[Bug 1778137] [NEW] fontypython crashes on start-up in 18.04

2018-06-21 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

On a new installation of 18.04, fontypython crashes when run. Thanks for
any help you can give! Here is the output when run from a terminal:

[Bug 1649453] Re: systemd starts postfix before resolver

2017-06-26 Thread Scott Thatcher
Sorry to jump on this six-month-old bug, but it seems to be describing
exactly what's still going wrong for me. When I reboot my system running
Postfix, no mail is sent, and I get the following output when I run
"mailq":

-Queue ID- --Size-- Arrival Time -Sender/Recipient---
47F291B6B 511 Mon Jun 26 10:53:26 thatcher@
(Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=mail.X
type=MX: Host not found, try again)
 thatc...@truman.edu

-- 0 Kbytes in 1 Request.

I put the X's in for privacy, although I don't know that it matters if
you need to see the addresses. All runs normally if I restart Postfix
after the system has finished booting.

Here is the result from the same command run by the original submitter
of this bug:

postfix.service +11ms

└─systemd-remount-fs.service @4.119s +36ms
  └─system.slice @1.804s
└─-.slice @1.610s

I don't really understand everything about this output, but it looks
like Postfix is still starting before systemd-resolved.service.

This problem first showed up in Yackety, and I've been keeping on top of
updates since that point. It was certainly not resolved after January.
I've now updated to Zesty using the upgrade tool (not a fresh install),
where the behavior persists.

I did try purging and reinstalling Postscript, but that didn't help. I'm
happy to provide any other diagnostic information you might like, and
thanks for your work on this.

[Bug 989172] [NEW] Change in Capitalization Requirements for Samba Printers?

2012-04-26 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

I've noticed that between Oneiric and Precise, the requirements for
capitalization of domains and printer names seem to have changed. For
example, for many releases I've typed domain/server/printer when asked
to set up a network printer using Samba. In precise, I finally figured
out that I must type DOMAIN/SERVER/PRINTER. While this may not be a
bug in system-config-printer, per se, I spent a long time trying to
diagnose this problem before stumbling on the solution, and it would be
good to have some warning from the dialog box, especially since the
examples are in lower case. I've tested side-by-side with an old release
to make sure that it isn't some change that's happened on our print
server.

It seemed worth it to report this bug, since the default Gnome printer
configuration tool seems to be broken---it could lead a lot of people to
a frustrating experience. Thanks for the work you do on Ubuntu.

[Bug 973509] [NEW] VMWare View Open Client logs back in automatically after logout

2012-04-04 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

When selecting Logout from a Windows XP virtual machine, the viewer
closes, and a dialog box is shown briefly. Almost immediately, however,
the viewer logs back in to the virtual machine. Expected behavior, and
behavior from previous releases of Ubuntu and Debian, would be to stay
logged out. If one is very quick, one can click Cancel to stop the
automatic login, but I have to put my machine under heavy load to make
the dialog stay up long enough to click, so that's not really an option.

See this bug report:
http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/issues/detail?id=100

As mentioned there, packages from Natty and Debian Squeeze show this
behavior when installed in Oeneric, so this may be a problem with a
related package, but I haven't been able to track down which one yet.

[Bug 584816] Re: note fails in non-interactive mode

2011-06-04 Thread Scott Thatcher
I don't claim to know what I'm doing, but I noticed that if I edited the

 dump||Dump|D:s   = \$opt_D, # string,  optional
to
 dump|Dump|D:s= \$opt_D, # string, optional
the non-interactive dump command worked again. Can't speak for any other
problems.

[Bug 673858] Re: Application appears to crash on any compiz desktop effect

2010-11-11 Thread Scott Thatcher
A further note: This problem doesn't seem to appear when running the
ubuntu desktop live image and installing the viewer in that environment.
So, maybe something that's only an issue on upgrade? Is there some way
to troubleshoot something related to the upgrade that would be causing
the problem?

[Bug 673858] [NEW] Application appears to crash on any compiz desktop effect

2010-11-10 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-view-open-client

This bug appeared after upgrading from lucid to maverick. After running
the vmware-view client and connecting to a remote Windows instance, the
viewer will crash after any instance of a compiz desktop effect. For
example, hitting ALT-TAB to trigger window switching, or triggering the
effect to zoom out and show all desktops or the effect to scale and show
all windows on a desktop.

Actually, after turning off desktop effects, I get the same behavior
again when anything related to the window is done, including just
clicking my pointer on the window title bar.

The error I get on the command line is this: NOT_IMPLEMENTED
gtk/desktopDlg.cc:532

I'll attach a full log. Googling that error message yields the following
bug report:

http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/issues/detail?id=86

This behavior wasn't present in lucid, where everything worked
wonderfully. Thanks for your work on this.

[Bug 570233] [NEW] Computer boots to text when on battery power

2010-04-26 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

When booting while my laptop is plugged in, I get the graphical splash
screen, but when the laptop is on battery power, I get the text screen.
That's the text screen that resembles the graphical one, with Ubuntu
10.4 over four dots that change color. This is a very reproducible
issue, with the laptop always coming up with a graphical splash while
plugged in, and with it coming up in text mode at least 9 times out of
10 when on battery power.

After the text mode boot, the computer ends up at a black screen. To get
to the graphical login screen, I have to do something like CTRL-ALT-F1
to get to a text login, then follow that with ALT-F7 to get to the
graphical login screen.

The computer might eventually get to the graphical login on its own, but
it takes at least longer than a minute to do so, and I've only been able
to wait long enough for it to happen once.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

[Bug 570233] Re: Computer boots to text when on battery power

2010-04-26 Thread Scott Thatcher
I should add a couple more things.

I initially assumed that it might have something to do with the
processor running slower while in battery power and something not being
detected or run in time, so the default going to text mode. However, the
behavior was unchanged when I changed BIOS settings to set the computer
to run at full speed even on battery power. I don't know how soon the OS
takes over control of power-saving, but I thought I'd add that bit of
information.

Also, I can't directly hit ALT-F7 or CTRL-ALT-F7 to get to the graphical
login. I do have to switch away to another screen first.

[Bug 564247] [NEW] xpdf renders and scrolls very slowly

2010-04-15 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xpdf

I've recently upgraded to Lucid beta 2, and I've noticed a big change in
xpdf. I'm used to xpdf rendering and scrolling very quickly, and after
the upgrade it scrolls so slowly as to be unusable for many pdf's. It's

[Bug 564247] Re: xpdf renders and scrolls very slowly

2010-04-15 Thread Scott Thatcher
Just an addition. After going back and looking at the behavior in Karmic
and Lucid, I noticed that the cursor switches to the waiting circle
each time the pdf scrolls by one click of the scroll wheel in lucid,
whereas I only got that waiting cursor while moving from one page to the
next in Karmic. Is xpdf re-rendering the entire page each time the page
scrolls, which would explain the slow-down?

This behavior was consistent over all the PDF's a tried.

[Bug 244353] Re: OpenOffice exports PDF with arabic numerals instead of regular numbers

2008-11-03 Thread Scott Thatcher
Sorry if more information isn't needed. I've seen this bug, too--the
version where strange numerals appear in English files that contain
formulas. Easily reproducible using the numbers.odt file available on
the openoffice bug page. This is in 64-bit Intrepid and Hardy. However,
I can verify that the bug did not seem to be present when I installed
OOO300m9 in Hardy from the .deb available on the openoffice.org site.

Unchecking the various PDF options in the export dialog didn't change
the behavior of the bug for me.

As someone who creates lots of PDF's from files with formulas, I'll say
thanks in advance for your work on this!

After updating from Hardy to Intrepid beta, I notice that I can't find
Konsole in the KDE applications menu. I thought it used to be in
System (and other terminals are usually in Utilities), but now I
can't find it. I apologize if this has been reported before or if this
is merely an artifact of my system. /usr/bin/konsole is there, and it
will run if I call the command manually.

[Bug 280786] Re: Konsole not listed in KDE Menu?

2008-10-09 Thread Scott Thatcher
Oops. A new user, created after upgrading, seems to have Konsole just
where it should be in the menu. I had deleted my .kde and .kde4
directories prior to upgrading in order to make sure I didn't have any
configuration file incompatibilities with the new version of KDE, so I
had assumed that there wouldn't be any difference between my old user
account and a new one. I guess I don't know where information about the
KDE menu is stored, then.

[Bug 280786] Re: Konsole not listed in KDE Menu?

2008-10-09 Thread Scott Thatcher
Deleted my .local directory, and Konsole re-appeared in the KDE menu. I
don't remember doing anything with the .local directory or the KDE menu
on purpose, but I assume this problem is probably related to some chance
change in that folder and is not a problem that others would face. Sorry
for taking up space here.

Can add Firefox branding be treated in a similar manner to install
proprietary nvidia drivers? Ubuntu provides a fairly easy and
understandable way to do the second of these.

[Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad

2008-09-09 Thread Scott Thatcher
This problem is even more apparent to me when running syndaemon -i 0.5
-k

About every third keystroke doesn't trigger the Disable/Enable. While
typing, for example, fff..., quickly, it is still very possible to
use the trackpad, although it is jumpy. I know syndaemon used to work
correctly for me--I remember testing it when I first discovered the
command. That was back in Gutsy. I've only recently started noticing
this annoying behavior, although I switched to Hardy back in May. Could
something else have changed recently?

My hardware is an HP tx1000 laptop, and I get this:
 [ 38.532819] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 6.3, id: 0x180b1, caps:
0xa04713/0x20
 [ 38.593153] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input9
in my dmesg output.

[Bug 64244] Re: Reading a bad PPD file causes KDE not to read _any_ PPD file

2008-03-04 Thread Scott Thatcher
It looks like it doesn't happen any more in Gutsy. I tried loading a bad
PPD file, and the Driver Settings tab still appears.

[Bug 184089] Font installer not included in KDE 4.0 packages.

2008-01-18 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

First, thanks for packaging the new KDE 4.0.

When installing the packages from http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-
members-kde4/ubuntu on my Gutsy machine, I noticed that the font
installer was not included. This may seem like a small thing, but the
font management features of the new installer in KDE 4 are something
I've really been looking forward to. I assume this application should be
in kdebase-workspace because that's where it shows up in the KDE svn.

When I asked Craig Drummond, who wrote the font installer, about whether
it would be included in KDE 4, he said it should be, and offered this
information:

The font installer *requires* fontconfig and Xft development packages
to be installed when compiling. And I can only assume that who ever did
the Gutsy KDE4 packages (and the review above) did not have one of these
installed.

I hope that proves to be helpful, and thanks again for making this new
software available.

[Bug 47749] Re: Font with Symbol encoding displays correctly, but doesn't print

2007-12-03 Thread Scott Thatcher
I noticed that this bug's status was changed to invalid and that the
last reply I sent didn't seem to make it into the bug report (probably
my fault). The content of my reply was it still happens with the same
examples I posted originally. I doesn't bother me that the bug was
closed--I don't encounter it any more because I've changed the way I do
things. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't closed because my
reply to the last question didn't get here. Thanks, again!

Re: [Bug 64244] Re: Reading a bad PPD file causes KDE not to read _any_ PPD file

2007-07-11 Thread Scott Thatcher
Yes, this still happens in Fiesty. Since the bad ppd files I originally ran
into have been fixed, I had to make my own to test. Again, it's not a serious
problem, but it can be confusing to someone who runs into one bad ppd file.

[Bug 64238] HP 4240 and 4250 ppd files appear to have syntax errors

2006-10-05 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-filters-ppds

The following PPD files:

HP-LaserJet_4240-Postscript.ppd
HP-LaserJet_4250-Postscript.ppd

appear to have mal-formed lines in them. The lines in question look like
this (there are about 5 of these lines in each file):

*UIConstraints: *HPManualDuplex True * PageRegion EnvMonarch

I don't know anything about PPD file format, but I do know that the KDE
printer manager chokes on these files as written, but it doesn't choke
on them if I delete the space between the * and the PageRegion.

I know that these files don't originate in Ubuntu, but I thought I
should report it to the Unbuntu bug database since I found the problem
while running Ubuntu. I'll see if I can figure out the right upstream
place to report this as well.

The problem is made worse by the fact that the KDE printer configuration
tools don't seem to respond too well to reading a bad ppd file. Once
they read this bad file, the Driver Settings tab disappears from _all_
printers, even ones with good PPD files. I'll try to figure out the
right package against which to report this KDE bug.

Thanks for your work in making a great operating system.

[Bug 64244] Reading a bad PPD file causes KDE not to read _any_ PPD file

2006-10-05 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeprint

When trying to install an HP 4250 printer, I ran into what I believe was
a bad PPD file (see bug#64238). However, this apparently bad PPD file
was made worse by the behavior of the KDE print system. While trying to
install the printer, KDE's printer configuration utility would give an
error related to the bad PPD file. However, I had no problem installing
the printer from Gnome using Gnome's tools (this was before I knew that
the PPD file was bad).

After that point, the printer would show up fine in KDE, but the Driver
Settings tab would be absent from the print properties dialog box.
That's what I would expect if KDE couldn't read the PPD file.

The problem was that once KDE tried to read the bad PPD file for this
printer, the Driver Settings tab would disappear from _all_ of my
configured printers, not just the HP 4250. This is most noticable while
running the System Settings utility. Closing System Settings completely
would fix the problem until I tried to access the 4250 printer
settings dialog again.

Now that I understand it, it's not the end of the world, but it sure was
confusing not to be able to set the Driver Settings for any printer.

Thanks for your work on Ubuntu!
