[Bug 60672] Mounting Bug (Ubuntu 6.10 Test 2)

2006-09-16 Thread juanqui
Public bug reported:

Short:
When installing Ubuntu 6.10 from the LiveC I told the installer to mount my
60gb windows partition in /media/windows. After reboot my new Ubuntu system
would show two mounts on the desktop: Windows and Windows(2).

More Details:
I thought that this problem might have been fixed so the first thing I did was
fully update my system. After installing about 350 updates I restarted the PC.
I still had the same problem. I decided to unmount it and remount it, but it
still did the same thing. I then proceeded to check the /etc/fstab config
file and there is only one entry for the partition.

If there is any other information that I could provide that would help
fix the problem please let me know.

[Bug 55172] Re: gksu dies on first run

2006-09-16 Thread Michael R. Head
Hm... was this meant to have been fixed in the version published
2006-08-11 16:03:16 EDT 1.9.3-1ubuntu2? If so, I don't think it's been
solved yet. I've been seeing weird problems with update-manager which I
believe are attributable to this bug. After I log in and run update-
manager the first time, when I click the Check button, the update-
manager desensitizes, and gksu attempts to launch, but its window never
appears. I must kill gksu from the GNOME System Monitor for things to
start working right. After that, everything's peachy.

Hi,

I just installed Knot3 this morning, and the problem is still there.

I followed thge instructions in the link you gave me, but there is a problem:
when I try to apply the patch, it doesn't work. It says:

$ patch -Np1 -i  ffmpeg-0.4.9-p20051216.diff

patch: Try `patch --help' for more information.

Can you help me ? Can you reproduce this problem ? to avoid any problems
with typos, I made sure to copy/paste the instructions/commands they
give, rather than trying to type them by hand. Still, the patch fails to
apply :-(

I tried another desktop recorder: byzanz. It worked very well so I

Just a note about the file though... it is not recorded as a video,

GIF files sadly (I file a bug about that...), but I tried with Firefox

[Bug 51542] Re: network printer auto-discovery

2006-09-16 Thread Ante Karamatić
Sharing printers on 6.06 version is done like this:
sudo /usr/share/cups/enable_sharing 1

Enabling your clients to see shared printers is done like this:
sudo /usr/share/cups/enable_browsing 1

It's true, KDE doesn't have GUI for doing this. But this is cause
printing.kde.org stoped developing 4 years ago. Hopefully, GUI will be
created at some point in the future.

As you can see, you don't need any other password but your own. Desipte
Kurt's blog, none functionality was taken from CUPS. If you want to use
web interface, you should read README.Debian or Kurt's blog, in which he
clearly states that one should add cupsys user to shadow group.

[Bug 51542] network printer auto-discovery

2006-09-16 Thread karlrhs
Public bug reported:

this is similar to bug 313173 that was said to be resolved. It is not
resolved attempt to set up a networked printer between 2 Dapper machines
and no matter what you do it will not go. It will ask over and over for
a password but no one seems to know what this is.

If you want kubuntu to help small business this can not happen.

I found an article by a kde developer for cups that says some
functionality was taken out of Dapper that would solve this problem. I
fixed it on my own machine so I know a fix exists. Read his article
please.

http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/2138

There was no reason to put us through this listen to the developers.
This is the microsoft problem they do not listen to the developers.

Without log files I cannot do much with this bug, although error -7

speed (if applicable) and cleaning the CD drive lens with the sort of
cleaning kit you can get at electronics shops; then perform a CD
integrity check before starting the install again.

[Bug 60679] network-manager does not detect ipw2200

2006-09-16 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

lsmod | grep ipw:

ipw2200 114852 0
ieee80211 34952 1 ipw2200

sudo /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon:

NetworkManager: information starting...
NetworkManager: information eth1: Device is fully-supported using driver
'8139too'.
NetworkManager: information nm_device_init(): waiting for device's worker
thread to start
NetworkManager: information nm_device_init(): device's worker thread
started, continuing.
NetworkManager: information Now managing wired Ethernet (802.3) device
'eth1'.
NetworkManager: information Deactivating device eth1.

There's nothing about eth0 which is my wireless. The wireless works fine
though, manually, with good old command line 'iwconfig'. It just doesn't
show up in nm-applet. I'm pretty clueless as of what other information
to give. So pray tell.

[Bug 52299] Re: Xubuntu 6.06 installer crash

2006-09-16 Thread Colin Watson
Without complete log files, I can't do much with this bug. apmarkey, if
you can reproduce this bug with Xubuntu 6.06.1, please reopen this bug
and attach /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and
/var/log/partman. Anyone else, please file a new bug.

I note that there's a certain amount of this kind of thing in your
syslog:

Jul 8 04:31:23 ubuntu kernel: [4295050.812000] hdc: command error: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Jul 8 04:31:23 ubuntu kernel: [4295050.812000] hdc: command error: error=0x51 {
 IllegalLengthIndication LastFailedSense=0x05 }
Jul 8 04:31:23 ubuntu kernel: [4295050.812000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jul 8 04:31:23 ubuntu kernel: [4295050.812000] end_request: I/O error, dev hdc,
 sector 1329184
Jul 8 04:31:23 ubuntu kernel: [4295050.812000] Buffer I/O error on device hdc,
logical block 332296

If /dev/hdc is your hard disk, then it seems to be failing. If it's your
CD drive (which is more likely on average), then you're experiencing CD
read errors, which can't be helping matters. I suggest burning the CD at
a lower speed (if applicable) and cleaning the CD drive lens with the
sort of cleaning kit you can get at electronics shops; then perform a CD
integrity check before starting the install again.

[Bug 60680] Ejecting an audio disk had message writing to disk

2006-09-16 Thread Paul O'Malley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Boot machine with an audio disk in CD drive.
Log into account.
Choose to remove disk using right click and eject.
On screen message reported that the system was Writing data to storage disk.
However the CD is a WORM device, so this is untrue.
It might be considered confusing.
This is the same message as when someone ejects a USB key,

Perhaps the program should judge the media and say if it is audio that
it is ejecting, and the existing message should be left in place for USB
devices, and other such external media.

** Description changed:

- this is similar to bug 313173 that was said to be resolved. It is not
- resolved attempt to set up a networked printer between 2 Dapper machines
- and no matter what you do it will not go. It will ask over and over for
- a password but no one seems to know what this is.
-
- If you want kubuntu to help small business this can not happen.
-
- I found an article by a kde developer for cups that says some
- functionality was taken out of Dapper that would solve this problem. I
- fixed it on my own machine so I know a fix exists. Read his article
- please.
-
- http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/2138
-
- There was no reason to put us through this listen to the developers.
- This is the microsoft problem they do not listen to the developers.
-
- http://dot.kde.org/1149158725/1149176458/
-
- I would love to hear back on this issue.
+ kde network printer auto discovery is not as discoverable as it is in

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-powerpc

The Linux kernel upgrades for dapper quietly fail because they update
the initrd.img and vmlinux symlinks in /, but not the ones in /boot

  old (vulnerable) kernel.

This copy of dapper was a fresh install just after dapper came out, and
/etc/yaboot.conf hasn't been altered by hand - it always referred to
/boot/initrd.img and /boot/vmlinux (and .old symlinks, which don't

[Bug 60681] konversation does not show what is actually sent

2006-09-16 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konversation

If Konversation is configured to use iso-8859-1 character set, and if I
enter a message with some characters outside this character set, the
following seems to happen:

- Konversation silently translates the non-iso-8859-1 characters to ?
when it sends the message to the server.

- However, the chat window, the irc log, etc. show the original message.

Thus, one never knows what the other people actually see, especially if
some text is copy-pasted from somewhere else, and it contains characters
that look similar to normal iso-8859-1 characters.

I would expect one of the following:

1) Konversation does the translation and shows the result in the chat
window.

2) Konversation gives a warning, highlights the problems, and lets me
edit the message.

(Package konversation, version 0.19-0ubuntu4.)

[Bug 60683] konversation silently discards some messages (irc channels with non-ascii characters)

2006-09-16 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

- Set the character encoding in Konversation to utf-8.

- Join an IRC channel with a non-ASCII character in its name, say,
#testä (the channel name is in utf-8).

- Using another IRC client, send a message which is not a valid utf-8
message (say, something with non-ASCII characters encoded latin-1) to
#testä (naturally the channel name has to be in utf-8).

- Konversation silently discards the message.

I would expect one of the following:

1) Konversation shows the message with the broken characters replaced by
some invalid character marker.

2) Konversation guesses the correct encoding of the message and shows it
correctly. (It seems that this is what happens in the case of channels
with only ASCII characters in their names.)

3) Konversation show at least something; a warning in the status window
if nothing else.

(Package konversation, version 0.19-0ubuntu4.)

[Bug 60685] radeonfb fails to probe EDID on a PowerBook G4 (TiBook)

2006-09-16 Thread Heikki Lindholm
Public bug reported:

I have a 667 MHz PowerBook3,4, which has a Radeon Mobility M7 LW
[Radeon Mobility 7500]. The default boot-up on Dapper, where radeonfb
is used, fails very often and it _seems_ even more so after the
2.6.15-26.47 (after more than 20 boots I finally got a working console.)
The failure manifests itself as a non-synced display, eg. the display
shows a grey bar or random flickering trash.

Now, I compared the dmesg output of a failed boot attempt (ssh'ing into the
machine) and a successful boot attempt, and there is a difference:
Successfull boot:
[ 28.799644] radeonfb: Monitor 1 type LCD found
[ 28.799652] radeonfb: EDID probed
[ 28.799657] radeonfb: Monitor 2 type no found
[ 28.799674] radeonfb: Using Firmware dividers 0x0002008e from PPLL 0
[ 28.958642] radeonfb: Dynamic Clock Power Management enabled
Failed boot:
[ 27.818747] radeonfb: Monitor 1 type LCD found
[ 27.818756] radeonfb: Monitor 2 type no found
[ 27.818767] radeonfb: Using Firmware dividers 0x0002008e from PPLL 0
[ 27.818776] radeonfb: Assuming panel size 8x1
[ 27.977745] radeonfb: Dynamic Clock Power Management enabled
Notice that the failed boot finds the LCD monitor, but does not, for whatever
reason, probe the EDID and goes on to assume a grand 8x1 panel!

Additionally, any similar issue has NEVER happened when booting to Mac
OS X and this problem has been around from at least 2.6.9 kernel, which
I remember using with Debian before switching to Dapper. Usually booting
between OS X and Linux corrects the problem, whereas successive attempts
to boot Linux just fail in a row.

[Bug 59852] Re: x60 sound doesn't work in ubuntu

After upgrading bios and turning on modem, sound now works (not sure if
upgrading the bios helped).

My thinkpad came shipped with the modem turned off. I will never ever
use the modem.

I still think its a bug that ubuntu can't startup sound if the modem is
turned off (snd-hda-intel is loaded, it just for some odd reason fails
to work). As far as I remember turning on the modem also drains the
power faster when running on battery...

[Bug 60686] knot3 oops when booting on powerpc64

2006-09-16 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

I just downloaded knot3 to test on my PowerMac G5, but the kernel oopses
right after I select live-nosplash-powerpc64. After a long period of
time, the CD-ROM spins up and then an additional few lines of output are
printed, then nothing.

I tried selecting live-powerpc64 first, but my monitor couldn't handle
the bootsplash (19 LCD, ViewSonic VP191b) and I couldn't see anything.
After a long while, I gave up and re-tried with nosplash. I also tried
the check option, but it seems to use bootsplash as well (and thus I

[Bug 60105] Re: paste not functional (half)

2006-09-16 Thread DjMix
Hi. I've read the response of the developer. I think that the problem is
not that. He don't wont the user able to randomly edit the text area,
and this is ok, but I can paste anything via edit-paste, and for
anything I mean really anything, even phrases. I can use edit- paste or
ctrl-v, or middle button. But not the quicker (and more immediate)
method, right-button-paste. To me, he have to disable all of this, if
he want to enforce control over user input.

Paste something in it is a usefull thing. And it is possible. But not in
the more natural way. Is it possible to catch paste from the contextual
menu and append it like the over ways?
