The boxes doesn't appear if using the driver installed by ubuntu when
discovering the printer. Supposedly a problem with the driver

if I run it with LC_ALL=C the bug isn't present

[Bug 362204] [NEW] gnome-language-selector don't let the user understand if he/she has modified something or not

2009-04-16 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

gnome-language-selector isn't clear for the user: the user doesn't
understand whether he/she has changed somnething or not. It lack a
button saying save new settings and a discard one.

Besides that, if I add a language with the button install/remove
languages..., it doesn't remember it: it asks me for my password, it
checks language availability, but apparently it doesn't install the
packages relative to the new language.

[Bug 361539] [NEW] update-manager can't continue if sources.list contains backports repositories

2009-04-15 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I had intrepid-backports repository in my sources.list

running update-manager -d while jaunty in beta.

When retrieving packages lists from repositories, update-manager
couldn't find jaunty-backports (supposedly because it isn't active yet),
and that prevented update-manager from going on.

I think those repositories should be disabled during update, at least
before release date.

[Bug 361554] [NEW] update-manager doesn't honor apt.conf Proxy setting

2009-04-15 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm using apt with apt-cache because I have various pc with the same
ubuntu, and I want to save bandwidth.

My apt.conf has only one line:

Acquire::http::Proxy http://paolo:3142/;;

it teaches apt to use the apt-cacher in paolo:

However, when I run update-manager -d to upgrade to jaunty beta, it
appears that packages are being downloaded from web servers, not from
apt-cacher proxy.

I think update-manager should honour apt.conf settings.

affects me too, both if I run it with sudo and if I run it remotely with

$ ssh -Yf paolo gnome-terminal

Notably the issue is only with gnome-terminal. All other applications
run well in both situations.

Also when local pc = intrepid, remote = jaunty : running gnome-terminal

[Bug 357678] [NEW] event time cannot be specified any more

2009-04-08 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since I updated to ubuntu jaunty beta, featuring gnome 2.26, I cannot manage my
events' time any more.

If I open en existing event that has its time specified, the time isn't showed
in the corresponding window field, and saving lets the event as an all-day-long
event.

If I add a new event, I have the same problem: I can generate only all-day-long
event. Trying to specify the time with the time drop down list results in the
time not been shown in the corresponding window element.

[Bug 356246] [NEW] clock applet and wheather applet: location names should be presented in default language, not in english

2009-04-06 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Jaunty beta.

The location name in the clock applet preferences are selected with an
auto completion list, which knows only english names of locations.

In wheather applet, there is a location list organized by country, but
there too names are in english.

In both applets my town is known as Genoa.

If in the clock applet I write Genova I won't ever find it. I was
entering Genova, and saving location name = result: no wheather.

It isn't possible that an italian user must know english in order to see
his/her town wheather.

The location list must be localized according to default language.

[Bug 323154] [NEW] software-properties-gtk should permit to upgrade only the packages that doesn't requiere reboot

2009-01-30 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-properties-gtk

I've set the automatic updates radio button to install security updates
without confirmation.

Now, after many automatic upgrades i find that my ubuntu system is to be
rebooted.

This is quite annoying me, because it leaves me back to the windows
days, when I had to reboot windows almost daily beacuse of freezes or
things not working well. Now, while my system is quite robust, I'm in
the same situation for a different reason. Reboot as soon as possible!

I intend that this reboot messages are mostly due to kernel security
fixes, but my system is a standalone one and I'm behind a robust router
and firewall, so that I'm not exposed to attacks, and so I'm not in the
need of installing all the security updates immediately.

I'd appreciate if update-manager gave me the possibility to upgrade only
those packages whose upgrade doesn't require a system reboot.

This perhaps could be accomplished very easily mantaining a file with
the list of patterns that expands to packages that need reboot when
upgraded.

One more automatic updates radio button would be required in software-
properties-gtk, saying: Install reboot-safe security updates without
confirmation, while the 1st option should become: install all security
updates without confirmation

[Bug 310583] [NEW] cannot download photos from camera

2008-12-22 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 8.10, when I connect my digital camera (Canon
PowerShot A530) something strange happens.

With 8.04 and all preceeding ubuntu versions, connecting the camera to
the usb port produced the activation of the program set in the
preferences for removable media - camera.

Now, on the contrary, besides that, the SD card inside the camera is
mounted too.

This way, when gnome-volume-manager-gthumb (I've set it in my removable
media - camera preferences) is called, it cannot see the photos.
gnome-volume-manager-gthumb says:

An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'):
Camera is already in use.

Actually the camera's card is mounted, and I can see the corresponding
icon in the desktop and in the disk mount applet too.

I think that the camera's card filesystem shouldn't be mounted if a
program is automatically launched when connecting the camera.

[Bug 306336] Re: crash in epiphany causes crash in download

It surprises me that the bug is being closed because it doesn't carry

As I was explaining above, the bug I submitted isn't about epiphany

causes of the crash, the dowloader dies.

[Bug 306336] [NEW] crash in epiphany causes crash in download

2008-12-08 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

I'm getting various crashes in epiphany, but this bug isn't about
epiphany crashing.

I was downloading a 148MB file from the web, with epiphany.

When the download was almost finished, epiphany crashed because of some
site, and so I lost the file I was downloading and I had to download it
again.

Solutions: either:

1. make the download window a separate application, so that a crash in
epiphany doesn't imply the crash in the download.

2. make the downloader capable of resuming the crashed download.

[Bug 305324] [NEW] boot process stops if fsck can't check file systems automatically

2008-12-04 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

During normal boot, you can have the boot process stopped because of
fsck finding an inconsitency during periodic file system checks.

I think it's a serious bug, because the normal user gets an english
message - many, many people in the world don't understand english - the
announces something ununderstandable for the non technical user.

I myself, althoug I am a quite technical person and I know quite
english, have difficulties to interpret the message appearing.

The normal joe ubuntu user gets a situation which he absolutely cannot
understand nor manage, and the only solution is to look for help from
some ubunty guy.

I think the boot process, or fsck, should be put in condition of
managing these situation.

If this doesn't happen, ubuntu seeks absolutely not newby- nor user-
friendly

[Bug 296282] [NEW] epiphany doesn't play any more real audio streams after upgrading to intrepid

2008-11-10 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

I've just updated to intrepid, but unfortunatly I can't listen any more
to real audio streams with epiphany.

Just click on the italian RAI last news link:

http://www.radio.rai.it/MediaRai/player.cfm?Q_CANALE=http://rntsmil.rai.it/ram/ultimogr1.ram

It worked in dapper, but it doesn't in intrepid it doesn't: the player
guy is show for some seconds, and after that the space of that guy gets
gray, and nothing is streamed.

I have realplayer installed

[Bug 294688] [NEW] dpkg doesn't detect disk full condition

2008-11-06 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

I was doing a cdromupgrade from hardy to intrepid, and I'm pretty sure I
had the necessary disk space (I got this piece of information running
do-release-upgrade).

However, when unpacking the new packages, the upgrade told me (in a
message window) that dpkg couldn't unpack some package. I can't remember
the exact message, but it wasn't a disk full message. I could see that
the problem was that issuing a df command.

So I manually deleted a number of files, collected some 400MB more disk
space, and closed the message window. This way the installation
continued smoothly.

I was disappointed by the fact that dpkg could not realize what was the
cause of the problem.

I suggest that dpkg check the disk full condition in case of problems.

Accidentaly, is it possible that the distribution upgrade app calculated
badly the necessary disk space?

[Bug 293328] [NEW] apt-cacher keeps downloading even if apt is stopped

2008-11-03 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-cacher

I have apt downloading through apt-cacher. Specifically, I have changed
sources.list, but apt.conf in order to use the apt-cacher proxy.

If I interrupt apt-get or aptitude, apt-cacher keeps downloading. I
think that apt-cacher should detect that its mother process has died and
die too.

Besides that, in the case apt-get or aptitude is interrupted, I cannot
restart apt-cacher:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/apt-cacher restart
[sudo] password for user:
Restarting Apt-Cacher: apt-cacherUnable to bind socket (port 3142), trying

[Bug 192483] [NEW] updatedb running when running ubuntu from the live cd

[Bug 192487] [NEW] strange copy behaviour in gnome-nettool

2008-02-16 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

In gnome-nettool, the edit-copy command and the ctl-c shortcut have a
strange behaviour: they copy to the clipboard the result of the network
test.

This produces inconsistecies, because if I select the network address in
the port scan tab, I expect that the copy command acts on the selection,
while it copies the result of the action. While ctl-x act actually on
the selection.

The thing is stranger if I consider that this ctl-c behaviour could have
a meaning in the case I have performed a test, but it has no meaning
when no test has been performed. At least in this case ctl-c should
actually copy the selection to the clipboard.

Anyway I consider this behaviour is confusing.

In order to copy the test result to the clipboard a separate command
should be offered.

Your signature suggests Italian but don suggests Spanish. Now I did
indeed find the -o --force option in the Spanish man pages. The
English and Italian man pages are OK, so it seems the man page
translations are not up to date.

I was reading the spanish man page, the english one is different, and it
seems nearer to the behaviour of the command.

Actually is a man page translation bug.

[Bug 138103] replacing ends of paragraph (regular expression) works also out of selection

2007-09-07 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

1. In a multi paragraph document, select some paragraph, but not all of
them. End the selection before the end of the last selected paragraph.

2. Menu: Edit - Find and replace

3. Set find=$, leave replace blank, then hit more options and select
regular expression (the actual selection checkbox is checked)

4. Hit the replace all button

[Bug 122172] printer paper size should be defined with locale settings

2007-06-25 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

openoffice.org always uses A4 paper in new document independently of the
locales used.

I think the paper size should go according to the uses of the country in
which I live, so that for example in european countries a A4 default
paper size is used, while in USA a letter default paper size is used.

Actually I live in Dominican Republic, where A4 paper doesn't exist, all
is letter size, and every time I create a new document in openoffice.org
I must change the paper size to letter.

I consider that in the locales or in the language pack the correct paper
size for every country should be defined too.

[Bug 111898] update-manager doesn't upgrade correctly edubuntu edgy server to feisty

2007-05-02 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I had to upgrade from edgy to feisty my edubuntu server.

At the end of the process I found that the package ltsp-server wasn't
upgraded: I had still edgy version.

Trying to apt-get dist-upgrade told be that ltsp-server had been
retained, supposedly because of a package that was to delete.

Looking for some reason of that, I remember that in the first beginning
of update-manager stuff, I had it donwloading something (it didn't say
what), and I could hit the escape key. I think I interrupted something,
but all continued apparently without problems. Without problems, but the
fact that ltsp-server wasn't upgraded to feisty.

I am not sure if the bug lies in the fact that ltsp-server hasn't been
upgraded, or, alternatively, in the fact that the upgrade has continued
notwithstanding a part of the process hasn't ended correctly
