RE: [VOTE] Apache Trafodion Logo Proposal
[ ] +1-4g approve option 4g Ø Reason: Logo – It’s cute and easy to remember. And it also has a good meaning. Kylin/Dragon is a legend of the beast in traditional Chinese myth. It represents the gods, heaven, emperror and all powerful symbol. Font – Clear and beautiful and not lose professional. Ø Question: Esygn’s color is Orange, Black and White. Why here we draw Kylin and Apache font in blue? (But generally Kylin is shown as blue or golden in story.) RE: 答复: 答复: Logo Proposal
Right, but your response and Dave’s are subtly different. Dave implies that if there’s a strong consensus then maybe there’s no need for another vote. That’s not how the request for input was originally billed. If that had been the case, perhaps Atanu wouldn’t have voted for option 12 and instead would have voted for 4G (for example). That said, I applaud everyone’s hard work and passion on creating and picking the logo. I’ve seen a company pick a logo several times over the years and someone has always objected to the final version as “ugly”, “stupid”, “unnecessary change’, etc. It’s much like writing an installer or user interface—it’s a thankless job and all you’ll hear are those that think you did a terrible job. :) --Dennis From: Carol Pearson [mailto:carol.pearson...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 16, 2016 3:28 PM To: user@trafodion.incubator.apache.org Subject: Re: 答复: 答复: Logo Proposal Nope, not yet on the official vote - still making sure everyone who wants to offer an opinion from China (or anywhere else, but Chinese New Year was last week so they were not thinking about Trafodion Logos, I'm betting...) has a chance. --- Email:carol.pearson...@gmail.com <mailto:carol.pearson...@gmail.com> Twitter: @CarolP222 --- On Tue, Feb 16, 2016 at 1:24 PM, D. Hi, Looks like consensus is crystallizing around options 13 and 4G. There were a couple of comments on 4G regarding font color. I don’t know if Ken wants to put up a revised 4G with a different color scheme. I’m wondering if we should do an informal run-off between 13 and 4G (or a revised 4G if Ken so desires) and decide on that basis? Hi Ming, The dragon is there for the Welsh connection, which is why there was some consensus while you folks where out on holidays. If you want to suggest a whale, then I think you better provide the artwork for consideration or it'll not happen. Hopefully, the dragon is OK enough for us not to revisit the image but if you feel strong about it, then that's the way to go. Re: Logo Proposal
Hi, I tried logo option #4 on the website. Screenshot located at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxlwNhWxn8iTZ0FFM2I0WnpwWlE As you can see, the dragon itself works well due to the fact that the bulk of the body is of a darker blue. Alas, the font family doesn't work well with Telex ( https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Telex), which is what the web site uses via the bootswatch theme. Overall, the font in the logo would be too hard to read if applied to the overall website. The light-blue color on the word "Apache" doesn't work either; it's better to use the dark color from the dragon's body. The "Transactional-SQL-on-Hadoop" slogan is lost due to the black font color of "Trafodion", which is why I suggest a singular color for all of "Apache Trafodion" — it's easy to add slogans underneath the logo with text that way. To me, this experiment validates that the logo itself is fine but there's a little more work on the text associated with the logo to finish the job. I am not suggesting to use the font in my earlier mockup but would like to try Telex together with the darker text to see how that fits. It's too late for me to try that experiment at this time so maybe tomorrow. Sounds like folks like the dragon but not the cursive... so suggest splitting out what we vote on so at least the dragon carries. St.Ack -Carol P. -
Re: Logo Proposal
I wonder if we could also consider a mod to option 4 where only the dragon and the word trafodion are present. See the two images attached. I sampled a couple apache project logs and found they do not have the word APACHE in their logos (e.g., HIVE, MONGODB, AVRO, SPARK). With this approach, it is possible to put the Trafodion logo into the "power by Apache" logo, see URL here <http://www.apache.org/foundation/press/kit/>, without the duplication of "Apache". It also simplifies the design and allows a good focus. Looks great! On the writing, cursive is hard to read, so I'm up for replacing it separately. Maybe we vote on each separately (as Sandhya and Amanda did)? Voting separately is a good idea. Having engineers vote on 'designs' is always a tough one. Sounds like folks like the dragon but not the cursive... so suggest splitting out what we vote on so at least the dragon carries. +1 on reduced size of the dragon. The Trafodion writing needs to be at a closer scale to the Dragon sort of like it is on the Apache Hadoop website for Hadoop logo and the elephant.
