[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-05-06 Thread Zed
Probably not in scope but the Tor Browser also fails to start properly:
https://forum.torproject.org/t/ubuntu-24-04-daily-and-tor-tabs-crashing-
immediately/11822/7. I can see why Ubuntu might not want to allow such
programs but, a universal distribution should be cognizant that some of
its users value privacy and that default apparmor profiles make it
problematic for such users to maintain their privacy.

[Bug 1848921] Re: iwlwifi firmware crashes intel 9260ac [8086:2526] subsystem [8086:0010]

2020-05-12 Thread Zed Freejack
Update after running 5.6.7-050607-generic for more time now.
Despite my initial enthusiasm, I cannot recommend updating to
5.6.7-050607-generic wholeheartedly. The wifi and the system is snappy, but the
fans are running 24/7 and when running form battery the battery life time is
not good. Estimated a third of the time from the good old times of Kubuntu
19.04... Investigations with tlp/powertop show a lot of power consumption from
"Network interface: wlp59s0 (iwlwifi)" and "btusb" on light work load.

[Bug 1848921] Re: iwlwifi firmware crashes intel 9260ac [8086:2526] subsystem [8086:0010]

2020-05-05 Thread Zed Freejack
My machine is a Dell XPS 15 9570 with an Intel Wireless-AC 9260.
Worked fine with Kubuntu 19.04 and 19.10. Later on on 19.10 (I believe
5.3.0-51-generic) I got loads of hang ups and Wifi drop outs (seconds to
minutes). Thought it was the swappines problem or the wifi problem of the
kernel. Was adventurous and upgraded to Kubuntu 20.04 pretty early. Wifi went
from bad to terrible to not usable (5.4.0-28-generic)

A few days ago installed the mainline kernel following this instruction.
How to upgrade kernel to latest version on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa Linux
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-upgrade-kernel-to-latest-version-on-ubuntu-20-04-focal-fossa-linux

Because the kernel is not signed I had to disable secure boot in the
UEFI. Got to sign the kernel later on...

Now running 5.6.7-050607-generic since a few days and am quite happy.
Snappy system, reliable WiFi. Fingers crossed.

Same bug on ubuntu 16.04 LTS with kernel 4.10 with Optimus

[Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

2016-06-27 Thread Zed
>I don't really understand the issue here.
???
According to system settings the notebook should suspend when lid is closed but
actually this does not happen. Instead it continues to run as if nothing had
happened.

Issue described clear in bug description.

>All previous version had this bug that it used to suspend regardless of the
>settings which was fixed in xenial.
This is wrong, in 14.04 all work fine and you can set "do nothing" in settings
and get right behaver (no suspend on led close)

Was the fix for bug 942634 in Unity 5.8 not enough to solve this?
Nop, seems that it's not unity problem, it's ati old card's drivers buggy and
laggy.

[Bug 877445] Re: XCB errors in OpenGL applications caused by fglrx 11.8

2011-11-29 Thread zed
Thanks to your help, I managed to find a fix (with a little tweak)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870917

What I did:

sudo mv libGL.so libGL.so.bak
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib32/libGL.so

sudo mv libGL.so.1 libGL.so.1.bak
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1

The fix didn't stick, so, I moved libGL.so.1.2 and linked it:

cd /usr/lib32/
sudo mv libGL.so.1.2 ~/libGL.so.1.2.bak
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2

I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with ati mobility chip sets, I
had to do this fix with my PC which had: Radeon HD 3450.
However my other PC with Radeon HD 5450 had no problems.

Sheado reported that he had issue with /usr/lib instead of /usr/lib32.

Thanks again.

[Bug 879164] Re: gnome-panel crashes when trying to move panel

2011-10-23 Thread zed
I was getting a similar problem:

(gnome-panel:2160): GLib-GObject-WARNING **:
/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.30.0/./gobject/gsignal.c:2295: signal
`size_request' is invalid for instance `0xcddac0'

I tried removing gnome-panels, and gnome-shell, however when you install
gnome-shell you get gnome-panel.
I thought it was graphics driver but it wasn't.

If you log in as guest, gnome-shell works. (I was using Gnome without effects)
Gnome shell default settings work. Therefore, it has to do with the settings.
Also, I remembered I was configuring the gnome panels when the gnome shell
started to crash.

This is what fixed it for me:

Go into terminal
Code:

cd ~/.config/dconf

mv user use

Log out or reboot. (I rebooted, lightDM problems)

By renaming the user settings you make a backup at the same time.
This just resets the gnome-shell settings and this worked for me. It took me a
while to figure out where Gnome 3 settings were kept.

I hope that helps.

[Bug 577840] [NEW] instable wifi connection transfering data

2010-05-09 Thread volume-zed
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from karmic to lucid I'm having problems with my wifi
connection. I'm using a laptop with an intel 3945. It connects without
problems to open as wpa or wep2 secured networks but loses connection
after some time. In most cases this will happen when transfering data
like downloading files or streaming media. Sometimtes I can reconnect
via network-manager, sometimes I have to unload and load the kernel
module (iwl3945) before it will reconnect to the network. The problem
occurs with the current kernel 2.6.32-22-generic as well as with the two
older versions 2.6.32-21-generic and 2.6.32-20-generic.

[Bug 577840] Re: instable wifi connection transfering data

2010-05-09 Thread volume-zed
In the meantime I tried with the mainline-kernel 2.6.34-999-generic and
so far it seems the problem doesn't exist here.

** Summary changed:

- instable wifi connection transfering data
+ wifi connection loss when transfering data

** Description changed:

Since upgrading from karmic to lucid I'm having problems with my wifi
- connection. I'm using a laptop with an intel 3945. It connects without
- problems to open as wpa or wep2 secured networks but loses connection
- after some time. In most cases this will happen when transfering data
- like downloading files or streaming media. Sometimtes I can reconnect
- via network-manager, sometimes I have to unload and load the kernel
- module (iwl3945) before it will reconnect to the network. The problem
- occurs with the current kernel 2.6.32-22-generic as well as with the two
- older versions 2.6.32-21-generic and 2.6.32-20-generic.

[Bug 462706] [NEW] sleep stops keyboard and mouse

2009-10-28 Thread Zed Burnett
Public bug reported:

HP Pavilion tx2500 CTO notebook/tablet system with fresh Karmic RC
installation, all available updates applied. Available restricted
drivers in use. System went to sleep after sitting unattended for some
time, hitting the power switch woke it to the 'unlock' dialogue.
Keyboard and mouse would not come back up, totally non-responsive. Had
to plug in a USB mouse, switch to a new login and reboot (terminating
the other session).

[Bug 462714] [NEW] loud popping sounds, no actual audio output

2009-10-28 Thread Zed Burnett
Public bug reported:

HP Pavilion tx2500 CTO notebook/tablet system with fresh Karmic RC
installation, all available updates applied. Available restricted
drivers in use. During boot, session start and odd other times there
will be a 'pop' from the speakers, similar to what I'm used to when this
machine goes to sleep, but louder. Often followed by a pause and
another pop. Also occurs when Amarok starts, stops.

[Bug 462714] Re: loud popping sounds, no actual audio output

2009-10-28 Thread Zed Burnett
Need to change this one, the audio actually does work. The popping is
still occurring, but the lack of audio is coming from the mute kicking
in by itself at the beginning of the session. Mute state in the
software volume control does not consistently match the state of the
mute light on the hardware volume control.

[Bug 394100] [NEW] Thunderbird asks for mail server tls certificates on startup, but offers no choise to use password

2009-06-30 Thread Zed
Public bug reported:

I just started using TB with S/MIME signing of messages with my new
personal digital certificate. Problem is that TB seemingly automatically
wants to use my personal cert for authenticating with the inbox server
(in my case POP3). My provider's inbox server supports TLS and no secure
authentication. When TB goes fetching e-mails, it asks me to select a
certificate to identify with.

Now, when I hit cancel, everything works fine. But when I select my
identity, my cert gets rejected and I cannot fetch my e-mails anymore.

At the moment, I have to either hit cancel (at least TB remembers that
preference for this program session) or delete my personal cert from
the cert list.

My service provider tells me that it is not to be used = they do not
support me authenticating with it (understandable).

Now, is there an option somewhere so that I tell TB not to use my
certificate for authenticating and instead use the usual password auth?

Thanks in advance,
Ernst Rohlicek

Well, sorry for bothering. I just found some well-hidden configuration
editor, which contains an option to, at least globally, turn using
certificate to login off.

It is the

  mail.server.default.auth_login

option, which is by default set to true, which is generally good, but
not fine when you can only use password auth.

Anyways, hope this gets indexed by Google - public knowledge.

Zed said 7 minutes ago:

I have the same problem.
Setting mail.server.default.auth_login to false does NOT solve it.

On http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings#Mail..2A there is a
listing of the options and their descriptions. There is no description
for mail.server.default.auth_login, but there is one for
mail.auth_login, which may or may not have the same meaning:

mail.auth_login
Boolean

True (default): Enable SASL.
False: Disable SASL. Sometimes when your email provider uses load-balancing and
not every mail server supports SASL you need to set both this setting and mail
. server . default . auth_login false. You could also use it to disable SMTP
AUTH. [3]

On http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=652927 they suggest
'Try changing entry security.default_personal_cert Time from Ask
Every Time to Select Automatically in about:config'.

Some users report that this solves their problem.

This gives me error -12195. I guess in my case TB tries to use one of my
certificates in the automatic selection

[Bug 366728] Re: LD_LIBRARY_PATH not loads from .profile

2009-05-08 Thread Zed
I have another system that has the same setup, except it was installed
with Wubi to 8.10, and then upgraded to 9.04. It is also 64 bit. I have
the same problem with this system.

I think this issue is important, because any programs installed in user
space, that uses shared libraries also installed in user space, will not
run from a gnome launcher or Alt-f2.

I prefer not to mix the binaries maintained by the package manager with
home brew apps and libs, and I prefer dynamic linking to static for my
apps.

[Bug 366728] Re: LD_LIBRARY_PATH not loads from .profile

2009-04-26 Thread Zed
Same problem. Upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 release. Not wubi installed.

~/.profile:
if [ -d $HOME/lib ] ; then
export LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/lib
fi

when logging in on tty1 LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set. In gnome it is not set.
Perhaps sourcing .profile in /etc/gdm/Xsession destroys it. Its the only place
I could find that the varible is set during gdm login.

[Bug 366728] Re: LD_LIBRARY_PATH not loads from .profile

2009-04-26 Thread Zed
Found a workaround (or perhaps solution):
Move the variable setting to ~./.bashrc:

~/.profile:
if [ -d $HOME/lib ] ; then
export LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/lib
fi

~/.bashrc:
if [ -d $HOME/lib ] ; then
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/lib
fi

sperlis said that LD_LIBRARY_PATH may be deleted for security reasons in
certain situations. Is this the case here?

Declaring variables in ~/.bashrc is less efficient according to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables:

However, performance-wise this may not be the best thing to do since it
will cause values to be unnecessarily set many times.

If LD_LIBRARY_PATH is blocked for security reasons it is not a bug.
There should however be more information on this.

[Bug 337377] [NEW] please restore netselect package: it's _not_ debian-specific

2009-03-03 Thread Zed Lopez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netselect

As described here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netselect/+bug/275280

the netselect package was removed in intrepid. The justification is
mistaken: while the netselect-apt package that depends upon netselect is
debian-specific and is better off omitted (if not entirely rewritten),
netselect itself is a general tool with nothing debian-specific about
it.

The problems that omitting it were meant to fix can be fixed entirely by
continuing to omit netselect-apt while putting netselect back in.

I think the wpasupplicant daemon needs to be restarted after waking from
 suspended mode.
I changed to the official drivers for my IBM Thinkpad R40 2722 GDG using
ndiswrapper since after the upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid I could no longer
 connect to encrypted APs.
I have only tried this solution once, and it worked. Before I have
sometimes managed to make it connect after suspend by first connecting to an
unencrypted AP, and then to the encrypted one.
To you think I should append

 invoke-rc.d wpa-ifupdown restart

 to

 /etc/acpi/resume.d/62-ifup.sh

 ?
 I may try that.

I tried it. Doesn't work.
What does work:
1. Disable wireless in network manager applet
2. stop wpa-ifupdown
3. start wpa-ifupdown
4. Enable wireless in network manager applet

  Version table:

In a default install the driver will be ath_pci, and connections to wpa access
points will time out. In Gutsy the default - whatever that was, worked fine.
My wireless now works with the following:

* Install ndisgtk and cabextract
* Download 77wc39ww.exe from
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovolndocid=MIGR-67214
* Put 77wc39ww.exe in an empty directory DIR
* In DIR, run cabextract 77wc39ww.exe
* Run ndisgtk from System-Administration-Windows Wireless Drivers
* Select the .inf file in DIR.
This is the state of my system. May not be necessary:
* Make sure that no linux-backports-modules-* packages are installed
* Make sure that there are no blacklists of any ath* modules in
/etc/modprobe.d/* (grep -r ath /etc/modprobe.d/*)
* Make sure the Atheros driver is enabled in System-Administration-Hardware
Drivers

Also, in gutsy I needed stronger signals from an ap to connect to it
than when I needed in Windows XP. Hopefully I will now enjoy the XP
performance in Intrepid since I have the Windows driver.

[Bug 284367] Re: Playback of video takes over screen

2008-11-01 Thread Zed Burnett
I don't believe this is a problem with your specific driver. There are
similar sounding comments in 289003, but the translation funny, I'm not
sure. I have this problem with video overlay overlapping everything
too. 8.10 started as beta, now fully updated. Using FGLRX current on
Radeon HD 3200. Looks to be a Totem issue, then.

[Bug 103505] Re: [apport] rapidsvn crashed with SIGSEGV in svn::Context::reset()

2008-10-16 Thread Zed
I have a similar problem.
After adding the backports to hardy, and updating, Rapidsvn will do
segmentation fault after I Update/Commit/Bookmark my http/ssl repository. If I
start Rapidsvn after this crash. It will crash with segmentation fault just by
marking the repository. No problem with the command line interface.

This happens both on my 686 and x86_64 systems, with the same repository

[Bug 280261] [NEW] Near obsolete Tor version offered in repository

2008-10-08 Thread zed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tor

The version of Tor offered via apt-get is outdated. The 0.1.2.x version
of Tor, whilst still supported, is no longer considered stable or
current, and the intention is to obsolete this branch in 4-6 months.
0.2.0.x versions should now be considered stable.

In addition, the version of Tor offered in the main repository is
outdated: there are some anonymity and security fixes between 0.1.2.17
and 0.1.2.19 though according to the author, Roger Dingledine.

In order for Intrepid Ibex to be considered stable, Tor needs to be
upgraded in the repository to 0.2.0.x.

Tor updates appear every couple of months or so.. it would be helpful if
the repository could stay up-to-date with these to minimize the window
of opportunity for any bugs to be exploited.

[Bug 222094] [NEW] integer type is defined as 64 bit on x86-64, but dgesv_ expects 32 bit

2008-04-25 Thread Zed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libf2c2

I try to run the function dgesv_ in lapack. It compiles, links and runs,
but the output is wrong.

In the lapack manual it says that it expects data of type integer array
(arguments of type integer *).
f2c.h defines integer as long int, which on x86-64 is 64 bit.

When I look at an integer array filled by dgesv_, it is clear that the
integers are 32 bit. When I change the definition of integer in f2c.h to
int, the function works.

Not sure if the error is in f2c.h, or in the lapack build.
I use liblapack3gf 3.1.1-0.3ubuntu2.

[Bug 215181] [NEW] Executes dangerous actions without confirmation

2008-04-10 Thread Zed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: aptitude

First I issue sudo aptitude full-upgrade. It wants to resolve some
dependencies by removing a bunch of packages. When asked if I want to do this I
enter 'n' as in no. If I issue the exact same command again, the same question
pops up, but this time it doesn't wait for my answer, but just starts to remove
my packages. The following is the output from the command the second time I
issue it. Note that my only interaction with the program is a ctrl-c when it
starts removing programs.
Another thing that probably isn't related to this bug is that a lot of
new-lines are inserted here and there in the output.

Re: [Bug 204164] Re: Dependency for nscd missing

2008-04-07 Thread Zed
I just connect my laptop to one of two standard wireless routers. I am not
aware of ever having installed anything that uses ldap or nis. I did have
both libldap2 and libldap-2.4-2 installed. I will remove the former one, and
also nscd, and see if it breaks network-manager.

[Bug 204164] [NEW] Dependency for nscd missing

2008-03-20 Thread Zed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I got this in syslog when I tried to connect to my wlan with WPA-PSK:

Mar 20 09:00:53 per-laptop NetworkManager: info Clearing nscd hosts
cache.

Mar 20 08:55:38 per-laptop NetworkManager: WARN  nm_spawn_process():
nm_spawn_process('/usr/sbin/nscd -i hosts'): could not spawn process.
(Failed to execute child process /usr/sbin/nscd (No such file or
directory))

I didn't get any connection.
I installed nscd and everything works.

[Bug 148727] yaird's Templates.cfg refer to /etc/console/boottime.kmap. In ubuntu, it's under /etc/console-setup

Yaird's cryptsetup and cryptsetup_luks templates within Templates.cfg
expect boottime.kmap.gz or boottime.kmap to be under /etc/console, but
it's under /etc/console-setup (this was also true in feisty.)

[Bug 148724] 1017_cryptsetup_blkid_test.patch results in failure with LVM2 within LUKS

2007-10-03 Thread Zed Lopez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yaird

I created a LUKS partition, /dev/mapper/cryptdisk,
used LVM2 to create a physical volume, volume group, and logical volume within
it, intending it to be an encrypted root partition. I used yaird to create a
boot image, and wrote it to /boot along with an appropriate GRUB entry. (I'm
skimming a complex procedure, but it's the same things that worked in feisty.)

On booting, the yaird image correctly reports loading my keyboard
settings, and prompts for the LUKS passphrase. On entry, it says:

Unable to identify the filesystem on volume cryptdisk.
Reenter, Ignore, Shell?

Looking at the source, I see that 1017_cryptsetup_blkid_test.patch
modifies the cryptosetup and cryptosetup_luks templates to run
/sbin/blkid on the encrypted device. If blkid's output is the empty
string, it concludes the luksOpen (in the LUKS case) failed.

I haven't tested yet whether this is an effect of the LVM2 partition
inside the LUKS, but on my working setup in feisty, blkid's output for
/dev/mapper/cryptdisk _is_ null. There's output for the logical volume
device under /dev/mapper, there's output for /dev/mapper/cryptoswap,
which has its own entry in /etc/crypttab, but none for cryptdisk.

** Affects: yaird (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 148698] Re: network interface numbers weirdness

2007-10-03 Thread Zed Lopez
I had a similar experience. The installer identified the wireless card
as eth0 and the wired network interface on the motherboard as eth1. But
on rebooting, I had no net access, as they had become eth2 and eth3.
Ifconfig made clear what was happening, so a change to
/etc/network/interfaces and an /etc/init.d/networking restart made for a
quick fix, but this would have stumped a newbie.

It'd be really nice if the installer created /etc/iftab entries for the
identified network interfaces' MAC addresses so this didn't come up,
though it's probably far too late for Gutsy.

What I have tried:
* from windows: reformat the USB key. Get it stopped from windows usb manager
and then unplugged.
* get Ubuntu boot and only then get the USB key plugged

What I noticed:
* gParted indicates the /dev/sde1 does not exist
* Sense Mode is always reported as 00 00 00 00. From there, SCSI errors
shows in the dmesg log.

Thanks to give me directives I have to follow to fix this or let me know
waht additional information are required here to get help.

[Bug 98955] Re: logd not running

2007-04-06 Thread Zed Lopez
My /var/log/boot contains only (Nothing has been logged yet.) and its
datestamp is from early last month, when I installed Feisty.

So I'm also experiencing logd apparently not running.

[Bug 63429] [Edgy] qemu-make-debian-root hasn't worked since Debian Sarge, and not even then

2006-10-01 Thread Zed Lopez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu

 0.8.2-0ubuntu1 installs /usr/sbin/qemu-make-debian-root, a script to
debootstrap a working Debian system into a disk image that can be used
in qemu. It fails first because of a reference to libsigc++-1.2-5c102, a
package that existed in Debian Sarge, but not Debian Sid or Etch, let
alone Ubuntu Edgy.

The script includes this line:

debootstrap
--exclude=syslinux,at,exim,mailx,libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2,mbr,setserial,fdutils,info,ipchains,iptables,lilo,pcmcia-cs,ppp,pppoe,ppp
oeconf,pppconfig,wget,telnet,cron,logrotate,exim4,exim4-base,exim4-config,exim4-daemon-light,pciutils,modconf,tasksel
 --include=aptitude,libsigc++-1.2-5c102 $DISTRO /tmp/mount.$$ $URL

That causes this failure when trying to build sid, etch or edgy:

E: Couldn't find these debs: libsigc++-1.2-5c102

I tried removing the --exclude and --include parameters from the
debootstrap, and also a subsequent dpkg-remove line that also caused
dependency problems. Then, with this invocation:

sudo qemu-make-debian-root 200 edgy http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
edgy

the debootstrap looked good, but the script concluded thus:

I: Configuring pcmciautils...
I: Configuring console-setup...
I: Configuring console-tools...
I: Configuring ubuntu-minimal...
I: Base system installed successfully.

(See fdisk(8).)
Done.

It did result in a file called edgy, but trying to use that in qemu resulted in
qemu hanging after saying Booting from Hard Disk...

Making a Debian Sid image (with an unmodified qemu-make-debian-root)
resulted in the same messages and result.

Finally, the script is written to create only the root user, and assigns
the password 'root', i.e., it results in an installation unlike any
conventional Ubuntu installation (though one could get the same results
with debootstrap.) Perhaps an appropriate Ubuntuization would be to
prompt for a login name and password, and to create an ordinary user in
sudoers.

[Bug 61487] Edgy Knot 3 i386 alternative install CD: requested Dvorak during server install, got QWERTY

2006-09-20 Thread Zed Lopez
Public bug reported:

Did a server install from the Edgy Knot 3 i386 alternative install CD.
Requested Dvorak. After installation, the active keymapping in the
console was QWERTY.

Requesting Dvorak during a text installation of Ubuntu from the Knot 3
i386 alternative CD works -- the keymapping is Dvorak both in Gnome and
in the virtual consoles.
