I installed the newly-released kernel 2.6.23 and sound works nearly flawlessly (the only thing I've noticed is the internal speakers get disabled if you have headphones plugged in when resuming from suspend, and maybe if they're present at boot as well). I'm still trying out options to see if I can get the microphone to work. I added instructions to the wiki page for the kernel compile (not really anything special vs. any other kernel recompile other than making sure that the intel hda driver is selected during kernel config - which it should be if you're basing on the default ubuntu kernel configuration). [Bug 144663] OpenGL Screensavers Crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver My screensaver has been crashing intermittently. Sometimes the screen will flicker (as though changing video modes), then revert to the GDM login screen. Other times the display will freeze entirely, showing either a frozen image of the screensaver or a black screen with some white and blue patterns for the top inch or so (If it does it again I'll take a picture and post it). Once, I experienced a situation similar to bug #78449. I have timed the interval between locking and crash and it seems random. I think I have narrowed this down to the screensavers that use OpenGL - the really slick (rss-glx) family exhibits it most but I have also observed this in others such as hufo's tunnel. This appears to only happen when Compiz/Desktop Effects are running, but it is hard to say as it does not occur consistently - I will try leaving the screensaver running all night without desktop effects and report on the results. In all the latter two cases I am unable to switch to a virtual terminal to restart gdm, and am forced to do a hard reset (holding down the power button) This is happening on a Dell Vostro 1500 with Intel GMA 3100 (965 chipset - I know its blacklisted for video problems but openGL rendering should be separate from xv playback), although I have also experienced a similar situation on an intel 810 chipset. In the comments about bug #78449, I noticed a suggestion to manually set the amount of shared video ram in xorg.conf - is this a possible solution and if so what would be the recommended amount? ** Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- OpenGL Screensavers Crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144663 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 140833] Re: Gutsy compiz won't enable on intel 965 laptop after 9/18/07 updates
I've discovered another workaround, but it too requires a tradeoff. If you install the xserver-xgl package, video playback seems to work fine, and it also enables the water effects compiz plugin. [Bug 139761] Re: gnome startup problem with initialization
I can confirm this bug as well - after installing the updates this morning and restarting gsd no longer works. Running it in a terminal gives a similar error to Ryan's. I suspect that this may have something to do with the capplets update - some poking around online reveals that its updates have broken g-s-d before. This does not appear to be an issue with the kernel update - I tried with a previous version and got the same result. The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'. (Details: serial 1478 error_code 2 request_code 147 minor_code 35) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Any text I type does not appear, although the commands appear to be passed properly (if I type exit the window will close). Menu bars are visible but to not respond to clicking. The width of this window varies from a small square in the upper corner to a very short window that is wider than my screen. Often window borders do not display either. Disabling desktop effects does not have any effect. This problem first appeared after the set of updates released the evening of 9/17 - it was still working properly after the updates in the morning. This does not appear to be restricted to gnome- terminal - I launched the kde konsole program from gnome with the same result. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Terminal broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140607 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 138514] Media Keys activate backlight when lid closed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When I close the lid of my Dell Vostro 1500, the screen turns off as expected. However, if I press any of the media keys on the front of the computer (power up/down, play, stop, etc), the backlight comes back on and stays on, after the backlight on the media keys has turned off. If I open then close the lid of the laptop, the screen will once again turn off. Expected behavior: When I press a media key and the lid is closed, the media key backlight will turn on for a brief period of time, then turn off. The display backlight will remain off. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Tribe 5. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Media Keys activate backlight when lid closed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 136934] Suspend and hibernate not working
Public bug reported: I'm running gutsy tribe 5, and after a recent upgrade suspend and hibernate stopped working. Hibernate is gone from the logoff menu, and pressing the function key to hibernate results in an action forbidden message telling me that hibernation is not available. Suspend appears to work, but when I attempt to recover I get stuck at a black screen with a single white flashing underscore in the upper left corner. I have also attempted the suggestions in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=471855, using uswsusp. S2ram does not work. S2disk mostly works, but sound is disabled upon recovery. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Suspend and hibernate not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 136934] Re: Suspend and hibernate not working
This seems to be related to that bug, as editing prepare.sh allows restoring from suspend, although I still lose sound upon recovery (which may be related to #135246 and #125264). The lack of hibernate functionality seems to be related to bug #136433. So it appears that this report is a conglomeration of bugs, two of which (136453 and 136433) appear to have been fixed. I'll check the sound-related bugs and see if this is a duplicate of any of those. -- Suspend and hibernate not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 136887] Brightness hotkeys do not work properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I am using a dell Vostro 1500 running Gutsy Tribe 5. The power management correctly adjusts the brightness when I plug in and unplug the power, and the display responds properly when I change the brightness slider in gnome power management. But if I press the function-down hotkey, the brightness drops from 100% (or whatever it is set to in power management) to 30% (the second lowest), then to 0% on the second press. Pressing the up key repeatedly causes the brightness to change between 30% and 0%. Opening the power management preferences app causes the brightness to increase back to 100%. I am attaching lshal output, is anything else needed? ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Brightness hotkeys do not work properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136887 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 134525] Re: Plugging in headphones no longer turns off laptop speakers after updating to 2.6.22-10
I have downloaded all updates released to date, and I am still experiencing this bug on my Vostro 1500 with Sigmatel 9205. [Bug 73733] Re: Palm Sync Crashes with calendar conduit in Evolution
I'm experiencing a similar issue, only it doesn't actually crash. What happens is the palm will time out and throw a connection failed error, while the hotsync progress dialog on the computer continues indefinitely, stuck on synchronizing ECalendar. I have to do a killall gpilotd gpilot-control-applet gpilot-applet to restore hotsync functionality. As this is not an actual crash I don't think there's any debugging symbols, but this seems to be a related issue. I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and trying to synchronize a Handspring Visor Prism using the USB cradle. I've got the port set to usb:, but I've also tried running modprobe visor and setting it to ttyUSB0/1, with the same results. -- Palm Sync Crashes with calendar conduit in Evolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/73733 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
