare", later used by The Madness.

[total-madness] Some harsh truths

2000-03-15 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

There has been a lot of post mortems recently about
the anti climax of the whole comeback. Can I bluntly
offer a few reasons why things have gone wrong:

 - People so identify Suggs with Madness that the idea
of a Madness comeback wasn't that interesting. His
solo albums made it feel like they hadn't been away,
even though we all know that there is far more to
Madness than the Hastings crooner.
 - Suggs got up a few people's noses with his (almost)
three cover versions from his first solo album.
Madness have been affected by this. In fact some
members of the band wanted to stick a cover version on
the album to have as a safe single, but as one of them
said, it wasn't possible because of Suggs solo career.
Lee actually would have liked "Lola". This second
point should prove my first point too.
 - Madness went over the top with the cabaret act. It
felt like they hadn't been away, whereas Blondie's
comeback got a lot of attention because they had made
a clean break. That's why Q magazine wanted to cover
the Blondie comeback but not the Madness one. A
comeback about 1994 or 1995 would have got a top 5
album, lots of attention and some hit singles.
 - 4 years ago, I wrote in a fanzine that "You're
Wonderful" should have been the comeback single. It
really would have made the public stand back and take
notice. This really was something unexpected.
 - Albums need promotion. Whereas you can blame radios
for not playing the singles, albums need promotion.
Let's make a comparison. The recent Pet Shop Boys and
Eurythmics albums had posters everywhere. Nobody will
tell me they're bigger than Madness. Virgin can't
argue with this point. In 1995, Madness sold out
Dublin's Point Theatre to an 8,000 capacity. In 1999
no promotion resulted in about 1,500 tickets only
sold. Proof of how vital promotion is.
 - Johnny The Horse as a single was a cock up. It's a
great song but the singles markets are for kids. DO WE
THINK LOVESTRUCK DID AS WELL AS IT DID BECAUSE 10,000
30 - 32 YEAR OLDS WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE SINGLE. No,
the kids did, and JTH is a song that isn't as
immediately as catchy as Lovestruck, so adults would
only appreciate it. Also, singing about a homeless guy
being kicked to death is no longer trendy in the
current music scene.
 - The "old boys getting back together tag carries a
lot of scepticism. There's nothing the boys can do
about this.
 - When JTH flopped, that was it. CD:UK and other kids
programmes didn't want a band who couldn't get in the
top 40 and radio stations likewise. One mistake and
you're gone. Drip Fed Fred was too late.
 - Music has changed even within the last four or five
years. I remember radio stations wouldn't play Take
That at the start of their career, as it was deemed
sad. Now these manufactured puffs (sorry boy bands)
are the trendiest things in music. Everything has
changed just everything

[total-madness] Let me show you the Light of the way

2000-02-25 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Just to add a few bits and bobs to compliment Vince
Foley's review of the Light Of The Way Mix:

1. Not is it only gospel like in its musical style but
the theme is almost religious like : "For I have seen
the light of the way". The heavy rejoiceful vocals
almost conjure up an image of the Hollywood
blockbuster "Sister Act" or Blur's hit "Tender".
Sounds like the kind of reflective upbeat song that
somebody would write after coming out after a long
spell in hospital and everything in life seems great.

2. Two and half minutes long, but it should have been
longer. It stops as it is just getting started.

3. The piano is closer to that of the piano solo in
"You're Wonderful" rather than Mike's tinkling sound
in "Lovestruck".

4. Here the vocals are far more important as the music
firmly takes second place. All there is on the musical
side to report on is some fairly ordinary play.

5. Both "Dreaming Man" and the other Smyth composed
masterpiece "You're Wonderful" left us scratching our
heads wondering why they weren't album tracks (even
singles?). However, like "We are love", this song has
found its place in life as a b - side, I think most
people will agree. Well worth the listen, but I don't
think I'd go so far as to say that "We want Whoopi
Goldberg for our leader".
Enjoy!

[total-madness] Better Fred than dead!

2000-02-25 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

And now to add to Vince Foley's review of "We want
Freddie":

1. Not since the demos of Michael Caine and Uncle Sam
has there been a version so worthwhile to listen to
and yet so far away from the final version.

2. Lee's vocals start off as if you've put the song on
at the wrong speed. You try to correct the speed only
to realise you're playing it on cd!!!

3. The vocals early on in the song sound very like Lee
on his Crunch! material especially the unreleased gem
"Round Trip" with more of those Wild West vocal
performances. You can almost see him sitting in a
saloon lighting a cigar before some gunfight
showdown!!
You can easily see why Lee thought the song would be
ideal for Ian Dury. I've always thought his vocal
efforts for Crunch! resembled the King of the
blockheads. You can so imagine Dury singing the
Crunch! number "Pop My Top". Good golly Miss Molly,
you sure look tasty...

4. This seems to be the version that Suggs bases his
own vocal version on when he doesn't have Ian Dury
around.

5. Nothing could beat the album version. The demo
really lacks the variety of vocals that the album
version brings.

6. Mike's solo is absolutely class here. It has a
lovely echo and would almost haunt you. Would sound
great as part of a theme tune for "Tales Of The
Unexpected".

7. Whereas the conspiracy mix ends with the chorus,
this ends with the choir boy - like singing. All in
all this is not a very commercial version. Has too
many unnecessary additions but you'll split your sides
when you hear Lee singing "Cock - a - doodle - doo"!!

8. There are one or two funny things added into the
lyrics on the cd cover, which you can all find for
yourself, but Lee sings a few lyrics differently:

 - There are scumbags here amongst us.
 - Only break your knees. (BBC would have loved that)
 - To the king you must concede.
 - Peace shall not prevail in Purley.

Oh what fun you'll have.

[total-madness] CD:UK

2000-02-13 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Watched CD:UK on saturday and Madness were not
mentioned as being on next week's show so it looks as
though the unconfirmed appearance won't be
materialising Probably because of the lack of success
of JTH.

Do you have any B-sides from various Madness related
projects to put on instead. I lived out of the
country between 91 and april 99 so anything on
re-releases or things like " The harder they Come"
which I missed out on would be most appreciated.

A thought suddenly struck me on reading the bit
from Kevin about 'The Harder They Come'. As we all
know, it was released on 2CD and cassingle in 1992,
but only as the live version recorded at Finsbury
Park. I was lucky enough to find the studio version
in Virgin Megastore, Paris. Anyone wanting a copy of
this, together with other stuff to fill a tape up,
obviously, please contact me. Other things that can
be put onto a tape to accompany this: 'Earthquake On
Orange Street Documentary', 'Fink Brothers singles',
'Madness in Sheffield - Radio 2 last year', 'Kilburn
the High Roads - Handsome', 'Any of about 5 Ian
Dury The Blockheads albums', etc. etc..

[total-madness] MAGAZINE MADNESS

2000-02-06 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

AS WELL AS THE MIRROR SHOWBIZ PAGE, YOU'LL FIND NUTTY
ARTICLES IN Q AND MUSIC WEEK.
MUSIC WEEK SHOWS A COVER OF THE DRIP FED FRED PROMO
WITH A VERY BRIEF AND RATHER PATRONISING REVIEW OF THE
SINGLE. PROMO COVER LOOKS TOTALLY COOL TOO. PICTURE OF
CAMDEN CAFE WINDOW.
Q MAGAZINE TALKS TO 3 ASSHOLES AND ONE OTHER BLOKE
WHO WENT TO SEE UTTER MADNESS. THREE OF THEM SAID THEY
ARE BETTER THAN THE REAL THING!!! WHEREAS THE TRUTH
ABOUT UTTER MADNESS IS:

  - THEY ARE SHIT MUSICIANS.
  - THEIR SET IS PREDICTABLE.
  - THEIR SET IS FAR TOO SHORT.
  - THE ONLY THING THEIR LEAD SINGER HAS IN COMMON
WITH SUGGS IS THAT HE HAS PUT ON A FEW EXTRA POUNDS
SINCE '92.

MAYBE Q SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING SLIGHTLY MORE
WORTHWHILE LIKE COVERING THE MADNESS COMEBACK.

[total-madness] NUTTY SOUNDS 3 AND 4 NOW AVAILABLE. READ ON!

2000-02-06 Thread VINCENT CARDEN

Dear Anoraks,

Nutty Sounds 3 and 4 are now available. This is how it
will work:

 - Each disc will cost £14 + £2 (p + p) i.e. £16 in
total. Add on a further £2 if you live outside Britain
or Ireland.
 - Cheques made payable to Vincent Carden.
 - The closing date for receipt of monies is 28
February. After this date I will send out the orders
because I will be making them in batches. They are
made upon order so there is no need to e - mail me and
tell me to keep you a copy.
 - Because the closing date is 28 February, you should
receive your discs about 10 March. I will send an
e-mail to the TMML letting you know when the discs
have been sent, so don't e- mail me about your
enquiries. And don't e - mail me asking me about the
quality, coz if I'm selling them I'm hardly going to
say that they are shit!!
 - Leave about four or five days for postage so that
your money gets to me before 28 February.

Well,

Nobody else has spotted it so I thought I might

as Suggs comes onto the podium after Drip Fed Fred was
sung. Look where he puts it and look at Suggs subtley
pushing it away! Who's been a naughty boy!!
