[Bug 1649453] Re: systemd starts postfix before resolver
Sorry to jump on this six-month-old bug, but it seems to be describing exactly what's still going wrong for me. When I reboot my system running Postfix, no mail is sent, and I get the following output when I run "mailq": -Queue ID- --Size-- Arrival Time -Sender/Recipient--- 47F291B6B 511 Mon Jun 26 10:53:26 thatcher@ (Host or domain name not found. I put the X's in for privacy, although I don't know that it matters if you need to see the addresses. All runs normally if I restart Postfix after the system has finished booting. [Bug 989172] [NEW] Change in Capitalization Requirements for Samba Printers?
Public bug reported: I've noticed that between Oneiric and Precise, the requirements for capitalization of domains and printer names seem to have changed. For example, for many releases I've typed domain/server/printer when asked to set up a network printer using Samba. In precise, I finally figured out that I must type DOMAIN/SERVER/PRINTER. While this may not be a bug in system-config-printer, per se, I spent a long time trying to diagnose this problem before stumbling on the solution, and it would be good to have some warning from the dialog box, especially since the examples are in lower case. I've tested side-by-side with an old release to make sure that it isn't some change that's happened on our print server. It seemed worth it to report this bug, since the default Gnome printer configuration tool seems to be broken---it could lead a lot of people to a frustrating experience. [Bug 973509] [NEW] VMWare View Open Client logs back in automatically after logout
Public bug reported: When selecting Logout from a Windows XP virtual machine, the viewer closes, and a dialog box is shown briefly. Almost immediately, however, the viewer logs back in to the virtual machine. Expected behavior, and behavior from previous releases of Ubuntu and Debian, would be to stay logged out. If one is very quick, one can click Cancel to stop the automatic login, but I have to put my machine under heavy load to make the dialog stay up long enough to click, so that's not really an option. See this bug report: http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/issues/detail?id=100 As mentioned there, packages from Natty and Debian Squeeze show this behavior when installed in Oeneric, so this may be a problem with a related package, but I haven't been able to track down which one yet. [Bug 673858] [NEW] Application appears to crash on any compiz desktop effect
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vmware-view-open-client This bug appeared after upgrading from lucid to maverick. After running the vmware-view client and connecting to a remote Windows instance, the viewer will crash after any instance of a compiz desktop effect. For example, hitting ALT-TAB to trigger window switching, or triggering the effect to zoom out and show all desktops or the effect to scale and show all windows on a desktop. [Bug 570233] [NEW] Computer boots to text when on battery power
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth When booting while my laptop is plugged in, I get the graphical splash screen, but when the laptop is on battery power, I get the text screen. That's the text screen that resembles the graphical one, with Ubuntu 10.4 over four dots that change color. This is a very reproducible issue, with the laptop always coming up with a graphical splash while plugged in, and with it coming up in text mode at least 9 times out of 10 when on battery power. After the text mode boot, the computer ends up at a black screen. To get to the graphical login screen, I have to do something like CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a text login, then follow that with ALT-F7 to get to the graphical login screen. The computer might eventually get to the graphical login on its own, but it takes at least longer than a minute to do so, and I've only been able to wait long enough for it to happen once. [Bug 570233] Re: Computer boots to text when on battery power
I should add a couple more things. I initially assumed that it might have something to do with the processor running slower while in battery power and something not being detected or run in time, so the default going to text mode. However, the behavior was unchanged when I changed BIOS settings to set the computer to run at full speed even on battery power. I don't know how soon the OS takes over control of power-saving, but I thought I'd add that bit of information. Also, I can't directly hit ALT-F7 or CTRL-ALT-F7 to get to the graphical login. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace First, thanks for packaging the new KDE 4.0. When installing the packages from http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu- members-kde4/ubuntu on my Gutsy machine, I noticed that the font installer was not included. This may seem like a small thing, but the font management features of the new installer in KDE 4 are something I've really been looking forward to. I assume this application should be in kdebase-workspace because that's where it shows up in the KDE svn. When I asked Craig Drummond, who wrote the font installer, about whether it would be included in KDE 4, he said it should be, and offered this information: The font installer *requires* fontconfig and Xft development packages to be installed when compiling. And I can only assume that who ever did the Gutsy KDE4 packages (and the review above) did not have one of these installed. I hope that proves to be helpful, and thanks again for making this new software available. [Bug 47749] Re: Font with Symbol encoding displays correctly, but doesn't print
I noticed that this bug's status was changed to invalid and that the last reply I sent didn't seem to make it into the bug report (probably my fault). The content of my reply was it still happens with the same examples I posted originally. I doesn't bother me that the bug was closed--I don't encounter it any more because I've changed the way I do things. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't closed because my reply to the last question didn't get here. Thanks, again! Re: [Bug 64244] Re: Reading a bad PPD file causes KDE not to read _any_ PPD file
Yes, this still happens in Fiesty. Since the bad ppd files I originally ran into have been fixed, I had to make my own to test. Again, it's not a serious problem, but it can be confusing to someone who runs into one bad ppd file. [Bug 64238] HP 4240 and 4250 ppd files appear to have syntax errors
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: foomatic-filters-ppds The following PPD files: HP-LaserJet_4240-Postscript.ppd HP-LaserJet_4250-Postscript.ppd appear to have mal-formed lines in them. The lines in question look like this (there are about 5 of these lines in each file): *UIConstraints: *HPManualDuplex True * PageRegion EnvMonarch I don't know anything about PPD file format, but I do know that the KDE printer manager chokes on these files as written, but it doesn't choke on them if I delete the space between the * and the PageRegion. I know that these files don't originate in Ubuntu, but I thought I should report it to the Unbuntu bug database since I found the problem while running Ubuntu. I'll see if I can figure out the right upstream place to report this as well. The problem is made worse by the fact that the KDE printer configuration tools don't seem to respond too well to reading a bad ppd file. Once they read this bad file, the Driver Settings tab disappears from _all_ printers, even ones with good PPD files. I'll try to figure out the right package against which to report this KDE bug. Thanks for your work in making a great operating system. [Bug 64244] Reading a bad PPD file causes KDE not to read _any_ PPD file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdeprint When trying to install an HP 4250 printer, I ran into what I believe was a bad PPD file (see bug#64238). However, this apparently bad PPD file was made worse by the behavior of the KDE print system. While trying to install the printer, KDE's printer configuration utility would give an error related to the bad PPD file. However, I had no problem installing the printer from Gnome using Gnome's tools (this was before I knew that the PPD file was bad). After that point, the printer would show up fine in KDE, but the Driver Settings tab would be absent from the print properties dialog box. That's what I would expect if KDE couldn't read the PPD file. The problem was that once KDE tried to read the bad PPD file for this printer, the Driver Settings tab would disappear from _all_ of my configured printers, not just the HP 4250. This is most noticable while running the System Settings utility. Closing System Settings completely would fix the problem until I tried to access the 4250 printer settings dialog again. Now that I understand it, it's not the end of the world, but it sure was confusing not to be able to set the Driver Settings for any printer. Thanks for your work on Ubuntu!
