[Bug 1874928] [NEW] xfdesktop4 doesn't remember my custom location for wallpapers

Re: [Bug 1398537] Re: gdebi 0.9.5.3 crashing

2018-12-04 Thread slumbergod
I tried it recently with xubuntu 18.04.1 and the gui still crashes.
I uninstalled gdebi and went back to dpkg from the command line.
I will try again on the next LTS release.

I'm now using Thunar 1.82 in the Xubuntu test ppa. The bug is still
present. In fact, it is worse if anything. There is ALWAYS a ghost file
left after moving files.

[Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-08-03 Thread slumbergod
For some reason my wired connection in 18.04 suddenly stopped working.
Wifi was fine. I spend 24 hours trying everything to get it back,
including factory resetting the router, changing network cables, and
reinstalling Xubuntu many times. After fighting with Acer's buggy secure
boot system I managed to get 18.04.1 installed but STILL no wired
connection.

I tried removing the driver module and adding it back but still no
change.

Then I tried suspending my laptop and waking it up. BINGO. Wired
connection came on as it was supposed to.

I don't know what the bug is but it hasn't been fixed and on my hardware
at least Wired Connections are broken by default. Only after suspending
does it seem to fix itself. Hope that helps devs.

[Bug 1768521] Re: ghost files remain after moving files

2018-06-25 Thread slumbergod
I decided to add the experimental PPA for Bionic 18.04 so I could see if
this bug (and several others) has finally been resolved with Thunar
1.8.1

Unfortunately, it has not.

Selecting two or more files and moving them to another directory usually
leaves a ghost file of one of them. A manual refresh is still required
to remove the ghost file.

[Bug 1512120]

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
@yuri. Thanks Yuri, I appreciated the PPA. Much easier to test. After
some additional testing:

kernel 4.9.4 patched Thunar hangs when trying to view contents on newly
inserted flash drive.

kernel 4.7.10 same. Thunar hangs. Can't mount or view contents.

BUT I have discovered that thunar only hangs if the icon for it is
clicked from Devices on Thunar's Side Bar. If I click the Places icon I
have on one of my panels and select the flash drive, Thunar opens it
without any problems.

Perhaps someone else can test this to confirm this behaviour.

Nothing can proceed forwards until we get some feedback from the main
xfce developers.

I'm not even sure if anyone is in charge of the thunar project and my
attempts in the past to ask what the status of the project is with
regard to fixing the bugs have gone unanswered.

Perhaps they have a plan in action already (other than just applying
patches to address the symptoms)? It would be nice to know "yes, we have
it sorted" or "no, we have no clue".

Offering a bounty is a nice idea but I still think this requires
something bigger. We really need to crowdfund to hire a software
engineer to re-write a significant chunk of code rather than just work
out a single fix.

It might even lead to some of the other papercut bugs getting sorted (I
know I've posted bug reports for several small "weird" behaviours that
shouldn't be considered "normal" behaviour in a file manager.

Too bad thunar is written in C. If it was Python or something higher
level we'd probably have these things sorted because more people would
be able to contribute (myself included).

Perhaps it is time to fund a dedicated, professional software engineer
to fix this once and for all. It's clear that parts of the code base
need a complete rewrite and at the moment it feels like the patches are
only mitigating the symptoms rather than addressing the real cause.

Maybe this is something that can be crowdfunded. Please *don't* flame me
for making this suggestion but as someone who loves xfce and thunar I'd
be happy to contribute money towards such a goal and so would many
others who are tired of thunar crashing.

It's just a suggestion. It just seems we are not really making progress
carrying on the way we are.

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
@Roy, when you were testing did you also try to trigger a desktop crash?

Most times when I use Extract Here from the right click context menu on
the desktop, it extracts the archive but when the temporary directory is
renamed > DESKTOP CRASH! Did it yesterday when I extracted the latest
firefox archive on the desktop (it gets renamed to just 'firefox' and
that triggers it).

I think it is the same bug as the rename bug and if it is perhaps it is
not thunar itself but the underlying libraries i.e. xfce4-desktop
triggering the same crash as thunar.

Thoughts?

Just an additional update on my experiences.

Thunar using Martin's binary (with the just Harald's patch). Not one
crash.

I have managed to crash the desktop again, however. I downloaded the
latest Firefox archive and extracted it to the desktop. When file-roller
finished extracting and went to rename the directory as "firefox" the
desktop crashed again. All the icons disappear and conky dies, then
after a few seconds the icons return.

I'm guessing that the desktop relies on some of the same code as thunar
so it is possibly to trigger a crash on renaming.

Are you using Xubuntu 16.04? Aren't you experiencing any of these crashes?

I don't understand why I am the only one seemingly affected. I did a
clean install of xubuntu 16.04. No PPAs added. All xfce configuration
were deleted with the clean install. Yet for me thunar crashes on almost
every file copy or move.

I've even had the desktop crash when doing an archive extraction to a
folder (the folder renamed itself after extraction and the desktop
crashed).

I tried looking for your compiled binary to test but I cannot find it in
the ubuntu users forum.

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
Still no crashes for me. Curiously, I have detected one of the related
bugs is still present though. I'll mention it here because I think it is
related to the crashing bugs.

After dragging and dropping a file from one thunar window to another,
sometimes to source window adds a ghost entry of the file just moved
i.e. you move a file and it disappears from the source window then after
a second it reappears, requiring a manual reload to remove the entry.

And while I remember, let me extend my thanks to Harald as well as
Martin. I wish I could just use the official repo version of thunar but
I am very grateful just to be able to use thunar again.

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
Thank you, Martin. I will explore changing my default view. I've always
had it on detailed view so I'll be able to see the effect of that
quickly.

If that fails I'll try the thunar file you directed me too.

I remember I tried 15.10 when it came out but there were so many issues
with it I went back to 15.04 which was rock solid for me (older glib2 so
thunar was very stable). But 15.04 doesn't get security updates any any
more so I took a gamble that the thunar bugs in 16.04 LTS were resolved.

If I have any success with decreasing the crashes I'll post back so
others can benefit too.

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
I now feel confident in saying that Martin's patched thunar binary is
worth trying for anyone who has had enough of thunar crashing all the
time.

I do not know why the "patched" version from the official 16.04
repositories is so unstable but I have not had a single crash in 24
hours with Martin's.

I'll add it as an attachment here with it's original name as found in
the forum link provide by Martin (I hope you are OK with that, Martin).

If the replacement works for anyone else PLEASE post feedback here so it
can help the developers.

Thanks, Martin!

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Slumbergod-n
I don't want to proclaim the problem has gone, but I've been trying
Martin's patched thunar binary and after dozens and dozens of attempts
to trip it I have not yet managed to crash it yet. I'm using detailed
view and dragging and dropping between two thunar windows, each pointing
to directories on different drive partitions. Copying, Moving, and
renaming with no crash yet.

I'll continue testing but what I can already say is that it MORE STABLE
than the one that comes from the xubuntu 16.04 repos.

[Bug 1769875] [NEW] Copying or moving files between Thunar windows causes horizontal scrolling in destination windo

Another old persistent bug in Thunar.

I have two Thunar windows open side by side. I select a bunch of files
in one (or even a single file) and drag and drop it to the other window,
either as a copy or move operation.

The files are copied/moved but the destination window scrolls

[Bug 1769870] [NEW] Thunar Hangs Loading Directory Contents

2018-05-08 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

An older bug that is still present and worse for me in Xubuntu 18.04
than in the previous 16.04 LTS.

Often I go to load the contents of a new directory by clicking on it.
Thunar displays a throbber/spinner icon just below the 'X' to close the
window. Frequently, the window then freezes and has to be closed.

Sometimes I can break the 'hang' by trying to change to another
directory quickly but more often than not Thunar does not recover and
the window has to be closed.

Interestingly, other open instances of Thunar are unaffected. They do
not hang.

Can someone clarify whether the ubuntu mainstream kernel site includes
the patches. From 4.4.14 I had problems logging in (ecryptfs issues I
think). Then it the mainline server listed patches. Now with 4.4.15 the
kernel is listed again with patches to apply. I've never encountered
this before. Are we supposed to compile them ourselves with patches
applied now. Still using 4.4.13 until I understand the changes to the

[Bug 1514912]

2016-02-05 Thread Slumbergod-n
I'm still getting random Thunar crashes. I gave up on newer distros and
went back to Xubuntu 15.04 and for the most part Thunar is stable but
then every now and then some condition is met which causes it to crash.
Today it was moving files between windows yet again.

I wonder if a solution to these race conditions is to introduce an
option to have file transactions like copying, moving, and renaming,
QUEUED instead of done in parallel.

[Bug 1509658] Re: Thunar 1.6.10 Crash on File Move

2015-10-25 Thread slumbergod
thunar is crashing with more than half of the files I move so it is unusable.
I'll have to switch to a different file manager.
Am I the only one experiencing this?

[Bug 1509658] [NEW] Thunar 1.6.10 Crash on File Move

2015-10-24 Thread slumbergod

[Bug 1509592] [NEW] Error using conky.conf

2015-10-23 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

Following a clean install of Xubuntu 15.10, my old, reliable conky

it is supposed to be backward compatible but something isn't working and

2015-05-11 Thread slumbergod
Hi,

with the newer version of Thunar in the dev ppa I was finally able to
upgrade to xfce4.12 again.

No power problems detected so far.

Thunar isn't crashing either which I am grateful for but it did introduce
some new issues.

Thanks for following up.

Yes. Neither setting made any difference so I concluded it is something
incompatible with Samsung. It's always a gamble buying a new laptop brand.

I'd tried xfce4.12 and I can tell you that I had no problems with the new
version of xfce4-power-manager. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who
have been plagued by thunar crashes and I gave up and purged the 4.12 ppa.

I appreciate your help. It was worth a shot.
Thanks

2015-04-27 Thread slumbergod
Sorry, same behaviour. Just got home, opened my laptop and it had suspended
or hibernated - disconnected my internet and broken my VPN connection.

It must just be something to do with Samsung laptops. I have rolled back to
the good old original trusty version. I'm not having much luck with xfce
updates these days. Trying the new xfce4.12 dev ppa brings a whole world of
grief with thunar which has become unusable!

At least xfce4.10 in trusty is rock solid except for the update for power
manager.

[Bug 1398537] [NEW] gdebi 0.9.5.3 crashing

2014-12-02 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

Using gdebi 0.9.5.3-ubuntu2
and gdebi-core 0.9.5.3-ubuntu2
on Trusty 14.10

I tried upgrading the two packages to the 14.10 versions using dpkg and
they installed fine but the same crash happened.

I'm not sure what is going on. I right click an application (like the
official release debi of Teamviewer) and gdebi starts up, begins its
scan, then terminates. I think it is failing during its scan for
dependencies.

I tried reporting this using ubuntu-bug in a terminal but that didn't
work so I am not sure how to get all the required supported
applications.

Is anyone else experiencing this crash? Suggestions? I don't use gdebi
much but it is more convenient that firing up a terminal window and
typing dpkg everytime I want to install a package.

[Bug 1323423] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-29 Thread slumbergod
Appears to be present in Raring, Saucy, and Trusty kernels so it is
clearly related to the unique hardware of this Samsung notebook.

What has changed is the behaviour with Trusty. In earlier versions of
Xubuntu the volume function keys didn't cause is state requiring a
reboot.

Now looking at getting the scancodes for the keys to see if it is
possible to reprogram them.

[Bug 1323423] [NEW] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

Samsung notebook: NP350E5C-A02AU

FN+F6 (Mute), FN+F7 (Volume Down), and FN+F7 (Volume Up) cause the
machine to become highly unstable requiring a power off holding the
power button in.

This did NOT happen in Ubuntu 13.04 so I conclude that it is a hardware
issue under newer kernels (one of many issues, all being reported
individually).

[Bug 1323423] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
I am trying to get Samsung support involved. What is it that kernel devs
would need to improve support? source code for BIOS? a list of
specifications?

I can't see a 3.16-rc7 but I do see this one:

Is this the one to try?

[Bug 1323432] [NEW] machine does not wake up with lid open - suspend is disabled

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU notebook

The problem below was NOT present in Ubuntu 13.04

In xubuntu power options, machine is configured not to go to suspend when
laptop lid is closed.
Once or twice a day, upon opening the lid I am presented with a black screen
and I am unable to wake the machine. The only solution is to force the laptop
to shutdown by holding down the power button.

On the one occasion the machine did wake (random key presses) it was
unusable...the mouse was so slow I was unable to use it to reboot the
machine.

I have tried permanently disabling suspend and hibernate with hacks
found on forums but nothing has worked.

[Bug 1303736] Re: Black screen after wakeup from suspending by closing the laptop lid

2014-05-20 Thread slumbergod
Just an update on behaviour.

This morning when I woke up I opened my Samsung laptop lid and as
expected the screen was blank. I had set up an alias in my bash with
'xrandr -- auto' to try so I pressed Super+t to get a terminal even
though I was expecting to do this with no screen.

Much to my surprise, after a few seconds the screen came on.
Unfortunately, the system was almost in a frozen state. Moving the mouse
was very slow and jerky. It was so unresponsive I still had to do a
forced shut down with the power button i.e. impossible to restart
through the panel menu or even command line.

I should note that this frozen state where the machine is unusable has
also happened randomly on a few occasions when the lid was not closed.

2014-05-19 Thread slumbergod
With v3.15-rc5-utopic
-- wireless mouse was detected
-- unable to connect to my VPN so reverted back to 3.13.0-27-generic

I woke up this morning to find my machine had suspended to a black
screen using 3.13.0-27-generic. I am now almost certain the issue is
entirely related to light-locker and xfce4-power-manager and will not be
resolved until those packages are updated.

The issue with the disappearing wireless mouse on reboot (which seems to
be entirely random because sometimes it is not present and other times
is detected normally even when the *same* kernel is used) would be
Samsung's lack of transparency with their hardware.

If someone could tell me what the kernel developers need to include
better support for Samsung laptops I would happily try contacting
Samsung to plead for better support.

[Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-18 Thread slumbergod
Christopher, I have changed kernel to 3.15.0-031500rc2-generic.
After reboot, the **wireless mouse was not detected**

I have changed back from xscreensaver to light-locker.
Bug #1303736 suggests that the bug is with the interaction between light-locker
and xfce4-power-manager settings.
Lots of Xubuntu users are affected.

I'll continue using this kernel until it something goes wrong but these
issues are starting the affect my ability to work on my machine and soon
I will revert back to Xubuntu 13.04, the last stable Xubuntu.

[Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-18 Thread slumbergod
I had to reboot to a different kernel. I couldn't log into my VPN with
3.15.0-031500rc2-generic.

I decided to see which kernels would give me my wireless mouse back after a
reboot.
Tried 3.13.0-27-generic no wireless mouse detected
Tried 3.13.0-26-generic yes, mouse detected

With it working again I decided to retry the others again
Tried 3.13.0.24-generic yes, mouse detected
Re-Tried 3.13.0.27-generic yes, mouse detected

I just don't get it. It seems completely random as to whether the
wireless mouse is detected. No other changes are made between reboots --
it is just sometimes the mouse is detected and sometimes it isn't.

I'd like to say it is my system has a hardware fault but then it works
flawlessly with Xubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8.1

[Bug 1320722] [NEW] Thunar window scrolling horizontally on file copy or move

2014-05-18 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

I'm finally starting to get frustrated with this bug. It has been
present for a long time and never seems to improve i.e. not just Trusty
but as far back as I can remember. This is not a feature.

I open two thunar windows. I copy or move files from one to another.
When the file operation is completed, suddenly the windows scroll horizontally
so I have to keep scrolling back to the left edge so I can read the file names.

[Bug 1320554] [NEW] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-17 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

I'm using a Samsung NP350E5C laptop and I've been having strange issues.
I gave up on Xubuntu 13.10 and went back to Xubuntu 13.04 until Xubuntu
14.04 LTS came out. I'd hoped that the strange issues had been resolved
but since doing a clean install I have been dogged by weird issues.

Here's what is causing me grief at the moment. I leave my laptop on 24/7
and just close the lid when I am away from the machine. I go into the
system's power settings to disable suspend and hibernation so that
closing the lid does does nothing. With the kernel that 14.04 shipped
with it was as though those settings were completely ignored. I'd close
the lid and when I opened it again, there was a blank screen and I was
unable to do anything at all, not even start an alternative log in. The
only option was to hold the power button until the machine ungracefully
turned off.

I then applied some hacks I found on line to permanently disable
hibernation and suspend. I've also installed all the newer kernels as
they have been offered in synaptic. The problem changed to being
**intermittent** - my system would randomly hang when I opened the lid.

With the latest two kernels (including the 27 one that just came out) it
is now happening **more often**! I'll wake up in the morning, open my
laptop and there's the blank screen with no way to wake the system up.

I wonder if there is something strange with Samsung laptops and the
kernels at the moment. I have to add the acpi_vendor backlight tweak to
get the brightness working correctly. And for the first kernel releases
under 14.04 my usb wireless mouse would not be recognised after a reboot
-- I'd have to unplug the transmitter then plug it in again.

I'm still experiencing random system slow downs where my machine slows
to a crawl. Trying to move the mouse across the screen would take 5 mins
in little jumps and starts, with no mouse clicks being registered.

Looking on the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2224455)
I see I am not alone and it has been suggested I try a mainline
lowlatency kernel which as of today I will try.

I am happy to try any suggestions to help resolve this because this is a
good machine and it was frustrating having to give up on ubuntu 13.10
and stay with the older, more dependable versions.

[Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-17 Thread slumbergod
There is no BIOS update. I am using the latest BIOS update, as provided through
Samsung's SW Update software (P09ABE).

In fact, the New Zealand Samsung support website doesn't even list any BIOS
update and most of their software downloads are only available for Windows XP,
which this laptop never came with. It is a Windows 8 only machine.

I am trialling the 3.14.1-031401-lowlatency kernel from mainline and now
the wireless mouse not being recognised bug is back!

Clearly, Samsung are making no effort to support their machines with
linux. What information could they provide that would allow developers
to fix these issues. I can't afford a new machine and I am not keen on
dropping back to 13.04 to get a linux distro that works without
problems. Failing that I only have Windows 8.1.

You guys are lucky. My Samsung laptop experiences all the above issues
such as opening the lid giving a black screen (with suspend and
hibernate completely disabled) AS WELL as my wireless mouse not being
detected on reboot!

I am getting close to going back to 13.04, the last Xubuntu that worked
flawlessly for me.

[Bug 1316370] [NEW] Thunar crash unmounting external drives

Re: [Bug 1311923] Re: 045e:0745 Wireless Mouse not recognized after reboot

2014-04-27 Thread slumbergod
Hi,

I did not use 13.10. When I installed 13.10 I found it to be very buggy on
my laptop and I was getting tired of doing clean installs every six months
so I went back to 12.10. 12.10 was a good release for me where everything
worked well on my laptop.

The only reason I did a clean install of 14.04 was because it was a LTS and
I was sure the issues I had with 13.10 would have been worked out. Also,
12.10 was no longer being supported with updates.

So far 14.04 has been quite good. Other than this strange USB mouse problem
the only other issues have been minor xfce4 bugs.

I asked if anyone else was experiencing this problem with USB mice and if
not, what brand of mouse they were using. If I could be sure that it was
only with microsoft mobile 1000 mice I would just go and buy a logitech
replacement.

This issue did not happen with 12.10. It isn't a show stopper because I
leave my laptop on 24/7 so it is only when I reboot that I have to unplug
my mouse transmitter and replug it in. I just hoped that if it was a bug
that affected others reporting it might help it get fixed.

I guess this could be something unfortunate with Samsung laptops. I also
have to add acpi_backlight=vendor to get the display brightness tools to
work properly:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor

[Bug 1311923] Re: 045e:0745 [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Wireless Mouse not recognized after reboot

2014-04-27 Thread slumbergod
After multiple reboots in a row suddenly the mouse was being recognized
again. No idea why because I didn't do anything other than try rebooting
vs shutdown and restart.
