Unfortunately, I am unable to tell at the moment as I have switched from
Gnome to KDE and am no longer using Evolution. If I get a chance I will
load up a liveCD and test whether this bug is still present. I apologize
for not being able to provide more information.

Gabriel: I did check that I wasn't booting into a different kernel.
uname -a still reported 2.6.23. I also tried booting 2.6.23 in recover
mode, and the bootup messages included something like hda audio: no
codecs loaded. I'll try recompiling again and see what dmesg says on
the first boot (when sound is working properly), but it has caused other
problems (I can't get Intel 3945 wireless drivers working) so I think
the backported alsa is probably a better solution for most people.

2007-10-10 Thread elyk
I installed the newly-released kernel 2.6.23 and sound works nearly flawlessly
(the only thing I've noticed is the internal speakers get disabled if you have
headphones plugged in when resuming from suspend, and maybe if they're present
at boot as well). I'm still trying out options to see if I can get the
microphone to work. I added instructions to the wiki page for the kernel
compile (not really anything special vs. any other kernel recompile other than
making sure that the intel hda driver is selected during kernel config - which
it should be if you're basing on the default ubuntu kernel configuration).
One note though if you do get sound working this way - don't install any
updates from ubuntu for kernel 2.6.22.14 - I let it do that and I had to
recompile cause it killed my sound again.

[Bug 144314] Re: Cannot change Focus Raise Behaviour general options

2007-10-08 Thread elyk
I can confirm this bug still exists. In the Shift Switcher plugin, I have been
unable to remove keyboard shortcuts. Also, when I try to disable unredirect
fullscreen windows, the box becomes checked again within a few seconds. This
occurs whether I actually uncheck the box or click the revert to defaults
button. In both cases I have been able to achieve the desired functionality by
directly modifying the settings in gconf, and the modified setting will show in
ccsm, but any changes made are one way. I have not noticed any unusual
highlighting however.
This is the same version of ccsm as the original report.

[Bug 148766] Re: Cannot disable or configure migration assistant

After performing a test installation, I found that ubiquity did not
actually migrate my windows user data. So it appears that the command

[Bug 147908] Re: No Direct Rendering after closing Compiz on Intel 965

2007-10-04 Thread elyk
It seemed to be related to compiz because the direct rendering: no
message was not appearing until after compiz was started then stopped
again. From your explanation, what seems to be happening is that compiz
switches the video over to AIGLX when it is started, but it is is not
restored to normal direct rendering once compiz is closed. Does AIGLX
provide equivalent performance to direct rendering?

[Bug 149252] Shift Switcher preview vanishes after a few seconds

2007-10-04 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-plugins

When I am activate the compiz shift plugin, the preview images only
display for a few seconds (usually until the initial animation
completes), then vanish. The bar at the bottom of the screen with the
window titles still shows and changes as I tab through the windows, but
the remainder of the screen is blank. This happens in both cover and

[Bug 140839] Re: Cannot increase display brightness with hotkeys

2007-09-28 Thread elyk
The workaround in: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
power-manager/+bug/121833/comments/11 allows both the hotkeys and the
software controls (brightness applet, gnome power manager) to work, but
it decreases the number of steps, and therefore the level of fine
control available via the hotkeys - it goes from high to low in four
presses as opposed to the seven or eight previously available with the
hotkeys and still available via the brightness applet.

[Bug 145010] Gnome Panel vanishes s when enabling Compiz plugins

2007-09-25 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When enabling certain plugins in CompizConfigSettingsManager (also known
as advanced desktop effects settings), the panels at the top and bottom
of the screen vanish and I must rotate the desktop cube by at least one
face or run killall gnome-panel to bring them back. This does not seem
to be restricted to a specific plugin - I have observed it enabling many
plugins, including glib, and inotify. Other times the panel will vanish
for a second, then return on its own, so perhaps the above is caused by
something interrupting the normal reloading of the panel. This is
running compiz 0.5.3, fully updated as of 9/25/2007.

[Bug 144663] OpenGL Screensavers Crash

2007-09-24 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

My screensaver has been crashing intermittently. Sometimes the screen will
flicker (as though changing video modes), then revert to the GDM login screen.
Other times the display will freeze entirely, showing either a frozen image of
the screensaver or a black screen with some white and blue patterns for the top
inch or so (If it does it again I'll take a picture and post it). Once, I
experienced a situation similar to bug #78449. I have timed the interval
between locking and crash and it seems random. I think I have narrowed this
down to the screensavers that use OpenGL - the really slick (rss-glx) family
exhibits it most but I have also observed this in others such as hufo's tunnel.
This appears to only happen when Compiz/Desktop Effects are running, but it is
hard to say as it does not occur consistently - I will try leaving the
screensaver running all night without desktop effects and report on the
results. In all the latter two cases I am unable to switch to a virtual
terminal to restart gdm, and am forced to do a hard reset (holding down the
power button)
This is happening on a Dell Vostro 1500 with Intel GMA 3100 (965 chipset - I
know its blacklisted for video problems but openGL rendering should be separate
from xv playback), although I have also experienced a similar situation on an
intel 810 chipset.
In the comments about bug #78449, I noticed a suggestion to manually set the
amount of shared video ram in xorg.conf - is this a possible solution and if so
what would be the recommended amount?

[Bug 141655] Kernel Upgrades kill sound

[Bug 141656] Re: internal speakers disabled if booted with headphones

2007-09-21 Thread elyk
I should add that this is on a dell Vostro 1500 with a Sigmatel 9205
sound card, which uses the snd-hda-intel module for sound playback. I
understand that there are already multiple bugs filed about the failure
to mute the internal speakers that I mention in the last clause - the
primary focus of the bug is the fact that the functionality of the
internal speakers is influenced by whether external speakers are plugged
in when the computer is booted.

[Bug 140833] Re: Gutsy compiz won't enable on intel 965 laptop after 9/18/07 updates

2007-09-20 Thread elyk
I've discovered another workaround, but it too requires a tradeoff. If
you install the xserver-xgl package, video playback seems to work fine,
and it also enables the water effects compiz plugin. However, I hear xgl
is slower on intel than aixgl, and it will crash if you attempt to run
any other direct rendering 3d program. So I guess we have to choose - 3d
graphics or regular video.

[Bug 140591] Re: Openoffice won't launch

2007-09-18 Thread elyk
odd - after waiting a couple hours I tried again and OOo launched
without a problem. I'll reboot and test it more and if it fails again
I'll post the output of the above command.

[Bug 140836] latest xserver-xorg-video-intel breaks desktop effects

2007-09-18 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After installing the 9/18/2007 update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, desktop
effects fail to start. Running compiz in a terminal gives the output:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2a02' found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

This is on a dell Vostro 1500. The video card is an Intel Graphics
Accelerator 3100, which I believe is the 965 chipset.

[Bug 140833] Re: Gutsy compiz won't enable on intel 965 laptop after 9/18/07 updates

2007-09-18 Thread elyk
I've got the same problem - I filed bug #140836 (which I guess is a
duplicate) about this before coming across yours (don't know why it
didn't show up when I searched). I hope that they fix this bug - even if
it causes problems with video compiz should not be disabled completely
as this is a major regression - perhaps a better option if it is causing
problems would be to turn it off by default but allow those of us who
are not using video playback at the moment to enable it.

[Bug 140839] Cannot increase display brightness with hotkeys

2007-09-18 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

I can no longer increase my screen brightness using the hotkeys.
Decreasing brightness works fine, but when I press fn+up the brightness
bar increases for a moment, then rapidly returns to its previous

brightness panel applet works fine to allow me to change brightness, as
does the power management config app. I began to notice this bug when I
installed the 9/18 set of updates, having previously updated the evening

[Bug 139761] Re: gnome startup problem with initialization

2007-09-17 Thread elyk
I can confirm this bug as well - after installing the updates this morning and
restarting gsd no longer works. Running it in a terminal gives a similar error
to Ryan's.
I suspect that this may have something to do with the capplets update - some
poking around online reveals that its updates have broken g-s-d before. This
does not appear to be an issue with the kernel update - I tried with a previous
version and got the same result.

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 1478 error_code 2 request_code 147 minor_code 35)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 140603] Upgrade breaks terminal

2007-09-17 Thread elyk
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 140540 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140540

Public bug reported:

After installing the most recent upgrades (evening of 9/17/07, with
everything working fine after a previous update this morning), the
terminal becomes nonfunctional. Commands still appear to work, but it
opens with an extremely wide (about 3/4 of the screen) fixed width that
cannot be decreased, and typed commands do not appear, nor does the
standard command prompt ([EMAIL PROTECTED] `currentfolder`).
Occasionally a flashing horizontal black line will appear near the top
of the screen. Menu bars display but are non-functional. Disabling
desktop effects does nothing to fix this.

[Bug 140607] Terminal broken

2007-09-17 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

When I open the terminal, I am presented with a blank white screen,
occasionally with a black flashing cursor. Any text I type does not
appear, although the commands appear to be passed properly (if I type
exit the window will close). Menu bars are visible but to not respond
to clicking. The width of this window varies from a small square in the
upper corner to a very short window that is wider than my screen. Often
window borders do not display either. Disabling desktop effects does not
have any effect. This problem first appeared after the set of updates
released the evening of 9/17 - it was still working properly after the
updates in the morning. This does not appear to be restricted to gnome-
terminal - I launched the kde konsole program from gnome with the same
result.

[Bug 138514] Media Keys activate backlight when lid closed

2007-09-09 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I close the lid of my Dell Vostro 1500, the screen turns off as expected.
However, if I press any of the media keys on the front of the computer (power
up/down, play, stop, etc), the backlight comes back on and stays on, after the
backlight on the media keys has turned off. If I open then close the lid of the
laptop, the screen will once again turn off.
Expected behavior: When I press a media key and the lid is closed, the media
key backlight will turn on for a brief period of time, then turn off. The
display backlight will remain off.
I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Tribe 5.

[Bug 136934] Suspend and hibernate not working

2007-09-03 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

I'm running gutsy tribe 5, and after a recent upgrade suspend and hibernate
stopped working. Hibernate is gone from the logoff menu, and pressing the
function key to hibernate results in an action forbidden message telling me
that hibernation is not available. Suspend appears to work, but when I attempt
to recover I get stuck at a black screen with a single white flashing
underscore in the upper left corner.
I have also attempted the suggestions in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=471855, using uswsusp. S2ram does not
work. S2disk mostly works, but sound is disabled upon recovery.

[Bug 136934] Re: Suspend and hibernate not working

2007-09-03 Thread elyk
This seems to be related to that bug, as editing prepare.sh allows
restoring from suspend, although I still lose sound upon recovery (which
may be related to #135246 and #125264). The lack of hibernate
functionality seems to be related to bug #136433. So it appears that
this report is a conglomeration of bugs, two of which (136453 and
136433) appear to have been fixed. I'll check the sound-related bugs and
see if this is a duplicate of any of those.

[Bug 136887] Brightness hotkeys do not work properly

2007-09-02 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I am using a dell Vostro 1500 running Gutsy Tribe 5. The power
management correctly adjusts the brightness when I plug in and unplug
the power, and the display responds properly when I change the
brightness slider in gnome power management. But if I press the
function-down hotkey, the brightness drops from 100% (or whatever it is
set to in power management) to 30% (the second lowest), then to 0% on
the second press. Pressing the up key repeatedly causes the brightness
to change between 30% and 0%. Opening the power management preferences
app causes the brightness to increase back to 100%. I am attaching lshal
output, is anything else needed?

[Bug 73733] Re: Palm Sync Crashes with calendar conduit in Evolution

2007-05-03 Thread elyk
I'm experiencing a similar issue, only it doesn't actually crash. What
happens is the palm will time out and throw a connection failed error,
while the hotsync progress dialog on the computer continues
indefinitely, stuck on synchronizing ECalendar. I have to do a killall
gpilotd gpilot-control-applet gpilot-applet to restore hotsync
functionality. As this is not an actual crash I don't think there's any
debugging symbols, but this seems to be a related issue. I'm running
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and trying to synchronize a Handspring Visor Prism
using the USB cradle. I've got the port set to usb:, but I've also tried
running modprobe visor and setting it to ttyUSB0/1, with the same
results.
