Ah, thank you! I wasn't aware of this; it's more or less what I was
asking for.

I'll try it at some point as I get more familiar with plugins on the
Touch.
It's great to see it under development (along with lots
of other cool plugins, no doubt).

For anyone who wants to permanently disable wifi from the Touch: Would
it perhaps be just as easy to just open it up, and remove an internal

Does anybody know please, if this is even possible with the Touch?

Please note that some USB media come with two partitions, the first of which
often is a virtual CD ROM to automatically install some drivers/apps on your
Windows computer. SBS is always using the first partition. If this is the case

If you have a web server then you can create your own "playlists" too. Just
make it return a list of urls to those files. See eg.

I scaned the HD again. It took 9 hours!!. After that I have the same
problems searching or starting a title.
Now I'm waiting more than 1 hour to re-scan (searching for new files).
I think I will call the logitech support, because this CAN'T be OK.
How long did you wait for the first scan?

Studios have been taking the DSD data stream from SACD's for years. The
EMM Labs and Playback Designs machines pass a pure DSD stream in stock
form. We had to "modify" the EMM Labs ADC because the SACD Scarlet book
spec allows for a +3db signal and when directly converted to PCM, there
is clipping. With so many "hot" SACD's, we were getting too much
clipping when the EMM Labs coverter did the PCM conversion.
This is a moot point now that we just capture the DSD data stream and
do SRC using SARACON.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] If touch is gnu

2010-04-16 Thread erland

If you by goodies mean third party applets/plugins you will find them:
- If you have a standalone SBS installed on a computer, you will find
third party plugins in SBS Settings/Plugins
- On the Touch it self, you will find third party applets in
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu

Plugins are installed on the server and applets are installed on the
Touch itself. The built-in server inside the Touch doesn't support
third party plugins, so to use third party plugins you will need an
server running on a separate computer. Applets can be installed without
having a separate server on a computer.

Please note that both above settings pages/menus has an option that
hides plugins/applets that hasn't been officially recommended by
Logitech. You can change this setting if you like to see all available
plugins/applets.

Besides this there are a couple of testing repositories floating around
the forum which contains beta versions of plugins/applets, to view these
you will have to setup these as extra repositories in SBS
Settings/Plugins.

The NTFS formatted Samsung Story was also recognized by the Touch -

I need to analyze the partition info for the failing drives - I think
it might be having a single logical partition as opposed to a single

I just use Windows Explorer. The Touch should appear under My Network
Places > Microsoft Windows Networks > Workgroup. At least that's where
it appears on my XP Pro computer. Other versions of Windows may be
organized differently, but you should be able to find it through
Windows Explorer. Then just drag and drop, delete files, whatever you
normally do with local Windows files.

For some reason, sometimes the Touch doesn't show up in the workgroup
and I have to goose it a little. In the address bar enter

\\Squeezebox Touch\logs

and substitute the name that you've given to the Touch for 'Squeezebox
Touch'.The Touch with all of it's shares should then appear in
Explorer. The USB and SD card shares are prefixed with 'media-'.

Last night, I installed and used the Touch for 3-4 hours with no
problems; the install went absolutely smoothly. Nice.

I just started things up and was having the same problem as you; the
first 45 seconds play, then the song starts over. Ack.

I restarted SBS on my music server which did not help the problem.

I then rebooted the music server and all seems okay now, for the last
10 minutes at least.

So you might try to reboot the Touch using the button on the back.

Good luck.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Logitech knocked it out of the park with the Touch!

2010-04-16 Thread maggior

I received my Touch today from Crutchfield. What an awesome product.
It is of very sturdy construction and has a very classy look to it.
The screen is a nice size and angled well to avoid glare. The touch
screen is very responsive. I spent the evening using it as a
controller just to get it going. After putting the kids to bed, I
hooked it up to my headphone rig. It is a pleasure to use. I was
worried about it being a little awkward using a touch screen,
especially with my left hand, but I've gotten used to it quickly. It
fits in nicely on the table next to my "man chair".

I think I have a second one in my future to replace the SB3 in our
family room. It really makes a great drop-in replacement for an SB3.
My wife thought the Touch had a very "updated look".

As far as setup, I had absolutely NO problems. This is in tremendous
contrast with the Duet. I struggled with the Duet. I persevered
because it was such a cool product and was VERY useful. The Touch is a
dream to use and setup right off the bat!

I think Logitech made good use of the time they took to delay the
release - they have a solid product here, even on it's initial release.
I wish them lots of success with it. Hopefully they can get their
distribution issues straightened out.

As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller,
not a server. I may do that at one point to tinker.

I have the Touch and though it has a few issues with Mac (Server part)
it has great sound. I am running coax out to a Bryston BDA-1 and the
sound quality is definitely a step up from the same exact setup except

So much less jitter? Or better quality parts, idk. And 24/96 is
unbelievable. Listening to some Grateful Dead sound boards 24/96 and
you can hear a lot of spatial information and air between voices and
instruments and instruments sound more real. Im enjoying my Touch!

Most likely Logitech did not mean to give the discount hence why it was
shutdown so quickly. However unlike other companies instead of backing
out and telling those who ordered it under the discounted price sorry.
They went ahead an honored those. That does not mean that they should
refund people who paid full price because they made a couple of hour
mistake. It is not like you did not feel it was a fair price at the
time. Also people can not buy the device at a cheaper price now than
you did.

Believe it or not, I also believe the Touch compares very well to my

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] But... It sounds soooo good

2010-04-16 Thread AnotherTribe

You know what, I was thinking today that the Touch compared to the SB3
through my stock PS Audio DLIII had a greater bass extension, and
perhaps a little more "air". I put it down to the placebo effect of
having new piece of equipment. But your right, the Touch does sound
damn good!

The codes are in the Slim_Devices_Remote.ir file on your SBS server,
e.g. discrete power on is

Code:

power_on= 76898f70

I don't know how exactly you'd translate those for Pronto, but if you
can learn the power toggle code (0x7689*40bf*), hopefully it's pretty
obvious how you'd encode discrete on (0x7689*8f70*) or discrete off
(0x7689*8778*).

2010-04-16 Thread eedork

I'm streaming a 24/96 album now, and things seem to be working better
for some reason. CPU is averaging about 50% (20% usr) with about 65k
free memory. Not bad, and it generally seems better than when I tried
it this morning. I only had one short delay/glitch when I started
streaming and it rebuffered, but after that everything has been fine.

BTW - the Touch sounds wonderful!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue (& Solution!)

2010-04-16 Thread JohnSwenson

Hi Matt and Glen,

I'm seeing considerably lower CPU and memory, I'm running at about 40%
CPU and 70meg free no matter what is happening, wav/flac/44.1/96 etc.
Its 38% at 16/44.1 wav and 40% at 24/96 flac -8. Memory is sitting
right at 70meg free no matter what.

I'm wondering if its a network issue, if something is causing lots of
network errors which is causing lots of retransmissions. If this is the
case I can see why 24/96 might be considerably worse.

Is there a significant amount of kernel space CPU usage? Retries in the
WiFi would most likely show up in kernel space not user space.

John S.

Yes, I am using an SD card right now. I could also attach
a USB drive with all my photos (50GB), or pay for a really
large SD card. It's really a minor quibble,
but I am using wifi to access my music, and don't want a large
and (at least occasionally) noisy HD sitting next to my Touch.
I just thought it would be a simple hack to allow the image
viewer to browse network shares. May be I am wrong about that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue (& Solution!)

2010-04-16 Thread glenw

Thanks for the idea John - Interesting results that show it is not just
a simple CPU load problem. Hope this comes through clearly below.

I monitored the combined CPU (usr+sys) for 3 scenarios -

1. FLAC -5 16/44.1
2. FLAC -0 24/96
3. FLAC -8 24/96

CPU for 1: 30,32,28,31,27,31,19,64,98,91,35,30,32
CPU for 2: 57,56,58,58,55,59,44,98,97,72,60,55,58
CPU for 3: 73,78,86,88,86,85,87,86,85,88,87,87,87

Test 1&2 were audibly perfect. Test 3 totally unlistenable - really
bad stutters, dropouts, pauses, etc.

My reliable and consistent test file is from the HD Tracks 24/96
sampler and is:

Big Bad Girl by Harry 'Big Daddy' Hypolite

As previously no visualisations running and the internal server is not
active.

I forgot to add - there is ~39MB of free memory throughout the tests
above. Seems plenty.

I'd suggest turning on IR debugging in SBS, pointing your remotes at
the SB3, and comparing the hex codes for your Pronto and an official
Slim/Logitech remote. I've had no trouble with my remotes, both
Slim/Logitech and One For All that I've programmed with Slim hex codes.
I hope this isn't a growing problem, but I'm starting to fear that some
universal remote vendors offered JVC codes that they (mis)labeled as
Squeezebox codes. :-/

Hi

I'm using the Touch stand-a-lone with in-built server and WD 1 TB USB
hard drive, audio files are flac.

Currently...every 35 seconds the track skips back to the start of the
song. I copied the same files to a 4GB SD card and the album played
without fault. The external hard drive is only 18 months old and I have
never had problems running the drive via my pc.

The Touch is basically unusable in its current state and will be
returned if the problem remains unresolved...shame :(

John -

Wow, my results are completely different than yours. Playing regular
16/44k files on my Touch yields CPU usage of 60%. I haven't tried 24/96

I have Squeezebox Server 7.5.0 running on a Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu
10.04 beta. This is directly connected via Ethernet to my wireless
router. The Touch is about 20 feet away and streaming via wireless.
Wireless signal strength on the touch registers at 100%.

What does your Touch show for CPU usage with normal 16/44k files?

disabled the jvc .ir codes for your SB3 and restarted SBS to verify
your remote isn't sending JVC codes?

Well I don't think it actually works at the moment.
What I mean is that generating database files for the embedded server
could be an option available in next version of Squeezeserver.
Those files could be written directly on the usb disk, or "exported" on
the PC disk, so you can manually copy them to the usb disk.
I guess SQLite database structure is well known, and database files
easy to generate from whatever platform you use (a kind of
crossplatform software).

_During_ the initial library scan? Yeah, it can probably be expected
to be slow. Afterward, it should be acceptable.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue (& Solution!)

2010-04-16 Thread JohnSwenson

glenw, have you tried actually looking at the cpu and memory usage while
decoding the flac files? It would really help to know whats actually
going on inside your Touch.

You can do this by sshing into the Touch and running either ps -aux or
top.

To do this you need to enable ssh on the Touch:
setings>advanced>enable remote access.

This will give you the IP address and password.

Use an SSH client to connect to the Touch as "root". On Windows such a
program is putty.exe, on linux its just ssh, I'm not sure what it is on
Mak. Connect to the touch using the IP address you got when enabling
remote access, it will ask for a password, use the one from above.

This should get you into the Touch. Then just type either ps -aux
 or top

Top gives you the top 20 or so processes and repeats it over and over
until you type 'q'. I'm not sure how well it works on putty though, its
works great using ssh on linux. If top is not working well try ps -aux
(this shows all the process, so you will have to scroll to find the big
ones)

Either of these will tell you the percentage CPU and memory usage each
process is using. This is probably going to be important to tracking
down whats going on with your Touch.

For example on mine when playing 24/96 flac from an external server
only about 40% cpu is being used.

Also, what Swimmer has done is not at all like SB3 bridging. SB3
bridging allows you to connect an Ethernet-only device to the WiFi
network through the Squeezebox, with the Squeezebox making the wireless
connection. In your setup, the other device *does* have a WiFi adapter
and *is *using it. All you're doing is ensuring that Squeezebox <->
Squeezebox Server traffic uses a wired connection.

Plus you're not using the Windows machine as a transparent bridge,
you're using it as a router.

It sounds like a smart setup for you, but it doesn't fulfill the
bridging needs that some users have. :-(

Besides the flickr or Facebook that John mentioned, why not use a USB

The Touch doesn't seem to have the drivers to connect to a windows
share, but it CAN view pictures from flickr or facebook. So you can put
your pictures on flickr and the Touch can display them.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Pseudo-bridge: Touch wired to computer, computer wireless to router

2010-04-16 Thread Swimmerbird123

I've found a way to connect my Touch to my network in a way that
replaces the functionality of the SB3's wireless bridge (at least how
I've been using it), and I am describing it here in case it is of help
to anyone else.

My goal is to run a wired connection between the Touch and my music
library for reliable streaming, and still have a web interface to the
server. If I connect the Touch directly to a USB drive, I don't have
the web interface. And both the Touch and the Windows 7 computer
running the Squeezebox Server software are located too far from my
router to run Ethernet cables to them from the router (although the
computer and Touch are close together).

My solution is to use both the Ethernet and the wireless connections on
my Windows 7 computer at the same time. The computer connects
wirelessly to my home network router in the normal way, giving it full
internet connectivity. And then the Touch is wired directly into the
computer's Ethernet LAN Adapter with a crossover Ethernet cable, in
effect creating a separate router-less two-device network consisting of
the Touch and the computer. And finally, the computer is set to share
its (wireless) internet connection with the 'other computers on its
network' e.g. the Touch.

To do this, first connect the Windows 7 computer to the wireless home
network in the usual way. The router uses DHCP to assign a LAN address
to the computer's wireless adapter.

Second, share the computer's wireless internet connection: In Windows 7
go to the Network and Sharing Center and in the upper left corner click
on 'change adapter settings'. Then right-click on Wireless Network
Connection, left-click 'Properties', click the 'Sharing' tab, and
select 'Allow other network users to share this computer's internet
connection'. [For safety's sake, I also de-select 'Allow other network
users to control or disable the shared internet connection.'] Click OK.
An informational message appears notifying you that the LAN adapter
will automatically be set to a LAN address of 192.168.137.1. [The
actual value may be dependent on your LAN address range.]

Third, you need to set the Touch to connect via Ethernet to the
computer. This will involve manually assigning an IP address to the
Touch [I reserved one for this purpose on the router so that nothing
else conflicts with it] and then telling the Touch to look for the
computer's ethernet LAN address that was just set:

>From the Touch's main menu select Settings, Advanced, Networking,
Choose Network, Connect to Ethernet network. It will try to connect
and be unable to do so, since there is no DHCP involved in the
connection. On the error screen, instead of selecting Try Again, select
"Enter IP information manually". An information screen comes up -
select Continue.

You can then enter the IP address you have reserved for the Touch.
Then press '>' and the default subnet mask 255.255.255.0 appears -
there is no need to change this. Next it will ask you to set the
Default Gateway address. This may come up initially as your router's
address, but change it to the computer's ethernet LAN address that was
automatically set earlier when the internet connection was shared [i.e.
192.168.137.1]. Then the DNS Server also needs to be set to this same
address. The Touch will then try again to connect via Ethernet to the
computer, and it should be successful this time.

The Touch then returns to the Networking screen where you have to
instruct it to find the library at the Ethernet connection you have
just set up: select Remote Libraries, Add New Library, and then enter
the computer's ethernet LAN address [e.g. 192.168.137.001]. Then select
'Connect to this Library'.

Voila! Everything should work now: The Touch can find the computer's
Squeezebox Server on the ethernet connection and stream the library
over it, and it can find the internet by going through the ethernet
connection to the computer's shared wireless connection so that all the
radio functions can work.

Maybe someone finds this useful...

Hm, interesting.
All my self-encoded FLACs are -8, I use WiFi with WPA2 and have around
70% reception.

This currently works fine for me. I have seen it in the past (after
all, I _reported_ that bug up there a few months back) but I don't
experience it now.

I did try both streaming form my "big" server and running TinySC, yet
the latter only with two files. I could even stream these files to my
Transporter from the Touch and sync the two with no issues.

Yet probably I should make sure I try the file again with which I
originally had the issues.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue (& Solution!)

2010-04-16 Thread glenw

It sounds like Andyg & JohnSwenson can't really reproduce the problem
fully as I and some others experience it. It is consistent in my case
and is certainly not just an initial buffer problem.

I took Phil Leigh's advice and tried streaming FLAC as PCM and this
worked fine even at level -8 (which I only used to test the point).

- In my opinion it is a processing load issue on the Touch itself,
could be memory but I think more likely CPU

- in my case it's not WLAN bandwidth/interference/quality. I have
80-90% signal, network test reports 100% OK (although limited to 2Mbps
:-), and I can stream the larger 24/96 PCM data stream perfectly well.

- I am not running any visualisation screen savers, but do have cover
art displayed

- I am not running the in-built server so no memory or scanning
overhead there

- at FLAC -0 everthing is perfect

- at FLAC -3 and higher the stuttering errors appear

- streaming PCM and using my PC server to do the number-crunching (FLAC
decoding) works perfectly at all FLAC levels all the way up to -8

- using a cabled connection works fine at all FLAC levels (no WPA2
decryption overhead at the Touch)

This is not the end of the world as there are several viable
work-arounds that are quite acceptable for most people I suspect. I do
wonder if it is solvable by software tuning/optimisation or if it is
simply a hardware limitation.

[SlimDevices: Touch] image viewer access to network disk?

2010-04-16 Thread ulvi

As far as I can figure out, Touch's image viewer
cannot access any directories other than on the local
disk (or memory card) attached to the device.
Did anyone discover a way to get around this?

Seeing that the screen looks much better than I thought
it would (actually I am impressed with the overall aesthetic
design of the Touch quite a bit; it's a definite step up
from SB3), I am wondering how hard could it be to give
the image viewer access to any disc on the WiFi network.
Surely not that hard? It would be nice to have it function
as a digital picture frame when not playing music.

Don't forget some n00bness here, I thought like this before i figured
it out network=my wifi access piont/router test= testing of said ap's
capacity.

So I believed my 54mB AP could only stream 3000kps as this was what my
SB3 showed me.
Then finally I managed to get the test going on both my SB3 and
receiver at the same time, then I understood what it really measured.

Testing multiple players in parallel is useful in a multiplayer system
with only one AP, if you are unsure of you can stream to 5 player at
the same time for example.

Now I know what it measures but it easy when you don't know soo much.
To read the word "network" and "test" to literately.

I have lesarned more computing on this forum than anywhere else.
I did not need to know anything about wifi before i got a squeezebox I
got my first router 2006 (before that i had adls modem 1 pc 1 port i
did not really knew how it worked) I learned linux to run my own
server, I built my own server.
So before my first squeezebox I was pretty clueless regarding
networking.

[SlimDevices: Touch] No Access to My Apps with internal server

2010-04-16 Thread marlo

Hi,

when my touch is connected to the internal server I get an error
'cannot connect to mysqueezebox.com invalid user or password' (or
similar, my language is german) when I try to access 'My Apps' or the
'App Galery'.
When I connect to my whs squeezebox server or directly to
mysqueezebox.com after stopping the internal server I can access both
without problem.
I don't know where to enter my msb account data for the internal
server. I was only asked once at initial setup and entered the data
correctly as I can access mbs when the internal server is off.

Any ideas?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume control

2010-04-16 Thread toby10

Very long shot on the Touch's home menu does it say "Touch" at the
top of the screen?
If it says anything else then your Touch is trying to control the
volume of another player.

Also, when you say the IR remote does not adjust volume, does it
activate the pop-up screen showing the volume changing (but just not
audibly)?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network test on Touch does not go above 2000kbps

2010-04-16 Thread Triode

I'm confused by the comment on "network test" being a bad name...

The current test, tests the network performance from the server to the
selected player. This shows whether there is enough network bandwidth
in your home network to stream at this rate to the player. I think
this is all that can actually be tested. It is the most useful measure
for playback of local files from the server (which was the dominant use
case when it was written)

The problem with network test readings is the way it currently works -
it can read low due to lack of cpu power on server or client rather
than lack of network capacity. The original limitation came from the
fact that its a server only plugin and I had no access to the player
firmware to add any code. With Squeezeplay devices I now have access
to the firmware and can think about this again. Given a low power cpu
at the client end and a possibly low power cpu at the server end, the
current method is always going to be an approximation. I hope it does
provide some useful information though...

Samba is always running (sharing the system's log files), but you have
to enable the sharing of the attached drive or SD card.

Settings > Advanced > USB & SD Storage > Sharing > Enable Sharing

You might also clear the sharing password while you're at it if you
don't need the extra security of password protecting the share.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue (& Solution!)

2010-04-16 Thread JohnSwenson

I ran a bunch of tests last night, 16/44.1 wav, and flac with flac -0 -5
and -8 and 24/96 in both wav, flac -0 -5 and -5. I tried this with
external server running both wireless and on USB flash stick.

Of all these combinations I only had ONE issue, and that only happened
once. The first time I played 24/96 file from the USB stick, it took a
long time (5 seconds or so) before it started to play. The second time
I played it it worked fine. Everything else worked perfectly. I
couldn't even get anything to stutter, although I have heard it before,
I could not get it to do it now.

I also tried the spectrum analyzer and the VU meters durng all these
and they worked fine with no affect on the music whatsoever.

I tried the whole shebang several times and it worked perfectly.

I did eventually figure out the one issue I had and could sort of
repeat it. It only happened the first time I tried to play a 24/96
after a full scan of the USB device. Any starting of the server
thereafter does not run the full scan and it works fine. My guess is
that the full scan takes some extra memory which when a playpack
situation happens which takes more memory some behind the scenes memory
management is going on to free up some more memory which causes the
delay or stuttering.

If you are running off a USB or SD drive after a full rescan you might
want try ejecting the drive, rebooting and starting up again and seeing
if that works better rather than trying to play music right after a full
scan.

BTW just having an SD card or USB stick plugged in causes the server to
run, even if you are not playing music off it. If you are having
problems with hi-rez playback from an external server you might want to
make sure you don't have a USB stick or SD card plugged in. If the
builtin server is not running there is tons of free memory available.

My guess on the compression issue is that its not related to whether a
particular encoding takes more processor power, I think its more
related to amount of free memory available. The code necessary to
decode the -8 encoding might take more memory which if you are right on
the edge of running out might push it over the edge. So doing things
like not playing right after a full scan might help. Not using cover
art might help. (there is a now playing screen without cover art, you
can try using that and see if it helps)

there to ?
Why is not anyone picking it up and sell Squeezeboxes there ?

The AVR scenario I see this being an issue is if a S/PDIF port expansion
device is used as these tend to be auto sensing in nature. But you are
right, my request is targeting a small audience. My real beef here is
that a feature has been removed from a product that is advertised as a

So you think that these devices, once finalized and ready for
production, are all of a sudden available in mass quantities?

Or do you not realize that a company can't have enough for everyone
right away and will put priorities to where they will sell the most.
They are, after all, doing this to make a profit, and as much of it and

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Disable audio outputs when off?

2010-04-16 Thread toby10

Yes, and that's how I use my SB3, digital outs to an AVR.

But why would I need to turn off it's digital outs to an AVR?
- turn off AVR when done
- switch inputs on AVR for a different source
- auto-switch / auto-sensing inputs on AVR (if I shared inputs)
- manually switch inputs (if I shared inputs)

AVR's have so many different inputs that most go unused and rarely need
to be shared.

Or maybe there is an AVR input scenario I'm not thinking of?

Still seems to me the vast majority of people wanting/needing this
feature are the very few standalone DAC users.

Views to votes sure seems to side with my analogy of low interest. :)
