Is there any alternative or is everybody on broadband these days and

apt-proxy would be nice.

eager to learn the language. Maybe we can try this together?

[Bug 83783] Re: apt-proxy hangs when client aborting download

2008-05-01 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I think I will seriously look into apt-cacher-ng

Tom, I chatted a bit with the twisted crowd on IRC and they were very
helpful. They made me aware of the unit tests provided by the program
itself. The ubuntu package fails quite many. I think this might be an
approach to break down this task into bitesize, manageable pieces to fix
and an opportunity for us to learn apt-proxy along the way. If we are
lucky, we can already fix this bug by fixing the unit tests. Do apt-
get source apt-proxy and call the runtests script. 49 of 160 tests
failed for me.

apt-cacher-ng is absolutely fantastic. Development is very fast (latest

[Bug 218202] Re: [hardy] numlockx does not turn num lock keyboard light on.

2008-05-02 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I tried some more and while numlockx on/off does not change the LED in
any way, it does indeed toggle the numpad on and off.

The numlock key itself toggles both the LED and the function of the
numpad.

So, when starting with a computer that has the LED in sync with the real
state of the numpad which for this example we assume to be on, then
numlockx off will turn off the numpad but leave the LED on. The LED
and the numpad function are now out of sync. Pressing the numlock key
turns off the LED, but switches the numpad back on.

Are you saying that the ubuntu deb fixed this for you? Can you post the
md5sum of the package that fixed it? As I said, downgrading to the

fix it anymore. Maybe you can do a debdiff between the ubuntu version
that worked for you and the debian version you recompiled to find out if
there is any relevant difference.

2008-05-05 Thread Rolf Leggewie
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 5973 ***

Oh, the problem is rather easy to get around as far as I know. You
recompile the package for yourself but you don't redistribute the
binaries. That should be fairly easy to do. If you also cannot do
that, I think you ought to be really quiet and very thankful for the
work that Thomas and a lot of other people are putting in to bring you a
great product at zero cost.

Marxist, push all you want. As a German homebanker I understand your
frustrations. But there is just nothing one can do about the licensing
issues. So, unless you start writing code to get rid of the dependency
on openssl, I think you should go really easy with your criticism and
the I am entitled to this or that and I want it now-attitude.

2008-05-06 Thread Rolf Leggewie
This is a problem with opendns.com. If I were you, I'd just ditch them.

If you want to spend the energy you can try to find out exactly where
the problem is with them and try to get them to fix it. opendns.com is
a solution only for websurfing and a bad one at that. Any other web
activity will likely be flakey. Compare the output of these two
commands and see for yourself dig www.google.com @ns1.google.com (the
real deal) and dig www.google.com @208.67.222.222 (the lie that
opendns.com is telling you)

Closing as invalid, opendns.com is to blame.

[Bug 227547] [NEW] ubuntu wordpress should suppress the please update warning

2008-05-06 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wordpress

I let ubuntu manage my wordpress install and I want to continue doing
that. Thus, I don't think the built-in function from wordpress to

[Bug 235495] Re: unmounted volumes still show in nautilus tree

2008-06-02 Thread Rolf Leggewie
1. Open Nautilus
2. Insert CF card, watch it show up in the window portion labeled Tree
3. Right-Click on the CF card in Tree, choose Unmount volume
4. Observe that the entry for the CF card is still shown in Tree, clicking on
it results in http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14765662/nautilus-removables.png

This does not have to be a Compact Flash card, I believe, but occurs
with other mountpoints, as well IIRC.

For every time you reiterate steps 2+3, one more occurence of the CF
mount is added (also visible in http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14765662

Thank you for your report. Let me try to make sure I understand you
correctly.

You were updating from a previous release to dapper, is that it? Please
be so kind to include the information that William requested.

FWIW, a problem of wvdial into a dapper chroot worked fine just a minute

[Bug 189579] Re: xephyr should have a menu entry

2008-06-04 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Thanks Bryce, for your false accusations.

Your comment is again ridden by mistakes (who would have expected
otherwise?).

1) first of all, it's Rolf
2) I think I have been spending much more time cleaning up your uncommented
(and thus rather quick) incorrect work on this bug,
because contrary to you I explained myself. Yet you were still so
disrespectful as to completely ignore my comments.
You now talk of CoC? (°.°)
3) and your most central claim, that bug 173837 fixed this request is of course
bogus as well. That bug is marked fix released
and I have the latest hardy-updates version installed. So, I challenge you
to explain to me why there is still no entry
new login in window here

How about some introspection on your part? For all I can see, the
enhancement request is not fixed, but of course there is nothing I can
do about it since you are the man in charge (_)

Thank you for reporting back.

Indeed, I can confirm this behaviour and I tend to agree that a script

[Bug 189579] Re: xephyr should have a menu entry

2008-06-04 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I dug around a little more (yes, Bryce, it took me quite some time
because unlike you I don't believe in shoot from the hip but I like to
fully understand something before making wrong claims five times in a
row). Here is what it looks like.

This appears to be neither a RFE for xorg-server nor one for gdm, but
one in the void between them (most certainly not bug 173837). It looks
like gdmflexiserver -n is the command called to implement the new
login in a window. gdmflexiserver can use either xnest or xephyr to
have X-in-a-window. gdm thus recommends, but does not strictly depend
on xserver-xephyr and xnest. Because of that, the menu entry I was
talking about here is still present, but disabled by default (bug
140530), It can be reenabled with alacarte (right click on the
Applications menu and choose Edit menu)*

In essence, this bug report has very close ties to a number of other
bugs. But, I don't think it fully is a dupe of either one of them. The
correct solution IMHO would be as proposed in bug 140530 comment 4 to
have a third package provide the menu entry (which can then be enabled
by default) which depends on both xserver-xephyr and gdm. Anything else
is a workable and maybe even more elegant fix, but not 100% correct.
Since that proposal was already more or less rejected, I guess the
chances of it becoming true are slim and thus the current status of
wontfix probably accurately reflects the situation.

To sum it up: jumping to conclusions prematurely does not help anyone.
We all make mistakes, we should not make the same ones five times in a
row. At least after the second time, start asking more questions until
the problem is indeed fully understood. I hope that possibly my sermon
above might help somebody in the future googling for where the heck is
that new login in a window menu entry for xnest or xephyr.

* Footnote: For me, there was the additional problem that there were some
left-over files in ~/.local/share/applications of my main account which I
needed to clean out before that hidden-by-default entry for New login in
window would show up.

[Bug 238905] [NEW] aptitude no longer shows all installed packages

2008-06-10 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: aptitude

I realized today that aptitude apparently does not always return correct
search results.

$ dpkg -l linux-image*|grep ii
ii linux-image-2.6.24-17-generic 2.6.24-17.31
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86

Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86

But, in aptitude /24-17 returns nothing, /24-18 works fine. I know
that other packages were affected, too. They might all have been kernel
packages, I am not sure.

[Bug 225483] Re: RFE: keep the three latest versions of a package

2008-05-12 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I think it would be quite a few times where I appreciated this feature
in apt-proxy which I was using up until recently. I've seen many
regressions over time. I am battling with one in xorg which produces
complete freezes of the complete machine at inopportune times, for
example.

But I also don't want to overemphasize the importance of this bug. It
would be nice to have. Both Ubuntu and Debian keep an archive of any
and all the binary packages they ever released.
http://snapshot.debian.net is fairly easy to use, still, not many people
know about it. The same thing for ubuntu is quite complicated. -
http://blog.leggewie.org/?p=24

If this is wontfix from your POV, I can certainly accept that. It would
be nice to have, but not a dealbreaker.

[Bug 225485] Re: ubuntu remapping does not work

2008-05-12 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I have to say that I am happy it works for me now and have not looked
into it any further. I will admit that I found the description of how
things were supposed to work and be set up so difficult to understand
that I gave up almost instantly and just tried whether using the latest
debian version recompiled for hardy would fix it. That was the case.

My understanding is now that apt-cacher-ng looks at the sources.list
file for the computer where it runs and extracts some information there
to put in backends_* While I don't completely understand why that is
necessary, I wonder if this will work as expected in a LAN environment
where apt-cacher-ng serves a number of machines with possibly different
distros and mirrors (all deb-based, of course).

The mirror I use is ubuntu.intergenia.de.

Again, this seems to be fixed for both Brian and me with the post-hardy
version, so everything is cool with me, at least.

[Bug 222228] Re: [hardy] different font for Kanji and Kana

2008-05-13 Thread Rolf Leggewie
dpkg -l | grep ttf-* will not cover all the fonts I have installed,
though. I know at least about msttcorefonts which installs msgothic and
msmincho.

[Bug 148408] Re: [M6 LY] System lockup when switching VT's or Resume from Suspend

2008-05-13 Thread Rolf Leggewie
My apologies for the noise. I just realized that xorg.conf.switching
uses the vesa driver which is of course known to switch successfully
between X and VT.

[Bug 148408] Re: [M6 LY] System lockup when switching VT's or Resume from Suspend

2008-05-13 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I have an interesting observation to share with you. Switching between
X and VT *is* possible and even with the latest, unpatched version in
hardy. This problem also seems to depend on how xorg.conf is
configured. With the attached xorg.conf, I can switch between X and VT,
albeit quite slowly. I have not yet gotten this back to work with
Xinerama/MergedFB and X now runs on VT10 or VT11 instead of the usual
VT7.
