[Bug 274686] [NEW] apport fails to detect applications freezing

2008-09-26 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I have had 2 ongoing problems using Ubuntu 8.10 that apport never sees,
so that when I try to submit a bug, I am told that the bug application
is invalid.

1. Evolution freezes when I try to reply or type my own e-mail (as soon
as I press the space bar after the first word in the message window) -
in the terminal I get an indication that it does not recognise en-ZA as
a valid language. Apport does not react, presumably because I have to
manually kill Evolution, rather than a straight crash ?

2. Rhythmbox continually hiccups every couple of minutes and then within
the space of a 30 minutes to an hour it too freezes. Apport does not
react, presumably because I have to manually kill Evolution, rather than
a straight crash ?

I had the sound issue with Hardy too and am especially concerned that
this sound issue will continue into the final release of Intrepid.
Evolution is effectively unusable to me at the moment.

I would really love to fix the two issues, or at least be of use in
helping to do so via testing, as the rest of the Intrepid install is now
stable and fast.

I am running Intrepid 8.10 on a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 769 megs ram.

lspci gives:

[Bug 273031] Re: evolution crashes as soon as I start to type a message in email

2008-09-25 Thread gray
Hello

I have a problem - when Evolution freezes, necessitating a kill
command there is no resulting crash file in /var/crash relating to this,
nor does apport pick up the crash (yes I confirm that it is turned on,
as I have used it to submit crash reports recently).

I tried to get some info by starting the app from a terminal. I get
initially:

(evolution:6758): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment
with non-zero page size is deprecated

which is duplicated several times and then comes:

(evolution:6758): gtkhtml-editor-WARNING **: en-ZA: No such language

so I assume there is a locale issue, which would explain the problem
only occurring when I hit the space bar after the first word - I would
assume it is trying to spell-check the word, using the en-ZA locale
(South Africa), but doesn't recognise it and freezes in confusion.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6 with all updates as of 10 pm 25 sept on
a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 768 megs RAM.

Not sure if the above helps, but I do have to say that as it stands,
evolution is not useable as it stands right now.

hopefully the above might help a bit ?

[Bug 252174] Re: gvfsd-trash crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

2008-09-24 Thread gray
not sure if I should still submit this - but seeing as it happened when
I ran Update Manager, I reckon it is important to fix. Anyhow I fired up
Update Manager (had Rhythmbox going too) and then the error/crash window
popped up - this on a freshly installed Intrepid with every update I can
find. The updater completed it's checks and found nothing before I
reported this.

[Bug 273031] [NEW] evolution crashes as soon as I start to type a message in email

2008-09-22 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I start up a new message, insert email address, add subject line, and
then try to start typing in the message window, at which point evolution
closes without at error. As long as I don't typ in the message window
all seems fine - can recieve mail and read that, and I can click around
in the recieved mail message area with no issue.

I am able to save the message as a draft, after adding the email address
and subject line, but as soon as I start on the message, evolution
disappears.

I have just tried to forward a mail received, using the reply button on
a subject line in the list of recieved messages, and evolution closed
immediately. If I open the received message in a new window and hit
reply button, the window greys out and evolution stops responding.

I have managed to copy/paste the received mail into a text editor and
put it where XP can see it, in order to reply.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 and have just done all updates as of 10 am this
morning.

Evolution is 2.23.91 and the automatic crash reporter does not seem to
notice that evolution has crashed.

What I expect to happen: Evolution should not crash. At this point it is
unusable as I cannot respond to, nor send email.

[Bug 249340] [NEW] Gutsy-Hardy upgrade hangs in localedef

2008-07-17 Thread Nathaniel Gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: locales

I've been running Feisty for a while and decided to upgrade to Hardy. I
used the Update Manager to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy without problems
last night. Tonight I decided to take the next step from Gutsy to
Hardy. I again used the Update Manager GUI. But this time things
didn't go so well.

During the step Setting up locales (2.7.9-4) ... I get the following
message:

Generating locales...
  en_AU.UTF-8...

And then the installer hangs forever with localedef eating 100% CPU.

I'm not the only one. Here are the relevant threads on the forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=861384

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=861194

Interestingly enough, both threads were started *tonight* and there are
no relevant earlier threads matching localedef, which makes me suspect
this was due to a very recent change.

As a workaround, sudo killall locale-gen allows the installation to
continue, though several packages fail to install due to dependency
errors.

It appears that /usr/lib/locale has become a black hole. Doing ls
/usr/lib/locale/en_AU.utf8 results in a stuck process that cannot be
killed with kill -9. This is after the installer has finished (which
required killing locale-gen several times) but I have not rebooted at
all yet. (I'm afraid to.)

[Bug 249340] Re: Gutsy-Hardy upgrade hangs in localedef

2008-07-17 Thread Nathaniel Gray
Let's call it a workaround, it's surely not a fix. ;^) Also, it didn't
work for me, though I'd done quite a bit of other experimentation so my
system wasn't exactly fresh. In fact, after needing to use the magic
SysRq key to reboot a couple of times (I had an unkillable localedef
that prevented system shutdown) my filesystem is totally corrupted and
all data lost. Luckily the really important stuff was on other
partitions/drives.

I'm not so impressed with this release, guys.

Cool, so fixing bug 69155 would make this bug moot.

Why does the KDM package install files to /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions?

[Bug 68984] Re: no file /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions/ratpoison.desktop

2008-05-31 Thread Chet Gray
No, this is a bug in kdm. Window managers should put .desktop files for
their sessions in /usr/share/xsessions. kdm is responsible for
/usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions (or
/usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/kdm/sessions/ for kdm-kde4).

Of course, ratpoison doesn't install
/usr/share/xsessions/ratpoison.desktop, and that is a separate bug, upon
which this one sort of depends.

Moving this one to kdm.

[Bug 224624] Re: Package should depend on sbcl

2008-05-31 Thread Chet Gray
StumpWM doesn't technically need sbcl. It needs an implementation of
Common Lisp, and CLX (the Common Lisp X interface, basically Xlib for
Common Lisp).

The stumpwm package Depends on common-lisp-controller, which helps with
making sure there's a CL compiler, and cl-clx-sbcl | cmucl-source |
clisp, which are the packages that contain CLX for three different CL
implementations, sbcl, cmucl, and clisp, respectively.

However, common-lisp-controller just Suggests sbcl, and cl-clx-sbcl just
Recommends sbcl, which is why your situation is happening.

Perhaps stumpwm should Depend on lisp-compiler, a virtual package
Provided by sbcl, cmucl, and clisp.

;;
clisp)
clisp -x $EVAL_LOAD $EVAL_RUN
;;
*)
echo Unkown Common Lisp implementation.

As StumpWM only works with cmucl, sbcl, and clisp, it really shouldn't

[Bug 44404] Re: Smarty in php.ini Include

2008-05-12 Thread C. Addison Gray
I'm using a separate ini file in /etc/php5/conf.d/ to accomplish this.

/etc/php5/conf.d/smarty.ini:

include_path = ${include_path} :/usr/share/php/Smarty

That's all.

Of course, the ${variable} syntax in PHP configuration files has
apparently only been possible since PHP 5.1.0 (see

says it's fine with php4.

Re: [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-05-08 Thread gray

Hello Anton

I have to say that the answer was **definitely** setting up sound to use alsa
only - as soon as I did this all issues vanished - oh and as a bonus,
audacity (set up to use alsa) worked too - I am at present running Mandriva
One, and I have done the same here specifically to use audacity in this case,
as the crashing never showed here (but the inability of audacity to use pulse
audio was identical) - I assume the variation of pulse audio is different ?

If you really need me to check this I am willing to wipe Mandriva and
re-install Ubuntu to help - but ideally only if you have need of my info.

Please let me know if this is needed.

cheers, and thanks for coming back to me.

2008-05-08 Thread gray

Hello Anton

I went to the link supplied, and no the bug is not the same - the only issue I
had (asides from audacity not function with pulse) is that I would be playing
sounds off the hard drive for a while and suddenly all would be quiet - the
rhythmbox would be nonresponsive - I would kill it, but still no sounds in
any way, not at all. Only a full reboot would bring sound back. No other
aspect of the system was affected - mouse, keyboard and all other non-media
apps were fine.

thanks

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-23 Thread gray
OK back again

I did all the updates released 22 april on a system that is still a
default - no new apps added (apart from Bluefish, which should have no
impact on a sound app in any case), and only the recommended codecs as
suggested by the system to play my files (Gstreamers) .

I trashed all mp3 files in my music folder, leaving only ogg files,
restarted Rhythmbox and within 10 minutes Rhythmbox had frozen, once
again, all sound is locked and cannot play movie files. All other apps
seem unaffected however.

Just for the record, I usually use Amarok, or before that xmms, and have
never experienced this constant freeze before. The mp3 files and ogg
files are ones that I listen to often, whatever system I use. What makes
it even more frustrating is the otherwise total stability of the rest of
my applications !

Thanks for your time and hard work :)

Just a thought - the freeze occurred on an mp3 file - and it does not
seem to matter which mp3 file - I have restarted the process further
down the list to see if that too will cause a freeze on some arbitrary

more stable than the gstreamer ?

merely means that rkhunter has found a non-standard file - at least as
far as rkhunter is concerned - but which is a default install for Hardy
Heron. In this case I would assume that rkhunter needs to be updated ?

I am using the release candidate of Hardy Heron - installed in free
space at the end of my single hard drive, dual booting with winxp. The
install is a standard setup (no fancy partitions), with all updates,
plus quanta, dvdrip, amarok and k3b with all required libs and apps for
these additions. The only changes I have made via the console have been
to place winxp first in the grub menu, enable ufw (with default deny)
and to make sudo timeout to be zero.

What I would have expected to happen is no warnings - seeing as this is
a clean, new install, done last night and only surfing to known safe
websites, and the limited installation done thus far

[Bug 219848] [NEW] rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The title says it all really - I play from local files - mp3 and ogg -
in my /home/user/Music directory created by a default install of Hardy
Heron using free space at the end of my hard drive - dual booting with
winxp.

I run evolution, firefox and rhythmbox and sit here surfing, or go and
do household chores etc - shortly after an hour all sound stops as
rhythmbox freezes. I quit rhythmbox, via right-click on taskbar button
for rhythmbox and close, and then say yes to quit program not
responding. After that all sound apps, such as movie players cannot play
sound, tho the movie is showing fine. A reboot gets my sound back. The
install is standard, with the addition of the following apps (they were
installed AFTER that freezing - Amarok was installed specifically to see
if it too would do the same): amarok, K3b, dvdrip, quanta and all
required deps and apps for these programs. The codecs to play mp3 were
chosen by Totem before I started Rhythmbox just after the fresh install.

Amarok has been playing for 3 and a half hours thus far - one or 2
momentary skips in play, but no freeze and system more responsive than
with amarok (as in when minimise and maximise apps)

What I would expect to happen - continual playback for several years if
need be !

System here: Ubuntu 8.04 with all updates as of 2 hours ago - 768 megs
ram on a Intel Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Hello

I have just wiped the previous installation and redone a clean one, with
no change to default that might impact on the rhythmbox player in any
way. All the music files I have in /home/user/Music are now purely ogg
files, so no new codecs required (thereby canceling out that variable) -
all updates have been applied. The only added extra is the nvidia
module. The only console changes are the usual reduction in timeout of
sudoers file and the re-arrangement of the grub list to put XP first.

Now I just have to see if this will still freeze, or not.

Thanks for your time

[Bug 131389] Re: grub should silently succeed

Hello

I far prefer **not** having that short, rather scruffy font telling me
that grub is loading - I have tried out several other distros and thus
far only debian and the ubuntu-based distros do this - it just looks
amateurish. Possibly there might be an option in grub where one could
turn that off ? Surely by now grub is sufficiently stable and reliable
to not need it?

[Bug 112484] Re: audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped

2008-04-20 Thread gray
I have even got a skip when merely minimising or maximising another app
- for example my typical session would include rhythmbox, evolution,
pidgin and firefox - I have not yet fiddled with any of the services as
yet - to improve matters, but in any case this is a reasonably
responsive system in XP (pentium 4 2.66 Ghz cpu with 768 megs ram with
an FX550 nvidia graphics card) - granted not fancy, but not a dog.

This is a totally fresh stock standard install, plus all updates of the
Hardy release candidate - only one thing has been added - the nvidia
module so I don't have to reset the monitor when I boot between Winxp
and Ubuntu. The sound files are pure ogg so no new codecs have been
added either.

I really think the buffer size could be increased, or allow the user to
increase it in the settings someplace.

[Bug 112484] Re: audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped

2008-04-20 Thread gray
OK I have removed the following services from startup:

Bluetooth device management
CPU frequency management
Power management - apmd (acpid is left on)
Printer service

and then from the user's session options I removed:
Bluetooth manager
Evolution alarm notifier
Network manager applet
Power manager
Print queue applet
Tracker
Tracker applet

the result has been that I can minimise and maximise frantically - with
no skipping.

the snag I have here is that while I personally don't need these
services, a laptop user might, or an office worker - so there does need
to be some way to allow rhythmbox to be more forgiving.

thanks for the hard work !

[Bug 219533] [NEW] watch my library for new files creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Under edit/preferences/music there is the option to Watch my library
for new files. When this is ticked, I immediately get an Import Error
in the left side pane, as it tries to re-import the files again.

I had previously imported my files via the Music/Import Folder drop-down menu,
then closed Rhythmbox.
This happens every time I try this.

The only way to prevent the issue at the moment for me is to untick the
Watch my library for new files option.

I am using the new release candidate for Ubuntu 8.04 - available on 18
April 2008 plus all updates.

The app is Rhythmbox 0.11.5

Ideal behaviour would have been for nothing to happen until I add new
music, at which point it should get added to the collection found under
Music in the left hand pane - I have not set up any lists of mine own as
yet

Re: [Bug 219533] Re: watch my library for new files creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Hello Thomas

The library is part and parcel of a default Ubuntu install. I copied the files
from my WinXP
partition to my Music Folder in /home/user - so they are sitting in a ext3 file
system, I would
assume - I specifically did a default install into free space on my drive for
testing purposes - The
only apps I have added thus far have been dvdrip, with requires deps for that.

Thanks for all the hard work you guys do !

[Bug 80383] Re: Edgy, rhythmbox freeze when playing mp3 for a long time.

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Hi

I am running the new release candidate of Ubuntu 8.04 and Rhythmbox does
the same as above - after an hour or two it freezes - I am able to kill
the app, simply by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing close, and
then saying to the pop-up window asking if I want to stop the app which
is not responding - however after that I cannot play any further sound
of any sort, even in a movie in Totem - it would appear that the sound
system becomes totally locked - I have to reboot to cure this - and
after a reboot Rhythmbox plays as before the freeze.

Please note the files are in my home directory, as created by Ubunu
during the install process, this is a default install of Ubuntu 8.04,
plus all updates as of an hour back. I am running Ubuntu in a dual-boot
with WinXP on a 200 gig drive - Ubuntu is on the last 40 gig space,
which was unused prior to install of Ubuntu.

App is Rhythmbox 0.11.5

The codecs are ones suggested by Totem, prior to starting Rhythmbox - 2
Gstreamer packages, allowing mp3 and avi support

The other applications are not affected, barring the fact that I need to
restart to regain access to sound.

If there is any further info you need please let me know.

I am wondering if I should install Amarok to see if it happens with that
too - which would then point to the sound system rather than Rhythmbox ?

Thanks

Gray

[Bug 213785] [NEW] Haskell nested block comments parsed incorrectly

2008-04-08 Thread C. Addison Gray
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu hardy (development branch) 8.04
Package: libgtksourceview2.0-common
Package version: 2.2.0-2

Haskell block comments can be nested correctly, unlike C block comments.
A block comment inside another block comment should not prematurely
close the outer block comment. However, GtkSourceView parses this
incorrectly and treats nested comments as with C block comments, with
the first closing comment marker reached closing all previously opened
block comment levels, regardless of nesting depth.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start an application using GtkSourceView, e.g. gedit
2) Set language to Haskell (haskell.lang). In gedit, View Highlight Mode
Sources Haskell
3) Type an opening block comment marker {-. Text color changes to indicate a
comment.
4) Type another opening block comment marker to nest a second block comment.
Text color still indicates a comment.
5) Type a closing block comment marker to close the inner nested block comment.
6) Type some comment text.
7) Type another closing block comment marker to close the outer block comment.
Expected: The second closing block comment marker and the text before it should
be colored to indicate a comment.
Actual: They are colored as normal text.

[Bug 148291] Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.

2007-10-02 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

After upgrade from feisty to gutsy and reboot i get desktop without theme (with
simple theme) and without volume control applet.
When i try to launch gnome-appearance-properties i got error:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take
effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings
manager.

And theme changes does not affect desktop.
I got the same error when i trying to launch other programs from Preferences
menu.
gnome-settings-daemon seems to be launched.

[Bug 106565] Re: Boot interrupted after feisty upgrade--gives a command prompt for no apparent reason

2007-05-15 Thread matt gray
I had a similiar problem on upgrading to Feisty. I would get an error
similiar to this: fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to
open /dev/.tmp-254-3 and the control-D to continue message, but after
the boot process the partitions would mount correctly and appeared error
free. in /var/log/fsck/checkfs the log would confirm this error message.

after looking around a bit on the internet, i found this post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-25938.html

it seems this might be related to udev

here's the salient quote from that link : I had a problem a little
like this. There is a known problem regarding timing of events at boot
and udev devices not being created quickly enough. I got round it by
adding a 5 second sleep at the beginning of the fsck script in
/etc/init.d

So I added the line sleep 5 after the initial comments in
/etc/init.d/checkfs.sh , and everything seems to work OK since then. I
haven't had the message at all. /var/log/fsck/checkfs confirms that the
file systems have all been fully checked.

clicked on the install icon, and nothing (visible) happened, not even
the visual working on it non-hourglass indicator.

So I restarted and tried to reproduce the problem without doing the
update. I was successful, so is the debug data I failed to include the
first time:

Re: [Bug 79509] Re: Installer crashed (partitioner)

2007-01-16 Thread Terry Gray
Sorry... It said to include more details if it was a new report, but
by then I could see that the problem had been reported several times
already.

Also, it would be a heck of lot easier to include the displayed debug
info if you could copy/paste the trace/debug info in the usual way.
It tricks you into thinking you can select the text, but Ctl-C doesn't
copy it to the clipboard.

OK, you must give more information... the installer is mentioning some

I'm not a 'noob', but, how do I find the USB id of the XTi?

[Bug 66223] Wrong usage of infitive case instead of imperative case in verbs - almost everywhere!

2006-10-15 Thread Simon Gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-pack-gnome-eo

The infinitive case is the root case of a verb. Examples:

To be
To walk
To click

Because native English speakers' imperative case (when you order the
application to do something) is identical to the infinitive case it is
wrongly used in many places in the Esperanto translation. Take for
example the menu bar in Gedit:

Redakti, Vidi, Sercxi etc.

which should be:

Redaktu, Vidu, Sercxu, etc.

And even then, English-speaking people can say that to save (as in:
click here to save the document) is a fitting text for a save button,
but this is also the product of English grammar. Other languages don't
neccessarilly use a word like to as an article in the infinitive case.

It is like having all buttons and menu options written in a wrong tense:

Saving, Loaded, Cancelling, Searched

I have no idea where to go to help correct this, so I am writing this
bug report instead. Hopefully this will be read by someone who will know
what to do about it.

[Bug 63473] Can't Import Photos from Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

2006-10-01 Thread Chris Gray
Public bug reported:

I just purchased the new Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. The default
configuration of Ubuntu Dapper (and Ubuntu Edgy on my test box) see that
the camera is attached and that there are pictures on the camera.
However, the system reports this error when 'Import' is started:

An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'):
Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no
other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is
using the device and you have read/write access to the device.

I have tried rebooting and alternately using Picasa for Linux, F-Stop,
and other packages to no avail.

[Bug 54058] /usr/bin/uuidgen in e2fsprogs, not in libuuid1

2006-07-25 Thread Toby Gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libuuid1

Any packages like libvolumeid0 (see below) that depend on libuuid1 for
/usr/bin/uuidgen will fail to install if e2fsprogs is not installed
because uuidgen is really in e2fsprogs, not libuuid1. Obviously these
packages should depend on e2fsprogs instead and presumably e2fsprogs in
turn depends on libuuid1.

Example of apt-get output follows

Setting up libvolumeid0 (093-0ubuntu5) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libvolumeid0.postinst: 158: uuidgen: not found
dpkg: error processing libvolumeid0 (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127
