[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-01-27 Thread Israel Dahl
Oh good, I am glad someone else can confirm it. I hope this bug gets
fixed, as I would like to run 12.04 on the Presario. Still have a few
months to get a fix before it is out

save this as

I hope this helps

[Bug 500502] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 + Ubuntu Studio: LMMS lmms_0.4.6 ppa-3_i386, either sound not working, or LMMS freezes when i test one sound

2011-10-01 Thread Israel Dahl
Hi, I can only offer you some advice as who to talk to
http://lmms.sourceforge.net/community.php

or specifically try

http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/lmms/

did you use the

 ubuntu-bug lmms

command in your terminal?

It may be the ppa has a bug.

I use Ubuntu 11.04 (not studio) and LMMS 0.4.10 and it works fine. You
might try to upgrade LMMS to 0.4.10

do you use ALSA, or JACK??? there may be an issue with the version of
non LMMS files you are using.

some users lose the Sound/Video icon in the menu in Ubuntu 10 and up, so
if you upgrade Ubuntu be aware you will have to run it from the terminal
or add the desktop file manually

[Bug 626622] Re: daily maverick live cd won't boot with acpi on

2011-12-12 Thread Israel Dahl
I have the same problem. I have had to revert back to 10.04, because every
newer version requires me to boot with acpi=off. NO other option would work.
I tried every possible one, I found.
Compaq Presario R3000.
I have tested older versions of Ubuntu to see if there was a problem with my
comp but I can run Feisty, and Hardy just fine. I can also run Lucid Puppy
5.25. I can reinstall another version to provide more info if needed. But I
cannot run my system without acpi all the time. I posted some info on it on
Ubuntu forums

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1877590

Thanks

[Bug 903961] [NEW] Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2011-12-13 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

Currently running 10.04 and no boot param needed. from 10.10 and onward
I have needed acpi=off, which is of course a bad idea to run a system
without acpi. I have tried numerous boot parameters and none work
consistantly. acpi_osi Windows 2006 (2001 SP1/SP2) worked occasionally.
This affects other distros as well. Lucid puppy 5.25 works perfectly,
but the current slacko puppy does not. all ubuntu derivatives are
commonly affected, as well as debian. I have tried running some other
live CDs of others (Arch, etc..) all with the newer kernels are
affected. This is related to other bugs

626622
633596
and probably more than that.
Maverick is where the issue began.

I am absolutely sure it is the kernel because of running non Ubuntu OS with the
later kernels and needing the param acpi=off.
I would like to use the modern systems for my computer, as they have much
better features, and some of the newer programs are something I really want to
use.
Any other information needed I will provide
Thanks

Well according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes;

With 10.10 we have also dropped support for i586 and lower processors,
as well as i686 processors without cmov support.

I guess this isn't a bug, but an intentional design

Does this latest Kernel re include support? Because this may be the issue I am
facing? I will try the newest one and post back my findings.

[Bug 824231] Re: Software Center doesn't show LMMS in Sound/Video

2011-09-05 Thread Israel Dahl
I figured out the whole problem with this... and someone may have already
known the problem, but here is the solution...
/usr/share/applications/
is missing the lmms.desktop file
If someone has the same problem have them open the terminal type
gksu gedit

then add this

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=LMMS
Comment=Drum sequencer with multiple plugin and midi capabilities
Exec=lmms
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;AudioVideo;Audio
Icon=lmms

and save as

lmms.desktop

Whoever is moderating this, please get this file where it needs to go if
it is possible. Thanks

[Bug 633596] Re: blank screen on bootup with HP Touchsmart tm2t laptop

2011-03-29 Thread Israel Dahl
I can confirm this bug also occurs on my Compaq Presario-R3200-PF153UA-ABA
2.6.35-28-generic #49-Ubuntu i686 GNU/Linux
acpi=off is the only option that will allow me to boot...
I have tried various methods as well

the OTHER problem is that when shutting down the computer, I have to
manually press the power button to turn it off.

[Bug 824231] [NEW] Software Center doesn't show LMMS in Sound/Video

2011-08-10 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

If a search is done in the software center for lmms, it is not in
Sound/Video. When installed it must be run from terminal (or attached
to panel w/ a launcher) I believe this developed in the upgrade to
Natty. In Maverick the software center listed it in the proper
category, and installed lmms in the Sound/Video portion of the
Application button. This program is an excellent substitute for
commercial drum sequencers, and would benefit many Ubuntu future users
to find it listed clearly in the appropriate section.

[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-08-01 Thread Israel Dahl
I have tested the Quantal ports to precise with it, and still not
working however I will boot into it and run apport-collect -p linux
903961 when I have the opportunity. Currently I have been able to run
precise with the OLD Lucid Kernel (which makes it run slowly and makes
it somewhat useless...)

[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-08-01 Thread Israel Dahl
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise running-unity

** Description changed:

Currently running 10.04 and no boot param needed.

WORKAROUND: From 10.10 and onward I have needed kernel parameter
  acpi=off

Which is of course a bad idea to run a system without acpi. I have
tried numerous boot parameters and none work consistantly. acpi_osi
Windows 2006 (2001 SP1/SP2) worked occasionally. This affects other
distros as well. Lucid puppy 5.25 works perfectly, but the current
slacko puppy does not. all ubuntu derivatives are commonly affected, as
well as debian. I have tried running some other live CDs of others
(Arch, etc..) all with the newer kernels are affected. This is related
  to other bugs

  626622
  633596
  and probably more than that.
Maverick is where the issue began.

I am absolutely sure it is the kernel because of running non Ubuntu OS with
the later kernels and needing the param acpi=off.
I would like to use the modern systems for my computer, as they have much
better features, and some of the newer programs are something I really want to
use.
Any other information needed I will provide
  Thanks

2012-08-01 Thread Israel Dahl
Ok, That is more info for you!!
I changed the 'needs-upstream-testing' to
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream-linux-3.5.0-6-generic'
I obviously am testing the quantal kernel in Precise, as I thought it may have
been fixed WAY up stream, but this isn't the case. The problem developed in
the switch from lucid to maverick. I have wiped the hard drive and reinstalled.
I've tried numerous OS. All linux kernels past the 2.6.3(something) mark are
affected.

2012-08-02 Thread Israel Dahl
Oh, ok... well I will download the latest non quantal kernel and rerun the
apport command.
Before I commit to bisect the kernel, is there someway I can test it without
causing my computer to hang during the boot process? or some ultra secret
thing i can do to get out of a frozen and locked up boot process and simply
reboot back to grub. Can I do this in a VM and it still produce the accurate
results?

[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-08-02 Thread Israel Dahl
I have never bisected a kernel before, so I am checking out your
recomended reading, and I have the latest precise 3.4.0-030400rc6,
installed (rc7 only contained the 'all headers' file so I will only
test rc6) I also downloaded the last lucid 2.6.33-020635rc1 and first
maverick 2.6.33-02063306-generic to narrow it down and find the
regression.

I really don't know anything about bisecting, except the little I have
read so far. I had assumed I would have to reboot into every kernel to
test it, so I was hoping to be able not to freeze my computer during the
boot process.

[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-08-04 Thread Israel Dahl
I am testing the kernels to find where the regression occured. And I am
keeping my notes here to keep track of them

WORKING
The very first listed Maverick Kernel works.
2.6.33-02063306-generic_2.6.33-02063306
2.6.33-020633_2.6.33-020633
2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634

NOT WORKING
LUCID
2.6.35-rc1-lucid... which is the last Lucid kernel in mainline
(2.6.35-020635rc1)
MAVERICK
2.6.34-02063412-generic_2.6.34-02063412.201205172135
2.6.34-02063401-generic_2.6.34-02063401

2012-08-04 Thread Israel Dahl
OK!!! The LAST working Kernel is
2.6.34-020634rc1-generic_2.6.34-020634rc1
the FIRST broken Kernel is
2.6.34-02063401-generic_2.6.34-02063401

@Christopher Penalver If I need some help bisecting can I contact you?
If not who could assist me if I have questions. I am wondering if i can
use git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-maverick.git or if I
need to use something else.

since i have to run acpi=off for it to work, what can I type to locate that
specific part...
ex.' git log --oneline Ubuntu-2.6.35-24.42..Ubuntu-2.6.35-25.43
drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/'

Wow, thanks for helping me despite the huge move!!! I hope it all goes
well for you! I have contacted the manager of the Kernel Team, and
hopefully I can be put in touch with the right person to help. Thanks
again, I had kinda given up on fixing this bug (as I am not a kernel
programmer, and know very little about the kernel). I really appreciate
your help in all sincerity.

2012-10-16 Thread Israel Dahl
I'm sorry but, doesn't there need to be a
linux-headers-***-generic-*-.deb
linux-headers-**-all.deb
linux-image-***-generic-*-.deb
linux-image-extra-***-generic-*-.deb

there is no
linux-headers-**-all.deb
at that link. How do I install it? a normal sudo dpkg -i *.deb in my sub
directory results in errors what am I missing?

[Bug 903961] Re: Kernel regression.... boot param acpi=off now NEEDED

2012-10-24 Thread Israel Dahl
Ok, so I have been trying the 64 bit build, and that seems to work
perfectly. I had tried the 64 bit (11.04, and 11.10 and both did not
work), and so far 12.04.1 64 bit doesn't have the bug. So, if you want
to fix the bug for the 32 bit (just because it is a regression) we can,
I will continue to test. If you'd rather close this bug without fixing
it, that is fine as well.

Searching for 'Party Mode' produces no results. It might be nice is

[Bug 1078704] [NEW] headphone jack sense not enabled

2012-11-14 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

bug is present in Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubuntu 12.04 and Lubuntu 12.04.1 64bit
alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu1 on this machine (64 bit)
I except Ubuntu to automatically sense the presence of headphones and disable
the speakers. This is not the case, the speakers and headphones play
simultaneously. I must install gnome-alsamixer to manually set the jack sense.
Alsa should have this enabled as the default setting. This seems as though it

[Bug 1128348] Re: Unity starts without panels

2013-06-13 Thread Israel Dahl
I had issues with unity, gnome-session-fallback and cinnamon (all are
gnome3 based). Lubuntu (LXDE) worked fine as my fallback session. I
didn't try for too long. I simply gave up and fell back to my 12.04
installation. The interim releases aren't supposed to be as stable as
the LTS. No one took notice of this bug, but now that you have
confirmed it... maybe it will get some notice?

Hi Gary, since you are the second person to comment in recent days could you
tell us what was updated?
/var/log/dpkg.log has the info in it.
find /var/lib/dpkg/info/ -name \*.list -mtime -3 | sed 's#.list$##;s#.*/##'
will print out the commands from the last day.
Could you post the output?
I think this may help to see if everyone has updated to a certain version of

[Bug 1191268] Re: package lmms 0.4.14-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/applications/lmms.desktop', which is also in package lmms-common 0.4.13-0ubuntu1

2013-06-15 Thread Israel Dahl
Hi, did you upgrade to 13.04 while it was still in Beta? This situation should
not happen in a normal upgrade process. 12.10 has lmms 0.4.10. 13.04 has lmms
0.4.14. During the 13.04 beta 0.4.13 was uploaded (and had some major bugs
still, including the issue with lmms.install and lmms-common.install having the
same line... which is your reported problem)
I would highly suggest simply removing lmms and reinstalling it.
0.4.14, does have a problem with the Midi, though... and unfortunately that
patch hasn't been accepted in. Though it is fixed in 0.4.15 (just released)
and that will become available in 13.10 once some testing has been done to make
sure that there are no HUGE bugs.
Thanks so much for taking the time to report this bug!
Please indicate whether or not reinstalling fixes your issue.

[Bug 1249175] [NEW] toolbar gets in the way of content

2013-11-07 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

This is a usability bug.
I am using Ubuntu 13.10 64bit on the desktop (not phone).
I decided to see how the webbrowser had progressed, and reinstalled it and
tried to use it.
Obviously, there is a lot of work that will need to be done to make it ready
for the desktop, and quite a bit to make it ready for the phone as well,
however I discovered when there was something on the bottom of the page, it was
VERY hard, or occasionally impossible to click it, as the toolbar will pop up
when I click down there, rather than the link I was trying to get to
(duckduckgo.com, the bottom right hand link)
It seems that the toolbar should push the screen up (or something similar) in
order to make those tiny links possible to click/tap.

But, as you can see using Mir is absoulte wackiness. It is very responsive,
though, and I look forward to a version that doesn't cause nausea :)
Well, I guess it may be Xmir, but I suppose you'll know if this is the same bug
soon.

p.s. I opened and watched this in VLC, not sure why videos didn't
recognize it.

[Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-11-11 Thread Israel Dahl
I don't have proposed enabled in 13.10, and I have the issue, but it looks as
though the proposed fix doesn't always fix it from a few of the above
comments.
I have variety (wallpaper changer) installed which shows the time on my
wallpaper, but this is annoying to have to Ctrl Super D to see what time it is.

[Bug 1251545] Re: lmms package depends on wine

2013-11-15 Thread Israel Dahl
I am not sure that this is actually a bug. But it is true. I am not entirely
sure that this is something that really needs to be fixed, though. Can you
give me some really good reasons why this behaviour should be changed? There
is nothing inside lmms to install VST support, nor would it be wise to add it
(as LMMS runs on Windows as well and wouldn't need wine), so the end user might
have a harder time finding it (though it could be put in the recommends).
Also, if this needs to be implemented would you be willing to test it? This
bug cannot be fixed for Saucy, but can be fixed for Trusty. This is because
Saucy has already reached release, but Trusty has yet to get to the feature
freeze (which means no new programs, and very few major changes are allowed).

Thanks for taking the time to make LMMS better, I really appreciate the
feedback!

[Bug 1251545] Re: lmms package depends on wine

2013-11-17 Thread Israel Dahl
Have you experienced this particular bug? I am assuming by make-installed you
mean building wine from source using make install. I have already started
working on your proposed fix, as I am building a version for trusty, and I am
going to try to resolve the ugly icon issue for this LTS (the icon looks
terrible in the dash because the rules file builds an xpm icon for the older
menus... simply an artifact from lmms being abandoned in Debian for the past
few years). Once I get it built for trusty successfully, and test it I will
upload it to my ppa, and I would really appreciate it if you could test it.
This way if the new version comes out, it will be very simple to build it from
upstream source with the new fixes in place.
Please let me know if you are able to test it, or if you would like to help in
any way.

[Bug 1251545] Re: lmms package depends on wine

2013-11-18 Thread Israel Dahl
Great!! I am also working on getting the icon to be a better size for Unity.
Which DE do you use? I will most likely test Unity and Lubuntu (my 2
favorites), so if you use Xubuntu/Kubuntu that would also help (sometimes large
icons are displayed oddly in some DE) for making sure the icon doesn't look
bad, especially since Ubuntu Studio uses XFCE.
I can test the lmms-vst package on my machine. I will end up testing it in
13.10, and a live USB 14.04.

[Bug 1251545] Re: lmms package depends on wine

2013-11-18 Thread Israel Dahl
Ok, I just created a recipe, and sent it to the build farm. It should be ready
in about an hour. It is building a ppa for saucy and trusty, so I suppose you
can use it in saucy. But testing it in both would be really nice.
I haven't tested it yet, but it built fine, so we shall see if it worked... I
am not sure if the VST plugins work or not... so I will check that. See if you
can install it without wine and run it just fine. Also, check the icon in the
Xfce menu

[Bug 1232539] [NEW] settings don't automatically update in fresh install with /home in separate partition

2013-09-28 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

I had expected the settings to update automatically on a fresh install.
However when I booted into my freshly installed Ubuntu 13.10 (still officially
unreleased) the settings were wacky.
This is because, although it was a fresh install I keep my /home partition
separate from the / partition where Ubuntu is installed.
There should be something in the installer to allow me to:
a.) upgrade and keep my /home partition the way it is while updating the
nessicary files on my /home partition
b.) have a script run in the background while installing to make sure I end up
with a sane configuration once installed.
c.) using a different directory for each new install, or renaming the old
directories though this is less desirable than the previously mentioned
solutions.

I did install Ubuntu Studio and later install ubuntu-desktop (as I like
the huge preinstalled AV software and lowlatency kernel, but preferr
Unity as my DE).

I preferr to do a fresh install each time, rather than upgrading because
this minimizes cruft and the time required to do an upgrade.

It might be worth examining whether or not it is more beneficial to
offer an option to install with a separate /home partition anyhow, as
this can minimize data loss, and make things easier for fresh installs.

I work around this bug by running:
`rm -rf .config .cache .gnome .gnome2 .gconf `

This seems like it should be pretty simple to run a script that converts
the config files, though I am not extremely proficient at scripting in
bash, etc...

[Bug 1241904] [NEW] mir graphics corruption AMD ATI mobility radeon Xpress 200

2013-10-18 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 13.10, and current unity-system-compositor (0.0.1)
There is some incredible choppiness and occasionally the background flickers
through the foreground.
Some events cause the top to become garbled. The workspace switcher icon is a
garbled mess. the top panel of Unity flickers occasionally.
There is a rectangular section of the screen from the bottom left corner to the
pointer that is out of phase when I move the mouse.

Honestly the bugs are so immense and constant and overwhelming it is
really hard to file this bug report.

I will provide any needed bug info, that is requested.

It does seem like it is an issue with compiz, as opening the dash makes
the screen go wild with all sorts of garbage and colours.
