For what it's worth, I downloaded and installed mainline 3.6-rc6 from
kernel.org and it fixed the issue.

[Bug 389453] Re: Ubuntu will not boot, freezes at Starting up...

2010-07-02 Thread Victor Trac
Well, this isn't an Ubuntu bug after all. I am able to reproduce this
same behavior on Windows 7 Pro - if the USB dongle is plugged in when
the system goes through POST, I am not able to boot to either Ubuntu
10.04 or Windows 7. Windows 7 freezes during the middle of its boot
procedure, and I can only boot the system if I start off with the dongle
unplugged and then plug it in after the OS starts.

This leads me to believe it's a problem with the Logitech USB dongle and
my hardware (which, btw, is a Biostar TA790GX motherboard, AMD Phenom II
940, 8 Gigs of RAM).

[Bug 564441] [NEW] k9copy refuses to use a different DVD output directory

2010-04-16 Thread Victor Trac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k9copy

1) Ubuntu 9.10
2) k9copy:
  Installed: 2.3.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.3.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.3.3-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/multiverse Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

To reproduce: I click on Configure k9copy and select the DVD icon.
I change the Output directory to something other than /tmp/kde-
username/k9copy. I click Apply and then OK. I click Configure k9copy
and see that the Output Directory is again back to /tmp/kde-
username/k9copy. This happens no matter how often I do this.

I did realize that I can go down to the Paths icon, set the DVD output
there, and that saves properly, and even updates the DVD icon's Output
Directory. So when the change is made at the DVD section, it does not
get saved. When the change is made in the Paths section, it gets
properly saved.

[Bug 477891] Re: keepassx don't copy the password into buffer by pressing Ctrl+C

2010-02-13 Thread Victor Trac
I've always experienced the bug as the original author posted, but now
it is worse. I'm not sure what has changed on my system - perhaps some
X or Gnome updates.

KeePassX now refuses to copy into the system clipboard completely,
whether I right-click-copy, double-click on the password field, or
ctrl+c. It is using *some* clipboard, because when I copy text from
KeePassX, I can paste back into KeePassX (into another field or into the
search field), but pasting into something outside of KeePassX results in
nothing. I can also copy text originating from outside of KeePassX and
paste into KeePassX.

Ubuntu 9.10 and KeePass 0.4.1-1.

[Bug 349943] Re: Screen blinks randomly on external monitor

2010-02-02 Thread Victor Trac
I think I am also experiencing this. ATI Radeon HD3300 onboard video
with DVI using ATI fglrx drivers out to a Dell 2407WFP monitor. It'll
be fine for months, and then it'll just start randomly blinking, like
it's gone into DPMI sleep and then immediately back on. The inverval
seems completely random, from every 15 seconds to 5-10 minutes, and this
can last for hours, but generally I get annoyed and reboot to make it go
back to normal.

Load or usage doesn't seem to be related in my case. It's happening
right now and my load is nearly 0, and I just have a web browser open.

I had this happen on 9.04 as well as 9.10.

[Bug 389453] Re: Ubuntu will not boot, freezes at Starting up...

2010-01-16 Thread Victor Trac
I also am experiencing this issue. I isolated it to a single USB device

receiver. The USB ID is ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. If it's plugged
in, my system hangs, but I can wait until it gets into userland to plug
it in and my system works fine.

[Bug 480019] [NEW] Unable to print a particular PDF on Samsung ML-2010

Public bug reported:

This is on Ubuntu 9.10 with splix-2.0.0-2ubuntu2. I went to fedex.com
to generate a prepaid shipping paper and was unable to print the output

opened it as a PDF using the default Document Viewer (Evince, I

[Bug 355150] [NEW] xorg consumes CPU, scrollwheel stops working, applications stutter/freeze after 2-3 hrs of usage

2009-04-04 Thread Victor Trac
Public bug reported:

I'm experiencing a few problems with 9.04 xorg, a Radeon 3300, and
fglrx:

1) Screen flashes randomly, as if the video card power cycles. My
monitor (Dell 2407WFP) shows the DVI symbol when it comes back, so it
seems like it's doing some sort of power save/resume.

2) I configured xorg to turn off my monitor after X minutes, but it
doesn't seem to do anything.

3) This last one is harder to pinpoint, but it seems like after Xorg has
been running for a while (1-3 hours), Xorg consumes as much CPU as it
can and the overall system becomes very sluggish. I'm unable to open
any new applications. The scrollwheel on my mouse quits working. Open
applications, such as firefox, continue to work slowly. This may come
up only after I use the computer after it idles for longer than the
monitor sleep-mode setting - I'm not certain yet.

I found that the problem is gsynaptics-init needs to be run upon resume.

maybe make gsynaptics installed be default and already include this
script?).

[Bug 282081] Re: X hangs and not recoverable after screen power save mode on Dell Hybrid Studio

2008-11-02 Thread Victor Trac
This doesn't have anything to do with OpenGL, I don't think. On a brand
new, pretty much virgin 8.10 install on my Dell D630 laptop with an
Intel GM965 video chipset, I had this happen when returning from the
blank screen saver. It doesn't happen everytime. All I see is the
background and the mouse with no menus or windows. The mouse responds
normally, but the only recourse is to power off the computer and reboot.

[Bug 268010] [NEW] Xorg sporatically garbled on boot on Dell D630 (Intel GM965)

2008-09-09 Thread Victor Trac
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when booting, Ubuntu freezes on the Xorg initialization screen
(black window with progress bar) with a grid-like garbled screen with
vertical banding. It looks almost like the wrong resolution or refresh
rate is set. The Dell D630 laptop appears to be completely locked up

to hold down the power button until the machine shuts off. On the next
boot, however, it seems to work fine. I haven't been able to pin down
an exact pattern, but it seems like it only happens on a cold boot.

[Bug 268012] [NEW] gnome-terminal ignores some custom alt+letter keyboard shortcuts

2008-09-09 Thread Victor Trac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I went to Edit-Keyboard Shortcuts in gnome-terminal to configure
alternate keyboard shortcuts using Alt instead of Ctrl, but not all
shortcuts work. The shortcut editor allows me to configure the shortcut
and the new shortcut appears in the menus, but shortcuts for alt+t (new
tab) and alt+v (paste), do not work. The other custom-configured
shortcuts do work - alt+n (new window), alt+w (close tab), alt+c (copy),
and alt+q (close window) do work as expected.

[Bug 95078] Re: Firefox eats 100% of CPU when opens a spreadsheet in google's documents and spreadsheets

2008-04-14 Thread Victor Trac
I'm pretty sure all of these issues are resolved with FF3, which in its
beta state is far superior to FF 2.x. You guys who still have problems
should try it.

[Bug 179526] restricted-manager overwrites existing x.org.conf

2007-12-31 Thread Victor Trac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

I had a highly customized /etc/X11/xorg.conf with an InputDevice section
tailored to make my Alps touchpad work properly. After running
restricted-manager to enable ATI 3d drivers, I found my x.org.conf to
be completely overwritten by basically the default Ubuntu xorg.conf
file. restricted-manager should have not touched the InputDevice
sections, or at least warned me that my xorg.conf would be overwritten.
A backup of my old config should have been created. An even better
option would have been to allow me to merge the changes.

[Bug 95078] Re: Firefox eats 100% of CPU when opens a spreadsheet in google's documents and spreadsheets

2007-12-26 Thread Victor Trac
I also have this problem. Firefox is fine until I load up a google
spreadsheet, at which point the entire system crawls. Tabs take 2-3
seconds to switch back and forth, which makes it very unusable. When I
close the Google spreadsheet tab, the problem goes away and the system
is responsive. Gmail and Reader are fine, albiet a little slower than
on Windows on the same machine. Google Docs works fine when I boot on
Windows. On my two Gentoo-based desktops, I've never had a problem with
Google Docs slowing down Firefox. Perhaps it is something specific to
Ubuntu..

Dell D610
1 Gig RAM
ATI X300 (fglrx driver)

I also noticed that X.org is near the top of 'top' when I have a google
spreadsheet open.

[Bug 95078] Re: Firefox eats 100% of CPU when opens a spreadsheet in google's documents and spreadsheets

2007-12-26 Thread Victor Trac
I did a little more investigating.. On my Ubuntu 7.10 Dell D610 laptop,
it happens on both the Ubuntu version of Firefox 2.0.11 and the official
Mozilla.org 2.0.11 tarball. Google Documents is fine, but Google
Spreadsheet makes the entire system crawl.. and looking carefully at the
output of 'top', it is caused by the X.org process, not the firefox-bin
process.

However, I downloaded Swiftfox 3.0b3 for Pentium M, and Google Calc no
longer cause a problem like it does on Firefox 2.0.11. I can't seem to
find a 2.0.11 version of Swiftfox so I'm unable to test to see if it is
something in the standard Ubuntu/Mozilla build process that doesn't jive
with Pentium M processors.
