Original poster here.

I switched to 19.04 (disco) in April, and I have never seen this bug
again since (default window manager and everything).

[Bug 1758651] Re: Xwayland crashed with signal 7 in mieqProcessDeviceEvent()

2018-07-26 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Video showing the problem: https://youtu.be/TYMBOmLgPHI
The exact same thing happens 30% of the times I close/open the lid of my laptop.

Steps:

1. I am logged in and use Firefox, Byobu and a few other desktop applications
2. Time to go back home, I close the lid of the laptop
3. At home, I reopen the lid
4. Instead of just being asked for a password, I am being asked to choose a
user. I started the video after seeing this, so this step is shown at 00:00
5. I click on my user, type my password and press Enter (00:14)
6. Purple screen (00:15)
7. Desktop shown very quickly (00:24) Not all icons are shown on the right bar,
maybe those that I had left open are missing?
8. Screen goes pitch black immediately, like a kind of sleeping (00:25)
9. Nothing happens. Seems like the laptop is really in a kind of sleeping state.
10. Losing patience, I press the Escape key of my keyboard (00:52)
11. I am asked for my password (00:54)
12. I type my password and hit the Enter key (01:05)
13. My desktop shows up, all of my open applications are gone. Sadness. (01:07)

As others have said in the numerous duplicates, I am not using Wayland,
but rather the out-of-the-box 2018.04.

Interestingly, when I reopen Byobu, my Byobu sessions are still alive.
Byobu is designed to survive without X. Unfortunately, my VirtualBox
virtual machines and LibreOffice always get killed violently, which
makes work difficult.

Don't hesitate to ask me for any detail or log. I can reproduce the
problem easily.

[Bug 1772362] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGBUS in ErrorFSigSafe(). Backtrace: pixman_image_composite32() from fbComposite()

2018-07-23 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Thanks Daniel for looking into this!
Here is how I came into this bug:

I installed 18.04 from scratch a day after it got released.

Twice per day I close the lid of my laptop and open it again after.
Usually it immediately asks me for the password and brings me back to
what I was doing.

But 30% of the time, it takes a long time (like a minute) before showing
me... not a password prompt, but instead, a login screen (like if I had
not yet a session) asking me to choose my user (there is only one user),
then enter my password. It then starts to load... and asks me for my
password AGAIN. Then it shows my desktop, but everything I was doing
before is gone, no more open windows. All of my virtual machines in
"Aborted" state. When I start Firefox it asks me whether I want to
restore my tabs. When I open Byobu it shows my tabs as I left them
(Byobu is designed to survive GUI crashes).

[Bug 1771716] Re: Resuming resets my session

2018-07-20 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
This keeps happening every two-three times I close then open my laptop's
lid. It means I lose my work, running VMs, etc, about 3 times per work
week.

If there is anything I can do to help solve this bug please let me know,
thanks!

[Bug 1778061] [NEW] Xwayland crashed with signal 7 in mieqProcessDeviceEvent()

2018-06-21 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

I pressed the "lock" key on my keyboard, and when I came back the laptop
did not ask me just for my password only, instead asking me for
username+password, then password again, then logging me into a new
session.

This happens sometimes since 18.04

[Bug 1775506] Re: update-manager crashed with ValueError in marked_install(): Object of different cache passed as argument to apt_pkg.DepCache method

2018-06-12 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
** Description changed:

The usual software update thing popped up, I clicked OK, entered my
password (I think), some time passed, and then I noticed this crash.
+
+ Afterwards I noticed that I had several previous meld processes still
+ running despite me having closed them some time before the crash. Not
+ sure whether it is related or not.

[Bug 1776390] [NEW] meld assert failure: python3: ../../src/xcb_io.c:259: poll_for_event: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed.

2018-06-11 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

I was using Meld and placing several pairs of synchronization points
(see https://stackoverflow.com/q/21571173/226958 about what these are)
when Meld froze. UI was not responding at all, and the following
appeared in the terminal:

[xcb] Unknown sequence number while processing queue
[xcb] Most likely this is a multi-threaded client and XInitThreads has not been
called
[xcb] Aborting, sorry about that.

[Bug 1771716] Re: Resuming resets my session

2018-05-21 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
The crash just happened again, and here are 3 fresh new files in my
/var/crash, whose date matches exactly the time of the crash:

_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.1000.crash
_usr_bin_Xwayland.120.crash
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.120.crash

About the first one I submitted this bug and marked it as a duplicate:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1772362

About the second one a bug already existed, confirmed with "Medium" importance:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1731911

About the third one I was told that I have out-of-date packages, I am
updating now. Please note that this is a fresh install of the recently
released 18.04, and updates are set to "weekly" so it can't be crazy old
either :-)

[Bug 1532508] Re: Screen contents revealed briefly on resume, before even unlocking

2018-05-10 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Original poster here, I confirm the bug is still present in 18.04 (work
on secret files -> close laptop lid -> anyone opening the lid can
sometimes see the content even without unlocking) although it happens
much less frequently than in 16.04 in my personal experience.

[Bug 1746660] [NEW] Chart does not refresh, even clicking does not redraw

2018-01-31 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

The chart is always the same image, it does not move.

I tried with an interval of 500 milliseconds or 2 seconds, same problem.

Unlike https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
multiload/+bug/1745457 clicking on it does not redraw the chart.
Actually when hovering the mouse over, different charts are displayed
one after the other, and when I withdraw the mouse, it is back to the
original chart unchanged.

[Bug 1745907] [NEW] Cannot copy/paste between some applications

2018-01-28 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

When copying simple text with CTRL-C CTRL-v (or menu or context menu)
between programs, I have noticed that some combinations work but other
do not (no text is pasted).

Gedit -> LibreOffice: No text pasted
LibreOffice -> Gedit: No text pasted

Firefox -> LibreOffice: OK
LibreOffice -> Firefox: Not text pasted

Geany -> Gedit: OK
Gedit -> Geany: Not text pasted

Geany -> LibreOffice: OK
LibreOffice -> Geany: No text pasted

Geany -> Firefox: OK
Firefox -> Geany: OK

OK means the copy/paste happened normally, with the text appearing normally
when pasting.
In Firefox I used the text area I am using right now at bugs.launchpad.net.
In LibreOffice I used Calc's formula bar.

It was working fine before I upgraded to 18.04

[Bug 1744657] [NEW] gnome-screensaver crashed with SIGSEGV in XGetScreenSaver()

2018-01-21 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Today I upgraded from Ubuntu 2016.04.1 LTS with "sudo do-release-upgrade -d"
I also switch back from Gnome to Ubuntu's default desktop environment, which I

[Bug 1646014] [NEW] After playlist playes entirely, stops after each song

2016-11-29 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Start Audacious with 4 playlists
2. Start playing a playlist
3. All songs play normally
4. After the last song of the playlist, playback stops
5. Double-click a song
6. It starts playing the song, and when that song finishes:
7. Expected: Audacious plays the other songs of the playlist. Actually:
Audacious stops playing.

Sounds a bit similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/audacious/+bug/225391 but in
my case it works fine the first time (steps 1 to 3) so I guess it might
be a different bug.

[Bug 205090] Re: Bad default ls colors for directories

2016-10-19 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Blue on black unreadable for me on Ubuntu Server 2016.04.1 (which has no
GUI, by the way)

How the color appears seems to depend on the console emulator, but on
Ubuntu Server it is hard to switch to an alternative console emulator.

Maybe that's the terminal of Ubuntu Server that needs to be fixed.

[Bug 1590658] [NEW] No way to decide when to stop recording

2016-06-09 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

The upstream is for GNOME and I use Unity so I am using byzanz command-
line.

There should be a way to finish the recording by pressing CTRL-C or
something similar.

For now the only workaround is to specify a long duration then have a
too-long GIF.

The official README says "A command line tool for testing purposes is
available, too" so forking might be necessary.

[Bug 1587320] [NEW] munpack randomly saves attachment in folder hierarchy instead of single file

2016-05-31 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

When the encoded filename happens to contain a slash (or several),
munpack saves the attachment in a directory hierarchy:

$ munpack 1.eml
tempdesc.txt: File exists
=XGBKXBXu9i4tDQ3Msba09/H6deosaguZG9jX= (application/msword)
$ ls -l
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nico nico20700 1.eml
drwxrwxr-x 2 nico nico 4096 =XGBKXBXu9i4tDQ3Msba09
$ ls -l =XGBKXBXu9i4tDQ3Msba09/
-rw--- 1 nico nico 13824 H6deosaguZG9jX=

The best fix would be to decode the filename too. In this example
=XGBKXBXu9i4tDQ3Msba09/H6deosaguZG9jX= can be decoded to 回复472期舆情专报.doc
as shown by the command below:

$ perl -C -E 'use Encode; say
Encode::decode("MIME-Header","=?GBK?B?u9i4tDQ3Msba09/H6deosaguZG9j?=");'

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-01-06 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Regarding my comment above: I realized that my problem happens also without any
USB, just on the local disk, for instance when extracting a big tar file or
deleting a directory that contains many files. Sorry if it is a different bug.
Merlijn Sebrechts, do you observe the same problem on the local disk only?
Also, I have found a workaround: Whenever manipulating a big file, throttle
disk usage by running commands in conjunction with `pv -L 5m`, the operation
will take more time but at least the system will not hang.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-01-05 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Reproduced every time on fresh install of Ubuntu 2015.10 on a Thinkpad
T550 with 16GB of RAM, all settings by default except a few Unity
tweaks, freshly rebooted.

When transferring a 364GB file, Ubuntu becomes extremely unresponsive.
Mouse very difficult to move but I managed to click Firefox icon, it
opened after a few minutes. On the opposite, I was unable to open a
terminal despite clicking its icon several times, not sure why. The copy
happens nonetheless, at 100 MB/second, and after it succeeds Ubuntu
becomes usable again.

[Bug 1131936] Re: gnome-screenshot makes it hard to take a screenshot using the keyboard

2015-07-21 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Confirmed in Ubuntu 2015.04, really annoying.

The ideal workflow would be:

1. Press `PrtSrc`
2. Type the filename
3. Press `Enter`

Right you have to press `Tab` 3 times between steps 23, which is not
ideal.

[Bug 1291902] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2014-03-13 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Several times per day, display freezes, with only the mouse moving.
Clicks and keyboard have no effect, system monitor does not move anymore.

Happens several times per day, randomly but usually after I perform a UI action
such as moving the mouse.
The exact same bug was already present in 2013.04

I have found a workaround:
- Press CTRL-ALT-F1
- Type unity --replace (or unity --restart)
- Press CTRL-ALT-F7
- You can then use the system but various elements are missing.
(Sometimes pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 then CTRL-ALT-F7 is enough)

[Bug 803760] [NEW] Unity notification icon always the same, even when Liferea has new items

2011-06-30 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

As you can see on the attached screenshot, the icon circled in red is
always the same, whether Liferea has zero new items (left side), or has
new items (right side).

There should be different icons depending on whether there are new unread items
or not.
It might be that the Messaging Indicator only changes when the software has
support for it, and liferea might not have it yet.

[Bug 783183] Re: Unclickable Links

2011-06-13 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I have the same problem (Natty, Firefox 4.0.1).

I have seen unclickable links in several places:
- Google Calendar event notification's Close link
- Facebook's X to remove a story
The problem is rare, these links work 95% of the time.

The last case is the most interesting, what is unclickable is not a
particular link but a zone of the screen. If I scroll, the unclickable
links are those who happen to be in this zone. See the screenshot, I
draw the unclickable zone.

[Bug 236376] Re: restore remaining minimized windows instead of showing the desktop

2011-06-13 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
In addition to being useless, bringing back old windows is painfully
slow, because those are unused programs already on swap memory.

On Natty's Unity, after pressing SUPER+D twice, when finally the desktop
becomes visible, it is partially hidden by the dash overlay that always decides
to open at that time. So it requires the user to click somewhere else so that
the dash disappear.
All in all, showing the desktop takes a good 6 seconds.

[Bug 423383] Re: ubuntuone-client-applet crashed with AttributeError in from_token_and_callback()

2009-09-16 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I just learnt about Ubuntu One an hour ago and decided to install it.
I followed the instructions at https://one.ubuntu.com/support/installation/

The ubuntuone-client-gnome installation did not work well, a apturl
process was still running 10 minutes later and I had to kill it. It
removed the installed packages and typed: sudo apt-get install
ubuntuone-client-gnome which worked this time.

Now when I launch ubuntuone-client-applet I immediately get this trace:
  File /var/lib/python-support/python2.6/dbus/connection.py, line 578, in
msg_reply_handler
reply_handler(*message.get_args_list(**get_args_opts))
  File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ubuntuone/oauthdesktop/auth.py, line

  File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ubuntuone/oauthdesktop/auth.py, line

line 286, in from_token_and_callback
parameters['oauth_token'] = token.key
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'key'

But it is not crashing the process. The tray icon shows X and when I click on
Connect, nothing seems to happen.
When I add a file in the Ubuntu One folder, a notification pretends to sync it,
but in fact the files do not make it to the server.

[Bug 376794] [NEW] Multisync installed through Add/Remove has no plugins at all

2009-05-15 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: multisync

Using Multisync 0.82 on Ubuntu 2009.04

Multisync is useless if no plugins at all are installed.

I installed multisync-gui via Add/Remove applications, and I could not
create a new synchronization pair, because the plugins drop-down lists
are empty.

I had to manually run sudo apt-get install libmultisync-plugin-all in
a terminal, restart Multisync, and then it was fine.

I suggest installing this package automatically when multisync is
installed.

[Bug 314937] [NEW] Input sometimes randomly stops working, with Qt and SCIM

2009-01-07 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1) On Ubuntu (Gnome) 2008.04 or 2008.10 with SCIM, open Anki.
2) Start adding new facts.
3) Randomly and rarely, after minutes or hours, it becomes impossible to input
anything, as if the keyboard did not work anymore. The keyboard is fine though,
as I can still use other applications and SCIM works well.
4) The only workaround I have found is to close and restart Anki.

The issue is discussed here:
http://code.google.com/p/anki/issues/detail?id=207

I have seen this happening twice with Konqueror too, but I almost never
use Konqueror so I can't really say whether it is usual.

Closing and reopening the window or application is the only workaround
we've found. When I really don't want to close the application yet, I
type in the Gnome text editor, copy, and right-click, paste into the
application.

Anki's maintainer says it is a bug within Qt or SCIM.

Thanks !

[Bug 306815] [NEW] Pasting over selected text in the search box behaves erratically

2008-12-10 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gjiten

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open gjiten and gedit
2) Type abcd in gjiten's search box
3) Type efgh in gedit, and copy it to the clipboard
4) With the mouse, select the content of gjiten's search box
5) Click on Paste in the Edit menu, or use the CTRL-V shortcut
6) Nothing happens. abcd is not replaced with efgh :-(

Reproducibility: 100%
Version: Gjiten 2.6-2 provided by Ubuntu 2008.10

The workaround is to press Suppr before pasting, then it works. But it
is painful, using a dictionary should be very fast.

[Bug 272659] [NEW] Gjiten could try to find kanjipad

2008-09-20 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gjiten

Gjiten has a big useful button labeled KanjiPad, which launches
kanjipad. But even after installing gjiten and kanjipad, clicking on
this button pops up a warning about not knowing where the kanjipad
executable is.

kanjipad is also an official Ubuntu package, so integration between them could
be improved.
By now, after installing both, user still needs to click
EditPreferencesGeneralKanjipad and enter /usr/bin/kanjipad. A typical
user would not know it is in /usr/bin, not everybody is literate with UNIX

[Bug 90576] Details

2008-07-07 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Hi James and thanks for caring :-)

I haven't tried for a long time, so I can't tell whether this crash
would happen again.

do you mean that you logged in as that user and then ran users-admin
again?

No, I did not run users-admin again. The user creation apparently went
fine and I logged out. I can not remember whether I properly closed the
users-admin application before logging out.

My two-cents hypothesis :
Maybe users-admin has been forced to close because the session was closing, and
maybe that could have caused it to crash ? And the report was only shown when
the next session opened ?

Cheers !

[Bug 159333] Workarounds

2008-05-22 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
In two days I have found two workarounds:

Workaround 1:
At boot, do not select install directly. Instead, load the live desktop, and
from there, click on the icon to install.

Workaround 2:
Use the alternate CD (when downloading from the Ubuntu website, check the
alternate checkbox)

[Bug 228416] Reproducible with Ubuntu (also alternate)

2008-05-22 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I get the same error message while installing Ubuntu 8.04 from the
alternate CD, all default settings except no internet connection and
encrypted LVM:

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the
menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and

When I press Continue, I have the option to retry the Select and
install software step again, which I did. It failed again with the same
message.

The non-alternate CDs run and install fine for 8.04 and earlier versions.

[Bug 159333] Same after installing of Hardy from scratch

2008-05-20 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Today I decided to install Ubuntu Heron. Default install, all options by
default, no dual boot or anything non-standard.

I inserted the live cd, booted my computer (Acer Aspire 1640), clicked
Next Next Next (all default options, including automatic partitioning of
the whole disk). I finally ended up with the nice Heron desktop,
together with a Ubiquity crash report which is probably unrelated.

I restarted the computer and got this on my screen:
GRUB Loading stage 1.5
GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 15

I can't do anything, and pressing 'e' does nothing.

More to come:
It is not so easy to read the filesystem configuration to guess what went
wrong, because I have no OS now, but I will try with a live cd.

[Bug 159333] boot directory

2008-05-20 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Following my last comment:
The hard drive does not contain a /boot/grub/device.map file. I attached the
result of ls -l command on the boot directory to show that there is no grub
directory there.
For those who may wonder, I insist that those files were copied from the
mounted hard drive, they do not belong to the live cd.

[Bug 149489] How to reproduce

2008-04-21 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
How to reproduce :

- Run the Live CD of Ubuntu Hardy RC.
- In the examples folder, open oo-maxwell.odt
- Right-click a formula and click edit.
- It says that the file is read-only and asks whether I want to edit a copy,
click ok.
- Right-click a formula and click object.
- Click on the last tab, called Macro.
- It says OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform
this task. Please install a JRE and restart OpenOffice.org..
- Click ok. The same dialog reappears immediately.
- Click ok again. Reappears again.
- Repeat. Forever.

No way to get rid of it nicely, have to reboot (or kill OpenOffice for those
who know how to).
100% reproducible.

My optional story:
As a science-oriented guy, when I ran the Live CD, the first thing that
attracted me was the example Maxwell document. When I saw the nice formulas,
I wanted to modify them. And so far I did not find how to do it, it is not
obvious :-( Everybody in my case will right-click the formula, look for the
right tab, and get stuck on this blocking bug. That is to say: many people will
get this bug, please fix it quickly before Hardy release !

[Bug 186866] [NEW] Tab title with foreign characters truncated at wrong place

2008-01-28 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

You will understand immediately when you see the snapshots.
Here is the silly tab label:
*̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|̡̡̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̡̡ *̡͌l̡*

Because there are many tabs and the tab title is rather long, it gets
truncated, that's fine.
But it is not truncated at the right place, so the truncated label is still too
long, and overlaps onto the X button and even over the next tab.
It should not overlap anything.
I guess the label size calculation uses some approximation that does not always
work.

Thanks,
Nicolas.

[Bug 176227] Taskbar shows a floppy icon near icon for korganizer

2007-12-13 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Severity: very low
Using Kubuntu Gutsy

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open korganizer
2) Add a todo or modify/add anything

And you can now see the bug:
In the taskbar (where you can reach minimized windows), the button for
korganizer looks like this:

korganizer icon floppy icon Calendar

The floppy icon disappears after some minutes.
It is useless as korganizer recently got rid of the Save action, everything
is saved automatically, and hidden from the user, except this detail.
Some users may wonder whether their data is really safe if they see this icon
but no way to save.

Nicolas.

[Bug 153055] Re: scim causes thunderbird, etc to crash

2007-11-17 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
On fully updated Gutsy, reproduceable every time :

If (and only if) SCIM Anthy is on, then the following crashes Thunderbird:
- Creating a new message
- Saving a message
- Opening a draft
- Opening an received email (inbox)
- Creating a subfolder
- Opening the addressbook
- Opening HelpAbout
- I haven't tried everything, but pretty much everything

Example of the HelpAbout: the About pop-up window appears quickly, grey
and empty, and Thunderbird crashes immediately.
No visible effect on SCIM.
A workaround is obviously to turn SCIM off whenever performing a Thunderbird
action other than edition.

Good luck,
Nicolas Raoul

[Bug 158168] KOrganizer does not show events from calendar in local file

2007-10-28 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim
Version: KOrganizer 3.5.6 (enterprise 0.20070907.709405)//EN on KDE 3.5.8 on an
up-to-date Ubuntu Gutsy.

Steps to reproduce:

- Have a example.vcs calendar file ready, I personally used an older VCalendar
2.0 file saved from KOrganizer 3.3.1.
- Start KOrganizer.
- In the Calendar pane, click on Add
- Select Calendar in Local File and click Ok.
- Select your example.vcs and click Ok.
- At that point, nothing appeared. I expected to see my events from example.vcs
show up, but nothing.

It is not a format/compatibility/vcs/ics problem, because when I do an
Export (in the File menu), it produces a file where I can see my
events from the example.vcs file. It is definitely a bug in the user
interface.

[Bug 127809] EXIF info not updated on UI when going to non-EXIF image

Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

1) Get a picture with EXIF information, let's call it pic1.jpg
2) Get a picture with no EXIF information, let's call it pic2.jpg
3) In an empty directory, put pic1.jpg and pic2.jpg
4) Open pic1.jpg with eog
5) In the EXIF panel, select any EXIF attribute to have a look at the values
6) Click Next to advance to the next picture, pic2.jpg

[Bug 65609] Side effects ?

2007-07-17 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I had the same installLocation problem, unable to install new
extensions, and removing my extensions.rdf fixed the problem.

Oddly enough, I noticed a side effect: switching the UI from English to German.
I installed Ubuntu in German but for some reason Firefox was in English, maybe
because the profile comes from a distro that I installed in English .

Here is the chronology of what I did :
1) Ubuntu in German, Firefox in English
2) I try to install an add-on
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1916
3) I get the installLocation error
4) I look up and find the trick on this page
5) I close Firefox
6) I delete extensions.rdf
7) I restart Firefox
8) I install the add-on successfully
9) I restart Firefox
10) I notice that Firefox's menus look a bit unfamiliar. Indeed, they are in
German instead of English

I don't mind having Firefox in German, it's better, but I find it
surprising, maybe the removal trick has some side effects.

[Bug 105623] Follow-up to my last message

2007-07-11 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I retried the exact same installation and this time I only had the first
problem (vgchange sluggish) and not the second one (debootstrap
warning). Well, not exactly the same, I left the default
country/timezone to go faster, but that is the only difference.

So in the end, the installation just took 12 minutes more than usual.
Not the end of the world, but the first time it happened I was really
thinking it was frozen and rebooted.

Good luck for fixing this bug !

[Bug 105623] vgachange sluggish and installation fails

2007-07-10 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
I had Ubuntu 6.10 installed with my filesystems on LVM.
I wanted to wipe them out and perform a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 on the
same partitions.

So I downloaded and burnt the alternate CD (for LVM support), and booted
on it. The beginning was as usual. Then came the partitionning wizard, I
gave the small lone ext3 partition for /boot and proceeded with the
special LVM wizard.

It said Keep current partition layout and configure LVM ? so I pressed
Yes.

It said 1 existing volume group have been found. Please indicate
whether you want to activate them. Activate existing volume groups? so
I pressed Yes. Then a blue screen (of death?) appeared... and
stayed... for a very long time... after two minutes I thought it was
frozen, so I pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to get a console, and checked the
running processes, the last four were:

/bin/sh /bin/partman
parted_server
/bin/sh /lib/partman/choose_partition/30lvm/do_option log-output -t partman-lvm
vgchange -a y
vgchange -a y

I had to wait for 12 minutes (time measured with my watch) before
vgchange finally decided to go on. (Info: I have 3 logical volumes)

Then the installation started installing packages for a while, and
suddenly turned red saying Debootstrap warning. Warning: Failure while
configuring base packages. This will be attempted 5 times. After
failing 5 times, it said Installation step failed. The failing step is:
Configure the package manager

I could find this kind of errors in /var/log/syslog:

debootstrap: Errors were encoutered while processing: console-setup volumeid
dmsetup udev ubuntu-minimal pcmciautils
...
apt-install: locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or
directory

The CD-check tool says the CD is valid.
Should I fill a separate bug for the second part of my story, after vgchange ?
Has this vgchange bug been fixed in Gusty ? I could give it a try tomorrow.
Nicolas.

[Bug 81144] Can't reproduce on Feisty

2007-05-29 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Meanwhile I upgraded to Feisty, and I can't reproduce the bug anymore.
Since this bug has not been reported by anyone else (no duplicates) and nobody
achieved to reproduce it, I think it can be closed.
Nicolas.

[Bug 116151] (Feisty final) k3b says Success whereas mkisofs failed

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

1) I launched a DVD burn of a directory.
2) My fault: I removed a file from this directory (a .swp file, by exiting vim).
3) mkisofs is surprised that a file has disappeared, and fails, which is normal.

What I would have expected:
4a) k3b says that mkisofs failed and declares the burn as a failure.
What really happened:
4b) k3b goes on burning and says the burn was a success.

The attached screenshot shows everything.

** Affects: k3b (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
