I would advise not to put temp files in /opt, use /tmp.

Although your script probably tidies up the temp files properly, there
is a small chance that a "backup" has backed up the /opt directory with
your temp files in there, so they will be restored after a reboot.

Sounds like the ownership of /opt got changed.

I can't think of anything that would change it, for sure not from the
image.

2021-03-23 Thread philchillbill

My install script for ngrok on pCP has the following 3 lines in it to
add entries /opt/bootlocal.sh:

Code:

  sed -i '/^\/bin\/sh \/home\/tc\/ngrok/d' /opt/bootlocal.sh
  sed -i '3 a/bin/sh /home/tc/ngrok_startup.sh &' /opt/bootlocal.sh
  sed -i '4 a' /opt/bootlocal.sh

When I run it as user tc on a fresh pCP install, it runs without error.
However, a user complained of doing exactly that and getting

Code:

sed: can't create temp file '/opt/bootlocal.shTrE956': Permission denied
sed: can't create temp file '/opt/bootlocal.shvBxhbd': Permission denied
sed: can't create temp file '/opt/bootlocal.shgw4bzf': Permission denied

Any idea why there might be a permissions issue? The setup.sh script
itself in /home/tc runs just fine otherwise, so the permissions issue
seems to be just on the /opt location. Might that differ from install to
install?

Yes, Installer scripts don’t work cross platform. Python dependancies
can be a bit tricky, but pip3 using the —user flag to install packages
to your user .local directory works easily.

Ive even built numpy on a pizero for the automation hat Display.

If you want some help with getting it going, can you start a new
thread..make it easier for others to find.

Yes, I thought the "lack of python" thing might be a bit of an excuse.
I believe python is just for the screen updates - they use 'PydPiper '
(https://github.com/dhrone/pydPiper). I guess the hope would be that
they build the scripts so that you can install pcp with the oled and
lirc pre-configured - as they seem to have done with dietpi.

Is the "lack of python support" still actually a problem? It would be
really good if the Audiophonics players (and displays) could work with
PCP. Jasc, did you learn what the DietPi images are actually using as a
player - they talk about LMS, but don't say what player they're using -
I assume it's a LIRC ready version of squeezelite, but they don't say.
I've pinged them a question as well.

The squeezelite extension has been updated for pCP 7.x and 6.x to
v1.9.9.1372 to fix an issue in the new balance/combined channel options
when used with polarity inversion that leads to volume being max'd when
polarity is inverted.

Thanks Paul,

I have a 3B+ revision a020d3 PCB 1.3 with 1024 memory.

My settings are:

33838

Output was set to Analog Audio and I tried changing it to HDMI audio (I
have a monitor connected via HDMI but it doesn't have speakers) but no
joy. The other option I have is USB Audio but I have nothing connected
on USB. All other options are for DACs which I don't have. What do you
suggest?

If I click the output setting where it says equal, I can't change the
field. Also the note says 'Note: ALSA equalizer: Output must be set to
"equal". Click HERE if not' so I am not sure why equal doesn't work for
me.

My set-up it as much default as I can make it and worked fine on pCP6
but I've seen this issue since I did an in-situ update to pCP7

Any other ideas?

Your Squeezelite does not like the "-o equal" ... so try a different
output device.

Are you running on RPi4 ? If yes then try explicitly setting mmap to 0
in the Alsa settings on the pCP Squeezelite page.

hi AlecSp,

Thanks for testing.

I think if your wifi network is what I consider "normal" then everything
works great. It's the networks that are just a little "different" (to
me) that we have issues and I am not good at comprehending these
situations so I can't help much.

I am working on the wifi documentation to make things clearer, as
requested in another thread. Hopefully this will explain things better
and help people get results quicker in fringe cases.

This got me intrigued, too. As a wired pCP user, I tried enabling and
configuring the Wi-Fi connection just now. All worked perfectly
straight away, and it took me no longer than 30 seconds to configure.

Simply enable Wi-Fi, then I entered the SSID, the password, the country
code.

Then Main Page -> Shutdown, remove the network cable, then restart the
Pi. All tickety boo.

Thank you again, Ronnie.

I will give it a go, as per the above, but will have to find the time.

For the record, I got a response from Audiophonics themselves, who had
this to say, referring to insufficient / irregular Python support in
pCP:

The Diet Pi image can be found 'here'

According to the spec

https://jdslabs.com/product/the-element/

I would think it should, check in dmesg to see if it is recognised (you
need to select usb in squeezelite, then se what is in the audio output)

Hi,

I am new to the forum so apologies if this is not the right place to
post this, or this has already been answered. I tried using the search
function but could not see an answer.

Does anyone know if picoreplayer will work with the (original, v1) JDS
Element dac/amp and if so what settings should be used? I could not see
an option on the drop down menu, and I am not sure what chip this dac
uses.

Many thanks,

We should also mention the 'Osoyoo'
screens in different sizes, which have a Raspberry Pi DSI interface and
pretty much work out of the box. Two exceptions to that statement: 1)
they require a type A flat cable (they supply a short one in the box),
as opposed to the official Raspberry Pi screen, which comes with a type
B cable, and 2) the screen rotation setting in Jivelite does not work
for the display - it has the proper display orientation out of the box,
but the touch interface is upside down, requiring you to set the
rotation to 0 degrees so that the touch locations are properly
calibrated.

See this thread:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?113708-5-quot-Touchscreen-display-that-works-with-Jivelite-right-out-of-the-box

You'll see some working examples. Mine did not require much effort to
get working once I figured out the touch rotation problem. I have the
3.5" screen running piCorePlayet 7.0.0.

Most of my test pCP are wifi, it takes about 5 minutes to setup a player
from scratch. So I know it works.

Just move on. Find something that fits better. There are lots of

Thank you Greg. That's no way. I love pcp and the misbehaving of the
screen is a minor issue.

Code:

Is it possible that you are not using the correct resolution for the
display? The display maybe has 800x480 and you are using 640x320.
The touchscreen is sending coordinates for 800x480 as it is the resolution of
the screen and this coordinates will be used for the 640x320 display. So you
will reach the ends when you are not at the end of the touchscreen.

Thank you Carsten. The display is in correct resolution, i.e. 800 x 480.
If that, what you think, would be the cause, the distance of the cursor
to the finger would not change. In my case, as mentioned, the distance
of cursor and touchpoint can be changed by moving the cursor to the
edges of the screen.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

2021-03-14 Thread Greg Erskine

Hi Clausi,

It might be easier to use one of the other distributions or get another
screen.

piCorePlayer only officially supports the RPI 7" Touch screen
out-of-box.

There are some newer Waveshare screens that mimic the RPI 7" Touch
screen so they also work.

Some people have got other screens to work, but it does require a bit of
fiddling.

- 'Add a 3.5 inch display'
- 'piCorePlayer + Waveshare 3.5\" TFT + jivelite'

There are just too many different screens, each with different models,
revisions, firmware etc, as well as clones to support. Most of the
screens have a script or install procedure that works with
Raspbian/Raspberrry Pi OS but NOT piCore.

I also set both ports to DHCP shutdown removed the ethernet cable and

I have both Ethernet and Wifi enabled and set to static IP addresses but
unplugged the Ethernet before reboot and then went to the main
picoreplayer screen like someone previously had asked and posted it. -KJ

Hi Paul,

this display cannot be calibrated. I have no idea how to influence any
touchscreen library. There is also existing a 5" resistive touchscreen
of Waveshare and in the appropriate wiki it is described how to
calibrate this display by using a special software. For the capacitive
touchscreen, which I have, there is nothing like this and that this
display doesn't need to be calibrated is evidenced by any other system
like Raspbian, Volumio, max2play, Kodi. Only with pcp the touch function
is behaving faulty. Sorry.

If the ethernet port is connected, it will be the port used for default
route. Which means that outbound connections will all go out the
ethernet port. But you should still be able to access it via the wifi
IP address.

What will not work is to boot with both ethernet and wifi connected.
Then remove the ethernet cable.

You said that you unplugged the Ethernet before rebooting ... but it is

plugged in when it booted.
Can you access the other IP address?
The fact that it managed to mount the remote NAS shows that the
networking is working.

The capacitive touch screen

https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/5inch_HDMI_LCD_(H)

can't be calibrated. Only the resistive can.

Behaviour is like this: First the cursor (arrow) is far away from the
touchpoint. When I then swipe to the left edge of the screen, the cursor
stops there and is then is closer to the finger (touch point). If I then
wipe to the right, the cursor stays more close to the finger but when
the finger is about in the middle of the screen, the cursor starts to
advance to the right and then reaches the right edge of the screen
earlier than the finger. Similar behaviour when the finger is moved from
top to bottom and vice versa.

The screen is connected via the first HDMI port of the Raspberry and for
touch functionality it is also connected by USB.

The failure messages in dmesg seem to cause no problem which I didn't
had before with the display. It's only strange because this occurs only
in pcp 7 and not in any version of pcp 6. I only have the problem that
the cursor on the display is not at the point where I touch it, but this
also occurs with pcp 6 versions and not with Raspbian or other systems.

Not the PS was defective nor the cable too thin. The little plug was
corroded and resistence too high. Some fluid applied and now everything
is fine. Should have known, the same as last time. But one forgets,

If you think it is not helpful, why are you looking now for a new power

I told you that the voltage of your power supply is not enough for the
Pi and that is the reason for the lightning.

Thanks for your answers.

I read some reviews of PS for the Pi with a 7"-screen and now ordered
the official one. It will be delivered tomorrow and I hope it has enough
power for both so the lighning disappears. My other 2 Pi with screen
dont have this problem so I presume it must be the PS that delivers
enough current but voltage drops because the cable is too thin.

I don't think a dual-PS, if such a thing exists, would be any different
from a splitter attached to a single PS. The important thing is that
the PS should be regulated. An unregulated supply can measure higher
than the rated voltage under no load, but can drop below the rated
voltage under a high enough load.

I do not believe there is a way to turn it off. That is handled in the
firmware, which is not open source.

Common problems are with too cheap of a cable/connector on the power
supply, or something connected the the USB port that is pulling the RPI
internal voltage too low. If you are using the RPI 7" display, do not
power it from the GPIO, use a splitter and power it separately.

Not really helpful your reply. I want to turn off the lightning.

And: As you can read in the post from @slartibartfast 4,9 Volt should be
enough, so it seems to me your voltage measure is not correct or there‘s
something wrong with your system.

I suspect that the hidden SSID is the problematic element, but I haven't
tested it, and probably won't now that it's working.

I was vaguely aware that "# Maintained by user" will allow me to create
a fixed config file that pCP won't later modify, but thanks for pointing
it out, as it made me think a bit more about my use case.

For me, the primary issue was getting the device up on the (wireless)
network and reachable so that I can finish configuration, and with my
current network configuration, it'll require the handcrafted
wpa_supplicant.conf to get started. Not a big deal now that I know. I
imagine that for most folks who have more SOHO-standard network
configurations, the default processes work well.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

2021-03-08 Thread Greg Erskine

Hi benh,

Good detective work! What you are saying is basically correct.

The "setup" method now hooks into an existing wifi setup process. It is
very simple, it takes a SSID and PSK and creates a wpa_supplicant.conf
that will work in the majority of cases.

Are you aware that adding "# Maintained by user" on the first line of
wpa_supplicant.conf will allow you to hand craft your configuration file
and pCP will not attempt to change it.

regards
Greg

I'm still trying to 'sort out the problems'
I am having with Jivelite on piCorePlayer 7.0.1 on a Pi with a
touchscreen and am digging deeper. I found an issue unrelated to that
that I thought might be useful to note here.

I suspect that the "setup" utility you can run for piCorePlayer from the
command line is not fully functional, and indeed, there's a warning that
it may not be up to date that I saw, so this is less a complaint than a
report.

I have a dedicated "media" SSID that is a hidden SSID with a WPA PSK.

Using the "setup" utility with a keyboard plugged in, I set the SSID and
PSK and rebooted. I was unable to connect to my media wireless network.

Using the Web GUI to configure wireless (via a wired connection), I got
it to connect, and copied the resulting wpa_supplicant.conf file off.

I then started completely from scratch and burned a new image to the SD
card, and copied that wpa_supplicant.conf file to the SD card as
documented.

That worked. There are configuration elements in the supplicant as
configured by the Web GUI that aren't configured by "setup", but I
haven't tested to see which elements are critical.

That is an often heard misunderstanding of a NAS. It is totally
uninteresting which filesystem the NAS uses internally. It can be
anything.
Externally the NAS normally uses SMB which is a defined protocol for
giving file information (folders, files size etc.) and files. There is
no real filesystem!

Great that it works now!

They would be needed at boot to see boot screens. But screens like the

those files be available at the right time?

Thanks for the pointer about the files already being available. I
assume you were referring only to (4) and (5), fbtft.ko and
fb_ili9486.ko. I guess I need to check whether the Inno versions are
the same, and figure out how to replace them if they're not.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

2021-03-05 Thread paul-

Do you really need them in the initrd? Why not just put them in an
extension.

But to answer your question, the initrd is a gzipped cpio archive.

Create you directory structure in a temp directory. i.e.
/tmp/myinitrd/lib/modules/.

Then change to /tmp/myinitrd

Code:

  find | sudo cpio -o -H newc > gzip -9 myinitrd.gz

Then you can copy your file to the boot drive. Then you can just add
you initrd. It's just a comma delimited list of initrd's to load.
Keep the name small, as the list can only be 80 characters long.

- or -

Just for you knowledge, you can concatenate initrd.

Code:

  cat modules-5.4.83-pcpCore-v8.gz myinitrd.gz >
new_modules-5.4.83-pcpCore-v8.gz

Then just rename the files.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

2021-03-05 Thread chill

I've bought a 3.5" capacitive touchscreen ('this one'
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07Q8171LB)). I was attracted to
this particular screen because it was relatively cheap (I paid £27,
although it now seems to be unavailable), and it has a built-in RTC,
which may prove useful for a planned install where network time won't
always be available).

It has drivers for kernel 5.4.83, so I'm trying to get it working under
pCP7.0.1. The problem I have is that the install script that Inno-maker
have supplied assumes a standard linux distribution, where kernel
modules are in conventional storage, and I'm struggling to replicate
what the script does because the kernel modules in pCP are all stored in
modules-5.4.83-pcpCore-v8.gz on the boot partition.

The install script uses 'sudo install -p -m 664' to attempt to install
the following files:

1) lcd35_spi.dtbo into /boot/overlays
2) ft6236.ko into
/lib/modules/5.4.83-pcpCore-v8/kernel/drivers/input/touchscreen
3) ili9486-i2c into
/lib/modules/5.4.83-pcpCore-v8/kernel/drivers/input/touchscreen
4) fbtft.ko into
/lib/modules/5.4.83-pcpCore-v8/kernel/drivers/staging/fbtft
5) fb_ili9486.ko into
/lib/modules/5.4.83-pcpCore-v8/kernel/drivers/staging/fbtft

I can do (1) by manually copying lcd35_spi.dtbo into the overlays folder
on the boot partition. I'm not sure about the difference between 'sudo
install' and just copying the file, but this seems to work, since I can
see output on the screen during boot (albeit rather garbled - see
below).

(4) and (5) already seem to be present at the correct points in the
path.

So that leaves (2) and (3). How can I accomplish the same result under
pCP7?

If I need to add those files to modules-5.4.83-pcpCore-v8.gz, how do I
do that? I've struggled with tar and gzip but haven't managed to make a
new version of that file that works.

Is there an alternative procedure for installing 'user' kernel modules?

The screen -almost- works. The display is visible, and Jivelite works -
I can even use the touch function to navigate (just about). But as you
can see the image is repeating, as though the it's not scanning
correctly for the 480x320 resolution. I don't know if this is because
of the two .ko files that I haven't been able to install, or some other
reason, so any advice will be welcomed.

I thought about my use of the rpi4 and decided not to install LMS.
We have two LMS instances on our lan; four players and additional rpi4.

I use the rpi4 (with HAT) as a headphone amplifier in the home office
where the power is switched off every night.
If I don't turn it off in the Material skin browser before it's switched
off, the piCore os should still reboot.

There are two logs with mention of resize.

Currently I use rpi4b as Player/Server and twice yesterday I was unable
to boot up after power off.

This is a different pi to the one that had a dodgy sd receptacle. This
has been rock steady until I powered it in my husband's office.

I realize now he has been switching it off at the mains, and it may
happen again. I completely reinstalled once yesterday, can I avoid it by
using the backup?

How can I see the backup file using Windows when only the boot folder is
visible? How do I recover a working system?

Yes, could be the router not being up yet as I have the Pi on Ethernet
with WiFi off.
Shouldn’t be nfpd though, as the only effect with that would be the
date/time not being set (I’ve had that happen a few times).
