I stuck with Colbert through the Trump administration since his outrage
resonated with me. Even then, though, there'd be some jokes where the
writing would poke through, and it wasn't impressive.

Once Biden came into office, the monologues became more about the writing
than outrage, and they didn't work for me. So I watch Kimmel now. And if he
goes to filler segments with people on Hollywood Blvd., or I'm not
interested in any of the interviews, there are always Perry Mason reruns on
MeTV.

After Midnight drives home why talk shows evolved the way they did. It's
hard to be funny for four or five solid hours a week; you're much better
off taking the top 25% of your comedy and filling the rest of the time with
interviews.

I think the advertising industry gets credit for that, not the NFL. As
someone once said about the Super Bowl, "It's like we have a deal with the
advertisers. They'll try to make entertaining commercials, and we'll
watch." (And, yes, some of those commercials succeed more than others.) As
long as they're spending $7 million for 30 seconds, they can afford to
throw a few extra bucks at the production, and even the promotion: I'm
already starting to see commercials previewing Super Bowl commercials.

How much have ratings for Chiefs games gone up this year? (I'm asking
because I don't know the answer.)

My guess is that most of the people who want to see Taylor and her
boyfriend have been watching for a while. Some will find they like the game
and continue to watch; others won't.

And the Super Bowl audience gets to Kevin's point about streaming. The NFL
is one of the last big ratings generators for broadcast television, and if
it becomes pay-per-view, a lot of casual fans will decide that they'd
rather pay for something else. The Super Bowl is particularly strong, and
that's the one show where viewers, including those who couldn't care less
about football, will actually make a point of watching the commercials. So
it's going to be a while before the Super Bowl isn't available free.

Sony says, “We are truly grateful for all of Mayim’s contributions to

That would seem to leave the possibility of Celebrity Jeopardy!, or some
other kind of network special. Of course, that assumes that Mayim hasn't
closed the door.

even the network PR department, to say "Those were just some disgruntled
employees; most people who work on the Tonight Show are gruntled."

1. I had no problem when I originally brought the article up with one of
those Twitter links, and just copied the URL from that tab. If I thought
there would be an issue, I'd have said something. My apologies for the link
not acting the way I expected it to.

2. Not too surprisingly, the effectiveness of paywalls varies. In many
cases, clicking on Reader View in Firefox is sufficient. (Sometimes
reloading is required.) And there are plenty of publications where there's
no simple way to get around the paywall.

I wouldn't post anything here that I couldn't read easily, or that I
thought people would have a problem with.

And, despite (or even because of) its length, I thought this was a terrific
look at the state of CNN.

I think you're right. A lot of these bits are probably popular on YouTube,

My guess, FWIW:

Everybody in the league hierarchy assumed that the game would resume, like
it always does after an injury, and the five minute warmup after a delay is
standard. So that's what the officiating center told John Parry, and when
Joe Buck reported it, nobody thought it was erroneous. It wasn't until the
players and coaches made clear that they didn't want to continue, and the
Players Association told that to the commissioner, that the possibility of
postponement or cancellation became a real option.

Right now, the broadcast networks get streaming rights to their games, so
that Paramount+ has the games that local CBS affiliates are showing (to be
clear, only for the game that the affiliate in each market is showing), and
there's presumably a similar deal for Fox; I'm not finding a definitive
streamer. In the modern era, it's easy to forget just how valuable the
broadcast networks are to the NFL, but they're the folks who produce and
show Jaguars-Texans games that are of minimal interest to anyone outside
Jacksonville and Houston.

So I'd imagine that the current licensees guard their in-market rights
pretty jealously, and the league is in no hurry to alienate them, even if
it ultimately means that the Sunday Ticket rights are less valuable.

The nature of this show is very different than the nightly hour. The guests
seem to be people who Dave wants to talk to, rather than a parade of folks
with projects to plug. And Dave spends a lot of time with these guests, so
the final product is certainly going to be edited for length.

As far as the Kanye show goes, I watched it a couple years ago when it
first came out, and very little of it stuck. If I try, I can remember that
there was some goofy stuff that Ye said, but nothing that struck me as
newsworthy. I don't think this show is aiming for newsworthy, and the fact
that all of this hasn't come out until years later is an indication of that.

You made me look. There are 15 TNF games. Tennessee is in two, while the
Lions, Vikings and Giants miss out. However, those three teams (as well as
Dallas, Buffalo and New England) play on Thanksgiving. (Thanksgiving night
is on NBC, not Amazon.)

Essentially, since the short week is such a big deal, the league spreads it
around as evenly as possible. No amount of lobbying by Al Michaels, or
anyone else, is going to get good teams into more Thursday games. The idea
of giving teams byes the week before their Thursday games has been floating
around, and it would likely make for better football, but the NFL doesn't
seem to be in any hurry to do that.

Yeah, the questions are dumbed down, but I haven't had the impression that
any of the celebrity contestants we've seen so far couldn't handle them.

I'll leave it to those of you who've been there to tell me how much
producers discourage regular contestants from making comments, but the show
seems fine with celebrities doing so. Maybe they're pandering to Constance
Wu fans rather than Jeopardy! fans.

And, of course, past celebrity games have been one-and-done affairs. The
tournament format probably puts additional pressure on the participants.

If the Academy chooses to define "the Bay Area" as San Francisco, Oakland,

Does anybody watch the Tournament of Champions to see how much players are
going to bet in Final Jeopardy? (As I think of it, the wagers in the first
game of a two-game final are the ones that I'm least likely to figure out

I understand that there are extenuating circumstances in trying to put
together this particular tournament. But, generally speaking, if you have
three players who you consider the class of the field, that's the
convenient number to put into a tournament (of whatever format) without a
lot of unnecessary preliminaries.

I seriously doubt it. As Adam said, the teams involved are a much bigger
factor; it would take two equally appealing matchups for announcers to make
a difference, and even then, I'm much more likely to flip between games at
commercial breaks than I am to choose one. There may be Ian Eagle fans who
will go out of their way to watch his games, but I'd be shocked if that's
more than a negligible portion of the audience.

I'll also mention that we see so much of the top announcing teams that they
become overexposed. Hearing Buck and Aikman twice a week every week didn't
make me more inclined to watch them.

And I'm pretty sure there's a mechanism where CBS and Fox can protect a
small number of games per season from being flexed to Sunday nights, so

If the presentation doesn't improve, it's not gonna matter.

I've always felt that if I notice the directing during live action, it's a
bad broadcast. Whoever's been directing the NHL games on ABC loves to
switch shots, which makes it hard for a long-time viewer to follow the
puck. We can only hope that improves when playoff coverage starts.

Give Apple time. Unless Apple+ is entirely about selling hardware, they'll
start chasing audiences, too.

I think about how so many cable channels have evolved. They start by
targeting a particular niche, be it science fiction fans, people who want a
weather forecast, women, or viewers looking for a half-hour newscast. Once
the channel is established, it's "How do we keep people for longer than
looking to see if it's going to rain where they are?" and the Weather
Channel ends up showing infotainment about tornadoes, or SciFi becomes SyFy
and adds wrestling. It's like every channel is going to end up showing Law
And Order reruns, because that's where the audience and the advertising
revenue is. For streamers, it's subscription revenue, but the same dynamic
is likely to apply.

Batiste has never struck me as someone whose comedy mind would really add
to the show the way Paul Shaffer did. If the outside projects become big
enough, I can imagine him moving on from the Late Show, in sort of a less
acrimonious version of what Branford Marsalis did.

I don't remember whether Late Night was originally forbidden from having a
sidekick as one of Carson's conditions, but I recall that one reason for
hiring Paul was that he had comedy chops in addition to being a superb
musician.

Hosts often need someone to play off of, whether it's a sidekick like Ed
McMahon or Andy Richter, a bandleader like Paul Shaffer or (post-Andy) Max
Weinberg, Guillermo, or Wally the Cue Card Guy for Seth Meyers. Colbert
seems to use either the audience or himself, and that's not as good.

During the Trump administration, Colbert's righteous indignation was
helpful when we were getting two new unbelievable things every day. Even
then, though, there were parts of the monologue where the writing and humor
were questionable. And now, when things are slightly calmer, I've found
that I prefer Kimmel's monologue. If either of them has a guest I want to
watch, that's fine; if not, there's always Perry Mason.(I'm happy to ignore
whatever it is that Fallon's doing.)

At 12:30, Meyers' pseudo-Update that passes for a monologue works well
enough, and now they've found a way to add digressions to A Closer Look
that are silly enough to work. If there's a guest I want to see, I'll
watch; if not, I can turn it off without the sense I'm missing anything. I
saw a bit of the Late Late Show recently, and they still bring out all the
non-musical guests together and then rotate questions; I hoped that they'd
figured out that if there's no synergy between the guests, they're better
off interviewing one guest at a time. Corden and Fallon still compete at
how much love they can profess for their guests' work.

Someone once suggested that the Super Bowl was the event where the
advertising industry says, "We'll actually put some effort into making
watchable commercials, and in return, you won't switch away from them." A
lot of them still miss, but the effort's there. And, for better or worse,
the ads are a water cooler staple the next day.

That's an apt description of all this.

ESPN's Schefter, like a few other reporters, specializes in breaking NFL
news -- signings, trades, retirements -- and presumably has a nice network
of sources whom he's come to trust. So if one of the people who's served
him well before tells him "Brady's retiring," and another confirms it,
there's no good reason not to run with the story and scoop the competition.

If it then turns out that the principals (Brady and the Buccaneers) aren't
ready to go public, whether it's because no decision has actually been made
or the timing is just inconvenient, they can issue non-denial denials. But
I expect that the original report was based on solid journalism, and if
turns out to be wrong, Schefter (and Darlington) and ESPN will live with it.

We've all heard ex-jocks provide analysis (with and without stats) that's
less insightful than what you or I mumble at the TV while watching a game.
Some ex-players are able to use their experience to explain what happened
on the field, and some non-players are able to enlighten us as well.

If you want to claim that there's way too much time on sports networks
being filled by talking heads with uninteresting opinions, I won't argue.

Not coincidentally, the pool of game shows is pretty shallow, too. Carey
and Harvey were known as stand-ups/actors before they got their current
gigs, so I'd call them stunt casting as well. There are no longer four game
shows debuting on network daytime every year, so there aren't slots for the
new Cullens and Kennedys. I'm not up to speed on GSN, but it sounds like
they're not developing hosts, either.
