[Bug 1642078] Re: Black screen at startup on Carrizo

2018-03-13 Thread victor gaspar
Hi Christopher,

1) This one was hard... I needed a magnifying glass to get the info:
HP Pavilion Notebook PC
ProdID: V7R89LA#ABM
Model 14-av005Ia

2) Update done using command:
   sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04
xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
Same results, black screen. In fact, after the update, it never starts
correctly again :S

3) I tried with the four options. None worked.

[Bug 1731735] Re: zfs scrub starts on all pools simultaneously

2017-11-12 Thread Gaspar Chilingarov
Yes, I'm using ZFS on laptop to get benefits of snapshotting and zfs
send/receive, apart from that the machine does not do heavy IO :)

Thanks for advice, definitely it is not a intended use scenario.

May some changes in documentation will help to provide better clarity.
Or may be even informational message while creating second pool on a
same disk.

[Bug 1731735] Re: zfs scrub starts on all pools simultaneously

2017-11-12 Thread Gaspar Chilingarov
I'm using it on laptop.

One pool holds OS + home directories and other more-or-less fast
changing stuff.

Another one holds only backups and VM images.

First reason was to try deduplication on VM dataset without affecting
main pool.

Second reason was to have two big partitions to do experiments - so if
necessary one pool can be moved to external HDD, partition can be
formatted and used as Windows or any other way.

Having one single big partition spanning whole disk proved to decrease
flexibility in trying new versions of OS/other OSes and etc.

[Bug 1731735] [NEW] zfs scrub starts on all pools simultaneously

2017-11-12 Thread Gaspar Chilingarov
Public bug reported:

# Environment

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04

Linux 4.10.0-38-generic-tuxonice #42~ppa1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Oct 30 20:21:41
UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

zfsutils-linux 0.6.5.6-0ubuntu18 amd64

# Current behaviour

`/usr/lib/zfs-linux/scrub` starts `zfs scrub` on all pools at the same
time. If pools are located on the same disk - scrub performance degrades
badly.

# Proposed behaviour

* simplest one - start scrub of one pool after another scrub is finished
* advanced - detect pools which are located on the same disk and start scrubs
on them sequentially, if they are on different disks it is fine to run them in
parallel

[Bug 1720699] [NEW] gfortran segfault on continuation at end of program followed by two or more newlines

2017-10-01 Thread Andrew Gaspar
Public bug reported:

If you end a FORTRAN program with the continuation character '&'
followed by two newlines, gfortran SEGFAULTs when attempting to compile
the program.

This issue has a very minimal repro:

file: test.f90
```
end program &
```

The two newlines at the end are significant. The problem does not repro
with 1 or 0 newlines, though it does repro with more newlines. The
problem also repros when any of the lines following the continuation
contain a comment. The problem repros with both LF and CRLF line
endings.

I believe this program should compile without error.

Putting a token anywhere after the continuation, even separated by 2 or
more newlines, results in the expected error messages.

I'm running this on Windows Subsystem for Linux, though it's not likely
that is causing this bug.

The SEGFAULT error encountered:

[Bug 1642078] Re: Black screen at startup on Carrizo

2017-03-11 Thread victor gaspar
Sorry Evren, my only issue is with this 'blank screen' error. HD speed
tested with HDPARM and it looks fine. Also did not notice any problem
with keyboard, or touchpad. WiFi installation was smooth. Current
version of the kernel is 4.4.0-66-generic. Updating did not get things
worse. Nor better in the case of the black screen bug.

I read your posts on bug #1616830, and let's hope AMD and Canonical work
towards a solution together.

Regards,
V.

[Bug 1649342] [NEW] md5sum fails with message "Invalid argument" on 4, 294, 967, 295-byte files in FAT32 - tracked down to Ubuntu incompatible change to kernel's fread and stdio stream

2016-12-12 Thread Jaime Gaspar
Public bug reported:

Bug discovered in the threads at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-
coreutils/2016-12/msg8.html and
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189981 partially quoted
below (with the permission of the persons involved).

=== Message 1 ===

--- Bug ---
In a FAT32 file system, if one runs md5sum on a 4,294,967,294-byte file (one
byte less than the maximum file size) it succeeds, but if one runs md5sum on a
4,294,967,295-byte file (the maximum file size) it fails with error message
"Invalid argument".

--- How to reproduce the bug ---
Create a FAT32 file system in a file "tmp.fs":
   truncate -s 9G tmp.fs
   mkfs.vfat -F 32 tmp.fs
Mount at "/tmp/mounted_tmp/" the file system in file "tmp.fs":
   sudo mkdir /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   sudo mount -o loop,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 tmp.fs /tmp/mounted_tmp/
Create two files in "/tmp/mounted_tmp/", file "file_1" with 4,294,967,294 bytes
and file "file_2" with 4,294,967,295 bytes:
   cd /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   truncate -s 4294967294 file_1
   truncate -s 4294967295 file_2
Run md5sum on the two files "file_1" and "file_2":
   md5sum file_1
   md5sum file_2
The outputs should be respectively (notice that the second output is an error
message):
   541249e3205af07b4a03f891185f64a0 file_1
   md5sum: file_2: Invalid argument
Unmount the file system at "/tmp/mounted_tmp/":
   cd ..
   sudo umount /tmp/mounted_tmp/
   sudo rmdir /tmp/mounted_tmp/
Remove the file "tmp.fs".

--- Notes ---
Tested with md5sum 8.25 running on an updated Ubuntu 16.10 with kernel
4.8.0-30-generic.
The same bug affects sha1sum, sha224sum, sha256sum, sha384sum, and sha512sum,
but not crc32.

=== Message 2 ===

...
> --- How to reproduce the bug ---
...

I can't repro this with any md5sum version on 4.2.5-300.fc23.x86_64
So I'm guessing a kernel regression.
Can you strace -o /tmp/md5sum.strace md5sum file_2,
and look towards the end of the strace file to identify the syscall returning
EINVAL?
In any case I'd direct the issue towards the kernel folks.
...

OK we've read all we can, but to verify md5sum will do:
  fread(buffer + 32767, 1, 1, stream)

Then the stdio stream will issue the underlying read()s
I'm not too sure where there are two reads here,
but they shouldn't be returning EINVAL, but just
returning 0 to indicate EOF.

>read(3, 0x25c12b0, 8192)= -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
>read(3, 0x25c12b0, 8192)= -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

So it's a kernel bug as suspected.

Hm, tested on debian/testing with v4.8 vanilla (+ debian gcc PIE fix).
However, I couldn't reproduce it.

[Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-11-23 Thread Gaspar
#5 STOP WORKING after a sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade.

Bluetooth is working but, who cares when you cannot get a sound out of
your laptop?

Cannot figure out how to downgrade to Raring applet.

So I will reinstall the hole system with Precise (or fedora xfce spin).
The great feature they both have? You can listen to music and see a
film !

[Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-11-23 Thread Gaspar
Thank you very much for your quick response guys, really appreciated.

Of course I reapplied #5, the result was the same I used to have: The
applet starts to work, but you have no sound. The funny thing is that
when you open the sound preferences, the graphic shows you the sound
bars going up and down with the music, you can see your music, but you
cannot hear anything.

This is the output of the automated patch:

 ./status.1208204.sh
status.1208204.sh: Patch/Unpatch status follows
status.1208204.sh: Patched
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 369 nov 23 14:21 indicator-sound.service
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110 nov 23 14:21 indicator-sound.service.ORIGINAL
status.1208204.sh: End

Yes, reinstalling is anoying but I cannot see another solution. On the
good side: I made a full backup on 2013-11-19 to clean install xubuntu
Saucy, so this time, for me, it is not a big deal.

[Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-11-19 Thread Gaspar
Two things:

- Workaround in #5 kind of worked for me: The indicator appeared ok, but
still no sound. I didn't got sound until I installed all optional add-
ons of the pulseaudio package in the Software Center and execute a sudo
alsa force-reload.

- Certainly having no sound at all was a clear stopper for me, and not
seen #5 workaround in the official iso after 3 months is something I
still cannot belive.

[Bug 1229195] Re: Openconnect will not connect under Saucy -- openssl problem?

2013-11-05 Thread Gaspar
Just a word to let you knoy I really love the work you are doing!

After updating from raring to saucy, I was having the same error and now
it works OK with the --no-xmlpost option

This is the verbose version of the error I was getting:

phe@sanlap:~$
phe@sanlap:~$

Now it works OK with the --no-xmlpost option. I prefer the command
line over the graphical interface, so this solution is perfect for me.

Thanks again !

[Bug 1219446] [NEW] Skype video is green on Hashwell

2013-09-01 Thread Gaspar Sinai
Public bug reported:

I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS.

I downloaded skype-ubuntu-precise_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb from the official
site and installed it on my Haswell (i7 4770k) computer wich uses Intel
Graphics. No video card in this system.

Both local and remote skype video on my screen was solid green, the
remote partner could see me without problems.

I tried downgrading to skype-debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64.deb which is known
to be working on my Sandy Bridge ( i7 2630QM) machine. This resulted in
local (preview) video working both remote still being solid green.

I found a workaround that fixed both skype versions:

- Generate an /etc/X11/xorg.conf with Xorg -configure
- Add the folowing to Device section for Intel Graphics
 Option AccelMethod uxa

This wrokaround slows down all accelerated graphics - I wish the default
would work..

[Bug 1008207] Re: No shadow in top panel when disabling desktop icons in Unity

2013-03-04 Thread Miguel Gaspar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 871283 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871283

This has bothered me for some time (since 12.04), because whereas a
nautilus crash is a transient and abnormal condition, choosing to not
having desktop icons is a legitimate choice. I never use the desktop
folder now, because of this; but this means I have to organize my
ducuments differently, while keeping an omnipresent folder that is
useless...

The mechanism for the panel shadow should be independent of nautilus.
This dependency also means that changing the 'desktop' (more precisely,
root window?) background from the normal 'Appearance' thing (?) doesn't
work (without toggling the desktop icons on and off).

[Bug 884128] Re: Window Title still present in indicator panel after closing the window

2013-03-04 Thread Miguel Gaspar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 871283 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871283

From your symptoms, it seems you may have no nautilus root window, i.e.,
either your nautilus crashed or you changed the option for showing desktop
items (perhaps through dconf key - search for desktop-background-show
desktop icons).
I have noticed that, and also access to the dash is very unresponsive in that
case (that is, when no window has focus, since there's no 'background' nautilus
to swtch the focus after minimizing or closing a window). This is a bad
usability issue for people who choose to not have desktop icons.

[Bug 937923] [NEW] Grub2 fails to access external usb disk on systems with SATA

2012-02-21 Thread Miguel Gaspar
Public bug reported:

I have used grub and grub2 on external usb disk drives for some time, with no
trouble.
This allows me to take my whole system from one machine to another, and boot it
(either directly from the usb or by loading grub off the internal disk drive).
On a few more recent machines, I am no longer able to do that: grub2 on my
external drive doesn't start (just presents a blinking cursor when the external
drive is selected in the bios boot menu), and grub2 loaded from the internal
drive, even if it sees the external drive, and lists the partitions on it,
hangs when reading (ls (hd1)/) from it.
The drive is perfectly fine, it boots normaly on other systems, and I can
access its contents normaly if I boot Oneiric from the internal drive or a
livecd.
Both machines that give me problems have interal sata, so I can not install my
external (IDE) drive on them.
I have tried other external enclosures and drives, with the same result.
Still, those machines will boot from usb flash drives with no problem.
Using set debug=all in grub2 console (loaded from the internal drive) I can
get some error messages. I will try to post that output later.

I suspect this is not only grub's fault - will try other bootloaders
when I have managed to do a backup.

This is the output of lspci and lsusb from one of the machines (Asus A52F -
SX270V):

[Bug 937923] Re: Grub2 fails to access external usb disk on systems with SATA

2012-02-21 Thread Miguel Gaspar
After some more tests, I managed to boot my external usb disk by using
super_grub_disk (note: not grub2, but grub-legacy), from UBCD v.511 installed
on a flash drive.
Super_grub2_disk doesn't work, as well as gru4dos.

So, it seems the problem, even if it might be related to bios, can be
worked around.

[Bug 852992] [NEW] Unity user experience is below acceptable with no proper return to Gnome2

2011-09-17 Thread Incze GASPAR
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10 Beta1 x86 with latest updates

User XP is worse than ever:
- Windows stuck on screen, when you click them, they don't activate
- Unity main menu (Ubuntu icon) won't show sometimes, because it's under some
applications (it's in the background somewhere)
- Unity dock can't be set up properly (tweaking, location, theme, etc...)
- A lot of missing system settings from control panel
- Time consuming methods to change the active window.
- Rare system freeze when you just move your mouse over (!!!) an external drive
icon on the desktop

I installed gnome-session-fallback, but it's not the same it used to be, it's
simply worse.

[Bug 445864] Re: Impossible to open a *.iso file

2010-10-17 Thread Huba Gaspar
I've encountered the same problem on 10.10 too.

Running k9copy with strace I've also find the cause of the problem:
opening of an iso image returns EOVERFLOW.
From the manual of open:

EOVERFLOW
pathname refers to a regular file that is too large to be opened.
 The
usual scenario here is that an application compiled on a 32-bit
platform without -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 tried to open a file
whose size
exceeds (231)-1 bits; see also O_LARGEFILE above. This is the
error
specified by POSIX.1-2001; in kernels before 2.6.24, Linux gave
the
  error EFBIG for this case.

From the explanation above it is obvious that only 32-bit version is affected
and this problem can also be fixed on the 32-bit version by adding a compiler
flag.

I've added the following two lines to CMakeLists.txt of the source tree and
rebuilt the deb package:
SET(CMAKE_C_FLAGS -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64)
SET(CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64)

[I've put it after SET(CMAKE_MODULE_PATH ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/cmake)
line in CMakeLists.txt]

I did not test it thoroughly yet but the iso file open problem has disappeared!

These defines can cause problems only if k9copy uses external libraries
which were not compiled with the above settings and they share file
descriptors.

So I suggest this fix to be included in the official version of k9copy
too!

[Bug 550502] Re: Drop all elevated privileges menu doesn't make sense

2010-07-07 Thread Miguel Gaspar
It would be useful if, for instance:
Your child is playing, and an update manager window appears; you don't want him
to install updates, so you need to provide your password for that kind of
operations. But then, you don't want to be prompted for the password every time
when you are doing several administrative tasks, so the system remembers for
some time that you 'got hold' of super-user previleges. It will expire after a
few minutes, I guess. That is indicated by the presence of the key icon in the
status bar.
Now, when you are done with some administrative tasks, and your child resumes
playing Tux, you'll want to discard those privileges, so he won't do anything
wrong by acident. That's what the 'drop elevated privileges' means.

It probably should have a 'What is this?' option in that menu... and
perhaps 'Administrative previleges' would be more familiar to window
users...

One problem is: it appears when one authenticates: 'Provide your
password to allow this or that'. But when one authenticates, he is doing
some task (that is interrupted by that prompt), and doesn't notice the
icon in the status bar. When latter he notices it, it's not easy to
understand where it came from.

[Bug 462404] Re: Adding new start up applications are very hard

2010-07-07 Thread Miguel Gaspar
For the (somewhat common) case where the user has to pick an
application, the file-chooser should provide a link to
/usr/share/applications in the Places side panel. That would also double
as a convenient way to access applications from nautilus windows.

While some may object this kind of duplication, there's also a Desktop
entry in places (although the Desktop is supposedly... in your desktop);
and while most users will never browse the 'Filesystem' (a technical-
sounding designation, not consistent with the '/' or 'root' or other
conventions...), when they do, they will probably be looking for
application launchers (which may not show up in the Application or
System menus).

I don't like saying this, but... in windows, users can right-click and
open up their Start Menu folder, and find where their stuff is (well,
that's just shortcuts). Or browse their 'c:' drive [they are accustomed
to that idiosyncratic designation] and find a folder named Program
Files, right there.

[We have an OS that is heavily, fundamentally based on the filesystem,
but we are breaking that, and that spells trouble...]

[Bug 538839] Re: when do-release-upgrade aborts, no instructions are given for how to complete the upgrade

2010-07-04 Thread Miguel Gaspar
I have been victim of the same problem (only in my case it was kvm-pxe
that couldn't be upgraded).

During dist-upgrade, got the message:
Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/kvm-pxe_5.4.4-1ubuntu1.1_all.deb'
The upgrade will continue but the
'/var/cache/apt/archives/kvm-pxe_5.4.4-1ubuntu1.1_all.deb' package may not be
in a working state. Please consider submitting a bug report about it. unable to
install new version of `/usr/share/kvm/pxe-e1000.bin': No such file or directory
-
while setting up package kvm-pxe, got the message:
package kvm-pxe is already installed and configured
-
The final message from dist-upgrade was:
Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade is now aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).
-
Didn't prompt for restart at the end.

As such, I was left with an incomplete upgrade. Although it is running,
I don't trust the system now...

There are no clues as to how to finish the upgrade. For the end user, it is
unclear whether the system is ok or not. Visually it is inconsistent. And I
guess there might be some real issues, besides the cosmetic ones.
So, I would mark this bug's importance as medium or high.

I sugest two things:
1- the dist-upgrade shouldn't abort if at least all meta-packages were
installed (the desktop). One package that didn't upgrade shouldn't be enough to
abort the upgrade past the 'no-rollback' point. In a server environment it might
be done differently.
2- if dist-upgrade aborts after no-rollback point, then it should provide the
means to resume whatever it should have done, after the user (eventually) fixes
the issues.

I'll try to find how to implement that, but I don't have much experience
with python...

Applied, thanks for giving life to this patch Jeff.

I'll stick this into 2.6.34 and if we want we can backport it
to -stable after it cooks there for a while.

So it seems we'll have to wait some time, but there's hope!

[Bug 372014] Re: errors in dmesg

2010-03-04 Thread Gaspar Sinai
This is Ubuntu 9.10 here. I always install latest updates with update
manager.

ecryptfsd -V
ecryptfsd (ecryptfs-utils) 81

The directory tree under mount | grep ecryptfs does not have any zero
size files.

I cleared dmesg before logging in.

dmesg | grep eCrypt

[ 3537.369696] Valid eCryptfs headers not found in file header region or xattr
region

key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled;
returning -EIO

I am still looking for the culprit for the freezes and frequent need for
manual ext4 fs check on my notebook that has an SSD.

[Bug 372014] Re: errors in dmesg

2010-03-04 Thread Gaspar Sinai
I found the file that caused these messages.

cat ~/.cache/desktop-couch/desktop-couchdb.pid
cat: desktop-couchdb.pid: Input/output error

This was the second time that this file got corrupted. It is a coincidence?
It cause couchdb not to start. I removed the pid file.

From an end-user point of view it would help if a more verbose log
message would tell us which file is causing the problem, if it is de-
cryptable.

[Bug 123460] Re: Rhythmbox:Error while saving song information:Internal GStreamer problem

2010-01-10 Thread Miguel Gaspar
This behaviour is still a problem for me (in Ubuntu 9.10).
The timeout Per Ångström refers to has been (reluctantly) changed upstream to
120 seconds (after strenuous efforts from Per Ångström - great work!), but if
you happen to have a slow wi-fi (as a result of a long broken rtl8187 driver in
Ubuntu, as I have), and have full-cd audio files in a remote share, this will
probably bite you.
I don't think this is such a rare scenario as not to deserve attention.
So, I sugest that when changing metadata, the dialog should be left open while
'applying' changes, and leave to the user the decision to abort if it takes too
long.

[Bug 275340] Re: Remote Desktop - only accept from localhost option does not work

2009-09-17 Thread Gaspar
Hello Jacques,

I did test the connection thru SSH and it worked successfully with the option
set to lo. Here is what I did:
1. Configure vino to only use localhost interface, as detailed in #15.
2. Connect from a host with public IP address (a.b.e.f) to vino server on
remote host (a.b.c.d). Connection was tunneled using SSH.

Here is the output from netstat on the vino server:

[Bug 358654] Re: udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured

2009-04-19 Thread Miguel Gaspar
I had recently upgraded to Jaunty beta. Yesterday, after updating via
synaptic (mark all updates - smart upgrade), I didn't immediately reboot
and did another smart upgrade. Also, after all updates, i did 'apt-get
clean`. Now I have the same problem as mentioned in the first post, but
the proposed fix didn't work: after mounting the / and /boot partitions
for my ubuntu (which lives in an external usb disk) using a live cd,
chroot'd and did dpkg --configure -a, with no effect (seemed to do
nothing). After that, I did dpkg-reconfigure udev, with the following
output:

[Bug 308703] [NEW] System freezes after editing ubuntu main applications menu list

numlock and mouse pointer reacts.

[Bug 247153] [NEW] Volume group containing encrypted root not initialized if device is slow to appear

2008-07-09 Thread Gaspar Sinai
Public bug reported:

I installed ubuntu 8.0.4 to a USB flash drive. I have a volume group
that contains encrypted root and swap logical volumes. On some machines
the USB drive appears later than initramfs:/scripts/local-top/cryptroot
enters /conf/conf.d/cryptroot.

As a hack I put in a 10 seconds delay:

*** scripts/local-top/cryptroot-2008-07-09 00:26:36.0 +0900
--- scripts/local-top/cryptroot 2008-07-09 00:27:14.0 +0900
***
*** 271,274
--- 271,275
  # Do we have any settings from the /conf/conf.d/cryptroot file?
  if [ -r /conf/conf.d/cryptroot ]; then
+ sleep 10
while read mapping; do
setup_mapping $mapping

This is only temporary, a better solution could be to wait in
activate_vg for the device to appear before setting up the volume group,
just like https://launchpad.net/bugs/85640.

If you can provide a patch that is better than this I could try it out.
I will be offline for 3 weeks.
