sure,
you can see when you run msparse.pl:

msparse.pl

The problem is persistent. Happens during every single installation.

So, anyone?

Give that a try. I've been using it for a few months and it works very
well. I add on "Post-SP2 Update Pack", "RyanVM DirectX 9.0c Addon", and
"MultiTheme-AddonsPack".

I use the script located above as a poweron script through active directory,
set it to force reboots and be silent.
Whenever a computer boots up it executes the script, which will slurp all the
updates down from the WSUS server and install them, and reboot if needed
(without a prompt)!

You can get crazy and script up a remote reboot script also to bounce all
workstations in the middle of the night Users really don't like that though

Depends on the number of clients you have in your network-env.

I'm using a WSUS-Server for updating the clients, but I'm also integrating
hotfixes into the XP source from time to time.

I highly recommend the RyanVM Integrator: http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/

It lets you integrate all of the patches right into the cd, so they're
already installed when you lay down the OS. Saves a pile of time (an
ever growing amount), as well as keeping you secure right from the get
go.

I don't even bother with the updates script anymore. This is way better
for me.

You can slipstream the patches into the OS. I have never done it, but I
guess google can give you some answers on that. I think its pretty
time-consuming.

I install patches from the cmdlines.txt and it works fine.

According to one web site, SP3 isn't supposed to come out till 2007,
around the 2 to 3 quarter.

And personally, I've also stopped using the unattended updates, and now

Re: [Unattended] Windows Updates, failed status 246

2006-12-07 Thread Ben Walton
The actual update pack is just a 7-zip file, so you should be able to
open it and see the contents. The integrator executable is the
automation wrapper that injects the contents of the .7z.

If you don't mind the horribly long time it takes to serially install
all of the updates post-xp install, the default unattended script should
work for you. I used to make it save the reboot for the end, which
saved some time. If the error 246 isn't a critical error, you could put
.ignore-err 246 in front of the particular update that is generating it.

Many options, and they all suck. It would be really nice if MS was
decent enough to release an sp3 with these rolled in...I'm not holding
my breath.

Re: [Unattended] Windows Updates, failed status 246

2006-12-07 Thread Benjamin Burton
I'm a little nervous about a solution like this, running a relatively
unknown Windows executable.

If I download them, is there a script that just installs the updates one
by one? I was able to do this with most of the Office updates. I
haven't been able to get the switches correct for the Windows updates
though, and I've been getting a 246 error.

I came along this link, but haven't tried it myself:

http://glob.com.au/windowsupdate_cache/

This approach is using squid and forces it route specific requests through
a local script that ignores the no-cache pragmas.

However, you will need to tweak the URL-pattern from time to time, because
different versions of Windows Update seem to change them.
Also, I'm not sure of the next step toward evil Trusted Computing
(the Genuine Check tool that is required by WU v6) is effecting this
trick.

Hi Moritz,

That's correct; all I am after is a way to download the updates once, and
keep them automatic.

I have tried the squid proxy approach, however it doesn't seem to cache all
the updates - it seems that some update files just will not cache.

Hi David,

if the point ist, that you dont want to download the updates for each
windows-box separatly? I have seen people using just a squid proxy and the

I think you should check, if the missing updates are included in the
scripts/*.bat files, and if yes,
why the updates are not installed when you run your unattended
installation - may be you don't call
the right bat-files in your top/bottom/middle scripts.

If the updates are not included in eg. win*-updates.bat, and you have
the newest version of this file
from cvs (via script-update or manual), then nobody has maintained
this/these files in the cvs for
your language or alike. May be you could find out what's missing and
send a patch to be included in cvs.

RE: [Unattended] Windows updates

2005-11-08 Thread Niels de Groot
Hi Andrè,

In the tools directory (install/tools) there is a bash-script called
script-update.
run it from linux or cygwin to update your scripts directory to the cvs
versions.

Read the script to understand it a little better, and be aware of the
limitations.
You might want add exceptions if you have scripts
with the same names as unattended uses that you want to keep.

After you used the script-update, run the check or prepare script to check
which updates are missing, and to download them.

Greetings,

Niels

Could you be more specific? I just finished building a ws2k3 system

What update(s) are giving you problems, exactly?

As for Windows Components, you can find a reasonably complete (as of
