Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel CEO Refuses To Answer Questions On Whether NSA Can Access Processors
They were on the list (or at least some of the officials were), but nearer the bottom of the list than the top. I'm more concerned about malware and attacks on infrastructure etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DSA, El Gamal, or RSA? SHA-256, or SHA-512? At minimum or at maximum strength?
RSA for both or separate RSA subkeys for signing and for encryption. SHA-512 is safer than SHA-256, while it's slower and has twice bigger hashes (not an issue for signatures: RSA already needs big signatures). DSA is less popular, more complex and usually needs randomness for signing. If multiple signatures are made with bad randomness, an attack can recover the private key from it: it's bad and not possible with RSA. DSA is usually used with 1024 bit keys, these are weak. RSA with 4096 bit keys or larger might be safe enough for near future. (RSA here refers to the algorithm, not the insecure company.) pgpTcJ7HR4AKl.pgp Description: PGP signature

Well, now that it's free software, we can easily remove all this stuff, right? So I think that's no problem at all.

Omg could this mean that somebody is spying on us?? And that we can't trust intel?? I really heard more surprising news in my live.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DSA, El Gamal, or RSA? SHA-256, or SHA-512? At minimum or at maximum strength?
I like DSA, and definitely El-Gamal for encryption. I wasn't aware of the entropy problem with DSA, but it doesn't affect me as I have an external source of entropy. If you're worried about it, I can recommend this product: http://www.entropykey.co.uk/ It has completely free drivers that are included in Debian and Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] SSH Server Enabled By Default!
Thanks for the fix, G4JC. I agree that this is a major security vuln, and I'm kicking myself for not noticing it sooner. I use SSH to make outgoing connections to my server, but I have absolutely no reason to run the server daemon on my desktop, and certainly would never use password-based authentication(!!!). I can't understand why this is enabled by default - it's exactly the kind of functionality that anyone who needs it knows how to install and enable it. I hope it's removed promptly from future versions.

You are right. However, for a full desktop, one wants to install as well the recommended packages: $ sudo apt-get install trisquel trisquel-recommended $ sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini trisquel-mini-recommended $ sudo apt-get install triskel triskel-recommended

Thank you, it works like a charm. Sorry, but is this firmware packaged for Trisquel? And, can I change the kernel without problems?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
That is pretty easy to prove. Just find the proper bug report (opened in 2009) in chromium's issues: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=28291 It depends on many other bugs listed on the left side of the page.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
According to Debian's site (http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/ch-intro.en.html#s1.1), the creation of Debian was sponsored by the FSF's GNU project for one year (November 1994 to November 1995). It then deviated (although far less than any other popular GNU/Linux distribution) from the FSF's ideals.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
See my reply below regarding the updated coreboot image (plus source code).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
I've tested this on a drive that had the USB Mass Storage request failed bug. Now it works perfectly. I've also tested Trisquel Mini ISO. The parse options also boot that (directly from GRUB, without seabios), without having to type any commands. When selecting Parse it switches to a new GRUB menu with all the isolinux.cfg entries converted to GRUB entries. Next I'll test this on a USB DVD drive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help with the thinkpenguin wireless USB adapter N
No the firmware is not packed for Trisquel 6.0. Trisquel 6.0.1 comes with a newer version of linux-libre and preinstalled firmware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
It will remain unchanged but now you can easily change the default grub.cfg using cbfstool (the config is in CBFS now). I will write a tutorial about this at some point. cbfstool is included in coreboot source code, until ./util I have another update planned: Next update planned: - enumerate list of all ISO's on the root of a flash drive, generate menu entries for loopback mounting and booting those directly. - automatically use scan and boot the 1st menu by default* *an error appears, because the wrong prefix is set. (there are modules that most distro grub configs try to load, which aren't included in the grub payload) (the idea is to test it by setting the prefix in GRUB to use the modules provided by the distro) I think you can fix this by setting the right prefix to use the grub modules on the HDD instead of in the boot flash. I'll be testing this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
The instructions are in FLASH_INSTRUCTION (file): WARNING! Updating your firmware has a risk of bricking the machine. You have been warned, and do so at your own risk. also see: README --- this assumes that you already have coreboot running and are updating it. put coreboot.rom in the flashrom directory (coreboot.rom is in ./coreboot/build) a flashrom executable is already compiled for convenience. so if you don't want to compile, just make sure it has execute permission: chmod +x ./flashrom or if you want to compile it again: make clean make --- with coreboot.rom in the flashrom directory, do this: sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom -- or this command, if 3 flash chips are detected (in the case of X60's with the macronix flashchip): sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom -c MX25L1605D/MX25L1608D shut down your machine after it says VERIFIED. Note: you can also use the flashrom version provided by your distro. Note: look in README for flashrom dependencies.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Coreboot to boot USB
Yes! I read it. But don't understand what I've to do. Or It doesn't work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
Tested gdnewhat. Doesn't work but you can now use cat. So you can use, eg: cat (usb0)/isolinux/isolinux.cfg It might link to another .cfg file. So cat that instead. Then get the options, and adapt them. For example, I found the menu entry in there with those options on the APPEND line. Then I found where those vmlinuz and initrd Then you do (with those options): linux (usb0)/isolinux/vmlinuz0 root=live:CDLABEL=hatrack20 rootfstype=auto ro rd.live.image quiet rhgb rd.luks=0 rd.md=0 rd.dm=0 initrd (usb0)/isolinux/initrd0.img boot You can boot any distro, but not all of them work properly with the parser so in those cases you still hvae to do it manually. That is how I manually booted the ISO. This is necessary in those cases where the parse options don't work properly. (for example, it couldn't boot gdnewhat or gnewsense - but it worked with Trisquel Mini, Trisuel and Parabola) (usb0) means I'm assuming you used dd on the flash drive directly, and not on a partition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Coreboot to boot USB
For those who are reading this, this assumes you already have coreboot. This won't work if you have Lenovo BIOS (there are some extra steps involved). -- wget http://gluglug.org.uk/X60/release/3/X60_source.tar.gz Here is what I did: tar -xf X60_source.tar.gz cd X60_source/flashrom or cd X60_binary/flashrom Note: I already have flashrom dependencies installed. Get the list in README. make clean make cp ../coreboot/build/coreboot.rom . Note: if you downloaded X60_binary.tar.gz, do this instead: cp ../coreboot.rom . sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom If it shows *VERIFIED* written at the end, then it worked. At this point, shut down the machine (shut it down fully! Do not sleep/reboot). --- If you didn't see that output above, you will have seen this instead: $ sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom [sudo] password for user: flashrom v0.9.7-r on Linux 3.12.4-gnu (i686) flashrom is free software, get the source code at http://www.flashrom.org Calibrating delay loop... So I do this instead (on my X60): sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom -c MX25L1605D/MX25L1608D And then I see that same successful output as above: $ sudo ./flashrom -p internal -w coreboot.rom -c MX25L1605D/MX25L1608D flashrom v0.9.7-r on Linux 3.12.4-gnu (i686) flashrom is free software, get the source code at http://www.flashrom.org Calibrating delay loop... Re: [Trisquel-users] Help with the thinkpenguin wireless USB adapter N
Sorry, but is this firmware packaged for Trisquel? Yes, and it comes with the system updates, but that firmware is kind of outdated now (version 1.3 vs 1.4). If you want to test the latest development code, you can download pre-built binaries here. From my testing, this adapter (TPE-N150USB) was causing me frequent network drops, and even _system crashes_, and after a circa 3/4 year of usage I definitely cannot recommend it. Once I switched the internal wireless card at the end of December 2013, all my troubles regarding wireless disappeared, and to date I've not experienced a single problem. If you want a better solution, take an AR5B22 based card from eBay. Regarding the firmwares, they are packaged in Trisquel under the following names: * ath9k_htc is packaged as open-ath9k-htc-firmware * carl9170 is packaged as firmware-carl9170 * ar9170usb (deprecated, replaced by carl9170) is packaged as atheros-firmware And, can I change the kernel without problems? Yes. From my testing, the kernel driver was whitelisted since these releases (tested on a 64-bit system): * linux-image-3.2.0-45-generic, and later * linux-image-3.5.0-34-generic, and later All later kernels (e.g. linux-image-3.11.0-xx-generic), including vanilla Linux-libre kernels should work too.

[Trisquel-users] Brány Skeldalu (aka The Gates of Skeldal) is ready for testing
Most of you probably doesn't heard about this game, developed by a Czech company called Napoleon Games, and first released for DOS in 1998. It's a old-school type of a dungeon crawler resembling games like Stonekeep, or Legend of Grimrock. It's the second most downloaded RPG (after Diablo) in the Czech Republic, and one of my favourite game (I still have the boxed version in my showcase :^) A little bit of history After the initial release, and a smaller re-release two years later, the game was ported in 2005 on MS Windows by one of the original developers. In 2007 it was re-released as freeware, and in the next year, the source code was opened up, and released on SourceForge under the GNU General Public License, version 3.0. Later that year, one of the fans started working on a GNU/Linux port and eventually succeeded to make the game working in 2009. Since then, a lot of bugs was fixed and the game is now pretty stable. The last update to this port is dated from March 2011. In 2014, after a successful campain on Startovač (a Kickstarter equivalent in Czech Republic), an Android port was made available by the main developer of the game. This port doesn't have the source released. During the development, the game also had an English version, but it was lost, and since then only the dialogs were recovered, and included in the English translation which was never fully finished. Meantime… When I discovered this year that the game was liberated, I made an effort to bring this piece of gaming history to a wider audience by documenting the building and setup process, and already played through the half of the game to check its playability. Currently I'm also in contact with the developer of the port to solve the remaining issues. Anybody can help just by playing the game, and reporting problems on the bug tracker (in Czech/Slovak or English), and if you really like the game, there is also the English translation that really needs some love. So show your support and please make some bug reports (I'm really counting on you guys, so prove that this community is worth more than just a bunch of overgrown kids, spending their time trolling here, and doesn't contributing anything useful). Not to forget, all the neccessary information is available on this page.
[Trisquel-users] Problems to play HD and HFR videos.
Hello. I have a ATI Radeon HD 4250, but running Debian 7.3 I don't use proprietary drivers. I have been finding it almost impossible to play HD or HFR videos with this system. I was aware that playing any games requiring 3d acceleration would be very hard, nearly impossible, but always thought it would at least work with some simple videos. I use SMplayer, with the option to jump frames on, and with 5000KB of cache for local files. Anything that I can do to improve my situation? I would prefer to stay using Linux-Libre 3.2, which is the standard for this Debian release, but if upgrading will solve the problem, I will :) Or if there is any other software that I could use to play videos smoothly... I am open to suggestions :) Which graphics cards do you guys use and work well with free software when playing HD and HFR videos?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are fonts software?
Technically possible and legal in the U.S. because font faces can't be copyrighted here (not so for some other countries, like the U.K.). Might result in a loss of quality if it's not done carefully, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems to play HD and HFR videos.
That's what I was thinking :( If it was a desktop, I would have no problem. But with a laptop, I can't really replace the graphics card. Which, by the way, is a very powerful one, I admit. I remember when I used to have the proprietary drivers, I could play very graphic intense games, it was able to play HD stuff very well, all of that... the problem is really the lack of a proper free driver. One of these days, I discovered that even using the HDMI to connect to a TV was basically... impossible. I was thinking that maybe I could get around by using some lighter software (I don't know if SMplayer is heavy on the machine or not) that could play those using only the CPU and not using the graphic card so much... But apparently no :( Thanks anyway Onpon4.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems to play HD and HFR videos.
If the videos being HD isn't needed, you could of course size the videos down. WinFF can do that, and I'm sure there are others.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Brány Skeldalu (aka The Gates of Skeldal) is ready for testing
I'm attaching some screenshots. I also found this YouTube video that can provide some insight to the game looks and its mechanics (omit the bug appearing on the character creation screen since it's not available in the GNU/Linux port): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RiLf8CKHjM
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are fonts software?
You can do it losslessly! I happen to have considered this myself, and I've even done it with a few chess fonts. However, I had obtain permission from the creator of one, who had licensed it for non-commercial use only. What you would do is make a drawing in Inkscape using all the font's characters, convert the text to paths, and save that SVG file. This is perfectly legal; some foundries even have an explicit clause You may import characters from the font as graphical objects into a drawing program and modify such graphical objects. Then you would copy those outlines into FontForge (the two programs support copy/pasting to each other). And then you would generate the font. You could analyze the old font's OpenType features in FontForge and recreate them in the new font. This whole process could even be automated. But it would take a not insignificant amount of work, depending on the number of glyphs in the font, and even then I wouldn't guarantee legal safety. I imagine that if we started doing this en masse, the foundries would complain and sue us. Even if we won, they would probably work together to introduce a new DRM-encumbered font format immune to our wizardry.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems to play HD and HFR videos.
To play 1080p videos you'll need the following (tested on Trisquel 6.0 32bits): * processor: 2.7Ghz (I guess about 2.3Ghz would be OK too). * Graphics Card: 32MB video RAM (it can be shared memory, I've tested with shared memory, obviously onboard card). Decent CUDA and base clock speed. * Memory: 512MB DDR2 800Hzs (using 64bits OS will need more RAM | better using 2 x 256MB). * North and South bridge with sufficient speed. * Gnome Player as in Trisquel default. Most of the videos will play good but at some part like a lot of rain plus quick movements it could not run smoothy but after that it can recover from that. Unfortunately the best HD video player is non free and for Windows (MPC) because it makes a good use of codecs. Linux best player for this is GNome Player. Worst player ever for this is VLC (also in Windows). * Drivers: I dunno. I've always played with drivers working and nVIDIA chipsets. I'll try not using neuvou drivers and update it here. Aboove the specifics I mention before everyone should be fine but I can't say on ATI or Intel if that needs are the same for those graphic cards. BTW: Post more specifications on the hardware you're running. On HD videos and HRF is not about capcity, it's about speed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are fonts software?
However, I had obtain permission from the creator of one, who had licensed it for non-commercial use only. Is the law different in Canada than in the U.S.? I imagine that if we started doing this en masse, the foundries would complain and sue us. What for? I've never purchased a font, so I'm not sure if you have to sign a EULA restricting this activity or not. By the way, what is a chess font?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are fonts software?
It had nothing to do with the laws of Canada. The license restricted commercial use, so I presumed that would apply to the images created with the font. The last the author of FontForge, George Williams, checked, in Canada the design of fonts can be protected for five years. I believe there is also a kind of patent that can be applied to them. However, I am not a lawyer, and cannot make any guarantees about this. If you actually wished to undertake this, it would be best to buy exclusively from American foundries and ensure that any legal issue relating to the typefaces be governed by American law. Even so, the foundries would definitely not like that we're using a loophole in the law to deprive them of income, and they'd at least try to sue. Every proprietary foundry has its own EULA, some more restrictive than others. You know those fonts like Webdings or Wingdings? Symbol fonts? A chess font is like those, but with characters suitable for creating diagrams and figurine notation. With the advent of SVGs and diagram creation programs, that need is nearly obsolete.
