[Bug 1969633] Re: Continuous Bluetooth timeouts [Broadcom BCM20702A]

2022-04-20 Thread Robert Pearson
So how do I get Canonical to fix the kernel bug? How do I notify them of
the bug?

[Bug 1969633] [NEW] Bluetooth not connecting

2022-04-20 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

My computer is an ASUS A88XM-A with AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7. Pluggable USB
2 Bluetooth dongle. Logitech K480 Bluetooth keyboard and Keychron K7
Bluetooth "keyboard".

The Bluetooth manager finds the K480 but pairing always fails. The
keyboard flashes blue but dongle steady blue.

The K7 does not even show up. (But then the "keyboard" does not even
work using a USB cable.)

Bought dongle and K480 4 years ago, never got them to work at all, gave
up as a bad investment.

I ordered a K7 wireless keyboard. What I received was a Bluetooth
keyboard. Bluetooth does not work. Plugging it in with a USB cable
partially works (function keys and End key do not work).

Got the K480 working with my Samsung Galaxy 5 Android tablet, but not
with my computer. I want Bluetooth but do not know how to get it to
work. It still does not work after 4 years of cold boots and the
replacement of the power supply.

I went to the Keychron Facebook Linux group. They were complaining that
Ubuntu does not support Bluetooth and that the Keychron function keys do
not work.

[Bug 1802821] Re: Serious design flaw using large external drives.

2022-04-09 Thread Robert Pearson
I read that Paragon Software NTFS drivers will be part of the 3.5
kernel. I would like to use NTFS so that other computers can actually
read my data.

The current drives I'm using are 8 TB Seagate external drives with a 2
year warranty. Their price went up to $150 when on sale. I will probably
get a Seagate Exos x18 18 TB drive for 2 times the cost and 2.25 times
the capacity and 2.5 times the warranty period. (Also greater MTBF and
annual data usage.)

It would be nice if Ubuntu could access an 18 TB drive with an NTFS at
greater than continental drift speeds.

[Bug 1942832] Re: Ubuntu MATE 21.04 installation disables Install button.

2022-04-07 Thread Robert Pearson
Three re-installs later, I finally got Ubuntu MATE 20.04.4 to finally
work. I am ignoring 21.04 due to the limited support.

Congratulations! It seems that there is finally a version in the same
class as Ubuntu MATE 18.04.

Caja is part of the Ubuntu MATE package but apparently unsupported.

Caja after the latest update takes minutes to open a menu and it takes 3
times to open files with Eye of MATE.

Nautilus has similar problems but is not as slow. But then it crashes.

How do I get Caja fixed?

** Description changed:

The latest update of Caja seems to have replaced the existing algorithms
with ones that do not scale. Right clicking takes >3 minutes to open the
menu if there are more than 300 files in the current folder. Opening a
directory with 12,000 files takes so long that I get to catch up on my
  reading.

Also Caja frequently crashes (even more often than Chrome).

[Bug 1940724] Re: 20.04.2 does not connect HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 scanner via USB2

2022-03-25 Thread Robert Pearson
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I am trying Ubuntu MATE 20.04.2 to see what works and what is broken.

My scanner is an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 scanner connected to my ASUS
  A88XM-A motherboard via USB2 cable.

With previous releases, I use VueScan Pro. Work fine. With 20.04.2 it
cannot find my scanner at all. I tried the bundled Document Scanner app.
It finds the scanner but cannot connect to it to actually scan.

Apparently, something is wrong with connecting a scanner with a USB
  cable.

If you need more information, please tell me how to get it and send it
  to you.

[Bug 1962197] [NEW] sudo apt --fix-broken install crashes

2022-02-24 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu MATE so buggy I had to reinstall (UEFI mode). Now HP OfficeJet
Pro 7740 will not print but scanner works fine (It is an all-in-one)
printer. Cannon install tesseract-ocr.

Tried booting Ubuntu MATE 18.04 on a different drive. Get flashing dots
all night. Will not boot.

Machine is ASUS A88XM-A with 32GB DRam. A WD 1TB SSD with Ubuntu Mate
20.04.3 (not working). A WD 4TB HD with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 (not working).

Running Linux Mint with Cinamon has no problem printing. Just Ubuntu.

Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.13.0-28-generic downloads 17% then
crashes. repeatedly!

Re: [Bug 1951219] Re: "Windows List" craches

2021-11-17 Thread Robert Pearson
Norbert,
Thank you for responding.
“apport-collect 1951219” does not work.
The first time a Chrome window opened asking for permission. I gave it. A
window opens asking if I want to report the bug. I answer yes. Then I see a
pop-up claiming that information is being gathered; then nothing.

For Ubuntu, I no longer report bugs because they never assign anyone to
actually fix them. I now realize the MATE is a whole bunch of code dumped
on the kernel and requires a different bug reporting ritual. But the MATE
ritual does not work.
Robert Pearson

P.S. Tried “apport-bug mate-panel”. Does not work. As a world-class
developer and a Master electrical engineer, I find the current situation
incredible. No wonder Linus Tech Tips hates Linux. However, he did say that
the server version is solid and reliable (not a collection of junkware and
bugware {thousands of bugs held together by a few lines of code)). Can you
point me in the right direction to migrate to the server distros of Linux?

[Bug 1950250] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 something is Caja is badly broken

Caja is part of the Ubuntu MATE package but apparently unsupported.

[Bug 1950107] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 window-list crashed

2021-11-07 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

I got an error pop-up about a program crashing. I did not recognize the
name as pertaining to Ubuntu MATE, so I closed it. The list of windows
at the bottom of the screen was blank. Google how to reset the Windows
List Manager. Dic alt-cntl-F2. Then the display went black (no signal).
Had to turn off (without shutting down - blank screen). Had to reboot.
Tried to report bug but was told that although it is in the distro, it
is not supported (like Caja).

[Bug 1948726] [NEW] When Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 wakes up HDMI display is dim

2021-10-25 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

My computer is an ASUS A88XM-A with AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7 APU with
Samsung SyncMaster TA350 TV/monitor connected via HDMI. Running Ubuntu
MATE 20.04.3. When the computer goes to sleep and tries to wake, the
display is very dim. I can just see enough to shutdown.

When shutting down, the brightness is normal. When I reboot, the
computer brightness is normal.

Apparently, something is wrong with the wake-up driver code.

I believe this is because the coders assumed I have a CPU and a separate
GPU card. I have an AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7 APU. My next machine will include
a Ryzen R5 5500U APU. Not a gamer. Do not need a high-end GPU (even if I
could afford one).

Engrampa can now open an .epub file!

Again, thank you for responding.

Thank you for responding. Installed p7zip-rar. Had previously installed rar
but installed it again.

Engrampa now can open an .rar file. Am not looking to see if I have a .7zip
file to try.

Again, thank you for responding! (You are the 5th to do so in 3 years!)

[Bug 1945160] [NEW] Caja significantly slower with large directories

2021-09-27 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

In 18.04 opening a directory with O(40,000) files took a minute or two.
With 20.04.3 it takes 7 minutes and counting.

Apparently, the algorithm has been changed to one which does not scale.
Since Caja knows the size of the directory, it can estimate the number
of files and can choose an appropriate algorithm.

If I cannot even open the directory, Ubuntu 20.04.3 becomes useless.

[Bug 1942955] Re: Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 installer crashed

2021-09-08 Thread Robert Pearson
I-Cat

I already have a "bootable USB drive". That is what I used to try and
install Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3. That will not change the fact that the
partition editor in gparted, Disks, and the installer do not have a UEFI
bootable partition type in their options. The only option is BIOS
bootable (yeah! lets all go back to the way it was done in 1998). I do
not even know the GUID for the UEFI bootable partition type.

For your questions about my system.
Currently Ubuntu MATE 18.04. I tried later versions but each one broke code
that works in 18.04.
ASUS A88XM-A with 32 GB 1866 MHz DDR2 (4 Crucial DIMMs)
AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7 running at 3.1 GHz
4TB Seagate Iron Wolf SATA HDD (this has Ubuntu MATE 18.04 installed for UEFI
booting)
(new) 1TB WD Blue SATA SSD (this is where I am attempting to install Ubuntu
MATE 20.04.3 with UEFI booting)
I copied the contents of the UEFI System Partition from the 4TB HHD to the UEFI
System Partition on the 1TB SSD.
I use HDMI to connect my computer to my Samsung SyncMate TA350 TV/Monitor.

During installation, I noticed many missing firmware errors. I believe
that they were not included because the iso file is for BIOS booting
only. I need an iso intended for UEFI or BIOS booting. Any drive > 2TB (
4TB drives are now about $75) requires GUID Partition Table and UEFI
booting.

New symptoms. No sound. I go to Control Center -> Sound -> Hardware and
select "Built-in Audio 1 Output / 1 Input Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output.
Test the speakers. Left and right pass. Profile: Digital Stereo (HDMI)
Output. I click close. No sound. I reopen Sound -> Hardware and Ubuntu
has reset it to (IEC958) output. Tried multiple times. Still no sount.
Ran my Blu ray player through the monitor. Sound. 20.04.3 no sound.
Rebooted to 18.04, Sound.

How do I fix a broken installation when the iso and Installer are so
bad?

I would like to help improve the iso and Installer so they are up to
2021, not 1998. Who can I contact?

Robert Pearson

P.S. What is ripi?

I-Cat Now why would I want to install Python 2? Python is a dialect of C.
It split into Python 2 for those determined to program in C and Python 3
for those who want to "play/pretend" they are doing Object-Oriented
programming or Functional programming. As the C-ites aged out, Python 2
died. Why resurrect it?

Re: [Bug 1942955] Re: Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 installer crashed

2021-09-08 Thread Robert Pearson
After it crashed, I shut down the system and then restarted. Enough had
been installed to boot and then I updated and reinstalled my apps. The
reason the first partition is W95Fat32 is that the drive was originally
blank (no partition table). The installer could not handle a blank drive. I
know that the UEFI System Partition has to be a FAT file system, but
neither gparted now Disks has a "Bootable" partition type.

I do know that Disk Image Writer created Windows type media for small
drives (MBR not GUID PT, EFI Compatibility Partition for the code that
won't fit in the MBR). I believe that is because whoever created the iso
does not believe in UEFI.

When I boot, the ASUS A88MX-A firmware offers me a choice of UEFI or no
UEFI. The UEFI choice does not work. The no UEFI choice does.

I did have trouble with the Software Boutique. PlayOnLinux could not
install because the version in the Boutique relies on Python 2 which has
been discontinued instead of Python 3. VirtualBox could not install because
the version in Ubuntu requires that Ubuntu MUST be installed with a CD and
demands that the CD be inserted in /cdrom. I installed it from the Oracle
site.

I do thank you for responding. During the last 3 years, I have only gotten
4 responses. 1 really tried to help! I am still working on the issue.

I would like to help improve the Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE installer. I am a
Unix System V expert, not Ubuntu. But at least I can help move from BIOS
booting (pre 1998) to UEFI booting. And the limited "Something else" can be
updated using gparted and Disks - and bootable partition type can be added
with the correct GUID.

Again. Thank you for responding.

[Bug 1741607] Re: Software Boutique is broken on 18.04

2021-09-07 Thread Robert Pearson
In Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3, PlayOnLinux won't install because it requires
Python 2 which has been depreciated. VirtualBox won't install because it
requires the installation media to be a CD.

Who is responsible for checking the packages in the Software Boutique
and keeping them up to date?

[Bug 1942955] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 installer crashed

2021-09-07 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

Where to start. Apparently the iso (ubuntu-mate-20.04.3-desktop-
amd64.iso) assumes every computer runs Windows and has small disks (2 TB
or smaller). The "Disk Image Writer" formats the jump drive as MBR with
bootable partition, a EFI partition for Windows compatibility and the
rest of the drive (59GB) as unusable.

I purchased a 1TB WD Blue SATA SSD and tried to install in it. The first
five times failed. The drive was initially blank and the installer
disabled the Install button. I used 18.04 Disks to creat the GUID
partition table and create the UEFI System Partition, the Ubuntu MATE
partition, the Linux swap partition, and a NTFS data partition.

I was at least able to start the installation. Then the installer
crashed.

[Bug 1942832] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 21.04 installation disables Install button.

2021-09-06 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

Downloaded Ubuntu MATE. Opened .iso with Disk Image Writer. Burned to
32GB SanDisk jump drive. Booted UEFI jump drive. Selected English(US).
Checked "install third-party..." Tried "Install alongside them".
Cancelled when installed chose the wrong drive to install to. Tried
"Something else".

When it scanned my drives it did find the brand new WD Blue 1TB SSD. But
the "install" key is disables so cannot even begin to install.

[Bug 1940724] [NEW] 20.04.2 does not connect HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 scanner via USB2

2021-08-20 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

I am trying Ubuntu MATE 20.04.2 to see what works and what is broken.

My scanner is an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 scanner connected to my ASUS
A88XM-A motherboard via USB2 cable.

With previous releases, I use VueScan Pro. Work fine. With 20.04.2 it
cannot find my scanner at all. I tried the bundled Document Scanner app.
It finds the scanner but cannot connect to it to actually scan.

Apparently, something is wrong with connecting a scanner with a USB
cable.

If you need more information, please tell me how to get it and send it
to you.

[Bug 1939245] [NEW] Unable to find or create trash directory

2021-08-08 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

When I attempt to move a file to trash I get the following error
message:

Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?
details Unable to find or create trash directory for

/media/robert/Shared/.Trash-1000 exists
/media/robert/Shared/.Trash-0 exists

Permissions for .Trash-1000 are root:root Cannot change them to
robert:robert. Not in Caja. Not in Caja as administrator. chown
robert:robert .Trash-1000 claims to have made the changes, but ls -l
.Trash-1000 shows that they are still root:root.

Move to Trash works on external volumes (NTFS or Ext4) and other
partition (Ext4) on internal drive.

Please help.

[Bug 1938864] Re: Software Boutique failes

2021-08-04 Thread Robert Pearson
Who is responsible for bugs/errors/mistakes in the code you bundle for a
distro? Bugs can be in the included data as well as the code. Does
anyone take responsibility?

Is the Software Boutique part of Ubuntu 20.04 or part of Ubuntu MATE
20.04.

Response is standard trying to find reason NOT to do anything. Not
helpful.

Notifications are fun. But this bug has been around for more than 6 years
and has never been actually fixed. The bug is in LO since other apps *can*
print duplex. Try to *actually* FIX IT!

Re: [Bug 1925981] Re: 20.04.02 introduces noise into the audio channel when using YouTube

2021-05-26 Thread Robert Pearson
Can you please try 20.04 with kernel 4.15?

How? I am not a Linux guru, only an expert system (both hardware and
software) designer. Apparently the kernel coders made some assumptions
about the hardware. I will continue to use 18.04 until one of the “updates”
actually works.

P.S. I only recommend Ubuntu because Microsoft and Apple are so much
worse!

2021-04-23 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

My hardware:
HDMI output to TV/Monitor. Optical cable to Phonak TVLink. Bluetooth to
compilot. ComPilot to hearing aids.

High level of noise with 20.04. When reboot to 18.04 noise goes away.

Not Hardware. Just bad code in 20.04.02 audio.

[Bug 1907732] Re: Latest mouse driver broken

2020-12-14 Thread Robert Pearson
Yes. When I said "hardware not programming" I meant that the problem was
with the hardware not the code.

Already ordered replacement hardware.

I admit I was hasty. Just because the problem suddenly occurred just
after a software "update" does not mean it was the update. It is just
that in my experience with Ubuntu, the software is usually the problem.
In fact, I usually do not report bugs because my bug reports are deleted
without any attempt to fix the bugs. At least one bug (easily fixed) is
over 6 years old - still not fixed. Who is responsible for the quality
of Ubuntu and who is responsible for regression testing. You cannot do
regression testing using only one computer.

[Bug 1907732] Re: Latest mouse driver broken

2020-12-10 Thread Robert Pearson
Tried switching trackball from right-handed to left-handed. Problem
switched sides. Ordered new trackball. Close this issue; hardware not
programming (I hesitate to mis-use the word "software").

You still need to fix the WiFi driver for 20.04 so I can change from
18.04 to 20.04.

2020-12-10 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

The latest update for 18.04 has broken mouse driver. I have to click the
select button 3 or 4 times before it is recognized.

Try regression testing on more than one machine before releasing
updates.

The mouse freezes in place and all keyboard and mouse buttons have no
effect.

Yes, I know it is 18.04. I tried 19.04 but it broke code that worked in
18.04. I tried 19.10 but it broke code that worked in 18.04. I tried
20.04 but it broke code that worked in 18.04. Are we seeing a trend
here.

When I tried 20.04, the WiFi drivers were broken so that I could not
even install it.

Congratulations. Ubuntu has finally achieved the same quality as code
from Microsoft.

I do not know why I am wasting time reporting a bug. All my other bug
reports were closed without any attempt to fix the problem.

Please fix the 20.04 WiFi bug so I can downgrade to it.

willing to waste more time in an attempt to help find the bug in Ubuntu,
but I meed instructions on HOW to do what you want.

[Bug 1899858] [NEW] Distribution 20.04.1 does not support Atheros 802.11n wireless LAN cards

2020-10-14 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

Distribution 20.04.1 does not support Atheros 802.11n wireless LAN
cards. Either the module (ath9k) is missing or the "improved" version
does not work.

I am currently running Ubuntu MATE 18.04.5. Since this is no longer supported,
I tried to install 20.04.1. Unfortunately this version does not support my WiFi
hardware (versions 13.04-19.10 do).
So I am stuck at 18.04 until 20.04 is actually ready to be released. (Is it an
alpha version?)

I tried a BrosTrend WiFi adapter from another computer since I have the
driver on CD. That dose not work either.

[Bug 1899388] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 broke WiFi network code

2020-10-11 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

All previous versions of Ubuntu MATE (13.04 through 19.10) recognized my
WiFi hardware and I was able to install.

20.04.1 breaks that code making it impossible to get a network
connection. No network, no updating while installing or adding
additional applications.

Thumbs down. When will you release a version that knows about WiFi
networks?

[Bug 1899366] Re: Ubuntu MATE 10.04 released prematurely

2020-10-11 Thread Robert Pearson
This computer currently has Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 18.04.05 LTS
(18.04) on it. What would you like to do?

I did not know about the 18.04.05. !?!?!?!?!?

My second disk is partitioned as Free Space 2.1MB, UEFI System Partition
589MB FAT, Ubuntu 451GB Ext4, Swap 8.4GB Ext4, and 3.5TB NTFS with all
my data.

My first disk is partitioned as 1.0MB sacrificed to Bill Gates, UEFI
system Partition 273MB FAT, Linux 2.0TB Ext4, Swap 8.6GB Swap

I also have a 4TB and an 8TB USB3 external drives plugged in.

Also the Control Center is missing network (only has advanced network
which is useless.)

Also code allows only one file attached.

[Bug 1899366] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 10.04 released prematurely

2020-10-11 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

The first time I tried to install 20.04 I noticed that the option to
update as installed was disabled. However since the ubuntu coders do NOT
BELIEVE in separating code and data, I stopped the installation and made
a backup of /home/robert. (I never place data here but Ubuntu does.)

The second time I tried to install 20.04 I again noticed that the update
option was still disabled. I went the the Try 20.04 and noticed the
network indicator was missing. Unlike its predecessors (13.04-19.10)
20.04 was not able to recognize my WiFi hardware. Luckily I had WiFi
hardware from another computer with a mini-CD containing drivers.

The third time I tried to install 20.04 I did the Try first to make sure
the display resolution was correct and that the WiFi was working. Then I
got the error message: ubi-partman failed with exitcode 141. Further
information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running
this setup again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may
fail entirely or may be broken.

[Bug 1898795] [NEW] Pluma RE crashes

Public bug reported:

Doing a global search-and-replace of

P.S. the search and replace previously reported with \1 still does not work
making the RE mode virtually useless.

message:

Saving crash reporting state failed. Can't set auto or never

[Bug 1831348] Re: The Progress Bar for emptying the Trash stuck at 0

2020-10-04 Thread Robert Pearson
Why don't you just flag all new bugs as "ignored", since I have never
seen any activity to actually fix any bugs.

When my company bought a system with Unix System V on it, I got a book
of known bugs. There were over 500 pages with two pages/page of known
bugs. The catch is that AT never attempted to actually FIX any of
these bugs. Nor were there any workarounds.

[Bug 1808736] Re: Saving crash report failed

2020-10-03 Thread Robert Pearson
Here's a novel idea:

Why not actually try to fix the bugs rather than just classifying them
as "Expired".

Or why not be honest and just flag all new bugs as "Expired" so we users
won't waste our time posting bug reports.

[Bug 1898396] [NEW] engrampa archive manager cannot unzip .epub files

2020-10-03 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

To quote "EPUB 3 Best Practices"

The specification for this is the Open Container Format (OCF) 3.0, and it is
literally a .zip file,
though it uses the .epub extension.

Apparently the coder decided checking the extension was easier than
actually looking in the file and recognizing that it is a zip file.

Workaround - Use command line unzip

[Bug 1883066] Re: After update cannot mount Android tablet

2020-09-19 Thread Robert Pearson
When my company first got Unix, they included a book of known errors. I
say book because it was over 200 pages, each page contained two actual
pages of known bugs. The thing is, they list the bugs but no one assumes
responsibility to actually FIX a bug. One thing Linux inherited from
Unix. DON'T FIX BUGS!

[Bug 1883066] [NEW] After update cannot mount Android tablet

2020-06-11 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

This is one of the reasons I went from Ubuntu MATE 19.10 to 18.04. The
updates broke the old code which allowed mounting Android Tablets.

Again. New code breaks old code. Not enough regression testing before

LibreWriter still does not do duplex printing. Atril does. HP OfficeJet Pro
7740 USB connection Ubuntu MATE 18.04 (printing does not work at all with
Ubuntu MATE 19.10 so I rolled back to 18.04). Need to steal the code from
Atril to get LibreWriter printing 2-sided.
