Tx. I'm wary of adding things that would reduce reliability - that's
what I'm trying to solve!
What kinds of things might it break? I'm not hacking or trying to turn
PCP into a Swiss army knife, just trying to make it easier to diagnose
messages.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 8.0.0 - Bluetooth Discussion

2022-12-21 Thread mr-b

Is there a list of recommended USB BT adapters? I'm having lots of
troubles with the built-in RPi one.

I checked the PCP docs but there isn't a list. A forum search turned up
a Maxesla v4.0 adapter on Amazon but it's no longer available.
Knowing the supported chipsets would help too. I know Realtek ones are
not supported but I didn't quite understand the reason why. Nor do I
understand how one would use the Realtek firmware posted recently or if
it's going to cause problems. All a bit confusing. :-(

Hi

Is there any way that the Diagnostics page 'dmesg' section could be
converted to human readable time? I find trying to diagnose various
things very difficult when I've no idea when they happened.
I tried the CLI and thought I'd found an option to do it but it doesn't
work.

$ sudo dmesg -T
dmesg: invalid option -- 'T'
BusyBox v1.34.1 (2021-11-20 17:14:52 EST) multi-call binary.

Also could the dmesg section be moved towards the top of the Diags page
to save hunting for it halfway down the page every time?

2022-11-22 Thread mr-b

I recall the last time I had some issues with the LMS update process
regarding notifications in the player and then the actual upgrade of LMS
on pCP, but this time around I saw the notification of an LMS update to
8.3.0 available, then followed the link.
The link had a lot of scary stuff about source code and scripts and
doing it from the CLI but then I spotted at the bottom "For users of
piCorePlayer please use This Link".
Following that opened up the PCP UI with an "Update LMS" button, and
then it all upgraded fine!
Tx to all for making this process an easy one.

Tx for that. I should have mentioned that this is a RPi 4B/4GB and LMS

Will keep an eye on it, but have had no issues before.

CAn you say which version exactly?

I've found Windows BT recently to be very flaky, and incredibly
sluggish. I know BT has suffered anyway since inception due to multiple
"interpretations" of its implementation.
I keep wishing there was a low-latency wifi based alternative.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 8.0.0 - Bluetooth Discussion

2022-10-20 Thread mr-b

Well I've got Win11 to work on one PCP!
But it was an arduous journey and I still can't get it to work on the
other PCP. :-(
To be fair I've had similar symptoms with Win10 but on a different
laptop so I can't completely blame Win11.

It's working on a rPi 4B and piCorePlayer v8.2.0 | www v00017 | linux
5.15.35-pcpCore-v7l (32) | piCore v13.2 | Squeezelite v1.9.9-1392-pCP.
It's not working thus far on a 3B+ and the same PCP s/w.

It seems that keeping PCP's "Discoverable" = Yes helps.
Also the behaviour seems random after the Windows scans for BT devices
and tries to pair. Sometimes it pairs and allows one to connect, other
times Windows says after a delay that the other device "would like to
pair to this Windows device"!
Sometimes devices take ages to appear in the Windows BT scan list,
sometimes not.

Another gotcha was that the PCP "Paired Devices" entry somehow changed
from Type = Player to Speaker. I think the symptom of this was that the
PC's paired device connected and then disconnected immediately
afterwards. I've no idea how that config change happpened but I
certainly didn't change it. I've seen that twice now on different PCPs
but can't reproduce it. Once I changed that back to Type = Player it
remained connected.

Another issue appears to be signal strength. Both laptops and PCPs seem
to be quite different in this. I suspect my PCP's metal case doesn't
exactly help in this regard.
I might try one of the USB dongles that others report as working e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxesla-Bluetooth-Wireless-Transmitter-Controller/dp/B0126XU9CM/ref=sr_1_16?dchild=1=Maxesla=1626034484=8-16

Maybe a wizard to step through might help eradicate issues and make sure
every value is set correctly.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 8.0.0 - Bluetooth Discussion

2022-10-19 Thread mr-b

Tx, I've worked out some of what was going wrong.

After I'd updated my second PCP and BT stopped working, I spotted there
was a new status bullet "Bluealsa is running".
Then I saw a new section with a "BT Output Device" setting which was
blank. The possible values looked similar to the Squeezelite audio
output setting but with ",DEV=0" tacked on the end, so I guessed at
that.
I looked at the Alsa Volume setting which recommended to check
alsamixer. I found that under under Squeezelite but could not make head
nor tail of the settings so i've ignored it for now.
But the BT output now works! :-)

Checking the the first PCP, it didn't have the Bluealsa bullet despite
my verifying that no BT updates were available. After multiple browser
refreshes by chance I spotted that PCP was on 8.1.0 when the second was
on 8.2.0.
So I upgraded PCP in-situ and then the four BT bullets were present. I
set the BT output setting and that works too! Phew! :-)

Maybe the BT update checker (which also seems to take well over a minute
each time) could check the PCP version too, if that's a known
compatibility issue?

I'll look at Win11 again another day ...

I tried on another PC and was able to replicate this i.e. udate BT s/w
and the tablt can still connect but no audio is heard.

Then I wwent back to the old BT s/w and tried it with Windows 11.
Wi11 could see the PCP but it couldn't connect. Event Log says "The
mutual authentication between the local BT adapter and a device with BT
address (blah blah) failed."
So the behaviour is the same with the old and updated PCP BT s/w.

Interestingly the BT address in the Win11 event log is not seen at all
in the PCP logs, but I've no idea if I'm making an incorrect assumption
about BT addresses being similar to MAC addrsses.

After trying out Win11 which I thought had messed up my existing tabet
BT pairing, I decided to do an image restore. After that the tablet
worked fine.

Then before trying out Win11 again tonight I thought it prudent to
update BT. How wrong I was!
First of all my tablet would no longer connect to PCP. So I deleted the
BT pairing on the tablet and did a Forget on PCP.
Then I re-paired the tablet with PCP, it reconnected but now there is no
music playing to be heard.

Do the logs make any sense?

OK. I'll see if I can spin up a VM on my Win10 laptop.

But meanwhile I've now found that BT seems to be completely hosed on
that PCP. It won't even power up the BT controller now.

Turning the BT Controller power on...

I've removed BT and reinstalled to no avail.

Show Bluetooth logs
[ INFO ] cat $BT_LOG

Restarted multiple times etc. Has Win11 royally screwed it? Time to
restore a backup image?

Hi

Does anyone have *exact* instructions on how to pair a PCP with
Windows11?
I've tried various incantations of pairing, discovering etc. on both
ends but neither device sees the other, even though "unknown devices"
are seen and my PCP pairs fine with Android devices.

Trouble is I'd have to keep checking the release page for updates which
quite frankly I'm going to forget to do and seems rather antiquated.
It'd be ideal if it was integrated with the player like LMS
notifications, or via the admin UI e.g. pfsense or Kodi or many of my
other appliances. Otherwise I wondered if the UI could fetch the current
release and just have it as a banner at the top?

Hi

I did search but couldn't find an answer to this ...

Is there any way to have a notification of pCP updates ( or other
component updates) e.g. like LMS?
I don't tend to update on a whim but it's be great to at least have some
notice of updates that one could review. Currently I seem to discover
new releases by accident.
The notification could be via the UI or via an Announce (only) locked
thread where each release update notice could be posted (and to which
one could subscribe).

OK I tried the Update button as comparing checksums didn't appeal too
greatly.

Yes I normally do in situ upgrades.

The update page says "Additional extensions (ie. Jivelite, Shairport)
may need to be reloaded." and I'd guessed that extensions would be
reloaded anyway after a reboot after a pcp upgrade.
Are you saying that some/all extensions need to be manually *updated*
after an in situ upgrade (via the "Patch Update" button)? Is this a
commonly known "feature" ?

I checked the Installed extensions and saw pcp-jivelite but couldn't
spot any version info to check.

Tx - the only thing that had changed was a new drive in the server which
meant the remote image backup share name in my net mounts was invalid.
The music share didn't change. The new drive went in with no LMS
activity ongoing.
Before I'd spotted that share name issue I then added "vers=2.0" to the
music library mount option and it mounted! (I tried Net Mount button
before but it wouldn't even try as nothing had changed).

Then I corrected the share name for the remote image backup and that
mounted Ok, so then I removed the vers=2.0 from the music library mount
and everything mounts again, so the dialect error in dmsg could have
been a red herring. H.

It seems like net mount detects 'something' has changed and then it
breaks all the mounts for some reason. I forget what the retry mechanism
is on L*nux SMB, with Windows it just retries, like a soft vs hard
mount.

I've experienced another mysterious Library "Empty" after a daily full
scan. Nothing has changed AFAIK on the Win10 server where the library is
stored. All shares are visible from another PC. Also my image backups do
not list the backup folder (vol1) on the server as a destination so
something is amiss. Restarting PCP or LMS makes no difference. The
library is not browsable from the LMS settings page.

Dmesg says:

How does one specify a dialect on the net mount page?
The CIFS mount options are currently "uid=1001,gid=50".

Hmmm.

But then I changed the Output device back to HifiBerry DAC+, saved,

The output setting is hw:CARD=sndrpihifiberry,DEV=0

So did HifiBerry OS enable something on the card?

Hi

I'm having trouble getting my new Rpi4 with a Hifiberry DAC2 Pro XLR to
work. No audio comes out of the XLR or even minijack outputs. I searched
and found a few posts back about some settings for this HAT but was
rather confused by them as I've not seen an Extra HATS setting.
Also I found this
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?114030-piCorePlayer-7-0-0-doesn-t-play-well-with-HiFiBerry-DAC2-Pro
which semed very similar. I found like the OP too that the HAT LED came
on when the DAC+ output was used! But then if I selected DAC2HD (and
Pro) Squeezelite didn't run. The Alsa mixer button gives Save and 0dB
buttons, which didn't make much sense to me.
Also I thought that the DAC+, DAC2 and DAC2 HD HATs all used different
chips so why are there only two outputs?

Or is it just that my card is faulty?

The active speakers don't have vol controls, just trim pots for various
freq corrections and RCA and XLR inputs, so it's just PCP
(squeezelite/jivelite?) that is doing vol control. Hmm - maybe wrong
thread!
The ALSA mixer settings were at the those you mentioned already.

The noises are:
1) Boot up squealing
2) Background hiss
3) Transport change (vol/pause etc.) clicks

After some testing I found that if I switched to a USB DAC with the
display back on, the boot up noise disappeared so it's something to do
with the DAC HAT. I found that the noises are in time with the activity
LED so I guess there's some interference issue.

Background hiss varied widely between different DACs.

The transport/vol change clicks/glitches are definitely more noticeable
using RCA (12dB more sensitive than XLR) and on quiet tracks. I can hear
them now with the same tracks on other Squeezelite systems connected to
active monitors, so is it just an artefact of Squeezelite playback? I
just don't hear it using Foobar2k direct to a DAC.
Changing the ALSA buffer from 80 to 240 has helped a little I think with
one SPDIF DAC system so far. Will do some more testing. Maybe these
monitors are just too revealing! :-)

The Alsa mixer and Card control show an amazing arrangement of settings

FWIW I'm running LMS 8.0 (but on another rPi) and have not seen any
jivelite issues so far apart from this one.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite for piCorePlayer

2021-08-24 Thread mr-b

Hi

My VU meters have all disappeared after I switched to wifi from
ethernet.
I checked jivelite was pointing to the correct new player (same name)
and music plays fine but there are just no VU meters at all when you
switch views.
I tried switching VU meters and saved, then restarted PCP but still
nothing.

Any ideas?

Sure, but I'd never seen that method of selecting a field's value before
and it just looked like plain text. It'd be clearer if it said "Select
one of the below entries". A combination of old eyes and a small screen
didn't help either! ;-)

But it would have helped a lot though if the descriptive output device
list was available on the config screen. Could that be considered for
the future?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer and USB Audio

2021-08-07 Thread mr-b

Tx for the suggestions, Man in a van's suggestion worked but was
distorted at higher bit rates.
Then I discovered the Squeezelite Output devices section on the Diags
page with the detailed descriptions of each output and tried the
simplest setting i.e. 'sysdefault:CARD=USB- E-MU 0404 -
Default Audio Device'
Bingo, that worked on all bit rates! :-)

And without having to remove the Justboom DAC HAT.

I think a possible reason why my earlier attempts failed was because I
was using the UI on my phone and copy/pasting in the output entries from
help, (I had no idea they could be selected as there was no mouse
pointer indicating clickable lines and I'd not noticed 'click to use')
so a stray space may have crept in.
It'd be great if the Diag page's descriptive outputs could be worked
into the Squeezelite config page and then made selectable via a radio
button.

It's the EMU 0404 USB, as alluded to by the aforementioned dmesg
entries:

I have a Justboom DAC HAT also but am trying out a USB dac. Or do I have
to remove the DAC HAT for the USB one to work?

I tried all the examples in help with no success.

Ok I found the issue.

I pulled the sd-card, and remember that I could just use another RPi to
check it via a USB adapter. I also loaded the 'e2fsprogs.tcz' extension
to enable badblocks. Both checked out Ok.

Code:

  tc@Touch-pCP:~$ e2fsck -n /dev/sdb2
  e2fsck 1.45.6 (20-Mar-2020)
PCP_ROOT has been mounted 2 times without being checked, check forced.

  tc@Touch-pCP:~$ badblocks -v /dev/sdb2
  Checking blocks 0 to 31092735
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done

Pass completed, 0 bad blocks found. (0/0/0 errors)

After replacing the sd-card in the LMS RPi it again showed free count
errors.
Then I realised that LMS was active and so after stopping LMS fsck was
fine.

  tc@PCP-XLR-LMS:~$ e2fsck -n /dev/mmcblk0p2

Yup, no argument on that front! But there's no point passing just 'y' to
fsck since the vol is mounted i.e.

tc@PCP-XLR-LMS:~$ e2fsck -y /dev/mmcblk0p2
e2fsck 1.45.6 (20-Mar-2020)
/dev/mmcblk0p2 is mounted.
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

I'm confused as to what you're suggesting.

My question in case it wasn't clear was about why fsck in read-only mode
indicated free count issues if fsck had been run on boot? Or does fsck
not fix those?

Well it certainly works fine on another PCP with a screen:

Though the boot says PCPCore-v7.

But on my other one, fsck still shows incorrect free counts, which I'd

Do I need to install one of the e2fsprogs extensions?

Also I looked at cmdline.txt again but

OK it looks like I'll have to get a Linux VM going.

RE: the mmc drive controller errors, is that a driver issue, or a
physical card problem?

Ok so how does one do that? The "User Commands" seem to run after LMS so
I'm guessing that's no good.

It'd be handy to have something like this run periodically to get some
advance warning of potential issues.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

2021-06-20 Thread mr-b

Hi

I experienced some odd instability recently on PCP 7.0.1 with LMS 8.1.1,
and had the dreaded empty library. A rescan didn't work so I restarted
LMS and I could browse the network mount again but the PCP kept dropping
off the LAN, even after a reboot, even though ping was working fine.
Another reboot and it all seems to be behaving itself again, thought it
occasionally times out on the web UI, which I don't see normally.

Are there any diags I should look for? How does one detect a dodgy
sdcard for example? I can only see dosfsck under Beta functions, which I
presume is no use for linux filesystems.

Nothing of note in LMS log file.
I checked in dmesg and found some post-boot exceptions and backtraces
reported which might not be good - and I don't see them on my other
PCPs.

I'd no idea what to look for though when it did happen, but I might
enable syslog for S if I get the time.

Tx for adding the LMS warning.
It'd also be useful to say what navigating away from the page will do.

I only saw a progress % counter on FF with no bar. I had to do a shit
Reload (override cache) to get the bar to display.

The image size makes a lot more sense now, though an old storage pedant
says all that has to happen now is to change mb to be MB or GB and then
we're !Done". Or should that be "100%" now? ;-)

I completely missed the increasing dots on the web page!

Could it log a msg somewhere? I guess that would also help when checking
cron job status.
I tried an image creation to a share with little space and I spotted an
"Out of space writing" error in dmesg.

Also I note that 'pcp ic' runs in blocking mode i.e. not in the

Does anyone know if there's a CLI to LMS to shut it down beforehand, and
restart it afterwards?

Tx. It'd be good to flag that the process is run in the background as
the web page spins, so it's not obvious.
Also about LMS ideally needing to be shutdown, unless it can do that
too.
I'll see how cron works out with pcp ic.

And is there any reason why pigz.tcz isn't included by default? Why
would one *not* want parallel gzip?

I loaded the parallel gzip pigz.tcz extension and got much better
results after rebooting.
Net transfer speed was about 15-20MB/s, but it dropped to 200KB/s for
quite a while. Rpi4 on GigE switch.
It took about 15min to write 4300MB gzip file, but it's odd that it says

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] New sd-card image backup feature in pCP 7.0.1

2021-02-11 Thread mr-b

I've discovered that if I mount a writable share under LMS Network Mount
then that mount will appear in the image location drop-down, so that
looks promising. It's managed to write a 0 byte file so far but Resource
Monitor doesn't indicate any file writing activity. Will do some more
digging.

The cmd then says "Things can be sped up if you install extension
pigz.tcz from the extension page." but of course by then it's a bit late
to discover that!
Any chance this could be flagged on the initial page if it can't be
included by default for some reason?

Also what happens if I navigate away from the backup page?

[SlimDevices: Unix] New sd-card image backup feature in pCP 7.0.1

2021-02-11 Thread mr-b

This looks really useful as it's a PITA fiddling about removing the
sd-card to back it up separately.

I had a few questions:

- the first box says 'Disk Information'. So is this about the source
i.e. sd-card or the destination i.e. a disk? The info looks like it's
the sd-card partition info.

- on the Image Location, can this be a network location (like for the
LMS music library?). My music library is on a read-only share so it
can't use that. Some of the destinations look like they are on the
sd-card already so won't this cause a conflict?

- Is there a way of scheduling the backup?

- How does this affect the integrity of LMS database? Does it
temporarily shut it down beforehand?

Hi

I'm trying out the clock display freezing issue workaround of a cron job

However after doing this, I find the display says this in the morning.
Playback is fine though. How do I get the display back (other than a
reboot?)

Time sync is a separate issue.

There is a long-standing Jivelite bug apparently and hard to diagnose.

I'm still seeing it with pcp 7.0.0. The purist in me hates periodic

Sure, as I said before I wasn't actually asking for a UI button if
that's what you mean by integrated, rather a command method in order to
mop up after a one-off upgrade/dns glitch.

Tx Greg - the internet/dns/repo availbility was showing as Available for
all, that why I was mystified when the next tab showed the repos were
not! I don't think I was hurrying through the pages, but maybe there was
a DNS glitch ...

The reboot time variability seems pretty mad - though I've seen some USB
devices often delay PCs at boot times. I bet there's a rPi boot time
Olympics somewhere! Thankfully my pCPs hardly ever need rebooting! :-)

Rather odd as I upgraded my other two PCPs without issue, although I did
see at one point under the Extensions page that although Internet/DNS
and all the repos were accessible, when I went onto the Available tab, a
repo was listed as Inaccessible, though I think it changed to accessible
after I used the drop down selector.

In any case I used the Update buttons on BT and LMS (update libs) and a
long list of extensions were updated so hopefully that is all of them
done. Or is there an update all installed extensions command?

The only other thing I noted was that the PCP UI times out on all my
PCPs after a reboot - I think 40sec might just be a little too short.

Can the panel consider adding ntpd daemon in 7.x?
It seems folks continue to be impacted by boot-time time sync issues,
would it contribute to "bloat" too much, esecp if fair numbers end up
having to add it anyway?

So if it's just memory handling then it sounds as there will be little
benefit given the addressing overhead with a 4GB Pi4? I saw that
Raspbian 64 bit beta only appeared once the 8GB model came out.
Can LMS address more than 4GB if the database memory config is set to
maximum?

Hi, can you expand on this i.e. what are the user space programs exactly
- squeezelite, LMS, plugins?
Also what are the benefits of running 64 bit over 32 bit pCP, given Pi4
is a 64 bit cpu but can have 1/2/4/8GB RAM? Isn't the 64 bit overhead
only worth it with >4GB RAM? I think someone asked this before but I
never saw an answer.

The new CIFS changes sound very tempting but am wary of having to
reconfig lots of settings ...!

As it tends to be a sporadic thing, it's easy to forget all the various

Hi

I was trying to upgrade the release version of LMS 8.0.0 to fix a .cue
file bug and the update msg points to 8.1.0 but for PCP to use "this
link":

But unfortunately the PC link just opens my desktop folder, so was a bit
mystified as what to do next.

So then I thought I'd try the lms-update cmd in the original msg, but
that didn't seem to work:

Code:

  :~$ sudo lms-update.sh -r

  -r Reload LMS after Update
  -s Skip Update from GitHub
-t Test building, but do not move extension to tce directory
--mm Force the version you want to update. (eg 7.9.1)

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 6.x.x - Bluetooth

2020-12-11 Thread mr-b

In the end I got a Samsung Galaxy 5e tablet, and it paired OK with PCP,
but when I tried to control the volume, the vol bar moved up and down
but the PCP output didn't change, unless the vol was at zero when it
muted. The vol varied fine with a normal BT speaker.
I then found out about BT Disable Absolute Volume control in Developer
options and after I'd disabled this (and toggled BT) the vol control
then worked.

Any ideas why this is necessary?

OK so which nightly version will it update to - stable or dev branch?
When should one update the libs? As a matter of course or only when

Does anyone know how to debug these BT disconnections?

To recap I'm using an Android tablet (LineageOS 17.1) to connect to PCP
as a BT speaker, but occasionally sound is silent, so I check the PCP UI
and the connection is unticked, and so I have to Connect it again from
PCP, whereupon the BT connection is shown as Active on the tablet and
the BT speaker works again. I'm on PCP v6.1.0 | www v0009 | linux
4.19.122-pcpCore_v7 | piCore v10.3pCP | Squeezelite v1.9.6-1206-pCP.

Interestingly I've never used a BT speaker before that has an interface
whereby one can connect to the source, all the connections are normally
done by the source.

Yup. And if you want to permanently map a drive to cut down the amount
of UNC typing and/or if you are using specific user credentials then try
something like this:

net use s: \\piCoreLMS\LMSfiles /user:me my-password /persistent:Yes

To check the mapping:

net use

Time to fill in an RFE for a Browse button in the UI. ;-) It's saved me
multiple times as it verifies that various network/permission things are
accessible or working.

I think your Workgroup should still be "WORKGROUP" though. ;-)

Try doing a CLI file copy to see what the error is. Explorer error codes
suck. In fact Explorer copy sucks generally. I use robocopy for
comprehensive/large file copy operations, and you can also log the
output to a file to check for errors.

Yes the 'net' cmds often give you a better idea of what's going wrong
e.g. net view \\piCoreLMS or net use * \\piCoreLMS\LMSfiles /user:tc
[password] etc. The wrong workgroup will def cause an issue.
Also check the Event Viewer Security log.

Does your PCP use DHCP? If your DHCP server is also your DNS then you
should be able to resolve your PCP host name as it should be registered
in your local namespace.
