[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2019-01-21 Thread jeremy-list
I am using btrfs for both / and /home. I was originally using it only
for /home (and ext4 on /); but force-resetting due to this bug would
occasionally render my system unbootable.

[Bug 1775540] [NEW] Intermittent ipv4 connectivity on bionic beaver

2018-06-07 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:

Connect to a wifi network (wired untested). The problem occurs most
consistently for DHCP configured connections but is also a significant
problem for manually configured connection.

Expected results:

IPv4 and IPv6 should both auto-configure correctly and be usable: as
they were in previous versions of Ubuntu, and still are on other devices
and operating systems.

Actual results:

IPv6 is automatically configured correctly and I have no difficulty
using IPv6 services. Most of the time no IPv4 address is configured.
Manually configuring an IPv4 address is possible but usually does not
result in a working IPv4 connection (pinging the gateway gives
"destination host unreachable")

[Bug 1731563] [NEW] No option to wite to DVD-RW or CD-R

2017-11-10 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
Method one: in Nautilus: right-click an iso file and select "Open with Disk
Image Writer"
Method two: in the Disk utility: select the blank disk and find "Restore disk
image" in the menu

Expected results:
If there is a blank disk in the drive: either method should be able to write an
image to the disk.

Actual results:
Following method one: the blank disk will appear greyed out in the list of
write destinations. Following method two: the "Restore disk image" option will
be greyed out.

Confirmed with multiple blank disks: both CD-R and DVD-RW. Issue is not
hardware, drivers, or blank media: K3B is able to burn disks correctly.

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-11-02 Thread jeremy-list
Once it has happened there is no way to check RAM usage because
keyboard, mouse, and network devices all become completely unresponsive.
I have 3.8 GiB of RAM installed. On the occasions when I have checked
RAM usage shortly before it happened: total RAM usage was 3.8GiB. I have
19.1GiB of swap space enabled, but this problem will happen when swap
usage is still around 10MiB.

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-10-11 Thread jeremy-list
My computer cannot boot the v4.14-rc4 kernel because the amd64 package is a
failed build and my motherboard does not support 32 bit operating systems.
Running the v4.14rc3 mainline kernel I was unable to connect to the internet,
(so could not get firefox to use enough memory to reproduce the bug), but the
attached C++ program made my computer become completely unresponsive in under a
second.

[Bug 1722778] [NEW] System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-10-11 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:

Run firefox for a couple of hours.

Expected results:

All open applications should run normally: occasional slowdown for page
faults are tolerable but the observed behaviour is not.

Actual results:

Several times per day my computer will become completely unresponsive
apart from high hard disk activity. Once it enters this state: it will
not recover without a hard reset regardless of any time waited or input
given. On one occasion I have tested it by leaving it thrashing for 12
hours, at the end of which there was no evidence of progress.

This behaviour was not observed when running Ubuntu 16.04 on the same
computer and swap settings.

[Bug 1707543] [NEW] Wi-Fi connection silently disconnects, requires manual reconnection

2017-07-30 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
Attempt to use a secured Wi-Fi access point continuously.

Expected results:
The network interface should remain usable as long as possible, and
automatically attempt to reconnect when disconnected.

Observed results:
The network will remain connected for a while, then stop sending or receiving
packets. If gnome system monitor is running at the moment when the connection
stops working, it will become unresponsive for about 30 seconds. Network
manager will continue to report the interface as connected, but it will not
accept traffic in either direction. Using the network manager gnome applet to
reconnect will make the network usable again for a while (between two seconds
and three hours, somewhat random but the average time decreasing until reboot)

[Bug 1706479] [NEW] Wrong input method is activated when using "Previous method" keyboard to switch.

2017-07-25 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1. In the IBus configuration: add the following input methods to the list:
  1. US English
  2. Libpinyin or Pinyin (bug present for both)
  3. Russian
2. Make sure there are keyboard shortcuts for cycling between input methods
3. In another application: press the keyboard shortcut for "previous input
method" until the status bar icon shows the pinyin input method
4. Type something.

Expected results:
There should be a character selection box allowing the user to select Chinese
characters.

Actual results:
Cyrillic characters appear on the screen.

NB: I can only reproduce the bug if I use the "Previous method"
shortcut. If using the "Next method" shortcut I get the correct
behaviour.

[Bug 1706286] [NEW] Gnome System Monitor freezes when wi-fi is reconnecting

2017-07-25 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1. Use network manager to connect to a poor quality Wi-Fi router (signal
strength is irrelevant: the router itself must be low quality).
2. After a short period of time: the connection will stall and require manual
reconnection. Use the network manager gnome applet to select the "connected"
Wi-Fi again.

Observed results:
Gnome System Monitor becomes unresponsive until the Wi-Fi is connected again.

Expected results:
Apart from the network usage graph: Gnome System Monitor should not be affected
by changing network connections.

[Bug 1704612] [NEW] Touchpad is treated as wacom tablet after upgrade to 16.10

2017-07-15 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10: the mouse cursor movements became
absolute (similar to Wacom tablets, but unable to reach the edges or
corners of the screen), rather than relative to where my finger was
initially placed on the touchpad. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 310, but
https://askubuntu.com/questions/865690/ describes the same issue
happening on a Dell laptop.

Manually installing xserver-xorg-input-all resolved the issue, which
indicates that the decision to switch to xserver-xorg-hwe by default was
severely premature.

but I have several other files with Chinese ID3 tags which are correctly

[Bug 1698040] [NEW] Inappropriate wi-fi password confirmation requests and related memory leak

2017-06-14 Thread jeremy-list
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

To replicate:
1: Connect to a Wi-Fi network with 75% signal strength or less

Expected results:
Network Manager should remain connected as much as possible, and automatically
reconnect when necessary.

Actual results:
The Wi-Fi password confirmation dialog is repeatedly shown even when the Wi-Fi
password has not changed. The memory-consumption of nm-applet increases each
time, often up to 200MB over the course of 8 hours.

[Bug 1698037] [NEW] Failed page loads sometimes redirect to about:blank instead of displaying errors

2017-06-14 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: Use Firefox with an unstable internet connection
2: Right-click a link and select "Open Link in New Tab" (the bug also occurs
when navigating the current tab to a new page, but much less frequently)

Expected results:
The new tab should always contain one of the following:
1: The new page, to the extent it has loaded
2: An error message with a "retry" button

Actual results:
Sometimes instead of the error message: the tab will redirect to about:blank.
This includes the address bar, so the only way to try again is to close the tab
and try again from the initial page.

[Bug 1322435] [NEW] hp2ps produces unescaped backslashes for nested functions

2014-05-22 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

I believe this is the same bug as this:
https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/5800

The bug report there says it's fixed already, but I seem to be getting
the same behaviour on the version of hp2ps in the latest ubuntu package.
I'm enclosing a file that produces this bug on my computer in case
something else is going wrong, but I highly suspect the fix just hasn't
been merged yet.

[Bug 1312695] [NEW] laptop suspends if lid closed during shutdown

2014-04-25 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: Run laptop on battery power, adjust settings so that laptop suspends if lid
is closed on battery power.
2: Start to shut down the computer
3: Close the laptop lid at any time before the laptop has finished shutting
down.

What should happen:
The laptop should finish shutting down. The shutdown command should override
the suspend setting.

What actually happens:
The laptop suspends in the middle of shutting down, so when I want to use it
again I have to wait for it to finish shutting down before booting it again.

[Bug 1291895] [NEW] ibus input candidates window is sometimes outside screen bounds

2014-03-13 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: Open any window which accepts text entry from ibus.
2: Maximize the window or place it so that the bottom of the screen
3: Make sure the cursor is at the bottom of the screen, such as by pressing
return until the cursor reaches the bottom
4: Using the input menu or the shortcut key: select an input method which uses
the candidates window
5: Type something

The result:
The edge of the candidates window is visible, but it is not usable because
almost all of the window is off-screen. The handle for moving the candidates
window is also off-screen, so it cannot be manually shifted to a place where it
is visible. Refer to the screenshot attached.

What should happen instead:
If there is not enough space for the candidates window to be completely visible
below the cursor, it should be shown above the cursor instead.

[Bug 1240912] [NEW] ssh produces superfluous key mismatch warning when network uses DHCP

2013-10-17 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: In terminal type:
ssh user@host1.local
2: Type yes to add certificate to known hosts.
3: Exit ssh
4: In terminal type:
   ssh user@host2.local
5: Type yes, confirm certificate again.
6: Shut down all computers on the network, wait until the router's DHCP cache
has cleared, start up computers in such an order that host1.local and
host2.local have each others' IP addresses when compared to before shutting
down.
7: In terminal type:
   ssh user@host1.local

What should happen:
ssh should accept the certificate automatically because it's the correct
certificate for host1.local

[Bug 1230194] Re: apache2 basic authentication rejects password

2013-09-27 Thread jeremy-list
I didn't have time to test again last time I was near the computer I first
noticed this problem on, but I get the same issue on my laptop webserver
(running the i386 version instead of x64, and without ssl enabled but otherwise
an identical fresh install with no configuration changes except what I
mentioned in the original report).
The issue affects firefox but not konqueror or google chrome.
I have no trouble with firefox logging into my router's admin page, which also
uses basic http authentication, so it's looking like this problem requires both
firefox and the apache's basic authentication module in order to show up
(possibly even restricted to firefox 24.0 - I don't have another version of
firefox handy).
The attachment contains the logs, cleared before testing on the 3 browsers.

[Bug 1230194] [NEW] apache2 basic authentication rejects password

2013-09-25 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: Create htpasswd file using sudo htpasswd /etc/apache2/passwd jeremy
2: Enter the same password twice
3: Insert the following into /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default-ssl:
Directory /var/www/git
AuthType Basic
AuthName Git authorization required
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/passwd
Require valid-user
/Directory

4: Restart apache
5: Open firefox and enter https://localhost/git; in the location bar, press
enter.
6: Enter the jeremy as the username and enter the same password you entered
into htpasswd.
7: chown /etc/apache2/passwd to www-data:www-data and try again

What I expected to happen: Apache should accept the password because it's the
exact same one I typed into htpasswd
What happened instead: Firefox repeatedly asked me for the password and went to
a 401 error page when I pressed cancel.

[Bug 1230194] Re: apache2 basic authentication rejects password

2013-09-25 Thread jeremy-list
If I do that it just makes Apache crash completely when I try to access the
page. Which is not surprising because /etc/passwd is not in a format that
Apache understands and doesn't even contain the hashed passwords
Please refer to the Apache documentation: it's possible I've made some kind of
configuration error but using AuthUserFile /etc/passwd is clearly not going
to work.

[Bug 1225321] [NEW] Add-on remains enabled after the disable button is pressed

2013-09-14 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1: In Firefox, open Tools-Add-ons-extensions
2: Press the Disable button on one of the add-ons
3: Click Restart now when it appears
What I expect to happen:
Firefox should restart with the add-on disabled
What happens instead:
Firefox restarts but the add-on is still not disabled. If I open the Add-ons
manager again it still says add-on name will be disabled after you restart
Firefox with 2 links saying Restart now and Undo. No ammount of restarting
will actually disable the add-on.

[Bug 1224865] [NEW] Flash plugin is not detected by firefox

2013-09-13 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

This is a re-occurrence of bug #41442. Flash was actually working for me

[Bug 1217392] [NEW] Evolution does not automatically decrypt emails sent using the RFC 3156 standard

2013-08-27 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate: have someone send you an email encrypted with gpg using the RFC
3156 standard. An example mbox file is attached.
What I expect to happen: Evolution should prompt me for my private key
passphrase and display the contents of the encrypted section inline.
What happened instead: The encrypted section was displayed as an attachment and
I had to save and decrypt it manually.

[Bug 1217647] [NEW] Trash launcher icon expects trash folder in different location from any file manager

2013-08-27 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
Click the trash icon on the bottom of the Unity launcher
What I expect to happen: Nautilus should open to trash://
What happens instead: There is an error message saying Failed to open Trash.
Error getting information for /home/jeremy/trash, no such file or directory
Why I don't just create /home/jeremy/trash: Because nautilus will just ignore
it and continue putting things I plan to delete into

directory in my $HOME

[Bug 1216816] [NEW] Online accounts settings cannot edit or remove accounts

2013-08-26 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

I have a couple of unusable accounts which I cannot use, edit, or
delete. When I try to edit them, it just says Go online to edit your
personal information. Unfortunately the whole reason I want to edit the
account is because it can't go online. When I try to delete and start
again, I click the Remove Account button, and a window comes up saying
Are you sure that you wish to remove this Ubuntu Web Account?. Then I
click Remove and the following message is written to stderr but
nothing else happens:

[Bug 1031587] [NEW] Libneon-gnutls detects key usage violation when none exists

2012-07-31 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

When trying to connect to an svn server over https: the result is always this
error:
OPTIONS of 'url': SSL handshake failed: SSL error: Key usage violation in
certificate has been detected. (url)

Replacing /usr/lib/libneon-gnutls.so.27 with a symbolic link to a
working version of libneon temorarily resolves this issue. Bearing in
mind the prevalence of this bug when connecting to a variety of servers:
it is more likely that the ssl validation in gnutls is broken than any
real issue with the server.

[Bug 1029274] [NEW] close toolbar leaves blank space

2012-07-26 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate in libreoffice word:
1: Press ctrl-f or select find in the edit menu
2: Right-click the tab on the left of the find toolbar and select close
toolbar

I would expect the toolbar to disappear and the space to be reclaimed by the
document view
What actually happens is the content of the toolbar disappears but there is a
blank toolbar which now takes up some of the space that would ideally be used
for displaying the document.

One workaround is to drag the toolbar out into a popup window before
closing it.

[Bug 965433] [NEW] When IPv4 method is set to Shared to other computers, network repeatedly disconnects and reconnects.

2012-03-26 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To replicate: use a crossover cable to connect another computer. Open
the Edit connections dialog from the network makager applet. In the
settings for the relevant interface: set the IPv4 method to Shared to
other computers.

I just found out the interface itself stays up, but the ip4 address is
unregistered after 0.6 seconds, then restored after another 0.6 seconds,
ad infinitum.

[Bug 943232] [NEW] firefox has several new page-specific bugs

2012-02-29 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

To see examples:
http://www.xiaoma.info/segment.php (enter some Chinese text and annotate in
popup mode, the popup annotation doesn't popup)
http://www.youtube.com/ (try to comment on any video)
http://maps.google.com/ (geolocation fails in all sites that use it including
google maps)

All of these used to work fine but stopped working with a recent update
to firefox (the one before last) and haven't started working with the
latest update. They continue to work in both konqueror and google
chrome.

My current version of firefox is 10.0.2 as included in ubuntu oneric.

The following packages are all missing manpages:
freeglut3-dev
mesa-common-dev
libglfw-dev
libglu1-mesa-dev
freeglut3-dev
x11proto-gl-dev

The manpages are missing in every ubuntu release since Hoary, including
Oneric.

[Bug 923321] [NEW] cannot see stars in Celestia

2012-01-29 Thread jeremy-list
Public bug reported:

Stars in Celestia are only visible if the Star style setting is set to
points. However, this makes all the stars appear the same brightness
and it becomes impossible to identify them visually. If the star style
is set to either fuzzy points or scaled discs then the stars are not
drawn at all. Under the points setting, the auto-magnitude setting
seems to be ignored.

2011-12-16 Thread jeremy-list
The only other person to make a comment on this report didn't seem notice that
it's a patch. IT'S A PATCH! THERE IS ALREADY A PATCH!
Yes, the issue the patch is for is present in every version of Ubuntu and there
is little point even testing for it until this report has at least been
commented on by someone who has noticed that it includes a patch.

I just had to patch the file again after upgrading to oneric. I wouldn't
even bother to report this as a bug if it weren't for the fact apt *#_-@
