[Bug 453739] [NEW] FFe: Sync kerberos-configs 2.2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)
Public bug reported: Please sync kerberos-configs 2.2 (main) from Debian unstable (main) Explanation of FeatureFreeze exception: kerberos-configs currently includes the krb4-config package in Ubuntu. Since Karmic contains krb5 version 1.7, which doesn't come with krb4, it doesn't make sense to include this package. Version 2.1 of kerberos-configs in Debian removed the krb4-config package (and any krb4 support in general). [Bug 420960] Re: Karmic Alpha 4 playback stops when playing media stored on samba share
A change in the last week seems to have resurrected this bug - I'm running up to date Kubuntu 9.10 i386 Beta Watching media stored on a Kubuntu i386 9.04 Samba share. It seems to stop for me after playing for about 5 minutes and Kaffeine loses its place in the media, so continuing playback requires manually dragging the slider to the approximate place in the file. [Bug 375569] Re: gnome-screensaver failure - can't access samba password database - not running as root
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve Ubuntu. The thing is, this isn't really a bug at all. gnome-screensaver is working exactly as it's supposed to, as is pam_smbpass; it just logs (at severity LOG_DEBUG) a notice that the smbpasswd database is not being updated, because the process isn't running as root. We don't want to stop logging that information, because there are cases when other apps might call pam_smbpasswd with the wrong permissions, and we want it to be easy to figure out that this is what's going on. We don't want to have gnome-screensaver skip calling pam_smbpass (although if you don't need Windows filesharing support, you can uninstall the libpam-smbpass package from your own system), because this would require complex special-casing of this one program in the configuration. And we certainly don't want pam_smbpass running as root when you're authenticating to the screensaver. So I don't see any solution to make this log message disappear that wouldn't be worse than what we currently have. I'm therefore closing this bug as 'wontfix'. ** Package changed: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) = samba (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: New = Won't Fix -- gnome-screensaver failure - can't access samba password database - not running as root https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/375569 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 445154] Re: package backuppc 3.1.0-4ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Ok, so I spent a little time hacking on this (I tried to downgrade, added some log statements to BackupPC so I could see what was really going on) and realize what happened in my case. 1) mount failed for some reason. Probably before the update occurred. 2) backuppc auto-created /var/lib/backuppc. Possibly during the update. 3) backuppc failed to create a test hard link in the resulting directory on startup. Resolved by: 1) modifying /etc/backuppc/config.pl to have TopDir point to my drive (probably not absolutely necessary, but it will be helpful to me for future ref to diagnose this). 2) re-creating the softlink between /var/lib/backuppc and the drive. Necessary in my situation because it will still try to create a log directory and fail (and maybe this is an issue of me configuring this wrong, but that's probably off topic). After fixing my config as above, the problem went away. Yay. :) I guess my issue was in fact unrelated to Ion's problem, and I hope I didn't distract. Wish I could delete the post with all those long log entries. -- package backuppc 3.1.0-4ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445154 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to backuppc in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 454302] [NEW] Missing dependency - apache_process plugin
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: munin The apache_process module has a dependancy on Perl. Specifically, the following dependency should be be added to, in particular, munin-node: libwww-perl Without libwww-perl, the module fails. There is a further dependency on a correctly-configured apache2.conf. Specifically, if apache has not been configured to support /server- status, then the module will also fail. Note that the default for apache is to NOT configure /server-status, so in a default configuration, the apache_process module will always fail, regardless of whether the above libwww-perl dependency has been satisfied. [Bug 378416] Re: Thinkfinger cleanup
I have neither the time nor enough knowledge about its internals to even consider taking over the project. I just want things to work smoothly: Thinkfinger is stable enough that it only takes minimal effort to keep up with minor kernel or X changes that happen over time. But one thing is for sure: Having a basically unmaintainable package is not going to help improve the quality or the security of the system and we don't lose anything by replacing the current mess by something more manageable. It really doesn't make any sense to shove fprint down people's throats before it has reached feature parity with thinkfinger. If fprint developers feel that thinkfinger's solution to the password problem is not acceptable to them, they need to push for improvements in pam. If they can't do that, I consider the project just as dead as thinkfinger. I'm certainly not going to spend my time writing a patch that upstream won't accept and then try getting it into ubuntu, I'd rather fight for thinkfinger to stay until they (fprint) get this basic usability issue sorted out. -- Thinkfinger cleanup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378416 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 450214] Re: Parted server appears to hang when attempting to format a swap partition on powerpc.
I have now discovered that gparted also fails to create/format a swap partition on a mac partition table. In addition, I have managed to reproduce this using an external drive on both powerpc and x86. The only thing thats baffling, is that gparted doesn't appear to use any of libparted's timer functions, which is where parted_server was choaking for the installer. I'll get an strace of gparted to see if there is anything that may help identify the issue. -- Parted server appears to hang when attempting to format a swap partition on powerpc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/450214 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The crash-report dialog says I should do that only if I did not enter passwords, but of course for 802.11x I did enter a password. I had to sign that I keep that password secret. [Bug 448191] Re: No sound after desktop starts when using very long Login Ready sound
Hi Pedro. I just installed Karmic on a virtual machine in an attempt to reproduce this issue as you requested. Unfortunately the situation is much worse in Karmic. It seems the new GDM included in Karmic does not provide a way to customize the login ready sound and, more importantly, provides no way to disable the sound either. Please refer to the following bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-sounds/+bug/437429 However, as a workaround for this test I replaced /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/dialog-question.ogg with a longer sound file (giving it the same name). The result is that the longer dialog- question.ogg sound now stops playback as soon as login is successful. In Jaunty, the sound continues to play. But all sound playback appears to be functional in Karmic after the desktop loads in this test, so that is a good thing. It's not quite what I was hoping for (I had hoped the login ready sound would continue to play while the desktop loads) but I probably would have disabled the sound after a couple days anyway. -- No sound after desktop starts when using very long Login Ready sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/448191 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 441142] Re: ls -la fails to print directory names
Hi, I have found the problem after havind updated Ubuntu. This means that the colors used by ls have changed. Of course, the programmer that has the task to develop ls cannot know what background colors the user is using. By the same token the user cannot foretell what changes will be made to these colors. Moreover, it could be quite unfriendly to ask users to check all colors used by all programs such as ls before choosing a background! Therefore, I think that this bug should not be changed, and instead fixed by making programs such as ls, or even better some libraries used by them, choose colors that are different from the backgroud one. -Angelo -- ls -la fails to print directory names https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/441142 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 445084] Re: click-to-focus window is too sensitive
I have the same problem. I use metacity, but don't think it is related to metacity. It goes like this: I want to copy-paste some text from terminal 1 to terminal 2, using mouse only. (1) I use mouse left button to select some text in terminal 1. (2) Move mouse over the terminal 2, click with left button to set focus to it. (3) Click mouse wheel button to paste the selection into terminal 2. The problem is in step 2. Often I make a tiny move during the click, thus making a new selection in terminal 2. Yes, that was also my understanding of 'incomplete'. And I asked precisely because I was afraid that its status of 'incomplete' would see it being left out by Ubuntu developers. [Bug 453260] Re: Can not connect using WEP ASCII keys
I appreciate the difficulties with 64bit WEP ASCII keys. However, networkmanager itself (as well as Windows systems and MacOS, and Gnome using networkmanager) all permit the user to attempt to connect. WEP ASCII keys are very common, including in public wifi networks. Most users either a) cannot obtain the hex equivalents (e.g. in a public networks), b) do not know why their connections have failed, c) do not have the knowledge or information, or internet access, to find out why. Having no capability to enter and attempt connection using WEP ASCII keys is therefore a major regression in the implementation of networkmanager. I submit that it is preferable to permit a user to attempt connection using the algorithms that were formerly permitted, albeit with a warning message that WEP ASCII usage is deprecated and may not work. Even if it doesn't work with half the connections it is not rational to deny any attempt at connections via this method. In any event, I would suggest that when a user attempts to enter a 64bit WEP key, rand it can't connect, rather than just having their connection refused, a message should display explaining why their connection isn't working, and what they may do to about (get a HEX key, or use WPA for example). This would at least prevent some users worrying what was going wrong with their computer, and attempting all kinds of fixes (aggravated further since they may have no internet connection to research the problem, and if their WEP key and connection used to work fine with Gnome, KDE ,or Windows). -- Can not connect using WEP ASCII keys https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453260 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 359975] Re: evince sometimes yield error Error printing: Too many failed attempts
Didn't want to chime in but few of these comments doesn't really help to solve the bug. It's advised not to rant, blame developers, tell why you do not use this or that, or talk about end-of-the-world situations. The bug seems to have been identified, it should be tested and fixed, I guess helping comments about making this process forward are welcome, others may be not. Yes, this should be fixed fast because it breaks important funcionality. I do not have the resources to fix it, and open source users must not _demand_ fixing from others. Asking pretty please should do well. :-) My two 'cents. [Bug 453748] [NEW] sets wrong brightness value with xrandr
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager My laptop display backlight has 16 brightness values (0-15). If gnome-power-manager is not running and I set it all the way down to 0 (via fn-brightness-down) and watch /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness as I incrementally turn it up to full brightness again, I see the values 0, 1, 2, ... 15 as one would expect. If gnome-power-manager is running, I see the values 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, ..., 14, 15, i.e. jumping two levels up each time I increase the brightness one step. The backlight however really only increases the level by one each time I press fn-brightness-up, so when actual_brightness reaches 15 the actual brightness I see on my display is around half of the full backlight level. This causes the brightness notifications from notify-osd to report bogus values (thinking I already reached maximum when I'm just on half brightness etc.) This behaviour started very recently, probably when the xrandr-backlight KMS capability was enabled, it was working fine before. I'm not sure whether this is actually the fault of xserver-xorg-video-intel or the kernel, but as I see those bogus values only when gnome-power-manager is running I decided to file it against that. I have an Intel GM45 on a Dell Latitude E6400. Attaching the output of gnome-power-manager --verbose when incrementally setting the brightness from zero to full.
