Before choosing the file: Did you click "Overwrite" in dialog for loading
styles. If there is a style with the same name it won't be imported with the new features
by default.

Thanks for that info. No, I did'nt notice the 'Overwrite' box. And the new file
I started in haste was just a 'generic' Writer document and not from one of my
templates. That means that the style Text Body was in its virgin state with
left align.

The problem was, I guess, connected with inheritance. All the new styles I
wanted to gather from the import of another document depended on (inherited
from) Text Body.  Of course, in my imported file, Text Body and its other
relatives had long since been modified to justified.

I never use the bog standard Text Body style so I never thought to check it the
new, receiving, file.

I just ran another test using 'overwrite' and that solved the problem. Thanks.

Best,

Philip

[libreoffice-users] imported styles changed alignment

2024-05-14 Thread Philip Jackson

LO version 7.3.7.2 in UbuntuStudio 20.04 LTS

When I imported a set of styles from another Writer document using the
procedure :

Styles > Load style from template > From File

all those paragraph styles which had been with 'justified alignment' were 'left
aligned' after the import.

The couple of styles which had been center aligned and right aligned, retained
those characteristics after import.

I would expect styles to be imported without any change happening during the
import. Is there a setting I missed somewhere?

So, question; is there a way to automate the application of the styles and
remove the tabs at the beginning of paragraphs. Normal find and replaces
doesn't cut it. Otherwise I'm forced to go through several books by hand.

You can find tabs using the standard Find and Replace (Ctrl+H). In the Find
box, enter \t and leave the Replace box  empty.

You will need to check the *Regular Expressions* box in the Find and Replace
dialog.

Like all Find and Replace ops, be wary of hitting the 'Replace All' button in
case you have used tabs anywhere else in the document other than at the start
of a paragraph. \t will locate all the tabs used within the the doc.

If you *only* want to find a tab at the beginning of a paragraph, you can use
^\t in the Find box.  I checked this in LO 7.3.7.2 in Ubuntu 2204 and it works
fine.

You can also use Find and Replace to locate one paragraph style and replace it
with another. In this case you will have to select the Paragraph Styles box.
This operation works fine to change styles but it will not remove any 'ad hoc'
manual formatting such as Bold, Italic, tabs which you may have applied in the
unwanted paragraph style's text.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Autocorrect not working

2024-03-03 Thread Philip Jackson

I recently did exactly this in Writer but I had to try a couple of times. First
go, I couldn't find the em dash when I right clicked in the 'With' box so I
went back into normal writing mode and searched for the em dash in special
characters and inserted it into a document.

Next I went back to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options, typed --- into
the 'Replace' box, right clicked in the 'With' box and selected Special Character.
This opened the special character dialogue and I could see my recently used em dash
in the recent characters and the favourites listing in the lower left. I selected the
em dash and then clicked on OK. That closed the special char dialogue. Back in the
autocorrect options box, I clicked the  'New' button and then the OK button.

Then I went back to test it in a Writer document and it worked fine.

[libreoffice-users] border lines above footers in Writer

2023-12-26 Thread Philip Jackson

A cautionary note which I hope someone else will find useful.

Using LO 7.3.7.2 in UbuntuStudio 2204 LTS I came upon a conflict between two
methods of inserting lines to separate page text from footers.

My exercise was what appeared a simple task, to edit an older document to
increase the line width from the default 0.05pt to 0.75pt in order to improve
visibility when printing. It didn't take long to find that I had long been
ignorant of the existence of two methods of defining a border line:
1. editing the page style, Footer tab, select 'More...'
2. editing a footer paragraph style

My awakening happened when I saw that on some pages I had two lines above the
footer with a very small spacing between them - each of the methods has its own
positioning of the border line above the footer. (Playing with the 'padding'
doesn't affect the positioning of the line.)

Editing took a little longer than I had expected but at the end, I was still
left with a 'page style footer' border line on one page style that I could not
modify. It remained as a 'ghost' and only vanished when I turned off the footer
on that page style and then turned it back on and remade that footer from
scratch.

All goes to show that even after years of use, there are still things to
discover.

Both files say they're using the "Default Paragraph Style". There's only one

It's not the paragraph style but the page style you need to look at. Typically
a document has several page styles of which 'First page' could be one - and
that wouldn't propagate through to the other page styles. The bulk of the
document probably uses something like 'Default page style' and that's the one
where you need to insert your header material.

You can use LO Writer to encrypt a document using PGP but LO will do so by

For Windows, you will need *gpg4win
*For Linux, you will need *gnupg* which is usually present in most

This supposes that you already have created your own public/private key pair

The cells will expand in height to accept your text as you type. If you
consider the cell height to be excessive, you can adjust its width.

But if you want to write two comments each on its own line of text within the
same cell, after typing the first comment, place your cursor in the formula bar
above the cells and create a new line by using shift+return. The first comment
will vanish from the formula bar but remain in the cell and your further typing
of the second comment will start on a new line in the cell.  Each comment might
wrap on multiple lines depending on the width of the column.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Customizing styles and keeping them in templates in Writer?

2023-11-24 Thread Philip Jackson

I've made my own templates for various categories of documents and equipped
each template with its own sets of customised styles. They work fine. I did the
set up some years ago and don't recall exactly what steps were required but I
don't recall any particular difficulty.

I do remember that when I first used one of my templates, my customised styles
didn't show up but that was a simple oversight on my part. In the sidebar panel
(Ctrl-F5) which displays the styles, I had never noticed the selector at the
bottom which by default shows 'Applied styles'.

With a new blank document, there'll only be a default paragraph style
displayed. When I clicked on the drop-down list and selected 'All styles',
there were all my custom styles.

I don't suppose you've made the same oversight?

I've created the styles in blank documents and then saved the document as a
template.I expected that the paragraph, font, list formats & styles that I
created would be saved in the template and reusable in subsequent documents
created from the templates.

But when I use the templates to create a new document, none of the
previously created styles are there. I find I have to recreate all the
styles again as they aren't anywhere within the template. So far it's been
a colossal waste of time.

I've found that all the "Youtube University" and User Guides are
superficial when it comes to styles. My goal is to set up a set of
corporate styles that can be used by numerous people in our organization to
ensure consistency.

Can someone direct me to some more detailed documentation on how the styles
are supposed to work? Perhaps with some more detailed documentation I can
figure out what or how these are supposed to work ... or file a bug reports.

Thank you in advance.

right justified in the header and centered in the footer. Most want the title
in the header right side. Some want the chapter title in the header, left side.
Some want a table of contents which I read can be done in Write in the header I
believe.

The first page of a chapter is a little different. There's some white space at
he top (I put 6 double spaced lines), then an a chapter number or title, more
white space (same), then a page by age repeat of the above first paragraph.

One would think this should be possible with a couple of styles.

I can change an existing paragraph style with no problem. But setting up a new
one with the above attributes and getting it defined for entire page/story is
eluding me for some reason. It's driving me nuts to the point that keep a
couple blank formatted pages around as above and just copy them to new stories.

Is there a list of common mistakes I can look at to try figuring out I'm dong
wrong?

All the above requirements, as you suppose, are capable of being placed into
page or paragraph styles. For the example of the first page of a chapter, you
can define a new page style based off the default page style. I find the
easiest way of working is to have the Styles sidebar visible on the right hand
side of the screen, select the page styles by clicking on the little icon at
the top (there are six of these and on my Writer, the page styles icon is 4th
from the left). Then on the Default page style, right click and select New
Style and in the dialogue that opens, proceed from tab to tab to set up the
characteristics you require.

First you'll need to specify that it's 'right side only', then you can set the
top margin to a larger value to avoid the ad hoc formatting you do with 6
double spaced lines. You can also select to have no header on this page (which
may not be what your agents require but is typical for print formats.)

To get more space under the chapter title, you will achieve this by modifying
(or creating a new style) the Heading style you use for these chapter titles.
That is done within the paragraph styles in the sidebar.

All text paragraphs can be set up with single or double spacing. Header and
footer styles can be set up with the various fields you require (chapter title,
book title, page number...). You can create new header, footer, heading and
text body styles from the default versions and give them new names which help
you to remember which is which.

For a lengthy manuscript, it is likely that you will require several page
styles (I have preface, left hand empty, right hand new chapter, regular
left/right mirrored pages for the body of the book, back-matter left/right
pages). Same goes for paragraph styles: first paragraph of chapter (no indent),
regular text body, several list styles, centered text example style ... and so
on.  They take a little time to set up but can be transferred to other
documents as you need them.

Using styles will avoid a lot of complications in the coding if you
subsequently require to turn the manuscript into an epub. Ad hoc formatting is
liable to leave an unwanted heap of formatting tokens in the eBook. Once you
get the hang of it, it saves a load of aggro and I find the styles easier to
set up in Writer than in Word.

That's interesting that Amazon accepts EPUB files. I've always been under the
impression that Kindles only use one of Amazon's proprietary file formats. In
fact, I have never found a way to load and read an EPUB file on a Kindle
device, whether it's my dedicated Kindle, a Kindle Fire, or the Kindle app on
my phone. Is there some secret to getting Kindles to read and display EPUB
files?

Perhaps there is a difference between what Amazon will accept for their store
and what will actually display on a Kindle device.

Amazon now prefers ebook uploads to KDP by epub or kpf. In the past (until,
what, a couple of years or three ago) authors had to convert epub to mobi which
was easy to do with a bit of free software supplied by KDP, Kindlegen. Now you
can straight upload your epub file to KDP but I prefer to upload the kpf. If
you purchase from Amazon, they don't download you an epub but one of their
propritary formats depending on the device you're using.

Putting an epub on a kindle reading device is another matter. I'm reading an
epub on a Kindle Fire at the moment and used the BookFunnel app to download it
to the Fire and to read. But the text font is not adjustable, the chapters
don't start on a new page. The DropCap at the beginning of each chapter doesn't
scale correctly. You might just as well be reading a pdf file. The only reason
I'm reading like this is that the Fire is my only portable bit of kit that
remains at present and I can't manage my desk top mc in bed.

'enormous' compared to the original epub file although a subsequent download
from Amazon is only about the same size as the epub. So possibly the kpf
contains several variants that Amazon uses for different readers.

I also check the epub display in Adobe Digital Editions. One thing is for sure,
not all ereading devices are equal and sometimes they can give an awful
display. 'Drop Caps' are one of the worst for variability when you compare the

LO Writer Export claims to be able to do this. I get an error when I try.

Calibre dumps all my formatting it seems, no paragraph indents, no margins, no

I can assemble an OTM into an ODT and go from there to a DOCX for submission.
But I need to get it into an EPUB as well.

Any construction thoughts will be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Chris,

My favorite software for converting to epub format is SIGIL. I've found that,
for me at any rate, Sigil does a cleaner job than Calibre and Sigil has a
plugin extension (ODTimport) which will allow import and conversion of .odt
files.
This plugin will maintain the names of your LO styles once you've set up an
initial config file.

Same goes for direct import of docx files (DOCXImport plugin).

Sigil is easy to use but like all sophisticated software it has a learning
curve.

Things to be wary of are the vast amount of hidden 'styling' bits and pieces
which exist in word processor files. These can cause large numbers of unwanted
html tags to be placed in the epub. They won't necessarily cause malfunction of
the epub but make for untidy and excessive coding.

Sigil exists for Windows, Mac and Linux -  see https://sigil-ebook.com/sigil/

How do I shrink the styles sidebar? Zoom works lovely on the main window--I used
"optimal" most of the time, but that doesn't help if I can't shrink the styles
sidebar.

I can drag to make it bigger but not to make it smaller than a certain size.
And I can't find anywhere to change the font size. So, for example, if I need
to shrink the entire Writer window down to share screen space I end up with the
styles sidebar taking up half the window with large type even when the main doc
window type is so small it's hardly readable.

There must be some way to do this. I just can't find it.

Thanks.

In LibreOffice writer:

To create a list of references,  it was used not the bibliography
mechanism, but cross-references to numbered paragraphs in the list of
references.
I have found that, for unknown reasons, a number of the cross
reference numbers in this list are set to font size 10 instead of the
required 12. My various attempts to change this size do not work.
How can I increase the font size in reference numbers in the
bibliography?

Attached to the mail is a printscreen of a piece of the bibliography
with different font sizes. Numbers [345]-[349] have a font size of 10,
unlike other numbers. Cross-reference numbers inserted in the text
itself, as well as the entire text, are in font size 12.

Attempts that didn't work:

1) Left-click on any of the numbers, highlighting the entire field of
numbers - and change the size from 10 to 12
2) When deleting the text of a paragraph in the reference list, the
cross reference number returns to font size 12, but inserting/typing
any character in the area of that paragraph returns the reference
number size to 10.

The old version of LibreOffice 5.3.6.1 is used (rpm packages in CentOS
7). So a large number of hotkeys, unfortunately, do not work.
But I guess my question has nothing to do with CentOS at all.

PS. I don't work professionally with LibreOffice.

Re: [libreoffice-users] after the fact page numbers

time.

I suspect this has something to do with a style sheet. I'm unclear how to
propagate throughout the document after the fact of the document's creation,
i.e. I've already written the book.

Also, If I manage this miracle. will the chapter numbers be properly re
sequenced if I concatenate all the chapters. That would really be nice. I'll be
doing that manually in LO Writer using cut-n-paste unless there's a better more
automated way.

Styles are really the answer to well constructed documents and they do seem
like an overly large burden when you first start looking at them. But there is
some very good documentation on the Open Documents website:
https://documentation.libreoffice.org/

I imagine all your separate documents have the same basic default page style.
If you edit your page style in the first document and activate the footer and
then insert the page number field into one of the footers, every page will then
have a number.

If you then open your next chapter and select all the text (Ctrl-A) and then
copy it (Ctrl-C), you can paste this text into the bottom of the last page of
your first chapter and all the pages of the second chapter will then have
numbers which carry on the sequence of the first chapter.

You will probably want each chapter to start on a right hand page and that may
require inserting a blank page at the end of a preceding chapter.

When you come to formatting the entire book, you will probably come round to
the idea that you need several page styles. These may be for a preface with
page numbers in roman numerals; for the first page of a chapter where you may
not want a header and the chapter title may need to be part way down the page.
Then any blank left hand page would be another style (possibly without header
or footer - depending on your style preferences). And finally another style for
any back-matter.

Each new page style is easily developed from the default page style. The difficulty
comes in changing the style of a page. The traditional double-click used to change a
paragraph style doesn't work, in my experience, for page styles. What you do is go to
the bottom of the preceding page, click Insert > More breaks > manual break >
select page break and in the drop down list, select the page style required and click OK.

This will give you an empty page of the style required. Place the cursor at the
top of this page and hit delete. It will then be filled with the material of
the next page in the document correctly formatted for the page style you
inserted.

If sometime, you need to stitch two docs together and you require an unusual
page number at the front end of the second doc, you can pre-set its number
using this sequence suggested to me a couple of years or so ago by Regina
Henschel.

In this case, I wanted the Writer doc to start its numbering at page 2 so I
could export it as a pdf and then stitch to it another pre-existing pdf page
with no.1. I thought to use an off-set but it wouldn't work so Regina kindly
showed me:

That is the wrong tool for your purpose. Go to the very first paragraph of the page. Open the properties of that
paragraph. Go to tab "Text flow". Enable Breaks "Insert". Enable "With page style".
Enable "Page number". Enter 2.

The tool "Offset" has a totally different use case. It is used in letter for
the information in the footer, that this page of the letter has a following page. And for
this use case it is the correct behavior, that it is empty for the last page of the
letter.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unresolved question re linking to another section in the same document

I don't use the tabbed bar user interface but I've just given it a try to see
where your problem could be.

What I found is that the insert - hyperlink works exactly the same. You highlight
the entry you wish to turn into a link. You click either the hyperlink icon or
Insert > hyperlink and that opens the hyperlink dialog box. Inside this box,
you click on the third icon on the left hand side, 'Document', and in the main
pane of the hyperlink box, you'll see the 'Target in Document' section. At the far
right end, level with the 'target' entry box, click on the icon.

This opens a 'Target in Document' dialogue box where you'll see a list of
entries. Near the bottom is 'Bookmarks' which when clicked on will show a drop
down list of all the bookmarks you have created (using the names you gave to
each bookmark). Select the one you need, click Apply and then Close. The focus
returns to the Hyperlink box where you'll see the name of your bookmark in the
target box. Click apply and close and it's 'job done.'

No need to go trying to change tabs.

Now my problem is to get back to my standard gui appearance and I can't find the
View>User interface in the tabbed view !!  Oh well !!

Yes, it looks like you got a box with old software. You can download up to date

You'll almost never get the latest, latest LO versions from Ubuntu. The LO

more stable business deployments.

I have LO 7.5 on my Windows10 box but for my day to day use of Writer and Calc
I don't notice any functional advantages in 7.5 over the 7.3.7.2 which is
supported by Ubuntu in their LTS 22.04 os and which is my main every day work

But as a general principle, it's never good to fall too far behind with old
versions.

Re: [libreoffice-users] problems on Ubuntu

2023-09-03 Thread Philip Jackson

Hi : You said in the original post that you switched to ubuntu this year. From
the info you just posted, the Build ID would indicate that you have a build
intended for Ubuntu 20.04 which is three years out of date. The 20.04 LTS was
replaced by LTS 22.04 in April of 2022.  Next LTS should be in 24.04.

I'm using UbuntuStudio LTS 22.04 and my LO version is 7.3.7.2 and the package
manager is quoting 1:7.3.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.3

So, is Ubuntu behind on the updates?

P.S. I once had a similar problem on Linux Mint, but that went away, the
current issue happened after my switch to Ubuntu.

Maybe not; I had this with a previous version of LO. After updates,
the problem has gone. I conclude there were issues with certain versions

Unfortunately, I don't recall the version(s) of LO that suffered the

suffer the problem.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Signature Line in Calc - Where is text size determined?

2023-09-01 Thread Philip Jackson

Further to my last reply, you can encrypt a Writer file using pgp within LO
Writer. You can see the option in File > Save As  but you will need an Openpgp
client on your system and you will need to have created a private/public key pair.
Most all linux distributions already have a pgp client installed [gnupg ?] but
Windows users will need to install gpg4win.

Is there a simple step by step guide for this?

If I wish to store my private key for an LO signature will it go to the same

I need to have the signature image which can be used like a "stamp" and added

If anybody can shine more light it would be very much appreciated.

As I understand it, the date is only added when you sign the signature line
with a digital certificate. The creation of a signature line is a separate
activity from the signing of that digital line.

When you insert the signature line, it shows your name and status in an image
box. If you hover over this image box and then right click, the context box
shows at the bottom the option to sign the signature line.  In order to do
that, you must have previously created a digital certificate in the form of an
X509 certificate which you save in LO.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Signature Line in Calc - Where is text size determined?

2023-09-01 Thread Philip Jackson

Hi Budge:

For your item 1, placing an image of a signature in a document does nothing to
render it secure unless you also use a digital signing process.

It is many rears since I used PGP so I don't recall well enough to give you a
primer on the subject. What I would say is that you can sign any document with
PGP but you wouldn't do it inside LO Writer. You would sign the file through
your file explorer invoking the appropriate PGP incantation. This would not
provide any physically visible signature line inside the .odt file but would
provide you a separate 'signature file' which you could sent out with the
signed file and the recipient could then use PGP to check that the file had not
been altered in transit.

The recipient would have to be PGP aware and as you probably know, PGP is
available for all platforms.

The X509 type certification which you would invoke inside Writer requires that
you first get some certification authority to provide you with an X509
certificate. These are the same sorts of certs that https websites use and SSL
data transfers too. You would probably have to buy such a certificate. There
are some free CA's (certification authorities) about. CAcert is one such, open
source authority.  See https://www.cacert.org/    You can Google them.

For further help on using signatures with LO, see their help files. One good
place to start is:

https://help.libreoffice.org/7.3/en-US/text/shared/guide/digitalsign_send.html?DbPAR=SHARED#bm_id7430951

It takes time to get into this subject well enough to provide full document
security. Bon courage!!

I couldn't repeat it. I have no idea what logic is involved.

Hmm the gremlins persist - my last email seems not to have made it to the list.

First, in answer to a query, the dialogue box style is set to system not LO's
own. But as, today, I can't provoke the behaviour at all, I can't say whether
the choice of style affects matters.

And the text of my last email, telling of a very odd thing, was as follows

Thanks for the comment; similar I guess.

The craziest thing today though. Having tried and failed to make my desktop
fail again, I've just tried my rather slower laptop. The dialogue box briefly
flashed up something I couldn't make out, so I set a screen recorder running.
Serious weirdness is evident.

When I do the 'Save As', the dialogue box comes up. At one point as I step
through frame-by-frame, the main area (the panel with a list of file names on
disk) is empty, and the save as file name box at the top contains the
highlighted file name, no type.

At the next frame, the main area is populated, and the filename box now
contains the name plus highlighted type - which is the bad behaviour I have
noted.

I should add, it took a couple of tries to get it to happen.

I can't imagine what's going on internally to do this. And seemingly randomly
at that.

Maybe the gremlins are getting restless? :}

===

If it happens again, try the LO file dialogue. I had do do this a while back
for a period where the KDE dialogue was acting badly under LO.

The last two responses (Mike and Steve) mentioned dialogs - system and LO. That
was something I hadn't considered so I just checked what I'm using.

In my UbuntuStudio LTS 2204 with KDE Plasma desktop, I'm using every day LO's
own dialog boxes. Not thro a specific choice but because it never occurred to
me to do otherwise. And as I've said in a couple of posts to this thread, I've
never experienced the OP's issue although 'save as' is part of my daily routine.

So I just changed the setting - I deselected the use LO open/save dialogs and
then tried a 'save as'. The suggested filename was then complete with the odt
suffix.  I re-selected the LO open/save dialogs and tried again - the suggested
filename was without the odt suffix.  So it seems that using system dialogs
does play a part in this affair.  And my distro now uses the KDE desktop
whereas for years it was XFCE.

I just switched from the KDE file manager (Dolphin) to the LO file load/save
dialogues, there is definitely an issue with LO when using Dolphin that is not
evident with other apps using Dolphin.
Philip, are you using LO from their site or an Ubuntu packaged version.
Mike, you say both machines are Mint, MATE or Xfce? Did you install from a PPA
or the LO website.

It's over a year since I upgraded to UbuntuStudio LTS 2204 and I don't recall whether I
just stuck with the distro version of LO or downloaded from the LO site - I've done both
over the years. When I check "which libreoffice" it returns
/usr/bin/libreoffice so I imagine I'm using the distro supplied version otherwise it
would be in /opt/ wouldn't it?

I don't have any trouble with opening Writer or Calc files from Dolphin. I
always set up the file manager to open files with a single click and it just
works fine.

I would interpret the OP's problem differently. It sound to me that he would

and does not get limited by the page style's margin settings.

I've tried to do that in the past.  It isn't possible to set the the header
margins to a negative value within the page style > header settings.

But if you go to the corresponding header *paragraph style*, and click
'modify', then in the 'indents and spacing' tab you can set 'Before text' to a
negative value.

You can also click in the header and manually move the left and right markers
in the ruler. This will change all the headers of that paragraph style in the
document.  This is the easiest solution, at least for me.

Hi all; a very weird issue has been found by my wife, which I can repeat on a

What happens is this. Take an odt file, open it in Writer then go to 'Save As'.
The expected behaviour is that the filename in the dialogue box will be filled
in and selected/highlighted and there'll be no file type appended. Eg, I open
yyy.odt, and 'Save As' displays just 'yyy' (highlighted).

However, sometimes and for no apparent reason, the dialogue box instead
displays filename and file type ('yyy.odt'), with the type (only) highlighted.
This causes issues when trying to save as a different type (eg as .docx)

(TLDR: open question at end! The details of my testing results are too long;
sorry.)

Thanks all for comments, including one off-list. Ap[ologies for not getting
back sooner - family matters intervened.

To clarify, my made-up name yyy.odt was (previously) by way of indicating what
happens, not that that was the literal file causing problems. Apologies for any
mis-direction.

I'm still none the wiser as to what's happening. I've just checked again the
environment for the files. I have a file in a directory /dhome/mike, and an
identical copy (^C ^V in a file manager) in /dhome/mike/temp of a file called
Saturday  song sheet.odt
(yes - there are two spaces together there, but that's not the issue)

I close LO. Double-click on the one in the temp directory, head for File|Save
As. The filename is filled in
Saturday  song sheet
and selected. No file type.

So, I close LO. Double-click on the one in the higher directory; again
File|Save As. This time, the file name and type appear;
Saturday  song sheet.odt
the /type/ alone is selected.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the behaviour in the two cases
should be different.

To add to my confusion, I've just tried the following sequence of operations, starting
with the "failing" file in /dhome/mike:

make a copy and change name:
cp Saturday\ \ song\ sheet.odt yyy.odt
open yyy.odt and see that Save As prefills the file name box as "yyy.odt" with
the odt selected.

Rename and do the same again:
mv yyy.odt yy.odt
Same issue - Save As shows the name and type.

Finally, do it again:
mv yy.odt y.odt
But now y.odt opens the same, but Save As simply shows a highlighted "y" in the
file name box.

Oh, and if I rename y.odt back to yy.odt, the problem comes back. And, if I
copy yy.odt (fails) to my temp directory, all is well with the copy.

The thing is, when trying to save as .doc having the file type pre-set in the
box causes a problem - LO will try to save a .doc (or whatever) as the type
shown, and it needs manually changing. That's hazardous for someone like my
wife, and can potentially lose the original .odt file.

I've just tried a similar sequence with the same file in my "real" home
directory (/home/mike) with identical results.

**?
Does LO perhaps treat "top-level" directories in some way specially? My current guess is
that multi-character file names in a "top-level" directory are treated differently from
others. That would be very odd though, so IMBW!

Thanks for reading. I find this sort of problem hard to describe concisely. Am
I missing something obvious?

Hi Mike,
I've tried to replicate your series of moves listed in your latest email. I
even started with a file of the same name, Saturday  song list.odt, and used mv
and cp as close as I could following your sequence. In every case, when I came
to 'save as' in LO Writer 7.3.7.2 in UbuntuStudio 2022LTS, only the file name
without extension was shown in the 'file name' box. I tried saving into the ~/
directory and into other lower levels.

I have been unable to replicate your case where the file name and its extension
are given in the 'save as' | 'file name box'.

I'm commonly working on Writer docs three and four levels down from the home
directory and 'save as' is one of my most common ways of duplicating a file to
provide a starter in a new directory. I've never seen the behavior you describe.

This doesn't help you, I'm afraid. Could it be something connected with your OS
version? I can't exactly recall if my LO is the UbuntuStudio distribution
version or whether I downloaded it from the LO website - I've done both over
the years. When I look where it is installed ( usr/bin/libreoffice) I would
expect I'm using the version supplied by UbuntuStudio.

2023-07-18 Thread Philip Jackson

Hi :

had the problem you describe. Sorry.

Hi all; a very weird issue has been found by my wife, which I can repeat on a
separate machine. Both use LO 7.3.7.2 on Mint 21.

Even more odd is that simply copying  (^C, ^V in a file manager) a
wrongly-behaving file to a different directory can change the behaviour.

I wondered if my wife had managed to include some weird character, but
the filename /looks/ kosher: 'ls -1 | od -cb' shows nothing untoward. And
indeed, one or two of my own files show the same behaviour. (I rarely use 'Save
As' anyway.)

I'm at a bit of a loss about where to check next. Has anyone else experienced
this please and can say what's happening?

TIA.

Hi Mike,

On 22/05/2023 14:10, Mike Flannigan wrote:

Does that work?

I looked there but it seems to be basically a font replacement table informing
LibreOffice what font to substitute when a document uses a font which is not
available on the computer. This table only sets the font face and not the size.

Secondly, there is a specification for font for html, sql,  and Basic sources.
In any case it calls Hack at 15pt which never happens in the spreadsheet.
Doesn't seem to apply to my case.

Calc always gives me the fontface I want/specify in the Default.ots template
(Liberation Sans).  My modified template always provides 4 sheets with the font
size set at the 12pt which I specified. The problem which I have to correct
manually each time, occurs when I create a new sheet. The font face is correct
but the size reverts to 10pt on the new sheet.

The same goes if a create a new spreadsheet using File > New > Spreadsheet
without passing by my Default.ots template. The new spreadsheet has the correct
number of sheets with the correct font face but all set at 10pt.

So I conclude that LibreOffice has some setting deeper within its structure
that specifies 10pt.  I would like to understand where that setting is and I'm
hoping someone can point me to it.

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] double-spacing within an outline

2022-12-17 Thread Philip Jackson

It's a little more complex than you describe. If I'm using one of my 'list'
styles where in its specification, the 'next style' is described as the same, I
can hit return multiple times and each leaves me a blank line in the same list
style.

If I'm in my regular 'text body' style and I start a new para in that style,
then I hit one of the list formatting buttons in the toolbar, my paragraph
remains in the text body style with formatting applied to provide an indent and
bullet or number. But I am always in the 'text body' style. If I do not enter
any text but simply hit return, the next paragraph is still in 'text body'
style but without the additional formatting supplied by the list button.  And
the button darkening to which you refer has gone.

For writing which will / or may be later transformed into another format such
as epub, it is better to avoid 'ad hoc' formatting and make a special style.

On 16/12/2022 21:18, Eric Beversluis wrote:

Here's a theory that a bit of testing seems to support:

What if, when one hits 'return,' the 'block outline' style has not been applied
because there's nothing on the new line.

If then, one hits 'return' again, Writer is not longer following up on any
particular style so it reverts to the default style.

Tending to confirm this: typing just a blank space before hitting the second
'return' retains the 'block outline' style.

The behavior of the toolbar 'ordered list' icon shows what's happening. When in
'block outline,' the icon for 'ordered list' is darkened. If I hit two
'returns' in a row, the 'no list' icon is darkened. Fn-F12 restores the
'ordered list' setting--the 'ordered list' icon is darkened again.

Re: [libreoffice-users] double-spacing within an outline

It's set to single space. But there are times I want to double space--e.g., to make a
greater break between "paragraphs" at a given outline level. But when I hit
enter/return twice I get kicked out of my custom outline style.

Is this a "feature" of LO Writer outlining or is there some setting that will keep me in
the current outline style when I add an extra line spacing? (The only thing that works now is to
single space, add some new text, and then go to the start of that "paragraph" and hit
enter/return again.)

Using Ubuntu 20.04 and LO 7.3.6.2 on Dell XPS.

Hi Eric, there are a couple of ways that I use to do that sort of thing when I
use bullet or alphanumeric lists that you can also use with what you call your
block outline style.

The first, for occasional use, is to use a soft return using Shift+Enter. This
just gives a new line without quitting the existing paragraph.

Second solution which is worth implementing if you do lots of that stuff, is to
create different styles. I have a 'list1' style for the first item in a list to
give additional headspace. 'ListCont' style for all the following list items
with close spacing. 'ListEnd' style for the last item to provide a little extra
space after the last entry and before the regular 'text body' style.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Header beginning on page 2?

2022-11-29 Thread Philip Jackson

The simple answer is to use 'styles' but it is not necessarily simple to
execute. If you have never used styles, it requires a little work up-front to
familiarize yourself.

Instead of using what is probably 'Default' page style throughout the document,
you will need to create a new style for the first page - which you could simple
call 'FirstPage'. In the definition of that page, you will turn headers and/or
footers 'Off'.

Then the rest of your document could stay with whatever is your default style
and with headers and/or footers turned 'On'.

Once you're into styles, you'll discover lots of page variants can be created
for special purposes within your documents.

Philip

looked but found no way to do headers beginning on page 2. Is there one?
If so, how might I invoke it?

(Ideally, there would be a check box, "begins on page 2," but I do
sometimes think that LibreOffice developers, given the choice of ease of
use and tremendous complication, pretty much always choose the latter.)

Thanks in advance.

If that is the case, try :

I had never before exported to pdf a part of a file but your email prompted me
to give it a go. I'm using LO 6.4.7.2 on UbuntuStudio. My first go was
completely successful and this is what I did.

The document has 211 pages with 10 pages front matter before the document's
page numbering starts. I wanted to export my Chapter 12 which starts on page
number 147 and ends on page number 153. LO Writer identifies these pages as
document page number 157 to 163 ( a count of 10 more than the pages' numbering
due to the front matter).

I selected File > Export as PDF and then in the General tab, under the heading 'Range',
deselected the  'All' button and selected the 'Pages' button. Then alongside the pages
button I entered "157-163" (without the quotes). And then clicked Export at bottom
right.

The result was a new document which just contained Chapter 12 of my original
document with the pages correctly numbered 147 to 153.

I think the OP was NOT referring to certificates required when installing

could not locate the OP's signing certificate when he wanted to sign a document.

Apart from seeing in Writer File > Digital Signatures, I don't have any

O.EXE $1

Strange thing is that absolutely nothing happens. No box
opens, and nothing in way of a error message is showing
up.. But with my simple macro - running it opens the
email client and has the document attached with no
problem...

Simple Macro
Sub Mailto
Dim oDoc As Object
Dim Path$
oDoc = ThisComponent
Path$ = oDoc.getURL()
If oDoc.HasLocation() Then
shell("/home/msetzerii/.wine/drive_c/PMAIL/Programs/W
SENDTO.EXE " (Path$,8,100) )
Else
Print "The document has not yet been stored"
End If
End Sub

Tools / Marco / Run and selecting it opens the email client
with the file attached..

Not getting anything is what confuses me. Would expect
something to show on screen, but nothing. The macro
calls same program and takes the passed parameter, and
does trim theFILE:// off the parameter.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Question on send to email option in linux..

2022-07-18 Thread Philip Jackson

Could there be a problem with your installation of LO?

I'm using LO Writer 6.4.7.2 on UbuntuStudio 20.04 and the Send to email works
fine. Clicking the File > 'Send to email' opens a write window in my
Thunderbird mail client with the document already attached.

might be better. First writer macro I've done. Usually do
macros in calc.
Found code getURL that gets path to file that must be
saved already. Probable a command to get it without the
file:// but found another thing to remove that.
Then it is just a matter of calling the WSENDTO.EXE
program and adding the full path to the already save file.
That brings up the Pegasus Email client, and adds the
document as an attachment.

Sub Mailto

shell("/home/msetzerii/.wine/drive_c/PMAIL/Programs/W

Else
Print "The document has not yet been stored"
End If
End Sub

Has print statements from original code, that could be
removed. The WSENDTO.EXE is the mapi client that
works in windows and works from firefox. Surprized that
nothing shows with libreoffice.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] design improvements needed on user interface

2022-05-09 Thread Philip Jackson

Using LO6.4.7.2 on UbuntuStudio 20.04 LTS (same in LO 7.3.2.2 in W10)

I'm preparing a contents list for a document where lots of clickable links are
required to sections within the document and this has reminded me of previous
poor experiences.

In the hyperlink dialogue box, your first selection has to be made in the left
hand column where I select 'document' (rather than Internet, mail, ...). The
next selection has to be the target within the document and to make the choice,
you have to move the mouse right across the dialogue box to click on another
icon at the extreme right hand side.

That's the first annoying bit. If you're only making one link, it's a very
minor effort but if you have loads to make, it becomes a chore which aggravates
a hand already damaged by years of computer use.

A click on that target icon opens another target dialogue where a selection has
to be made, in my case 'bookmarks' which opens a dropdown list requiring a
scroll down because I'm in the mid 20's of bookmarks at the moment. The
bookmark is selected and the 'apply' button is clicked and then the 'close'.

For the next link, all this has to be repeated.

It would be nice if a click on the 'document' selection in the hyperlink
dialogue box could directly open the target dialogue. If that is not possible,
then a second best would be to place the target icon over on the left hand side
of the hyperlink dialogue, right next to the 'document' selection.

It would also be good, too, if the target dialogue would remember your last
choice and reopen with 'bookmarks' already dropped down and even scrolled to
where you last left it.

Any thoughts?

Re: [libreoffice-users] corrupt files when using command line --print-to-file

2022-04-11 Thread Philip Jackson

Hi Mike,

I'm using LO 6.4.7.2 on UbuntuStudio 20.04 LTS and your --headless command line
instruction works and produces a pdf file which passed the pdfinfo check with
flying colours. I just rechecked to make sure.   So maybe your problem is
distro related?

But I don't use the --headless command very often because it breaks the links in my
pdf output. So, I make use of the LO Writer gui to do   file> export as>export
as pdf  which gets me a workable pdf with working links (clickable table of contents
etc). If I need to reassemble some pdf docs, I use pdftk utility because so many of
the others break those links.

I've revisited some code last used a few years ago, whose last step is just to
use LO to do this conversion. It used to make a .ps file, but that now seems to
have changed, and I get a .pdf instead - which is corrupt.

So I get for example

libreoffice --headless --print-to-file --outdir "./"  "./y.odt"

print /dhome/mike/homebrew software/service sheet production/web generator/y.odt ->
/dhome/mike/homebrew software/service sheet production/web generator//y.pdf using

pdfinfo y.pdf

Syntax Warning: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)
Syntax Error (2432): Illegal character '{'
Syntax Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Syntax Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Syntax Error: Couldn't read xref table

The resulting pdf won't load into a browser and upsets several of the pdf
tools, although gimp or xreader can read it. Fortunately, pdf2ps accepts the
file, so as a workaround, I do the LO --print-to-file and then run the result
through pdf2ps and then back through ps2pdf; the result of that contortion
seems OK.

Looking at the GUI instead, under the tools|options|print page, if I try to set
options for print to file, the tick box for pdf is set and disabled. Yet if I
select print to file in the normal print dialogue, I get a valid .ps file not a
pdf.

I need to run this as a print job, since '--convert-to pdf' doesn't honour the
brochure setting in place in the document. Using the GUI and printing works
fine, but isn't useful for automated processing.

If anyone has a way better of doing a command line conversion to a pdf while
honouring in particular the 'brochure' setting, I'd be grateful.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Cannot install a separator line above footnotes.

other selection must be made. Unfortunately for 'style' no other
options besides 'None' are available; so it is impossible to install a
separator line above footnotes. What do I need to do to have other
options for 'style'?

I am using LO 7.2.3.2 with Debian 11 'Bullseye' and the Trinity desktop
environment.

Although on my Ubuntu box using LO 6.4.7.2 I couldn't reproduce your problem,
today I had occasion to use my Windows 10 machine which has LO 7.1.2.2
installed directly from the Document Foundation site. On that version, there
are three methods to access the format footnote info and one of these produces
an empty dropdown list for the footnote style.

Accessing the footnote tab from Format > Page Style > footnote tab shows line
options in the dropdown for the footnote style. The same happens when I access the
page style tab via the styles panel (which appears on the rhs of the screen when I
use F11.

However, the page styles list includes a specific style entry for 'footnote'
which I certainly did not create. When I right clicked on this footnote style
and selected 'modify', it tool me to what looks like the normal page style
dialogue with a footnote tab. Selecting this tab produced a line style dropdown
set to 'none' with just a blank space beneath the 'none'. It looked just like
you described, ie no other options. But hovering the cursor over the blank
space within the dropdown shows that the three options - solid, dotted, dashed,
are in fact present but not displayed.

The reason they're not displayed seems to be that the defaults in this approach
to footnote modification have the line thickness set at 0 pt. As soon as this
was changed to another value, the 3 options became visible.

If I set the thickness to 0pt in my linux box, the same blank options dropdown
is displayed.  Is that the answer to your problem?

This ceased to be a problem today. Solved by another reboot? Probably was

[libreoffice-users] changing anchor of image drops me to end of document

2021-11-23 Thread Philip Jackson

Writer in LO 6.4.7.2 in Ubuntu 20.4

I am reformatting some documents to a larger print size. This involves changing
layout of pages and the requirement to perform some operations on images. For
each image, I need to turn off wrap, change the anchor point from paragraph to
character and then align middle to anchor.

I completed this reformatting task on Vol 1 with some 90 odd images with
absolutely no problem (other than wrist ache). Today I started on Vol 2, again
with around 90 images but right from the first image I got this strange effect.
I can turn the wrap off ok, but when I change the anchor from paragraph to
character, my display of the document zaps me down some 120 pages right to the
very end of the document.

The actual operation of changing the anchor point gets completed correctly and
I eventually found that the easy way to get back to my correct place in the
document was simply to hit the up arrow key. At first, it was an annoying
scroll back up to the right place until I found that a simple click of the up

I find it exports to pdf as advertised. If I select and define a range on one

dialogues are involved and they can conflict.

There is the defining of print ranges where if you have defined nothing and go to
format > print ranges > edit, you will see that by default the print range of
each sheet is defined as 'entire sheet' .  You can, if you think of it, change that
on each sheet to 'none'.

If you use export as pdf, the export dialogue again has a range selection
possibility : All, Pages, Selection/Selected sheet(s).

I doubt whether many people think of checking  "format > print ranges > edit"
if they have never set a range in the first place.

Thank you, Brian. That's exactly what it was.  Since I have never knowingly

turned itself on. Now, I know that is not a reasonable supposition so I have
investigated to try to understand what I did.

I was working automatically, almost on autopilot, using a series of keyboard

Enter ...  etc. I must have accidentally hit an unwanted key.

Searching in Tools | Customize | Keyboard for existing shortcuts revealed under
Category | Edit, a shortcut for Record Shift-Ctrl-C.  That is what I must have
hit once and only once because it acts as an on-off toggle and the second time
produces a dialogue box which gives the game away.

Thanks again, Brian. My knowledge has been increased and I'll know better next

[libreoffice-users] unwanted red lines on spreadsheet and info boxes

2021-10-04 Thread Philip Jackson

LO 6.4.7.2 in UbuntuStudio 20.04

Suddenly in the middle of a sheet of a newly created spreadsheet, it has
developed a rash of red lines. Some enclose a range of cells and some just
appear on the whole row.

If I hover over these red lines, a small yellow info box opens which informs me
that I, at date, time, deleted rows xx:yy.  Or if the line is a box enclosing a
range of cells, the note tells me that on date/time I moved Range A12:B12 to
C13:D13.

I don't know what I did to cause these lines to appear and what's worse. I
don't know how to make them vanish. I certainly didn't change anything in
Tools/Options. I have checked all menu columns and tried to find some reference
in the Manual but without success.

What I was doing when these lines appeared was pasting text data into a single
column over about 40 or 50 rows, deleting rows I didn't need and then selecting
two adjacent cells, cutting them out with Ctrl-X, selecting a new empty cell
higher in the column and then pasting the contents in with Paste Special
(Shift-Ctrl-V) using the transpose function to paste to two adjacent cells in
the same row. I have done this hundreds of times over a lengthy period with
many spreadsheets and this evening I had completed the operations some 20 to 25
times with no problem then suddenly it all went wrong.

I've tried copying the info over to a new sheet but red lines follow and,
worse,  everywhere I move the cursor on the new sheet, a little box attached to
the cursor provides info (unwanted).

No doubt I had some faulty manipulation somewhere but if anyone can tell me how
to get rid of this unwanted info, and what I did to provoke it, I'd be grateful.

makes no difference. You get always a shape and in Writer neither for the shape
itself nor for the text in the shape styles are possible. You can only use
direct formatting in Writer.

Your distinction between legacy callouts and custom shape callouts implies that
the basic idea has been around for some time, and special callout shapes were
added later. Do you recall when it started, and at what point someone was moved
to add custom shapes? In order to understand the issue (and any possible
deficiencies) further, I would like to:
 (1) see the earliest Writer Guide and Help in which callouts are mentioned;
 (2) try to understand why special shapes were of more interest than style
support;
 (3) try to understand the intended use of the "Callouts" toolbar, and why it
has not been made visible;
 (4) try to understand when and why Vertical Callouts were added to the Drawing
toolbar (but not made visible).

I've been intrigued by this thread. Callouts was something I'd never heard of
but I've now found them quite useful. As far as documentation is concerned, I
have an old file, GS42-GettingStartedLO.pdf, from 2014 in which a search for
'callouts' gets several hits on 3 pages.

The first says "For more information, see the Draw Guide Chapter 7 Getting Started
with Draw, or the Impress Guide Chapters 4, 5, and 6."   I don't have either of
these two.

The next says "Click on the triangle to the right of the Callouts icon to open the
Callouts toolbar for drawing".  So it would appear that the callouts toolbar is
nothing more than a dropdown from the callouts icon in the Drawing toolbar.

The 3rd page just shows that there are 2 callout icons on the Drawing toolbar.
In fact, in my copy of Writer (6.4.7.2 in UbuntuStudio 20.04.2) there are those
2 icons, one with a dropdown list of  7 icons (the toolbar?) and the other a
single icon which gives a simple rectangular callout shape.

This time, however, the link breaking doesn't work fully. To break the

(as did right-click on the image and then 'Replace'). Attempting to

I've done as you asked and included a demo file with 14 linked images of which

[libreoffice-users] Breaking of external links in Writer works poorly

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: Formatting cell with decimal point but no decimal digits

("#,##0.." also works, but that's too bizarre.;-)

On my version (6.1.5) both of these formats display the cell
contents with a trailing decimal point, but with this
formatting, inputting 123.45 results in cell content 12345.

This thread caught my eye and I can't imagine the use case for displaying the
digital point as the OP wishes - but I gave his model a try as I did also with
the two expressions proposed by Chuck. I am using Calc 6.4.7.2 in Ubuntu
20.04.2  The results were surprising.

I entered 123.59 in some cells in 3 columns formatted as: -

1) Numbers #,##0"."

2) Numbers #,##0\.

3) Numbers  #,##0..

All three columns then displayed my entries as "124."   ie, rounded up and with a final
"."

But, when I entered 123.59 into other empty cells in those 3 pre-formatted columns, my
new entries were displayed as "12,359." in each case.

So applying the format to an already entered number gives a final "." - I don't
know whether the rounding up is acceptable or not. But I imagine the OP wants to enter
his number into cells that already have his format applied.

Curiously, when I selected my 3 columns and attempted to return to 'normality' by
formatting the cells to Numbers > General, nothing happened. I had to change to
some other format than Number (eg date) and then back to numbers-general to get a
result.

When Numbers-General was eventually restored, the "124."  entries were returned to their original states of
"123.59" but those entries applied to the pre-formatted columns and which then displayed as
"12,359." became "12359" under the restored numbers-general regime.

Strange - I have LO 6.4.6.2 on UbuntuStudio and 7.0.2.2 on Windows10 and in

options on ruler units (mm, cm, inches, etc).

On both of my installations, there is a small tab emblem at the extreme left

Hi Philip,

Exactly the same issue here but not only in Calc but also in Writer, Impress
and Draw. No old documents needed to reproduce it. Just open any of these
modules, type in some characters so that you have at least two different fonts
and two different font sizes. Then point the cursor in the text to the
different fonts and font sizes and that's it.

I am currently using Xubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu Studio 20.04 and Ubuntu Budgie
20.04. I downloaded LO 6.3.6.2, LO 6.4.6.2 and LO 7.0.1.2 from libreoffice.org
and installed them in an external hard drive so that I can access these
installations from any distro. The issue only occurs when running these
installations of LO 6.3 or LO 6.4 from Ubuntu Studio; it does never happen with
LO 7.0 (regardless of the distro) and it also never happens when running any of
these same three installations of LO from Xubuntu or from Ubuntu Budgie.

Thanks for your confirmation, JPS. I can confirm that I get the effect in
Writer too. I hadn't noticed it before but you're quite right.  Interesting
that you get the poor display only in UbuntuStudio and even using downloads of
LO direct from libreoffice.org.

I made a fresh, clean installation of UbuntuStudio 20.04.1 at the beginning of
August and my experience with it so far is that it is the worst since I started
with this distro back in 14.04. I have some applications that take 32 seconds
to start up regardless of whether it is the first start or an n'th start since
bootup. I had xscreensaver which wouldn't kick in until I disabled the startup
script that came with the distro. Some applications do start normally but some
are always slow and some of these slow ones were part of the distribution and
not something I installed later.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact announced by UbuntuStudio that their
dev's were pretty well all working with Kubuntu and the KDE Plasma desktop.
20.04 was their last planned release with the XFCE desktop.

Anyway, it does not appear to be a subject for this discussion group and would
be more correctly dealt with on the Ubuntu forums.

Thanks and best regards,
Philip

It must have been a recent Windows update. I just discovered that the various
Amazon apps like Kindle Previewer, Kindle Create are now missing from the Start

Avid Sibelius notation software no longer appears in the Start Menu and nor do
Dragon Dictate and Scrivener. Looks like everything non-Microsoft has
disappeared from the Start Menu. I can find and launch them through the search

Well, I was always used to weird things happening with Windows and I have read

A small footnote : I have 2 accounts on W10, my user account and my admin

account has lost all the non-Microsoft stuff.

[libreoffice-users] Does LO normally appear in Windows 10 start menu?

2020-09-20 Thread Philip Jackson

In the course of investigating another thread, I went to make a couple of new
files in LO Writer on my W10 box. I was surprised to be unable to find
LibreOffice or any of its modules in the Start Menu.

I only keep W10 for use of a couple of applications that either don't work or
work poorly under linux so some weeks, W10 spends more time updating than
creating. It is maintained fully up to date.

Way back, I installed LibreOffice 6.3.5.2 but usually I start Writer or Calc from the
File Explorer right click drop-down's "start with ...".

I do have the feeling that originally LibreOffice did appear in the start menu
but perhaps my memory fails me. Or did a Windows 10 update remove the listing
from the Start Menu?

Any suggestions about how to get LO and its modules to appear (reappear) in the
start menu?

I work on Windows 10. What OS do you use? Perhaps there is an error in Linux?

I just tried in UbuntuStudio 20.04.1 with LO 6.4.5.2 and the procedure works
fine as Regina said.

But as Robert says, too, the path is indicated in the absolute form in the
Document Path field. Right clicking on the link and selecting Edit Hyperlink
also shows an absolute path. But inspection of content.xml confirms that the
path is relative.

If the file with the hyperlink is moved to a different directory, the link
updates showing again an absolute path as though the linked file has also been
moved. But, of course, the link no longer works because it was relative and all
the files concerned are no longer in the same directory.

I rechecked on a Windows10 box (up to date) with LO 6.3.5.2 and the behaviour
is exactly the same, showing an absolute path when really it is relative.

Indicating an absolute path in the linking dialogue is misleading.

I've tried the various regex in this thread and this last one (above) produces
an unusual result for me.

In the Find and Replace dialogue, if I press "Find Next" it finds the next occurence and highlights only the
contents inside the brackets as expected. But the odd behaviour comes when I press "Replace" - it does not
replace the contents but just finds the next occurrence.  In other words, the "Replace" button acts exactly
the same as the "Find Next" button.

If I select "Replace All", it does just that.  I usually avoid the 'replace
all' function because of the possibility of unexpected consequences, at least until after
I have used the 'Find Next' and 'Replace' sequence a few times.

For the other regex in this thread, the "Find Next" and "Replace" buttons
behave correctly.

I tried many times also using the alternative expression mentioned in the link
above,

||

Writer 6.4.5.2.

[libreoffice-users] embedded media in Writer files

2020-08-23 Thread Philip Jackson

Using UbuntuStudio 20.04.1 with LO 6.4.5.2

I hoped to enhance a training document with some media so I embedded a short
video clip, mp4, relevant to the text in Writer. This has caused me to run into
2 problems.

1. I cannot find a way to format the standard presentation to eliminate
unwanted parts of the 'video screen'. The short video clip (12 seconds) only
effectively occupies the top 40% of the video window presented in Writer. The
lower 60% just uselessly occupies a part of the page with a white background. I
would like the clip to be full page width for readability. Unlocking the
'ratio' and reducing the clip height just compresses the useful part and makes
it useless (as I would expect).

With still images, I would just run the image through an editor and cut out its
blank lower 'half'. I suppose, video is made to some fixed 'canvas' size 4:3 or
16:9 or whatever.  I'm afraid my video knowledge is pretty limited.

Does anyone know a solution for this, either inside LO or using external
editors?

2. Second problem concerns exporting the document from Writer to pdf. On the
face of it, the export goes well and the pdf opens nicely in a pdf reader.
Clicking on the video clip causes it play with a pause control popping up. Then
the trouble starts. It appears impossible to lose focus off the video clip and
the trouble manifests differently whether one has scrolling enabled or whether
one goes up and down page by page.

With scrolling enabled, the video clip display fills with random text from
neighboring paragraphs so a reader can no longer refer to the still display of
the first frame. When clicking up and down page by page, the video clip floats
to the new page(s). The only way out seems to be to close and reopen the pdf.
This is not a good solution.

I have tried the various settings offered by Writer for the export to pdf but
nothing seems to change this behavior.

Any ideas or pointers to useful resources would be welcome, thanks?

I had looked at the .fodt file in a plain text editor and did find where the

p37 interface in the body, I couldn't spot anything of help to explain my
trouble.

What did impress me though was the terrible amount of stuff stored in the LO
Writer file that is not relevant to the actual document. I was reminded of a
problem I had when I upgraded the LO suite a few years' back. At that time,
Writer seemed to think I was working in Spanish language when I have never used
Spanish and had specifically selected the UK English version to download.

In the xml stuff of my problem file, near the top were two lines defining the
language as Spanish. This must surely be a relic of some LO developer's work
still hanging around in template definitions.

There were also several page definitions of 8.5" x 11" (US Letter size) and
none of the page styles I used in that document were of that size.

A single sentence written in a single font style appears with three sets of
tags referring to 3 different text styles. When looking up to see what
is the difference in these text style definitions, the only difference is in the
officeooo:rsid number, whatever that is. The context makes me guess that it refers to
different flavours of the English language.

I was hoping to pass on the file for others to look at but it has now been
messed around with so much that it would be a waste of everybody's time. Thanks
to all those who offered to help.

[libreoffice-users] defective field in header on one page

2020-08-01 Thread Philip Jackson

I'm carrying out a minor rework on a book I wrote in Writer some 3 years' ago.
The problem which is stumping me is that the field which displays the chapter
name in the header of the right hand pages is missing on page 37.

All other headers and footers are displaying their fields correctly. I have
applied the field shading (View > Field Shadings) and I can see the shading.
But it has shrunk down to the size of a single space on this page.  A right click
on this space gives the option to edit fields so Writer is convinced that the
field is there and produces the dialogue box with the field name, Chapter Name,
which is correct.

Anything I do to reapply this field or edit the field in page 37 appears in all
the other right hand page headers as well.

I can't see anything in the style spec of p37 that differs from any of the
other right hand pages. I've tried deleting this page and reinserting but the
problem gets inherited by the new page.

Does anyone know what I'm missing here?

Interesting.

Unfortunately, by the time I found the corruption in the pdf file, I could no

a graphic I had been applying manually to the base of each page.

My doc was only of 15 pages, not > 97, so after I found I could not get rid of

If deleting a page "only made the corruption appear on the next" page; that suggest
corruption linked with header or footer. Did you try changing Page style (Insert > More Breaks

The page style I was using had both header and footer OFF ( at least, not
selected ON). But I did just try your idea of changing the page style just
before the corrupted page. The new page inherited the corruption but only as
long as it stayed in that place in the document. If I moved the new page down

the corruption is in a fixed spot in the document.

Were the elements not at all visible in Navigator? Did you try examining in an
XML editor? (First save the file in FODT (Flat ODT) format or unzip the ODT
file to examine content.xml.)

Nothing visible in the Navigator.

Yes, following your suggestion, I've had a look in an xml text editor both flat
ODT and content.xml and I can't see the corruption. I'm not saying it isn't
there but life moves on and this cannot absorb more time.

Why not use Writer for the first page?

Because I wanted to use an image with title text using a web font which I don't
have locally. So I prepared the title page at an online site.

In anticipation , I edited the page no. field to have an offset of 1 so that my
page numbering in Writer would start at 2.

That is the wrong tool for your purpose. Go to the very first paragraph of the page. Open the properties of that
paragraph. Go to tab "Text flow". Enable Breaks "Insert". Enable "With page style".
Enable "Page number". Enter 2.

The tool "Offset" has a totally different use case. It is used in letter for
the information in the footer, that this page of the letter has a following page. And for
this use case it is the correct behavior, that it is empty for the last page of the letter

Thank you for the info on 'Offset'.  I reset it back to 0 so that removes that
part of the problem.

Then I tried to follow what you suggested but the result was strange because I thought
that the tab "Text Flow"  was arrived at by editing the paragraph style which
is in this case an H1 heading.  Of course that numbered every page which started with an
H1 heading to 2. So I had lots of page 2's in the doc. :-)   :-)

I had never realised after years of working with Writer, that an individual
paragraph could have its properties modified by arriving at the 'Text Flow' tab
through the sidebar Properties > paragraph section.  Once I realised that that
was what you meant, it all turned out well and the whole document now starts at
page 2 and numbers correctly to the end.

Thanks and best regards,
Philip

Tests show that this works nicely with one exception. The last page doesn't

If the offset is set to 0 (the default), the last page displays a number as

Is there some other manipulation I can make in LO Writer to make the page no.
show on the last page as soon as it is generated within Writer when the offset

into the new with frequent checks to make sure the corruption didn't get copied
over.

Has anyone come across this sort of effect? Is there a way to get such a
graphic element to be visible in Writer?

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to include a graphic element as part of a page definition in LO Writer?

Using Writer 6.3.5.2

I drew a colour filled polygon at the top of a page where the header would
normally be. I saved this as a template and then went to use it for a new
document.

The new document had the graphic on the first page but not on subsequent pages.
Clearly, the graphic element did not form part of the page description and I
cannot find a way to make it stick so all new pages with that template
automatically include the graphic.

Does anyone have suggestions for how this could be achieved in Writer other
than by the hard labour method of copy and pasting the element to each  new
page?

You need to enable the header and then anchor the graphic to the paragraph in
the header. It is not necessary that this paragraph has any content

Thank you for the reply. I could not succeed to get the existing graphic to
anchor inside the header and after lots of attempts, I gave up. I remade the
graphic inside the header and even that had its problems. If I slipped slightly
outside the header space, the graphic would reanchor to the body paragraph.

I eventually got there and did the footer too so all is working nicely.
