Apple could force service users to their devices when they were in front of
the pack with a new service. In that case the user did not have the
hardware. These days Apple is later getting to market and users already own
non-Apple hardware and are just as likely to ignore the service as to buy a
new TV add-on. My TV's remote control has buttons for Amazon and Netflix.
It's only a matter of getting a user ID and password to start watching
them. If Apple wants me to buy a new gizmo to watch their service they are
already noncompetitive.

My prediction before was that Apple is going to announce the streaming TV
service at their late summer presentation. There they will announce it as
IOS and Apple TV only. After a couple of months of new hardware sales,
which will fall off after the back-to-school sales end, Apple will open the
service to all users.

I think Apple would rather spend their resources tying the streaming
service to the home speaker and tablets rather than bother with iTunes.

Apple has been playing catch up for the last few years. Apple music has to
catch up to Spotify and Pandora. The Apple home speaker has to catch up to
Amazon's Echo and whatever Google's speaker is called. The streaming TV
service has to catch up to Netflix and Amazon Prime. They should be
sustainable if they have programs people want to watch enough to sign up.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Apple announces multi-year content deal with Oprah Winfrey

2018-06-25 Thread Adam Bowie
I don't think there's really any certainty how Apple will package it or
what platforms it will be available on. Some possibilities:

- It could be an extended Apple Music proposition - giving subscribers
another reason to choose Apple over Spotify. Recall that Apple Music isn't
just limited to iPhones. There's an Android app as well.

- Apple might want to make it exclusive to their devices - iOS and Apple
TV. Apple does most things to drive hardware sales after all, and Apple TV
has probably lost market share to cheaper, and in many ways, more capable
devices like Fire TV and Chromecast.

- Apple could create a new video package that gives you free access to all
their new TV programming, plus say, two premium movie rentals a month for
$9.99. Utilising what is now the iTunes store would give them a leg up
compared to Netflix.

While Apple is busy commissing $1bn on new programming, that's small change
from their perspective. No doubt there'll be some big announcement
alongside the next iPhone announcement in the autumn, and their experience
with the iTunes store means that technically it'll work. Whether it'll be a
success is something else entirely. I'm unconvinced that Beats 1 radio is
being listened to much at all, and does anyone remember iTunes Ping -
Apple's attempt at a music-based social network? But Apple is able to bet
big and can afford to make mistakes. We'll have to wait and see...

Predicting from previous product/service launches (which means they might
not do it this way): they will announce the subscription service and say it
is available only through Apple TV so they can get some Apple TV sales from
early adopters. After 3 months or 6 months Apple will say that they are
opening it up to Roku, Fire, etc as they hit the limit of people willing to
buy an Apple TV for the service. So I'd wait if they announce Apple TV only
at first.

Generally speaking I like The Verge but that article is ridiculous. It only
makes sense for Apple to wait until the platform is ready to announce it.
The fact they haven't yet announced it shouldn't mean anything for the
reader. And we know what the platforms will eventually be: Apple TV and an
app for phones and tablets. I don't think Apple will ever drop iTunes but
it's 17 years old and is going to be less and less relevant as time goes by.

That's EXACTLY the model. Think of it in terms of something we here are
more familiar with - why did Netflix give David Letterman a monthly show?
We know it has nothing to do with ratings since Netflix has nothing to do
with them anyway. In fact they don't care how many watch each show since
everybody watching is already a subscriber and they are not selling
commercial time. The value of a Letterman show is the association of
Letterman to Netflix which gives incentive to people considering joining or
sustaining their subscriptions. And that's what Apple is paying Oprah for.

right word for radio). All Sirius wanted was the ability to put Oprah on

Re: [TV orNotTV] Apple announces multi-year content deal with Oprah Winfrey

2018-06-17 Thread Adam Bowie
Speaking of reading recommendations, I don't think it's been mentioned
here, but I do recommend Joe Adalian's New York Magazine piece on Netflix:
http://www.vulture.com/2018/06/how-netflix-swallowed-tv-industry.html

It's a good inside read about how the business is run. I'm still a little
unconvinced about their long-term business model which is heavily reliant
on growing global viewers, which in itself means making lots of series in
lots of languages to reach local viewers (House of Cards and Stranger
Things won't cut it on their own in territories like India). So their
spending has to remain high, and they just have to persuade more people to
subscribe to them. That also means expensive marketing, because just seeing
a tile on my Netflix homescreen is not enough on it's own.

Anyway, I'm going way off topic. I'd still love to know what Apple's TV
plans really are. Just because they're doing something doesn't mean it'll
work. Beats 1 anyone?

[TV orNotTV] Apple announces multi-year content deal with Oprah Winfrey

2018-06-15 Thread Steve Timko
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Apple says it has reached a multiyear deal with Oprah
Winfrey to create original programs for its streaming service.
Apple said Friday the programs will be released worldwide as part of a
lineup of original content.
Apple has yet to launch its service, whose major competitors will include
Amazon and Netflix.
Winfrey founded and heads the OWN channel as chair and CEO. She recently
extended her contract with OWN through 2025.
An OWN spokeswoman said Winfrey has an exclusive on-camera deal with OWN
but can appear elsewhere on a limited basis.
Winfrey's content for Apple will be solely for the streaming service, the
representative said.
