Re: [U2] UniOleDB / UniODBC / HS.ADMIN
On the same topic, we are trying to return 5 million rows, but the select fails at about 2 million rows. Is there a limitation on how many rows can be returned through UniOleDB or through the UniRPC service? Uniiverse 10.2.4 AIX Unix 5.3 We have been using UniODBC to run our DTS jobs (to our DataWarehouse) since before I began working here. I have been told by our VAR that our setup is not typical. We are now attempting to change from UniODBC to UniOleDB using SSIS. The problem that I am encountering is the SQL statement will not recognize the visible files in the same manner. We have a file MO-GL-DET and using ODBC, we have to refer to the file as MO_GL_DET in the SQL statement. But with the OleDB connection the file does not exist. I created a new voc (alias) without the hyphens (MOGLDET) and everything works (even without running HS.UPDATE.FILEINFO). I have been unable locate any documentation regarding UniOleDB and file name constraints. Has anybody else discovered similar discrepancies? Vance CONFIDENTIALITY. Re: [U2] UniOLEDB and Windows 2008/SQL 2008
Yeah! Someone else with the same problem! If your SQL install is the 64bit version there are 3rd party bridge software pieces you can buy to bridge from the 64bit environment to the 32bit driver. I have no real suggestions on what works so I won't mention any names. I think all are going to be fairly expensive. Rocket is working on a 64bit driver but has no ETA yet. If you install the 32bit driver and install a 32bit version of SQL they should work even though you are running a 64bit OS. I say should because we have not yet confirmed it does. We should find out this week if we get time to test it. I suggest calling or emailing rocket software and get on their beta program so you get the 64bit driver as soon as they think they got it working. Re: [U2] UniOLEDB Connection Issues
Sorry to bother everyone, it was a 32 vs 64 bit issue. If I run >%windir%\SysWOW64\cscript.exe connect.vbs from the command line it runs fine and gets my recordset with IBM.UniOLEDB.1 as the Provider. I know how to switch between wscript and cscript but if anyone knows how to default to the SysWOW64 version, could you share? I'm just glad I can finally get back to it since at least I can run and schedule it now! Thanks, Andrew -Original Message- From: Andrew E. [U2] UniOLEDB hangs
Hi all, We are trying test connection between PC/server and Unidata that we did not get too much luck for our CAS deployment. I have been used the asp page that provided in UNIOLEDB menu. Sometimes works on my PC but not all the time but not on others, if it is failed, the connection hangs there forever. I use IIS test. I just wonder that does anyone use UNIOLEDB before. The oledb provider testing program shows test successfully every time. RE: [U2] UNiOLEDB [ad+info]
See this posting I recently made to CDP on the topic. Then look down two posts to where I provide more detail about the issues and solution. http://tinyurl.com/av4jj When OLEDB does work, I can't tell you how it works with ADO.NET - I'm curious to hear more about this as well. mv.NET uses a fetch mode so that data is passed from server to client only as needed, effectively providing the data pooling that you ask about. This is different from connection pooling which is very helpful in maximizing use of DBMS licenses - mv.NET supports connection pooling where UO and ODBC/OLEDB do not. mv.NET also fully supports the standard ADO.NET Command functions Select, Insert, Update, and Delete. It can stack multiple commands for any operation. It can use BASIC programs as StoredProcedures to perform Command functions. And it can perform dynamic normalization using extended Dict definitions. But one doesn't need to use the Adapter library to populate ADO.NET DataSets - this can also be done using the BASIC-like syntax of the Core Objects library. For those who want to use ADO.NET to bind data to form controls, mv.NET includes a separate Binding Objects library, which provides a properly formatted DataSource for controls without ADO.NET and without manual coding. When developers are considering the tools they want to use, product support is very important. The support for mv.NET is phenomenal. Responses are quick and some fixes are made and delivered immediately. This is far better than some other products which are fairly static or take months between patches. We were unable to get a fix for ODBC/OLEDB issues from IBM, but we do get fast fixes and enhancements for mv.NET when required. I don't like mv.NET because I sell it. Of all of the products available in our market, I sell it because I like it. In brief response to Glenn Batson: It's my understanding that UO.NET is a managed wrapper around UO, but UO itself is of course unmanaged by the CLR. Errors returned from UO.NET clearly show calls to P/Invoke and UO under the covers. That's not a problem, and mv.NET can use UO as the data conduit as well, but it's important to note that just because there is UO and UO.NET doesn't mean the .NET version is fully managed code. RE: [U2] UNiOLEDB
Stuart Boydell wrote, " I'm wondering what peoples experience of using UniOLEDB is.". Here is our experience. Our environment experience has been on version 6 of UniData on Windows 2003. 1) Our engineer's had a heck of a time getting the right connection string to work. It has been such a long time back that I don't remember what the problems seemed to revolve around. Once it started we moved on. 2) We used it for an ASP.NET application. I'm not a .NET engineer but since it is a COM DLL I'm certain there was COMInterop involved. Since it was COM then yes it ran in unmanaged code. We were able to implement C# code that called interfaced with the DLL and ran as a Windows service, getting its request from a MSMQ queue. We did not use ADO.NET pooling. I would have to query and engineer on why, but my guess is it does not fit. 3) The real issue is it uses the UniData SQL engine, which did not perform to our expectations. Additionally we implemented our own connection pooling by using window services and MSMQ queues, but we were told this is not how it is intended to be used. It is intended more for a client server implementation. Either as a result of our implementation or the UniOLEDB implementation, we seemed to have issues with timeouts that fully could not be explained. The overhead of using VSG to define the SQL Schema and setting up uci.config and ud_database was not appealing. 4) Note we only used it for querying data and not updates. We have a lot of business logic tied up in UniBasic and SB+ therefore we have to use UniObjects (and RedBack in the past) to call subroutines. So you end up having more database connections than you would like. 5) Our impression has always been that having UniData on Unix on the backend will perform better and be more stable. Our problem is the majority of our market will not support Unix deployments whether on principal or practice. We are running this environment in production though and it is workable just too many issues. Therefore we are moving away from it and using UniObjects.NET and UniData 7.1. We are switching all our SQL statements over to UniQuery statements that generate data to XML. So for most of the simply queries with string data have worked within the MS dataset. We are using XSLT to for the others. One reason is to get in an environment IBM supports and that is not a COM implementation. Additionally IBM says that native access is always faster (native being subroutines and uniquery). If you have questions you can contact me directly. Also though I have not had any experience with it you may want to look at MV.net. RE: [U2] UniOleDB - Delphi
Claus, If you have set up your config file correctly (looks ok, did you use the horrible UCI Config editor to make sure it is saved in the right place ?) your connection string should just read: "Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;Data Source=TESTFAMIS;Password={your_password_here}" To test this outside of Delphi, try the following bit of VBScript (open notepad, paste in and save as test.vbs. That extension should be associated with WSCRIPT.EXE ...) Dim dbConn Dim dbCmd Dim dbRS Set dbConn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") dbConn.ConnectionString="Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;Data Source=TESTFAMIS;Password={your_password_here}" dbConn.Open Set dbCmd = CreateObject("ADODB.Command") Set dbCmd.ActiveConnection = dbConn dbCmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM {your_test_table_here}" Set dbRS = dbCmd.Execute dbRS.MoveFirst Msgbox dbRS.Fields(1) Not the best VBScript in the world but it should fall over quickly if there are errors Brian --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
[U2] UniOleDB - Delphi
Hi, I'm trying to make a connection from Delphi with UniOleDB to our UniVerse database, but i am stucked with not being able to connect.. Here is what i have done : 1) Via HS.ADMIN as root made the account visible to UniOleDB, also ran HS.SCRUB on a few files so i had something to work with, no problems 2) UniDK kit was already installed, so i edited the uci.config file so now it looks like this : [ODBC DATA SOURCES] DBMSTYPE = UNIVERSE account = /data1/FAMIS host = 10.9.200.20 network = TCP/IP service = uvserver username = CD I have removed the section with UniData as we only run UniVerse the above section 'TESTFAMIS' is build by following the 'Using UniOLEDB' manual 3. Next i made a DELPHI6 project with an empty form and dropped an ADO connection component using the connection string builder i made this conn. string : Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=CD; Data Source=TESTFAMIS;Location=FAMIS;Mode=ReadWrite No matter what i have tried i get the same error string in return when trying to connect : Died UCI::SQLConnect() with SQLSTATE IM976, Native error:0 [IBM][SQL CLient]UCI connections to non UniVerse databases is not allowed.. I guess there is a bond between the uci.config file and the connection string, but i havent figured it out yet. RE: [U2] unioledb connection from SQL2000
First off. Thanks for the response. Next. We figured it out. We used an updated driver from our version 6.03??? Unidata disk instead of the 5.2??? Version that was on the old server. I think the numbers of the actual driver are not that different. But to make a long post shorter I'll just say the answer to the question is formatting. The date needs to be "2005-06-27" not "06-27-05" Why? I don't know. And do I care? Not all that much now that it works. So the secret word of the day is International date format. So It's 3 words. So sue me. I'll return to lurking again. Thanks. [U2] UniOLEDB version issue?
Hello everyone, We are running an old version of Universe. We have an issue with an oledb driver on our windows 2000 IIS web server. We use this same driver on our test nt4 IIS server without any problem, but when we use the asp code and driver on the w2k box the call never returns. When we check the event log on the w2k box we see an error: Out of process application '/LM/W3SVC/3/Root' terminated unexpectedly. Sometimes we get an error that says: The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/3/Root'. The error was '8007053d'. Our version of Universe is 9.5.2.1 Our UniOLEDB is 1.0. Has anyone come across this before, or heard of an issue with older versions of UniOLEDB and W2K? If so, can I just get an updated copy of the UniOLEDB driver somewhere? Cisar, Can you test your OLE DB connection using Excel, Access or Crystal Reports? You should not have a problem with the default configuration. It sounds like something else is going on here. If it still doesn't work after building the connection string, inserting user/pw, etc. as required, then there's a problem here that's a little deeper than the specific connection string being used. RE: [U2] UniOleDB Configuration
I use the full path all of the time - so I don't have to worry about creating the entry in the ud_database file. I've found that if you treat *EVERYTHING* as case-sensitive then you have a much better chance. I don't see anything blatantly wrong - the only other problem that I've had is having a ';' in the password. RE: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports
According to the support case I opened it's a known bug, but with no timescales for a fix. Hoping to move to Unidata 6 to see if the problem is resolved. Also rewriting chunks of the code with Raining Data's PDP product which appears to be faster and more importantly concurrent. I realise SQL is not a core feature of Unidata/Universe but it offers a lot of possibilities to those of us who want systems to talk to each other without having to skill up on UCI and C. Oh well. OLE DB is supposed to be 'newer and better' and ODBC. I guess that newer and better means slower. The problem is that ODBC drops off around 170K records, but is very fast, and OLE DB doesn't drop of but is very slow to retrieve. I have a customer that is told by IBM that they must use the partner who has the support contract, to whom money has been paid, but that partner will not provide the support that is needed. IBM won't talk to me about this because I'm not the partner, and my customer is again told to use the support partner. (sounds strangely like circular reasoning) Anyone have any thoughts for how to handle this? RE: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports
Brian, As usual your advice is useful and objective and most welcome. Hopefully the OLEDB documentation will improve over time and I believe IBM could still do some work to make the interface easier to use and to improve its performance. The U2 product set has a lot to offer and has put a roof over my head for a good few years so I am prepared to be optimistic :) Cheers Eric -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian Leach Sent: 14 May 2004 14:20 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports Eric, Think about what OleDB has to do. Then think about the standard multivalue application. Finally think what would happen to OleDB if you designed and implemented say a SQL server database using the same file structures. It would die. Relational databases that return row sets (like OleDB) are predicated on the fact that the database is highly normalized. That does not only mean that the data is 2 dimensional - it means that the tables are reduced to such an extent that each table contains only the minimal number of columns. Lots of tables, few columns. Since OleDB looks at each table, this means that the amount of data retrieved is kept to a minimum. Multivalue databases, on the other hand, frequently contain files with many hundreds of fields per record. This is not a bad thing - in fact it is part of the advantage of multivalue - but it does not fit well with record set technologies like OleDB. So the problem is not realy with OleDB or with the IBM implementation of OleDB : it is with trying to apply OleDB to existing file structures that are just not designed with that style of data presentation in mind. Create a reporting account with the data reformatted, and you will probably get a lot further. As for open standards, watch out for web services. These are the new open standard for access: and this is where multivalue databases like UniVerse can score highly, both at the functional and record set levels: the latter because of the near match between XML and multivalued data (see the TOXML keyword in UniVerse SQL and RetrieVe for example) and functionally because of the strength of the run machine built into the database. So don't give up hope. (though you might still want to buy mvQuery) Oh and by the way OleDB is superior to ODBC. That's the nature of the protocol: cleaner, leaner, less to heavy. But the documentation sucks. Brian > >I have seen a couple of posts previously on the list >where people >suggest that UniOleDB is superior to ODBC. Make sure your connection string is using the correct case for the Data Source as it has to match the uci.config exactly. Also make sure that the location is a proper account or full path. Here is a file I have on my desktop called myconnection.udl that will test the connection: [oledb] ; Everything after this line is an OLE DB initstring Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Password=yourpassword;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=youruser;Data Source=vaquer;Location=d:\unidata\demo If you double click on it you will get a MS Data Link Properties dialog that you can use to test the connection. Of course you also would have had to install all of the UniOleDb files when you installed the development kit. I just don't remember off hand if it is a separate option. hth -- Colin Alfke Calgary, Alberta Canada "Just because something isn't broken doesn't mean that you can't fix it" Stu Pickles >-Original Message- >From: Cesar Riba [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Friday, May 14, 2004 8:08 AM >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: [U2] UniOleDB Configuration > > >Hello, > > My conexion with ODBC are working, but the conexion >with UniOLEDB don't can >working, when I conect from Visual Basic I recived this error: > > Died in UCI::SQLConnect() with SQLSTATE IM976, >Native error:0 >[Informix][SQL Client]UCI connections to non Universe databases is not >allowed. > > My uci.config file in my computer is, and the version >of Universe is >[9.6.1.3]: > > > [ODBC DATA SOURCES] > > > DBMSTYPE = UNIDATA > network = TCP/IP > service = udserver > host = localhost > > > DBMSTYPE = UNIVERSE > HOST = 10.0.0.3 > MAXFETCHBUFF = 2 > MAXFETCHCOLS = 800 > NETWORK = TCP/IP > SERVICE = uvserver > > > > Can anybody help me. > >Tanks. > >Cisar Riba >Spain. --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.u2ug.org/listinfo/u2-users

Brian I have seen a couple of posts previously on the list where people suggest that UniOleDB is superior to ODBC. From what I am hearing it would seem that this is not the case and furthermore both the implementation of ODBC and OLEDB under UniVerse are poorly implemented features with functionality issues which undermine the feasibility of using either solution in a large site (note I refer to large sites specifically as I am sure the solutions would serve the needs of SMEs adequately) I can understand no improvements being made to ODBC connectivity as this is clearly not the way forward for Microsoft but if IBM do not improve OleDB functionality, it is one more concession to the benefit of competing platforms and solutions. Am I worrying unnecessarily or should I abandon all hope of ever achieving open database connectivity with UniVerse without the use of third party tools such as MVQuery? Re: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports
I'd sure like to see some documentation that would help address performance when selecting large amounts of data. Frankly, you are unlikely to see great performance from UniOleDB when reporting with most applications. As a minimum, I would suggest that you need to look at your data structures and possibly look at creating reporting accounts: UniOleDB does a good job but it is an uphill struggle when it has to handle 'regular' mv files containing multiple associations, lots of fields per record, lack of indexing etc. If you need OleDB reporting, you should think about things from the SQL point of view, and look at reducing your tables to the bare minimum content just as you would when designing a normalized system. After all, that is what OleDB is presenting. Also ensure you set up separate dictionaries to access the data and use the HS.ADMIN facility to build your file information cache (used though not required by OleDB) and use the HS_FILE_ACCESS to strip out any files you do not require. You may get somewhere using the SQL CALL facility, as documented in the UCI guide. This allows you to call a BASIC subroutine and run an SQLExecDirect with a native SQL command: the results can be assigned to @HSTMT and returned to OleDB as a record set. I haven't tried performance testing with this in mind, but certainly under ODBC the best way to get any sort of performance was to ship statements out to the native SQL using the NATIVE statement (not supported on OleDB). Yes, any documentation on OleDB would help also. It is extremely poor, and what little is in existence is scattered across the manual sets. I've already raised this through U2UG as some of our clients are suffering from this. Of course, you could just ditch Crystal Reports and buy mvQuery instead. RE: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports
The only things I can suggest are to select on indexed fields. Try to put your static selections into the view rather then in the crystal report selection. The example would be if you only want active customers then you would have the view select them rather then do this in the crystal report selection. The 2nd thing is to use the setting in Crystal to have the server do as much work as possible on the selection. Under file, options, database tab. Select use indexes or server for speed, perform grouping on server. I have perform query asynchronously un-checked but I don't remember why. Most of the reports I've done, hide the detail line and just show the top level break line with totals. I allow drill down to each of the levels and this tends to speed up the report because it will only return what is needed to the screen. The server does all the selecting, sorting, grouping and totals and then only sends the break totals to the report. When the drill down is done then it pulls only the records for the subset. If I'm wrong about this then please feel free to correct me. I'm going mostly on what I think is happening in the background. Not based on any tracing of activity on the backend. Also if anyone can explain the advantage or disadvantage of what the asynchronous option is I would like to know if I should check this or leave it unchecked. Re: [U2] UniOleDB With Crystal Reports
Eric, The first thing you need to do is to add your specific OLE connection using the UCI Config Editor. The minimum requirements are: DBMSTYPEUNIVERSE NETWORKTCP/IP SERVICEservice name (uvserver) HOST ip address used. Note that for the host, there are certain configurations that will not work with 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' - as such, it is best to specify the specific host, such as 'uvserver.foo.com' or '172.55.122.3' Next, in Crystal Reports, you need to expand the 'More Data Sources' from the Data Explorer dialog box, then expand the 'Active Data', then expand the 'Active Data (ADO)'. If nothing is set up, you are then prompted to select a data source. The default is 'ODBC (ADO)' - change this by clicking on the radio button for 'ADO and OLE DB'. The connection string box is then no longer grayed out. Click on the 'Build' button to have the specific string built for you. Under the 'Provider' tab, select the 'UniOLEDB Provider' and click 'Next' For the 'Data Source', enter the name of the OLE connection you saved in the UCI Config Editor. Specify a user name and password, and click on the 'Test Connection' button. The test should come back ok. You can then use this to access the data. On the downside, some systems have a performance issue with OLE DB where ODBC works faster, but ODBC has an upper limit of around 160K-170K records on some systems.
