viewtube Why the hell haven't I heard of this before? I could never get linterna magica to work, and the video streaming sites that gnash supports is basically limited to youtube. Now I can watch youtube, dailymotion etc in HD without flash! Most impressed, will definitely add this to the wiki.

Who wants it will keep it, who doesn't will stop it. What should be the default is a topic for a long discussion. It is a shame that most JS doesn't have a license linked to it That is because by definition (copyrights law) most are proprietary software. It does not matter that the source might be provided (if not obfuscated) as a side effect of the JavaScript language. I'm excluding free software JavaScript libraries. The Epiphany extension I've mentioned for example came to life when I was still using Google search and they've introduced the annoying auto complete while you type. With that they made all links in the results wrapped inside a JavaScript function which broke the open-in-new-tab-on-middle-or-wheel-click functionality. I've wrote the extension merely because I needed a faster way to enable/disable the JavaScript engine on demand. There is always a reason to stop JavaScript. extensions like LibreJS need to be better for the ideology to succeed. Perhaps it is. :-) I haven't tried tried LibreJS because I'm used to having JS enabled entirely (and I have for the past year). To elaborate on why I dislike JavaScript a little more though: As a perfect example, Facebook misuses JavaScript in a way that's rather sneaky. All external links from Facebook have /onmouseover/ events which change the external link to it's actual destination (eg. http://example.com/) but an /onclick/ event changes it to a tracking link (https://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fexample.com). Currently it is easy disable this using a small JavaScript, but if people did this Facebook could (further) obfuscate their scripts and make it more difficult. Other example would be Facebook hovercards (when a user hovers over someone's name) an AJAX request informs Facebook of that event. JavaScript should be left alone for everyone else. But I still think an option should be available to disable it.

Of course - I don't use Facebook and I encourage others to give it up as well. But with JavaScript it's quite easy for any website to misuse JS. For any website which people reveal themselves on, that's potentially problematic.

And what about Cloud VPS Servers ? The good in that is the idea behind the Pay what you use thing that is seriously smiling at me. I'm not sure it is possible :s.. Even if they have the same base, there is a lot of change in the background so you may see more breakage than anything else (and also a lot of unavailable packages when updating). Your Debian is Free just after you installed it, the only solution to become non-free is to enable the Contrib and non-free servers (since they use their own meaning of Free Software to select which package will be in which repository, that is not totally compatible with the FSF meaning of Free Software). The Debian Kernel is Free and all the packages in main are also as free. So just don't enable the rest of the repositories and (if I'm not wrong) you are good to go :D

Thanks for the information :D I seriously don't see any problems with EXT4 to be honest. The only if that I see is when I try to extract a 7GB iso from multiple .rar or .zip files and it takes 11minutes where on the same Operating System, with the same techniques and tools but using an NTFS partition, it takes 3minutes. Other than that I don't see any problem or issue :D

Debian is free by default, AFAIK. However, Debian still has some issues: * On boot Debian alerts users to non-free firmware that they don't have. * Debian installation apparently sometimes leads users to non-free repositories. * I'm unsure if Iceweasel (Debian web browser) is packaged with non-free recommendations removed or not. Changing Debian's repositories for Trisquel's is a good recipe for problems! If you are using Debian Stable, the versions of the system libraries are older than those of Trisquel. If you use Debian Testing/Unstable, it is the opposite. Some applications expect some recent version of the system libraries...

IMHO everybody here need to search one web hosting company with free software values. Like Gandi, all2all, Positive Internet and others. Linode, OVH, Godaddy are company without this. They recommend many non-free softwares and them uses free software only for technical reasons.

Trisquel is Ubuntu-based, not Debian-based. Changing the repositories will result in problems. Debian is fully free anyway, so there is no non-free software in the standard Debian repository. Only the repositories that can be activated after installation manually can contain non-free firmware and maybe some other non-free stuff. Debian is not recommended by the FSF because Iceweasel recommends non-free plugins and add-ons and because you can activate repositories with non-free software easily.

As andrew said Debian is 100% free by default, but recommends non-free software and Iceweasel recommends non-free addons from Mozilla page. The same with Fedora. Fedora is free and recommends only free software but has non-free firmware by default on Linux. You can install Linux-libre and remove all the non-free firmwares but has the Firefox problem with non-free addons too.

Eeeehm, how can I say this: Mixing repositories of different distributions is the best way to get a screwed up system. May be second close to remove /etc and /usr on your PC. You need to understand this: Any Linux distro of a certain version is somehwat of a software eco-system. Packages are build with certain asumptions in regard to available versions, libs, etc. You might get away by interchanging repos between Trisquel and the corresponding Ubuntu Release. May be even with using repos from other distribs being based on the same Ubuntu version as Trisquel (e.g. Mint). But you will never get away mixing things between lets say Debian 6, Ubuntu 11.04 and Trisquel 5.5.

Spare the lecture. All I was saying is that a benefit of JavaScript is the universal support of it. Much like when you go to a web site and every browser supports JPEG, PNG, and CSS. While it is true that people can abuse JavaScript and it is even worse to check the code when it is minified, what is the REAL issue at hand? I say this becuase if you use the jQuery framework to code JavaScript, and stick to using the built in features (like .addClass for example), there is nothing stopping you from looking at the source code at http://code.jquery.com/jquery.js and finding out what addClass actually does. It actually benefits the tin foil hat crowd if sites use a JS framework due to the functions having documentation. Turning off JavaScript entirely? I remember how websites were in 1996/1997 and I really don't want to return to those archaic dark ages. If you are a web developer and getting paid to create a uniform experience for a client, you want to support features that are on the most used browsers. Of course this thread is turning into another one of those user vs developer discussions that is blown out of proportion.

The work done is quite simple. They take the Ubuntu version, passe it under a filter of non-free software (men work) and then change the packages that they want to change. So as a short example. Trisquel 6.0 will be Ubuntu 12.04 but without non-free content (firmware, drivers, software etc..) and with only a few software modified (like Gnome with small changes in order to have the wonderful DE that we have today in all of our Trisquel Installations by default, and the personalized gnome-control-center etc...). My guess is that it'll require non-free firmware for wi-fi/bluetooth (if present), and non-free drivers for the GPU. So, it might work, but there will be a lot of functionality missing. Again, just a guess.

The youtube-dl updater has replaced itself with a HTML page (most likely 404) instead of another youtube-dl program. Probably the best way to solve it would be to delete that youtube-dl binary and redownload from the youtube-dl website, manually.

HI! IT IS ACTUALLY HARD SINCE okay now it is better :D As I was saying, It is actually hard since there is no linux-libre kernel for ARM Device, this need to be created, but no one will create one on an ARM machine that needs non-free drivers of firmwares in order to work. So, if you have time and skills, you can find a Ubuntu version working on that machine and after that just try to compile a libre kernel for ARM (hard work indeed !). So to simplify that. If you don't know how to do it, and the device needs non-free software to work, then you are out of luck (this is why I don't buy a Raspberry Pi yet, even if I can do the work of porting Trisquel to it, it won't serve much because even I won't use it xD).

Ubuntu takes the packages in Debian testing's repository and modifies quite a lot of them (all packages with a version ending with -ubuntu[0-9.]*). During this time, Debian testing continues updating the packages from upstream. By the Ubuntu release, many system packages are newer in Debian testing than in Ubuntu. With Trisquel, the difference is even greater since the release happens about six months after the related Ubuntu release. As for Debian stable, the package versions are frozen for years, whereas Ubuntu/Trisquel are released every six months. It is the opposite problem.
