[Trisquel-users] I freed my phone!!!
Hey everybody! I'm really happy right now because my plan to free my smartphone worked!! I had an galaxy s4 and decided to sell it and buy a galaxy s2 instead. When i finally got it, i installed replicant on it - it was very easy!! Actually i imagined the whole process to be a lot more time consuming and complicated; i encourage everybody to do the same thing, it's just such an awesome feeling. Can't tell how much it bothered me that all this proprietary shit was running on my device and i wasn't even allowed to remove certain applications; that's over now! and i feel very... privileged I would say. Like, i'm one of very few people that own a phone with an 100% free operating system; a phone that doesn't treat my like dirt, as least when it comes to the OS. It's true, running a phone with a free os means sacrificing a lot more functionality than running a freed pc; but honestly, do i really need all this stuff? Replicant looks really nice, feels stable and smooth and i can do a lot with it, like navigation (OsmAnd), making voip calls (webrtc), browse the internet (even with tor), check the weather... As soon as i got my owncloud running again, i think things will be quite convenient. Next problem is my tablet... a lot more difficult than my phone. Currently i'm wondering if i really need this device or if a galaxy tab 2 with replicant would be acceptable for me. It's kind of hard... no videos whatsoever, slow 2d graphics... a tablet with cyanogenmod is another option, but i think the non-free components would just bother me too much. I just know that i can't accept the current situation... i don't even have root access for this device and the google play store is running all the time! I like watching anime really much, and well, in fullhd that's just awesome... But i really wonder whether i need this on my tablet so bad. Anyway, if you think about freeing your phone, just do it! It feels GREAT!

No, there are no replicant devices that can play videos at the moment :/ not a single one even supports wifi...

Re: [Trisquel-users] I freed my phone!!!
Congratz! :) I think it's kind of fair to consider the lack of features a good thing- too often do I see people that take out their phones every couple of seconds, even during conversations. PS: You could get some manga to supplement the lack of anime, either by actual print copies or by scanlations on the phone's web-browser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I freed my phone!!!
nicely done quantum!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Volume Filesystem Root Warning, lack of space and huge log files
My dad also encountered something like this when he upgraded to Trisquel 7 (by using the option to upgrade to the new release). He ended up reverting back to Trisquel 6. Maybe the release upgrade is leaving behind stuff that shouldn't be there?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Basic security questions
If freedom is your goal and you're willing to make some compromises (like running a proprietary bios) then you can use a smartphone, but you should buy a phone that is supported by replicant. Cyanogenmod is besides replicant afaik the best choice at the moment; at least your system is rooted. Remove the google play store and install f-droid instead; remove all proprietary apps and run only free ones. Of course, using replicant is much better and i would recommend that! Now, if you're really concerned about privacy - if you're a journalist or political activist, for instance - then don't use any cellphone. I think the only thing you can use under those circumstances is a thinkpad with a free bios, a replaced wifi card which doesn't require any non-free components and tails as an operating system. Tails ships with proprietary firmware so you really have to watch out that your device won't use it, i.e. that every component works with free firmware. Still you will be vulnerable to hardware backdoors and a few pieces of proprietary firmware on the device, such as the hard disk firmware. Considering all that, i actually would advice against using any pc or any technology whatsoever - if you really can't make any compromise when it comes to privacy.

well. now i'm confused.. rainteller we are no longer friends! :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Volume Filesystem Root Warning, lack of space and huge log files
No, that's not normal. You can delete the logs (they're there for your information only) but first you should see what's filling them up to help you avoid this in the future. One thing that is filling the root partition are old kernels, you probably want to get rid of those as well. And the APT cache can get pretty large, can't remember whether it's enabled by default or not.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless won't work :-(
I ran into this on a Dell E6500 so I took out the WiFi card that was installed internally and bought an Atheros for about $15 on amazon. It installed in the same slot and was detected instantly. Look on H-node for supported chipsets and make sure you buy the right style card for your machine.

Re: [Trisquel-users] My router is now running LibreCMC
For one thing looks like it's using Linux. So, you get an assortment of non-free firmware. No wonder most people believe Linux is entirely GPL'd because that's what they claim! https://www.kernel.org/category/faq.html#is-linux-kernel-free-software Yet it contains binary blobs with all kind of crazy licenses https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/tree/firmware/WHENCE
Re: [Trisquel-users] Achieving native 1680x1050 resolution in Syncmaster 2253BW monitor
Until this afternoon, I was despondent and whined: Just where do I find the specific download of a Trisquel-compatible driver for this Intel D865GLC mobo's integrated graphics at the Intel.com website ? ... until a short while (about an hour) after the anticipated motherboard arrived. I swapped the various drives, transferred my two memory modules purchased for the HP 6430NX, hunted down an extra affixing screw for this slightly larger board, found all the appropriate sockets scattered hither yon, and got it all together with nothing left over. The Intel D865GLC motherboard fit in place of the HP 6430NX's motherboard with only an extra screw hole, and there is even a socket for that, would you believe. After a short pause at the BIOS settings, Trisquel booted up with nary a complaint, and _voila_ ! got the desired resolution in the SyncMaster 2253BW monitor: 1680x1050. No additional drivers for which to search. Nice ! Thanks to all who steered me in the correct directions. Got it all done for half the $200+/- that *icro *enter would have charged me for their oft-advertised but not-in-stock Linux desktop model. This Trisquel installation is now fully free, except for the three now-superfluous but functional graphics cards, one of which I can return.

May I suggest you read these books to strengthen your resolve. I guess the bio would be the lighter reading to get you started. I found both books excellent. http://shop.fsf.org/product/book_bundle/ (Buy them if you have the money, download if you don't.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost Internet Connection upon upgrading to Trisquel 7
Thanks. I have never added anything from any repository. I am using wired (DSL). I still have my 6 live media (DVD). And, yes, when I used it live, it did connect to the Internet. I will try the lspci command when I get home from work in 3.5 hours. (The only kernel I use is the one that Trisquel has and sends updates for.) Also, I think I will experiment with DHCP versus PPPoE settings, etc.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Problem with the output to the external Monitor
You could try a more recent kernel taken from Jason Self's repository: http://jxself.org/linux-libre/ I doubt it would change anything but it is worth a try.
[Trisquel-users] ChromiumOS
What exactly is non-free about ChromiumOS? I presume the kernel is, but I can't find anything else.
[Trisquel-users] Tutanota - finally, an alternative to OpenMailBox!
Already for some time, OpenMailBox was the only email service provider available that combined the convenience of free personal accounts with ethical aspects by running exclusively on free software (Roundcube for webmail, and OwnCloud for cloud storage). Yesterday, I have learnt about a German startup called Tutanota which provides an end-to-end encrypted webmail client and email service, similar what Mailpile is trying to achieve. The registration is very simple and the web interface is clean and elegant. More info: https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/secure-email-provider-tutanota-open-source/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
If you're using the standard GNOME edition of Trisquel, there should be a program called Update Manager that pops up.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Basic security questions
Whenever you're tempted by a proprietary application, look for alternatives. For example, you could've installed Chromium, the Free Software version of Chrome. (Although it recommends proprietary plugins. Beware.)

Can you write more about the hard drive firmware issue? How can it compromise security? Can the firmware on a hard drive, or any other hardware firmware initiate fx keylogging and spying on files? If the https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-laptop gets fsf approval, then it will have to do without a hard drive, because the hard drive may compromise the computer as such?

Re: [Trisquel-users] No picture in guvcview
Did you get one or more error messages when starting guvcview in a terminal? Out of curiosity, I will install it on a 64bit machine this weekend to see what happens.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No picture in guvcview
It might help if you include the hardware that you are trying this on. I recall getting a very similar error on an Asus EEE 1001P for the default configuration on guvcview, but unfortunately I did not have time to chase this issue at the time and I not longer have that laptop ( I was able to view camera output in vlc and that was the only thing I tried ). I am currently using guvcview on a Samsung-NP530U4B and it's working very well on the default configuration.
[Trisquel-users] Terminal and Nautius hang
Hope somebody out there has some thoughts I have recently started using Trisquel, love the design but after a week I am having one issue. There are times when either the terminal or nautilus give me a starting ... prompt and then disappear and don't open. If I reboot everything is ok for a while but eventually happens again. I thought it might be the hard drive but a scan says it is ok. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes. If the https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-laptop gets fsf approval, then it will have to do without a hard drive, because the hard drive may compromise the computer as such? No. There is already one laptop with fsf recommendation and it comes with a hard disk. https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom Of course having free firmware for the hard disk would be ideal. I don't think such a thing exists now.
[Trisquel-users] Wireless won't work :-(
Hi! I just upgraded to a new computer and immediately installed Trisquel! While everything seems to be working fine, my wireless card doesn't seem to be recognized My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6420 and the network card is Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (that's what the command lspci | grep net gave me back) I know that some people will recommend me to buy the usb stick ThinkPenguin but before even thinking about that, I was wondering if anybody had experienced the same problem and if a fix is available ? I don't want to have to install a non-free driver or distro but at the same time I understand that Wi-Fi is a big problem when it comes to non-free drivers. Thanks FredB
Re: [Trisquel-users] I freed my phone!!!
What about the out-of-stock Openmoko + GTA04 processor?
Re: [Trisquel-users] My router is now running LibreCMC
I bought a couple of LibreCMC routers from ThinkPenguin for use where I work. I plan on using them as access points. So far I really like them and they've been worth the price.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I freed my phone!!!
Great news fellow! We're still waiting for a fully free smartpone!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Basic security questions
Thanks for the tipp with Replicant. Maybe in one or two weeks I will be test it. But actually I think the big security problem is ME. I fight against me to not install non-free software Today I install chrome for one hour and removed it again... Is now my system broken? This example shows me, that I have to learn so many things that a secure system is actually not possible for me, because I am not clever enough to use it. But at the end I will try very hard to work with Trisquel only with free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My router is now running LibreCMC
A lot of articles I have read about OpenWRT not being fully Free has said that it contains nonfree stuff/blobs.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless won't work :-(
Hi! I am in the same situation! Unfortunately, Intel wifi cards don't have free drivers so you'll have to go with a USB dongle. I myself got one. Have a look on h-node if you can't afford a ThinkPenguin dongle, some models hardly cost anything and work with Trisquel out of the box. I don't have a clue what's the difference between Openmoko and GTA04, and how you can combine them, but the latter one doesn't support media encoding according to http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ReplicantStatus And no offense to anyone, but it looks... not acceptable to me... http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/GTA04 And actually i don't really need video on a phone. Rather on a tablet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Basic security questions
I know what you mean, but i'm afraid the answer is: none! You can meet with people in real life ;) When it comes to privacy, our technology is spoiled from the very bottom... it's just the way the internet and pc's are designed nowadays. But i'm talking about no-compromise-whatsoever- kind of privacy. You can have decent privacy with computers if your friends care about privacy too, at least decent for the average guy. If you want to exchange really 100% secure messages for instance, you can use the so called one time pad encryption; it is mathematically proven to be 100% secure and cannot be cracked, no matter what computational power the evesdropper has got. However, you have to transmit the key in real life, and the key has to be as long as the message! and you have to encrypt the message in real life as well... so... it's no fun to use :P

Re: [Trisquel-users] ChromiumOS
Jadedctrl I believe your question should be, What is exactly is chromioum os is? Is it free-libre, the code open to all, could it be modified? Propietary or not propietary, the following research that will be post it, will indicate the proper answer. 1- Definition - What does Chrome Operating System (Chrome OS) mean? The Chrome operating system (Chrome OS) is an operating system launched by Google that is designed for users who spend a large amount of their time on the Internet using Web applications. It is designed around the key tenets of pace, ease-of-use and security. Because this OS is exclusively aimed at intensive Web users, the only application included in Chrome OS is a Web browser that incorporates a media player and a file browser. 2- Techopedia explains Chrome Operating System (Chrome OS) Chrome OS should not be confused with Chromium OS, an open source OS and the parent project of Chrome OS. Unlike Chromium OS, users can't download and install the Chrome OS because of built-in security features. Instead, Chrome OS is available as a preinstalled OS on Google Chromebooks, which were introduced by Google in conjunction with its manufacturing partners. Users of netbooks, laptops and mini laptops are the biggest fans of Chrome OS. The primary advantages of this operating system include its lightning-fast Web browsing and loading speed, which Google claims is only eight seconds. It also incorporates anti-virus scanning and the ability to detect potentially harmful websites. Google OS’s features also include automatic updates and sandboxing that isolates malware from the system's memory. Chrome OS runs numerous Web-based applications, but it does not run conventional PC software. Chrome OS developers are in the process of developing a free service called Chromoting, which will permit the Chrome OS users to remotely access their current desktops and Macs. 4- Chrome OS will include proprietary technologies such as flash player, designed for Google laptops not every hardware is compatible. That means is proprietary. Not libre!

Google Chrome Terms of Service These Terms of Service apply to the executable code version of Google Chrome. Source code for Google Chrome is available free of charge under open source software license agreements at http://code.google.com/chromium/terms.html. 1. Your relationship with Google 1.1 Your use of Google’s products, software, services and web sites (referred to collectively as the “Services” in this document and excluding any services provided to you by Google under a separate written agreement) is subject to the terms of a legal agreement between you and Google. “Google” means Google Inc., whose principal place of business is at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, United States. This document explains how the agreement is made up, and sets out some of the terms of that agreement. 1.2 Unless otherwise agreed in writing with Google, your agreement with Google will always include, at a minimum, the terms and conditions set out in this document. These are referred to below as the “Universal Terms”. Open source software licenses for Google Chrome source code constitute separate written agreements. To the limited extent that the open source software licenses expressly supersede these Universal Terms, the open source licenses govern your agreement with Google for the use of Google Chrome or specific included components of Google Chrome. 1.3 Your agreement with Google will also include the terms set forth below in the Google Chrome Additional Terms of Service and terms of any Legal Notices applicable to the Services, in addition to the Universal Terms. All of these are referred to below as the “Additional Terms”. Where Additional Terms apply to a Service, these will be accessible for you to read either within, or through your use of, that Service. 1.4 The Universal Terms, together with the Additional Terms, form a legally binding agreement between you and Google in relation to your use of the Services. It is important that you take the time to read them carefully. Collectively, this legal agreement is referred to below as the “Terms”. 1.5 If there is any contradiction between what the Additional Terms say and what the Universal Terms say, then the Additional Terms shall take precedence in relation to that Service. 2. Accepting the Terms 2.1 In order to use the Services, you must first agree to the Terms. You may not use the Services if you do not accept the Terms. 2.2 You can accept the Terms by: (A) clicking to accept or agree to the Terms, where this option is made available to you by Google in the user interface for any Service; or (B) by actually using the Services. In this case, you understand and agree that Google will treat your use of the Services as acceptance of the Terms from that point onwards. 3. Language of the Terms 3.1 Where Google has provided you with a translation of the English language version of the Terms, then you agree that the translation is provided for your convenience only and that the English language versions of the Terms will govern your relationship with Google. 3.2 If there is any contradiction between what the English language version of the Terms says and what a translation says, then the English language version shall take precedence. 4. You may stop using the Services at any time. You do not need to specifically inform Google when you stop using the Services. 4.4 You acknowledge and agree that if Google disables access to your account, you may be prevented from accessing the Services, your account details or any files or other content which is contained in your account. 5. Use of the Services by you 5.1 You agree to use the Services only for purposes that are permitted by (a) the Terms and (b) any applicable law, regulation or generally accepted practices or guidelines in the relevant jurisdictions (including any laws regarding the export of data or software to and from the United States or other relevant countries). 5.2 You agree that you will not engage in any
Re: [Trisquel-users] ChromiumOS
What exactly is non-free about ChromiumOS? I presume the kernel is, but I can't find anything else. Chromium OS has a major issue other than having a non-free kernel--it steers users to use SaaSS and non-free JavaScript for as many primary computing tasks as possible. SaaSS needs to be rejected because it puts computing tasks entirely in the hands of the provider rather than the user and provides control that can be revoked at any time, along with privacy issues. There's an article by RMS on GNU.org that's an interesting read, if you haven't seen it already: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/who-does-that-server-really-serve.html Andrew
